You can use Apple’s Photos app to extend a photo’s edges for an iPhone wallpaper in iOS 27—but not on every iPhone. Apple’s built-in Extend tool requires an Apple Intelligence-compatible model, including iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later, and availability also depends on language and region. If your iPhone is eligible, open Photos > Edit > Tools > Extend to start.
What does the iPhone wallpaper Extend tool do?
Extend expands the area around an existing photo so it can fit a wallpaper frame without relying only on a crop or zoom. Apple describes the feature as extending a photo beyond its original frame. The added edges are generated; the tool is not simply showing more of the original image.

This is useful when a portrait or landscape photo does not have the right proportions for the Lock Screen. You can reposition and enlarge the image, then ask Extend to fill the extra space around it. The result is an edited image that you can save and set as wallpaper.
Which iPhones can use Extend in iOS 27?
Apple’s stated Apple Intelligence support includes iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models or later. The feature is not available on every iPhone just because it runs iOS 27: Apple Intelligence availability also depends on supported language and region, and some server-assisted features may have usage limits.

Apple’s support scope is the relevant check for this feature. If your model is outside the listed compatible devices, updating iOS alone will not make the native Apple Intelligence Extend tool available.
How do I extend a photo so it fits my iPhone wallpaper?
Use Photos to expand the image first, save the edit, and then choose that image in wallpaper settings.

- Open the photo: In Photos, select the image you want to use.
- Open the editing tools: Tap Edit, then tap Tools and choose Extend.
- Adjust the framing: Pinch or drag the photo to enlarge the background. Drag the frame edge to adjust the crop.
- Generate the extension: Tap Extend and let the tool create the expanded image.
- Save the result: Tap Done, then tap Done again.
- Set it as wallpaper: Open Settings > Wallpaper > Add New Wallpaper > Photos, select the edited image, and tap Add.
- Choose the display arrangement: Select Set as Wallpaper Pair or Customize Home Screen.
You can also open the wallpaper gallery by touching and holding the Lock Screen, then continue adding a wallpaper from there.
How can I make the Lock Screen fill without cutting off the subject?
Position the subject before generating the extension. In the Extend tool, adjust the photo’s size and placement so the person or object stays within the visible frame; the generated area can then fill the space around it. Check the preview before saving, because the wallpaper crop and the full photo are not necessarily the same framing.

If the subject is too close to an edge, try a different position or scale before tapping Extend. The tool expands the image’s surroundings, but it does not change the wallpaper frame itself.
Why don’t I see Extend in Photos?
The most important checks are device compatibility and Apple Intelligence availability. If the option is missing, confirm your iPhone is among Apple’s supported models and that the relevant language and regional availability conditions are met.

- Check the model: Native Extend is part of Apple Intelligence, not a universal Photos editing option for all iPhones.
- Check availability: Apple Intelligence features depend on supported languages and regions; availability can also vary for server-assisted features.
- Check the location in Photos: Open a photo, tap Edit, then look under Tools for Extend.
If your iPhone is not eligible, the built-in Apple workflow described here is unavailable. Older iPhones can still use ordinary photo editing and wallpaper-setting features, but that is different from Apple Intelligence’s generative Extend tool.

On supported devices, Image Playground can create an original image from a text description, a style, or a source photo. Apple presents it as another way to make images for uses such as Lock Screen wallpapers. Choose it when you want a newly created wallpaper rather than expanded edges on a particular photograph.

For an older iPhone, the established option in this guide is to use ordinary photo editing and set the edited image as wallpaper; no particular third-party generative editor is identified here as a verified alternative.
What is the difference between Extend and Image Playground?

Both are Apple Intelligence capabilities, so neither should be assumed to work on every iPhone. Extend is the more direct choice when preserving the central content of a particular photo matters; Image Playground is for making a new image.

Does Extend recover parts of the scene that were outside the original photo?
No. Extend creates new image content around the existing photo; it does not reveal or restore details the camera never captured.
Can I create a wallpaper if I don’t want to use one of my photos?
Yes. Image Playground can generate an image from a text description or style, so you do not have to begin with a finished photograph.
Does a wallpaper made with Extend keep the original photo’s exact proportions?
Not necessarily. The framing can be adjusted for the wallpaper, and the saved extended image may have a different composition from the untouched original.
