Microsoft Edit is easiest to install on Windows 11: type edit first, then run winget install Microsoft.Edit if the command is missing. On macOS, install the Homebrew package with brew install msedit. On Linux, use Microsoft’s installer script after installing Rust, a C compiler, ICU, and the required archive tools. Edit is a modeless, command-line text editor, so you can edit without switching between Vim-style modes while still getting multiple files, search and replace, word wrap, and mouse support.

This guide covers the supported installation paths, first-launch workflow, command names, prerequisites, troubleshooting, and how Edit compares with Vim, nano, and micro.

What is Microsoft Edit, and why use it instead of Vim or nano?

Microsoft describes Edit as “a lightweight, open-source command-line text editor for Windows 11.” It is written in Rust and uses a modeless text-user interface: typing inserts text immediately, while menus and shortcut keys provide commands. You do not have to learn Vim’s separate normal, insert, and command-line modes before making a basic edit.

Edit is aimed at quick terminal work rather than replacing every capability of a full programming environment. Its documented feature set includes opening several files, finding and replacing text, word wrapping, mouse navigation, selection, and scrolling. Microsoft’s launch announcement described the early editor as less than 250 kB, giving it a small footprint in the Windows image.

The practical choice depends on your workflow:

  • Choose Edit when you want a familiar, menu-driven terminal editor without modal commands, especially on current Windows 11.
  • Choose Vim when modal editing, extensive keyboard commands, scripting, and a deep power-user ecosystem matter more than a short learning curve.
  • Choose nano when you want a very direct shortcut-driven editor that is commonly present on Unix-like systems.
  • Choose micro when you want an approachable shortcut-driven editor with documented cross-platform distribution as a single static binary.

Edit is open source and has documented installation routes for Windows, macOS, and Linux. The Windows experience is the most integrated because newer Windows 11 releases include the command.

Which Windows versions include Edit?

The current Microsoft documentation says Edit is included in the September 2025 optional update or a newer update, and in the Windows 11 2025 Update, version 25H2. Availability can therefore depend on your installed Windows 11 build rather than on whether the operating system is generally “Windows 11.”

Open Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal and check before installing anything:

edit

If a blank editor opens, Edit is already available. If the shell reports that edit is not recognized, install it with WinGet.

How do I install Microsoft Edit on Windows?

  1. Open a terminal. Start Command Prompt, PowerShell, or Windows Terminal.
  2. Check for the built-in command. Run edit. This confirms whether your Windows 11 update already supplies the editor.
  3. Install the package if needed. Run winget install Microsoft.Edit.
  4. Confirm the launch. Run edit again. A blank editing window should open.
  5. Open a file directly. Use edit your-file-name, replacing your-file-name with a path such as edit notes.txt.

WinGet is the normal fallback when your Windows 11 installation predates the included package or the optional update is not installed. Microsoft also publishes releases through its official GitHub repository; that route is useful when you need a release package rather than the Windows package manager.

What if WinGet cannot find Microsoft.Edit?

First check that you are using a current Windows 11 installation and that WinGet itself is available. If Edit is absent from your system image and the package command fails, use the latest release from Microsoft’s official repository instead. After installing a release package, start the editor with edit when that executable is provided.

How do I install Microsoft Edit on macOS?

On macOS, the documented package name is msedit and Homebrew is the package manager. Install Homebrew first if it is not already present, then install Edit from a terminal.

  1. Ensure Homebrew is installed. Use your normal Homebrew installation process and verify that the brew command works.
  2. Install Edit. Run brew install msedit.
  3. Launch the editor. The repository documents msedit as the Homebrew package and alternate executable name. Where the canonical executable is available, you can use edit; otherwise start it with msedit.
  4. Open a file. Pass a filename after the command, for example msedit notes.txt or edit notes.txt when that alias exists.

The package name and executable name are not identical on every platform, so trying msedit is the reliable macOS starting point after Homebrew installation.

How do I install Microsoft Edit on Linux?

The official Linux instructions use an installation script that builds or installs the editor with a Rust toolchain. Before running it, have Rust installed through rustup or another supported method, a C compiler such as GCC, an ICU library, and curl or wget together with tar.

Install to your user account

The default script places msedit in ~/.local/bin:

curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://raw.githubusercontent.com/microsoft/edit/main/assets/install.sh | sh

If your shell does not already search that directory, add ~/.local/bin to your PATH. Start the editor with msedit or with the available edit alias, then pass a file path to open an existing file.

Install system-wide

For a system-wide installation, the repository documents this form:

curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://raw.githubusercontent.com/microsoft/edit/main/assets/install.sh | sh -s -- --dev --system

The --dev --system arguments select the system installation mode documented by the project. Because this changes a shared system location, use the permissions and account policy appropriate for your distribution.

Build from source instead

The repository also documents building with Cargo. This is useful when you already maintain Rust projects or need to control the build locally, but it requires the same general compiler and library prerequisites. The script is the shorter path when your system meets the listed requirements.

How do I open files and use Edit after installation?

Run edit with no argument for a blank document, or append a filename to open that file:

edit file.txt

On systems where the alternate executable is used, substitute msedit:

msedit file.txt

Edit is modeless. You can begin typing without first pressing an “insert” command, and menu keybindings remain available while you work. This is the central difference from Vim’s modal interaction model.

How do I switch between files?

Press Ctrl+P to open and switch among multiple files. This lets you keep several documents in one editor session instead of starting a separate terminal process for each file.

How do I find and replace text?

Press Ctrl+F, or choose Edit > Find. The matching options include:

How do I turn word wrap on or off?

Press Alt+Z to toggle word wrap. Wrapping changes how long lines are displayed; it does not require you to insert line breaks into the file.

Can I use a mouse?

Yes. Edit supports mouse navigation, selection, and scrolling in the terminal interface. That makes routine selection and movement easier for people who prefer pointer input, while keyboard shortcuts remain available.

What should I check when Edit will not start?

Most launch failures come from using the wrong command name, an older Windows build, or a missing Linux path or prerequisite. Check the branch that matches your operating system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Windows troubleshooting

  • edit is not recognized: run winget install Microsoft.Edit, then start a new terminal and try edit again.
  • The built-in command is missing: verify that Windows 11 has the September 2025 optional update or a newer update, or Windows 11 version 25H2. If your build is older, use the WinGet or official release route.
  • A file will not open: provide the complete path or change to the directory containing the file before running edit filename.

macOS troubleshooting

  • brew is not found: Homebrew is not installed or its shell setup is incomplete; resolve that first.
  • edit is not found after installation: use the documented alternate executable, msedit.
  • The package command fails: check that Homebrew itself can reach and install packages, then rerun brew install msedit.

Linux troubleshooting

  • The installer stops on a missing compiler or library: install Rust, a C compiler such as GCC, ICU, and the required curl or wget plus tar tools.
  • msedit is installed but the shell cannot find it: add ~/.local/bin to PATH for the user installation, then start a new shell or reload your shell configuration.
  • The command name differs: try msedit first; use edit only when your installation provides that alias.
  • You need a shared installation: rerun the documented script with --dev --system and follow your distribution’s permission policy.

How does Edit compare with Vim, nano, and micro?

Edit’s strongest distinction is its interaction model. Installation effort and portability also vary significantly by operating system, so the best alternative depends on both your editing habits and your host platform.

Editor Interaction model Installation and portability Documented features or positioning
Microsoft Edit Modeless, menu-keybinding workflow Included in newer Windows 11 releases; WinGet on Windows; Homebrew on macOS; official script or Cargo build on Linux Multiple files, find and replace, regular-expression matching options, word wrap, mouse navigation, selection, and scrolling
Vim Modal editing Commonly treated as a Unix-like terminal option; the supplied comparison does not specify a single installation route Deeper modal power-user option
nano Direct shortcut-driven editing The supplied comparison does not specify a cross-platform package path Approachable terminal editing
micro Direct shortcut-driven editing Cross-platform distribution as a single static binary Approachable terminal editing with broad platform coverage

Is Edit easier than Vim?

For a first-time terminal editor user, usually yes: Edit does not require learning Vim’s modes before typing, and its menus expose common commands. Vim remains the better fit when you deliberately want modal commands and a deeper power-user workflow. “Easier” therefore describes the initial interaction, not a claim that Edit has every advanced capability Vim offers.

Is Edit easier than nano?

Edit and nano both avoid Vim’s modal workflow, so either can be approachable for routine changes. Edit adds documented mouse support, multiple-file switching with Ctrl+P, and configurable find options including regular expressions. Nano may still be the more familiar choice on a machine where it is already installed and your task is a very small terminal edit.

When is micro a better fit?

Micro is worth considering when you need the same approachable shortcut-driven style across several operating systems and prefer a single static binary distribution. Edit has documented paths for Windows, macOS, and Linux, but its Windows integration and built-in availability are its clearest advantages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What are Edit’s practical limitations?

Edit is positioned as a lightweight command-line editor, not as a complete integrated development environment. The documented material establishes its core editing, navigation, search, wrapping, and multi-file functions, but it does not publish benchmark results, user-satisfaction measurements, or a current release version number. Avoid choosing it on the assumption of a particular performance score or version-specific feature that is not documented.

Linux installation also has a higher setup burden than Windows installation: you may need Rust, a compiler, ICU, archive tools, and a PATH adjustment. On macOS, Homebrew is an additional prerequisite. Those requirements do not make Edit unusable, but they change the time required before the first launch.

Which installation method should I choose?

  • Windows 11 with a current update: run edit first; use WinGet only if the command is absent.
  • Windows 11 without the included package: run winget install Microsoft.Edit, or obtain the latest official release package.
  • macOS: install Homebrew if necessary, then run brew install msedit and launch with msedit when edit is not available.
  • Linux: choose the user installation script for a local setup, the --dev --system form for a system-wide setup, or Cargo if you already manage Rust builds.

Once installed, the essential workflow is the same: start the executable, open a file by passing its path, use Ctrl+P for additional files, Ctrl+F for search and replacement, and Alt+Z for word wrap. That combination gives Edit a low-friction alternative to Vim’s modal model while retaining the convenience of a terminal-based editor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Microsoft Edit supported on Windows 10?

The current documentation describes Edit as a Windows 11 editor and specifies Windows 11 update channels for its inclusion. The supplied installation information does not establish a supported Windows 10 path, so do not assume that the Windows 11 package or built-in command applies there.

What license is Microsoft Edit released under?

The project is open source under the MIT license. That license is stated for the project itself, while the installation commands above use Microsoft’s documented distribution channels.

How large is Microsoft Edit?

Microsoft’s 2025 launch announcement reported that the early editor was less than 250 kB. That figure describes the early Windows image footprint and should not be treated as a current package-size guarantee for every platform.
