Invoice financing lets a business use eligible, unpaid business-to-business invoices to access working capital before customers pay. A provider commonly advances 80–90% of an invoice’s value, then releases the remaining reserve—less fees—after payment. The cost depends on the facility, how much you draw and how long customers take to pay; it is not simply the headline service fee. The fee ranges below are illustrative UK guidance, not quotes or figures that apply worldwide.

What is invoice financing, and how does it work?

Invoice finance bridges the cash-flow gap between delivering goods or services to a business customer and receiving payment. Instead of waiting for an invoice’s due date, a business assigns or presents eligible invoices under a commercial facility and receives an advance against them. The British Business Bank describes this as a way to bridge the working-capital gap between providing goods and services to business customers and being paid.

The advance is only part of the invoice value. Providers commonly advance up to 80–90%, retaining the balance as a reserve. Once the customer pays, the provider releases the reserve after deducting the applicable charges. That retained 10–20% is not itself a fee: UK Finance explains that it is generally released after payment. The business therefore needs to distinguish cash temporarily held back from the actual cost of financing.

What happens to an invoice under the facility?

  1. The business issues an invoice to an eligible B2B customer on agreed credit terms.
  2. The provider assesses the invoice and, if it meets the facility’s rules, makes an advance against it.
  3. The customer pays either the provider or the business, depending on the facility and collection arrangement.
  4. The provider accounts for the payment, deducts fees and charges, and releases any remaining reserve according to the agreement.

Invoice finance is not a grant or an automatic sale of every receivable without obligations. The reserve depends on customer payment, and the contract determines who bears the loss if payment fails. A business can also owe money back to the provider under recourse terms.

How much does invoice financing cost in the UK?

Two charges usually account for most of the cost: a service or administration fee, and a discounting charge that works much like interest on the amount drawn. The following ranges are indicative UK guidance, not a guaranteed price, APR, or offer for a particular business.

Charge Indicative UK range How to interpret it
Discount or interest charge Typically 2.5–3.5% over base rate, according to ACCA’s current guidance Applied to drawn funds; the cost generally rises with the time customers take to pay. Ask which base rate applies and whether the margin or rate can change.
Service charge Typically 0.5–3% of sales, according to ACCA’s current guidance Usually pays for the facility’s administration or service; the agreement defines the calculation and eligible sales.
Discount charge in Northern Ireland guidance 1.5–3% over base rate A regional indicative range; confirm the provider’s charging basis and terms.
Factoring credit-management fee in Northern Ireland guidance 0.75–2.5% of turnover Relates to the credit-management service associated with factoring.
Invoice-discounting fee in Northern Ireland guidance 0.2–0.5% of turnover Indicative fee range for invoice discounting in that guidance.
Non-recourse credit protection in Northern Ireland guidance 0.5–2% of turnover An additional indicative charge for protection; exclusions and coverage limits still matter.

These percentages have different bases—sales, turnover, or drawn funds—so they cannot be added together or compared as if they were all one annual rate. ACCA’s ranges are described as current guidance, but a specific date is not stated; the Northern Ireland figures are regional guidance. Neither is a quote. Ask a provider to show exactly what amount each fee applies to and when it is charged.

Why can the final cost exceed the headline fee?

Discount charges accrue on drawn funds, so slower customer payments can make the facility more expensive even when the service-fee percentage does not change. A quote should also identify any arrangement, renewal, minimum-volume, ledger, credit-protection and termination charges. Ask whether the rate floats with the provider’s base rate, and whether fees apply when invoices are disputed, paid early or become ineligible.

As a practical comparison, ask each provider to model the same expected invoice cash flows at 30-, 60- and 90-day payment speeds. The purpose is to see how utilization time affects both the cash you receive and the charges—not to assume every customer will pay on schedule. Compare total charges and reserve timing, not just the initial advance or service fee.

What is the difference between factoring and invoice discounting?

The central difference is who handles the sales ledger and customer collections. Factoring typically includes provider-led ledger management and collections, while invoice discounting generally leaves collection with the business and may be confidential.

Feature Factoring Invoice discounting
Collections Provider manages the ledger and collects from customers Business retains collection responsibility
Customer visibility Usually disclosed to customers Often confidential, subject to the facility and provider
Service fee Usually higher because administration is included Usually lower
Typical fit Smaller firms seeking credit-control support Established firms able to run their own credit control
Main operational concern Customer relationships and exposure under recourse terms Internal collection workload and repayment if debtors default

Those are general distinctions, not guarantees about every contract. Confirm precisely who contacts customers, what the provider may say or do, and whether the arrangement is disclosed. A service labelled confidential should still be checked for circumstances in which disclosure or direct collection may occur.

What is selective or spot invoice finance?

Selective or spot finance lets a business seek funding against chosen invoices rather than putting an ongoing pool or ledger through a broader facility. It can suit occasional cash needs or a smaller business that does not fit a traditional facility. The trade-off is that the provider still decides which invoices qualify, and the cost and conditions depend on that product’s contract.

Who is eligible for invoice finance?

Providers generally look for a business selling to other businesses on credit, a trackable trading record, reliable accounts and invoices that can be verified. They also assess the credit quality and payment behavior of the customers who owe the money.

  • B2B credit sales: Customers should be businesses buying on credit terms, rather than primarily consumers paying at the point of sale.
  • Trading history and accounts: Providers commonly request evidence of operations and recent accounts.
  • Usable sales ledger: The ledger should clearly show invoice age, payment history and customer concentration.
  • Acceptable debtors: A provider evaluates the customers’ credit quality and payment behavior, not only the applicant business.
  • Suitable invoice terms: Invoices are normally payable within 30–90 days, though the provider sets its own limits.

The British Business Bank says traditional facilities may not suit businesses below about £300,000 in annual turnover. This is not a universal minimum: thresholds are provider-specific, and selective or spot products may fit smaller or occasional needs. Do not treat turnover alone as an approval test; debtor quality, invoice eligibility, concentration and contract terms also matter.

Which invoices may be excluded?

Eligibility rules vary, but providers may reduce advances or reject invoices associated with weak or highly concentrated debtors, disputed work, consumer sales, intercompany transactions or long payment terms. Before relying on a projected advance, ask for the agreement’s definitions of an eligible invoice, a concentration limit, a dispute and an overdue debt. A large invoice is not useful funding if it fails those conditions.

What risks should an MSME check before signing?

The main risks are not limited to the quoted percentage. Recourse, customer treatment, invoice eligibility, security and contract exit terms can affect both the business’s cash position and its relationship with customers.

Recourse and non-recourse protection

Under a recourse arrangement, the business remains liable if a customer fails to pay. Non-recourse protection may cover specified credit losses but costs extra and has exclusions; it should not be read as a promise that every unpaid invoice is covered. Confirm which events qualify, any waiting periods or caps, and what happens when non-payment results from a dispute rather than customer insolvency.

Customer contact and reputation

With factoring, the provider typically contacts customers and manages collections. Agree the collection script, escalation path and process for handling a payment query before signing. If customer relationships are sensitive, establish exactly what customers will be told and when the provider may contact them.

Concentration, disputes and changing advances

A facility may depend on a diverse, collectible ledger. If one customer represents a large share of invoices, or a customer disputes work, the provider may reduce the amount available or exclude those invoices. Model the facility using invoices that are likely to remain eligible, rather than assuming all sales turn into advances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Security, exclusivity and credit checks

Assigning invoices to one facility can prevent using those same invoices elsewhere. Review the all-in security package, invoice-exclusivity clauses and termination provisions, including what must happen to outstanding balances when the facility ends. Applications can involve credit checks that may affect the business credit report, so ask what checks are performed and on whom.

How should you compare providers and quotes?

A disciplined comparison makes providers price the same business problem. Prepare a year of invoice and payment data, then compare the cash available, total charges and obligations under realistic customer-payment scenarios.

  1. Build a 12-month schedule. Record invoice amounts, issue and due dates, payment dates where known, and how long customers typically take to pay.
  2. Separate likely eligible invoices. Flag disputed, consumer, intercompany, long-term and concentrated-debtor invoices so they are not mistaken for dependable funding.
  3. Request at least three comparable quotes. Ask each provider to state the advance rate, service fee, discount margin, reserve release rules, recourse, bad-debt protection and every ancillary charge.
  4. Model 30-, 60- and 90-day payment speeds. Compare total cash received and total cost under each scenario, including the effect of drawn balances remaining outstanding longer.
  5. Review the contract mechanics. Check customer notification, data sharing, covenants, termination, security and invoice-exclusivity terms before committing.
  6. Reassess when the business changes. Recheck the facility if turnover, debtor concentration or customer payment behavior shifts materially.

When comparing quotes, normalize the fee bases. A service charge on sales, a fee on turnover and a discount margin on drawn funds answer different questions. Request an example using your own likely invoice pattern and have the provider identify assumptions, exclusions and any fees not included in its headline number.

Why does invoice finance matter in the UK—and what do the figures show?

UK Department for Business and Trade figures published in 2025 show both the cash-flow context and the fact that invoice finance is not used by every small employer. Six percent of SME employers reported using alternative finance, a category that includes factoring and invoice discounting. Separately, 44% said they gave customers trade credit; among those trade-credit-giving employers, 63% considered late payment a problem, equal to 28% of all SME employers.

These are UK survey results about SME employers, not global MSME rates or a forecast for an individual business. They help explain why a business might explore invoice finance, but they do not show that it will be affordable, suitable or available to a particular applicant.

When does invoice financing make sense?

It can be worth exploring when a business has collectible B2B invoices, a timing gap between delivery and payment, and a clear use for the released working capital. It is less compelling if the cost of waiting for payment is lower than the facility’s full charges, if most invoices are ineligible, or if customer collection and contract restrictions create unacceptable operational risk.

Assess the facility against alternatives available to the business, but compare like with like: the cash amount, timing, total cost, security, flexibility and repayment exposure. Invoice finance turns receivables into earlier liquidity; it does not fix persistently unprofitable sales, slow customer practices or a weak collection process by itself.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is invoice finance the same as a business loan?

Not exactly. It is a commercial facility linked to receivables, and the amount available and charges depend on invoices, utilization and customer payment; the contract determines repayment responsibility if the customer does not pay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can a start-up use invoice financing without a long trading history?

Possibly, but providers commonly ask for a trading history and recent accounts, so a new business may have fewer suitable options. Ask whether the provider will consider the specific debtors and invoices rather than assuming an invoice alone guarantees approval.

Can I finance just one customer’s invoice?

Some selective or spot products allow a business to seek funding against chosen invoices. The provider’s eligibility, pricing and customer-contact rules still apply, and an invoice from a concentrated debtor may not qualify on the terms expected.

Does non-recourse invoice finance mean I never repay an unpaid invoice?

No. Non-recourse protection is limited by the events, exclusions and caps in the agreement, and it may not cover disputes or other reasons a customer withholds payment. Read the defined protection trigger and confirm in writing which losses are covered.
