Microsoft Intune error 80180006 (also displayed as 0x80180006) identifies an internal Mobile Device Management (MDM) server fault. Microsoft maps it to MENROLL_E_DEVICE_INTERNALSERVICE_ERROR and the SOAP subcode InternalServiceFault: an unhandled exception occurred on the MDM server. The code tells you the kind of failure, but not its specific cause in your organization’s tenant or that your PC is broken. Preserve the error details and contact your IT administrator; administrators should review the enrollment evidence and configuration before changing settings.
What does Intune error 80180006 mean?
It means an unexpected server-side problem occurred during an MDM enrollment request. Microsoft’s Windows device-enrollment reference describes the error as an unhandled exception on the MDM server and advises retrying or contacting the administrator. The protocol specification’s classification also points to an unexpected server issue. Microsoft’s exact description is: “There was an unhandled exception on the Mobile Device Management (MDM) server.”

That is a useful starting point, but not a diagnosis of the underlying fault. The same code does not establish whether a tenant setting, enrollment flow, account, or temporary server-side condition caused the particular request to fail. Nor does it mean the device is already enrolled or unsupported. Avoid treating the code as proof of a damaged computer or a confirmed Microsoft service outage.
People have reported seeing the message while using Company Portal, adding a work or school account, or signing in with a work account. One Microsoft Q&A report uses the wording “Server message: Unknown error code 0x80180006,” and a separate Windows 11 question describes device management failing to enable. These reports show where the code can appear; they do not establish one shared cause or a current incident. See the Microsoft Q&A report.

What should I check before changing anything?
First identify the route that produced the error. Company Portal enrollment, adding a work or school account, Entra join or registration, and Group Policy automatic enrollment are different paths. A setting or diagnostic that applies to one may not apply to another. Do not assume that every report is an Autopilot deployment or that a Group Policy repair applies to a user who simply opened Company Portal.
- Record the Windows version and whether the device is personal or corporate-owned.
- Note the exact screen text, the time of the failure, the affected account, and the app or Windows flow in use.
- Keep any server trace ID, correlation information, or other diagnostic details shown with the error. These can help the tenant administrator or Microsoft support investigate the declined request.
- Write down whether the goal is an app sign-in only, a work-account connection, or full device management.
- Do not make broad registry, firewall, or device-reset changes before the administrator has reviewed the failure record.
These details help distinguish an enrollment request that reached the service and failed from one where the expected enrollment task never started. They also prevent an administrator from troubleshooting the wrong enrollment technology.

How do I find the Windows enrollment failure record?
On the affected PC, check the DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostic-Provider Admin log. For automatic enrollment, event 76 indicates failure and event 75 indicates success, according to Microsoft’s MDM enrollment diagnostic guidance.
- Open Event Viewer.
- Go to Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > DeviceManagement-Enterprise-Diagnostic-Provider > Admin.
- Find entries around the time of the failed attempt and note the event details and exact error text.
- If this is Group Policy automatic enrollment, ask the administrator to check whether the EnterpriseMgmt scheduled task was triggered. If the expected enrollment events are absent, the task may not have run.
Do not treat Task Scheduler event 102 by itself as proof of successful enrollment: Microsoft notes that it can occur regardless of the enrollment outcome. The enrollment result should be established from the relevant enrollment evidence, not from a task-completion event alone. If event 76 is present, provide its full details rather than only the six-digit code. If neither event 75 nor 76 appears, that absence is itself useful: investigate the task trigger, policy delivery, join state, or the enrollment route instead of assuming the server rejected a completed request.

Which account and tenant settings should the administrator verify?
Microsoft’s enrollment troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the enrolling user’s authorization and the tenant’s enrollment setup. These checks can identify a configuration problem, but the 80180006 code alone does not show which, if any, applies.
- Intune license: Confirm that the user attempting enrollment has an applicable Intune license.
- Automatic enrollment: If the organization expects automatic enrollment, verify that it is enabled for the user and that the user falls within the intended scope.
- Windows support: Check that the Windows version is supported for the selected enrollment method.
- MDM discovery URL: Verify that the configured discovery URL is the expected one for the organization.
- Windows enrollment permissions: Confirm that the tenant allows the relevant Windows enrollment route.
- Policy and join state: Confirm that the device’s identity and policy assignment match the enrollment method being attempted.
An organization setting up automatic enrollment needs a Microsoft Intune subscription and the applicable Microsoft Entra licensing prerequisite. Licensing is a prerequisite for an intended setup, not evidence that buying another license will cure an already-licensed tenant’s server fault. The administrator should verify the assignment and entitlement first, rather than sending a user to purchase software.

For Group Policy automatic enrollment specifically, the administrator should also verify hybrid join and policy deployment. On the PC, dsregcmd /status can show whether AzureAdJoined and DomainJoined are both YES, along with the primary refresh token indication. These are conditional checks for that Group Policy route—not a checklist every Company Portal user needs to run.
Could MDM and WIP or MAM scopes conflict?
They are worth checking in a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) case, but scope overlap is a documented behavior to investigate, not a proven universal cause of 80180006. Microsoft’s current Intune navigation for Windows automatic enrollment is Intune admin center > Devices > Device onboarding > Enrollment > Windows > Automatic Enrollment.

| Setting or device context | Documented behavior | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| MDM scope: None | Disables automatic enrollment. | Check whether this matches the organization’s intended enrollment route. It does not mean users can never initiate enrollment. |
| MDM scope: Some | Targets selected users. | Confirm the enrolling user is included where automatic enrollment is expected. |
| MDM scope: All | Targets all users. | Confirm that broad targeting is intentional before changing it. |
| User in both MAM/WIP and MDM scopes | For a personal device, WIP takes precedence; for a corporate-owned device, MDM takes precedence. | Check the device’s ownership classification and the user’s scope membership. |
Microsoft advises setting the WIP scope to None for its setup flow, or keeping WIP and MDM membership nonoverlapping when WIP is used. A Microsoft Q&A participant reported resolving one case by setting the MAM scope to None, and Microsoft external staff suggested checking WIP and MDM scopes in another case. Those are case-specific reports, not a guarantee that changing scope will fix another tenant’s error.
Because changing a tenant-wide scope can affect other people and devices, the administrator should first review the intended management policy and scope membership. Do not change All or None broadly just to see whether the code disappears. A scope change that permits an app to sign in may still leave the device unmanaged, which is a different result from successful enrollment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do the troubleshooting paths differ?
| Situation | Prioritize | Do not assume |
|---|---|---|
| Personal BYOD device | Ownership classification and WIP/MAM versus MDM scope precedence. | That corporate-device MDM behavior applies unchanged. |
| Company Portal or account-addition flow | The exact screen, account, license, enrollment permission, and Windows log evidence. | That Group Policy or hybrid-join checks are required. |
| Group Policy automatic enrollment | Hybrid join, policy deployment, EnterpriseMgmt task trigger, and events 75 or 76. | That event 102 proves enrollment succeeded. |
| Sign-in-only objective | Whether unmanaged app access is acceptable to the organization. | That successful sign-in equals managed-device enrollment. |
This comparison keeps a server-fault classification from turning into a one-size-fits-all repair list. The correct next check depends on the route, ownership, and outcome the organization requires.
What changes should I avoid as a default fix?
Do not apply repairs meant for a different enrollment error simply because the messages look similar. Microsoft’s separate guidance for already-enrolled devices and registry changes relates to other error scenarios, including 8018000a or a machine-already-enrolled message—not a general 80180006 fix.

- Do not delete entries wholesale from
HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftEnrollmentsas a routine response. - Do not disable the firewall, reset Windows, or replace the computer without evidence pointing to those actions.
- Do not bypass device management if the organization requires the device to be managed. An app sign-in may succeed without completing the enrollment the organization needs.
- Do not assume that an option to continue without management solves the enrollment failure; it may only allow an app sign-in flow to proceed.
- Do not buy a replacement laptop, router, network adapter, USB repair tool, or printed manual for this code. The documented diagnosis relies on built-in Windows logs and tenant configuration, and no hardware failure is established.
If the initial attempt fails, Microsoft’s published guidance allows retrying or contacting the administrator. A retry can be reasonable, particularly after a transient service condition, but repeated attempts without preserving the details or checking the relevant enrollment path are unlikely to reveal the tenant-specific cause. The administrator can use the failure time, event details, and any trace information to investigate.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should users and administrators divide the troubleshooting?
The user can preserve the original error and establish which enrollment flow was in progress. Tenant administrators are best placed to verify licensing, scopes, discovery settings, permissions, and the organization’s intended enrollment policy. If the available event or trace information does not explain the failure, the administrator can provide it to Microsoft support.
- Personal device: Include that it is BYOD when reporting the error, because the documented MDM-versus-WIP precedence differs by ownership.
- Company Portal or account-addition flow: Identify the exact app or Windows screen; do not substitute Group Policy checks unless that is the actual method in use.
- Group Policy automatic enrollment: Include the relevant join and policy status, and verify that the enrollment task was triggered.
- Sign-in only versus managed-device requirement: Make clear whether the goal is simply to access an app or to complete device enrollment. Those outcomes are not interchangeable.
- Escalation: Send the timestamp, account, device ownership, route, event details, and trace or correlation identifier through the organization’s support channel rather than posting identifying values publicly.
The key distinction is between a server-fault classification and a root-cause finding. The code supplies the former; the account, enrollment path, event record, and tenant configuration help the administrator establish the latter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a successful work-account sign-in mean Windows enrolled in Intune?
Not necessarily. A work app may allow sign-in without completing managed-device enrollment, so confirm the device’s management status with your organization if enrollment is required.

Does error 80180006 confirm that Microsoft Intune is experiencing an outage?
No. The code describes an internal MDM server fault for the failed request, but it does not establish a wider service incident. The cited user reports are individual cases, not confirmation of an outage.
What does the server trace ID do?
If the error screen includes a trace or correlation identifier, it can help the tenant administrator or Microsoft support investigate the specific request. Keep it with the error time and affected account rather than posting it publicly.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Should I change the MAM or WIP scope to None?
Only an administrator should make that conditional change after checking the intended policy, device ownership, and scope membership. A reported case improved when MAM was set to None, but that does not make it a universal fix, and broad changes can affect other users.
Is 80180006 the same as an already-enrolled-device error?
No. Microsoft documents separate remedies for already-enrolled scenarios such as 8018000a or a machine-already-enrolled message. Do not reuse registry-deletion instructions for 80180006 without evidence that the other condition exists.
Do I need to buy a new computer or repair utility?
No hardware or third-party repair purchase is established by this code. Start with the Windows enrollment log and tenant checks. An Intune subscription and applicable Microsoft Entra licensing are setup prerequisites for an organization, not proof that a new purchase will fix an existing server fault.
The Bottom Line
80180006/0x80180006 identifies an internal Intune MDM-server exception, not a broken PC. Record the enrollment route, ownership, timestamp, account, full message, event details, and any trace ID. Then have the administrator verify licensing, enrollment permissions, discovery settings, join and policy state where applicable, and MDM/WIP scope behavior. Avoid unrelated registry, firewall, reset, hardware, or bypass fixes until those facts identify a specific cause.
