Install The Uncensored Library according to the Minecraft edition and file you have: the project’s documented download is a ZIP for Java Edition, which you extract into the Java saves folder. Bedrock Edition uses a separate import process and needs a Bedrock-compatible world file; the Java ZIP is not automatically a Bedrock map. The steps below explain both routes and what to check if the world does not appear.
At a glance: which installation route should I use?
| Edition | World file | Where it goes | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|
| Java Edition | The project’s documented download is a ZIP archive; extract it to get the world folder. | Place the complete world folder in the active Java profile’s saves directory. |
Windows, macOS, and Linux |
| Bedrock Edition | A Bedrock-compatible world file is required. Bedrock worlds are commonly distributed as .mcworld files, but that convention does not establish that an official Uncensored Library Bedrock download is available. |
In Minecraft, select Play → Import world, then choose the compatible world file. |
Windows and other Bedrock platforms; exact import options vary by platform. |
Use the edition and file type stated by the map provider. The official Uncensored Library installation guide documents a Java ZIP workflow, not a verified Bedrock conversion. If you are on a Windows PC, check whether you are opening Java or Bedrock before following steps: both editions are sold together for PC, but they use different world and multiplayer systems.

What is The Uncensored Library?
The Uncensored Library is a Minecraft world created as a Reporters Without Borders project, with creative and production collaborators including BlockWorks, DDB Germany, and MediaMonks. It presents reporting and information about press freedom inside a navigable library, and the project has also been offered through a multiplayer server.
Reporters Without Borders announced the library’s opening on March 12, 2020, World Day Against Cyber Censorship. Its announcement said visitors could find the RSF World Press Freedom Index and reports about press freedom in 180 countries. The project is designed as a place to explore and read, rather than a conventional Minecraft adventure map with a campaign to complete.

The map is separate from the Minecraft game: the project materials describe the map download as free, while players still need access to Minecraft. Mojang lists Java and Bedrock together for PC, but they remain distinct editions with different world files and multiplayer systems. You do not need to buy a separate copy of The Uncensored Library; the game itself is the product you need to own or access.
How do I install The Uncensored Library on Java Edition?
Download the project’s map ZIP, extract it, and put the resulting complete world folder in the saves directory used by the Java profile you want to play. The project’s official guide describes this PC/Mac workflow; Windows has the clearest published folder instructions.
Before you start
- Make sure you are launching Minecraft: Java Edition, not Bedrock Edition.
- Download the archive from the project’s official download page and extract it with your operating system’s archive utility or another ZIP extractor.
- If you use a custom launcher or more than one Java installation, identify the game directory for the specific profile you will launch. A map placed in a different profile’s saves folder will not appear in the one you open.
- Leave the downloaded ZIP intact until you have confirmed that the extracted world opens. If something goes wrong, you can extract it again without downloading the archive a second time.
Windows
- Download the map archive from the project’s official download page.
- Extract the ZIP. Do not copy the ZIP itself into the saves folder.
- Press
Win+R, enter%appdata%, and press Enter. Open.minecraft, then opensaves. This is the path in the project’s official guide for a standard Windows setup. - Copy the complete extracted world folder into
saves. The folder should contain the world data, including a file such aslevel.dat; it should not just contain another ZIP or a second folder that holds the actual world. - Start Minecraft Java Edition, choose
Singleplayer, and find the imported world in the list.
The folder you copy is the world, not the archive that delivered it. In practical terms, when you open the folder placed in saves, you should find the world files inside it. If instead you see only another folder and the world files are inside that inner folder, move the inner folder into saves. That one-level nesting mistake is a common reason an otherwise valid map does not appear.
macOS
- Download and extract the project’s map ZIP.
- Open the Java saves folder, commonly
~/Library/Application Support/minecraft/saves. - Copy the complete extracted world folder into
saves. - Launch Java Edition and check the
Singleplayerworld list.
The official project guide identifies PC and Mac support but gives its clearest path for Windows. If Minecraft uses a custom game directory on your Mac, use that installation’s actual saves folder rather than assuming the default path.
Linux and custom launchers
The official installation guide does not provide a Linux-specific or custom-launcher path. Find the game directory for the launcher and profile you actually use, then place the extracted world folder in that directory’s saves folder. Launcher profiles can use separate game directories, so the default location for a standard installation may not be the active one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Java Edition is available on Windows, Mac, and Linux, but the correct folder depends on the launcher and profile. If you are unsure which game directory a profile uses, open that profile’s settings in its launcher and use its configured game directory; do not assume that a Windows location applies to macOS or Linux.
How do I install The Uncensored Library on Bedrock?
Bedrock imports a Bedrock-compatible world file through its Worlds screen. Minecraft Help documents the Windows Bedrock sequence as Play → Import world → choose the file; it does not make a Java world ZIP compatible with Bedrock.

- Copy or download the Bedrock world file onto the PC.
- Launch Minecraft: Bedrock Edition and select

Import world. - Locate the world file, select it, and choose
Import. - When the import finishes, open the world from the single-player Worlds list.
Bedrock maps are commonly distributed as .mcworld files, which may also be opened through the operating system on some setups. That is a general Bedrock convention, not confirmation that the project’s official Uncensored Library download includes such a package. If the project’s download is only a Java ZIP, this documented Bedrock import route cannot use it as-is.
These specific import steps are for Windows Bedrock. Bedrock is also available on consoles and mobile devices, but file transfer and import options differ by platform; a Windows Import world instruction should not be assumed to apply identically everywhere. Before downloading an alternate copy, check that the provider explicitly identifies it as compatible with your platform and Bedrock version.

Should I choose Java or Bedrock?
Choose the edition that matches the world file and the people or server you plan to play with. Both editions are available for PC, but a world file and multiplayer session for one edition do not automatically work in the other.
| Difference | Java Edition | Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| World installation | For the documented map ZIP workflow, extract the archive and put the world folder in saves. |
Use a Bedrock-compatible package and import it through the Worlds screen. |
| Multiplayer | Java players join Java-hosted games. | Bedrock players need Bedrock-hosted games. |
| Platform availability | Windows, Mac, and Linux. | Windows and many console and mobile platforms. |
| Version selection | Java can select historical release versions in the launcher. | Bedrock generally uses the current stable release or a preview channel. |
Mojang’s edition guidance is the safest basis for choosing: if you are downloading the documented Java ZIP, use Java Edition. On Windows, having Minecraft does not by itself identify which edition is open; check the edition named by the launcher or game before troubleshooting the map.
If your goal is simply to explore a local world, start with the edition named on the download page. If you want to join friends, ask which edition and server they use first: Java players and Bedrock players need compatible hosted games. Owning both PC editions does not convert a world between them or make a Java server available to Bedrock players.
Can I join The Uncensored Library server instead?
The project announcement and its historical installation PDF describe an open server at visit.uncensoredlibrary.com. The PDF instructs players to use Minecraft 1.14.4 and connect through Java Edition’s Multiplayer → Direct Connect screen, but those instructions are historical and do not establish that the server address or version is still supported.

In other words, you may be able to visit without downloading a local copy if the public server is currently available and accepts your edition and version. That is different from installing the world on your own device: a public server route depends on the project maintaining access, while a local map route depends on obtaining a compatible world file. Do not use the old address or Minecraft 1.14.4 instruction as proof that the server is online today.
Why is the map not showing up or loading?
Most missing-world problems come down to using the wrong edition, putting the files in the wrong game directory, or copying an archive instead of the world folder. Check the relevant edition’s file and location before trying conversions or third-party downloads.
- Java does not show the world: Confirm the ZIP was extracted, then check that the complete world folder—not the ZIP—is directly inside the active profile’s
savesdirectory. If the extracted folder contains another folder and the actual world data is inside that inner folder, move the inner world folder intosaves. Look for world data such aslevel.dat. - Bedrock does not show the world: Confirm the file is a Bedrock-compatible world package, then use
Play→Import world. A Java save folder or ZIP is not a substitute for a Bedrock world file. - The server refuses the connection: Verify the current project instructions, edition, server address, and supported version. The historical guide’s Minecraft 1.14.4 instruction may not match current server requirements.
- The world loads poorly or appears to stall: Use a compatible stable game version, close other resource-intensive applications, and keep a backup before experimenting with conversions or files from other sources. Without information about the computer, installation, and game version, there is no single confirmed performance fix.
- A third-party site offers a copy: Prefer the project’s official download path. A listing on a third-party host is not, by itself, an authoritative statement from the project about ownership, compatibility, or current support.
Work through the checks in order instead of repeatedly moving files between folders. First confirm the edition; then confirm the file type; then confirm the destination folder or import method. If the world still does not appear, close the game, check the active profile or launcher directory again, and reopen Minecraft. Keep the original download and a backup of any world you experiment with.
How do I verify the game version and edition?
Keep the map installation and any server connection separate: the world folder can be installed locally, while server access depends on the server’s current edition and version requirements. The project’s old guide names version 1.14.4 for its server route; it should not be treated as a requirement for every local copy of the map today.
For Java, the launcher allows historical release versions to be selected, but use the version specified by current project instructions when connecting to a server. For Bedrock, Mojang says players generally use the current stable release or preview channel. If a map fails after changing versions, restore the version you were using and test with a backed-up copy rather than risking the only copy of a world.
Do not downgrade or change versions just because the old server PDF names 1.14.4. That number belongs to the PDF’s historical multiplayer instructions, not a blanket statement about what every current local installation must run. For a server, follow the project’s current connection information; for a downloaded world, follow the edition and version notes supplied with that world.
How was The Uncensored Library intended to be accessed?
The project’s materials describe two routes: download and explore the Minecraft world locally, or visit through its multiplayer server when that server is available. The local route is the more direct option when you have the supported world file; server access is contingent on live project instructions and a compatible edition and version.

The library was announced on March 12, 2020, by Reporters Without Borders. Its announcement highlighted the World Press Freedom Index and coverage of press-freedom conditions in 180 countries. Editor in chief of grani.ru Yulia Berezovskaia summarized the project’s aim: “The only real way of fighting censorship is sharing and spreading what has been censored.”
The map itself is described as a free project download. Players need Minecraft to open it, and the edition must match the installation method. Avoid assuming that an old server listing or a third-party Bedrock package is an official current alternative to the Java download.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should I choose a download source?
Start with the Uncensored Library project’s official download page, because its installation guide is the project’s own documentation for the Java archive. If an alternate host has a copy, treat that as third-party distribution rather than confirmation from the project about current format support.
- Check that the page identifies the map and the intended Minecraft edition.
- Check the file type before installing: the documented Java route is a ZIP that must be extracted; Bedrock requires its own compatible world file.
- Do not use an unfamiliar conversion or renamed file as proof of official Bedrock support. Keep a backup before trying a third-party world or conversion.
A current listing on CurseForge is a third-party-hosted listing, not the same thing as an official project compatibility statement. Prefer the project’s own download instructions when available, and do not assume that any alternate copy is maintained, converted, or endorsed by Reporters Without Borders. The map installation does not require a separate utility or paid map service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I install The Uncensored Library map on Minecraft Java?
Download the project’s ZIP, extract it, and copy the complete world folder into the saves directory used by your Java profile. On a standard Windows setup, open %appdata%, then .minecraft and saves. Start Java Edition and select the world from Singleplayer.
Where do I put The Uncensored Library ZIP file?
Do not put the ZIP itself in the Java saves folder. Extract it first, then place the complete world folder—the folder containing world data such as level.dat—inside the active profile’s saves directory.
How do I install The Uncensored Library on Bedrock?
You need a Bedrock-compatible world file. On Windows Bedrock, open Play, choose Import world on the Worlds tab, select the file, and import it. The project’s documented ZIP workflow is for Java; a Java ZIP is not automatically usable in Bedrock.

Is there an official Bedrock version of The Uncensored Library?
The project’s documented installation guide describes a Java ZIP workflow. It does not verify an official Bedrock conversion. Do not treat a third-party Bedrock package or a renamed Java ZIP as official compatibility confirmation.
Can I play The Uncensored Library on Windows 10 or Windows 11?
Yes, if you have the Minecraft edition and world file that match. Mojang sells Java and Bedrock together for PC, but they are separate editions. The documented Uncensored Library ZIP workflow is for Java Edition; Bedrock needs a Bedrock-compatible package and its import process.
Do I need Java or Bedrock for The Uncensored Library?
For the project’s documented map ZIP, use Java Edition. Bedrock can only use a Bedrock-compatible world file. Check the edition named by the provider and by your Minecraft launcher before installing.
Can I join The Uncensored Library server without downloading the map?
The project announced a public server route, and an older installation PDF lists visit.uncensoredlibrary.com and Minecraft 1.14.4. Those details are historical, not a guarantee of current availability. Check the project’s current site; a server also requires a matching edition and compatible version.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIs The Uncensored Library map free?
The project materials describe the map download as free. You still need access to Minecraft to open it; no separate purchase of the library map is documented.
Why isn’t the Minecraft map showing up?
For Java, make sure the ZIP is extracted and the complete world folder is directly inside the active profile’s saves folder. For Bedrock, confirm you have a Bedrock-compatible file and used Play → Import world. A Java ZIP or save folder will not work through Bedrock’s import flow.
When did The Uncensored Library open?
Reporters Without Borders announced its opening on March 12, 2020, World Day Against Cyber Censorship. The organization said the library included its World Press Freedom Index and reports on press-freedom conditions in 180 countries.
What can visitors read inside The Uncensored Library?
The project announcement describes reporting about press freedom and the RSF World Press Freedom Index, alongside reports about 180 countries. The 180-country figure is from Reporters Without Borders’ 2020 announcement.
Why was The Uncensored Library built in Minecraft?
The project uses a navigable Minecraft library to make censored reporting accessible in a shared digital space. As editor in chief of grani.ru, Yulia Berezovskaia put its rationale this way: “The only real way of fighting censorship is sharing and spreading what has been censored.”
The Bottom Line
For the documented Uncensored Library download, use Java Edition: extract the project ZIP and place the complete world folder in the active profile’s saves folder. Bedrock needs its own compatible world package and import flow; the Java ZIP is not a substitute. The map is described as free, but Minecraft is still required, and the old server instructions should be checked against the project’s current site before you connect.
