Minecraft can preserve censored journalism by carrying it as readable in-game books inside a world that can be explored, downloaded and copied. The clearest example is The Uncensored Library, a project launched by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) with the Minecraft design collective BlockWorks and other creative partners. It offers a distribution route for reporting that may be blocked on ordinary websites, and a portable format that can outlast one server or domain. It is not immune to censorship: readers still need access to Minecraft and a working route to the server or map.
What is Minecraft’s Uncensored Library?
The Uncensored Library is a virtual library inside Minecraft that makes censored or suppressed journalism available as in-game reading. RSF launched it on March 12, 2020, World Day Against Cyber Censorship. The project is a real press-freedom initiative, not simply a fictional library or an ordinary fan-made world.

Its format combines an archive with a place to explore. Visitors move through a designed library and open books containing articles. Minecraft’s 2023 feature described approximately 300 books spread across twelve wings. BlockWorks describes the wider experience as covering information about all 180 countries in the press-freedom index, alongside exhibition halls focused on countries associated with press censorship. Those descriptions refer to the project at the time each source published them; neither should be treated as an always-current inventory.
The library’s design gives the material a physical-feeling context: country rooms, monuments, signs and exhibits surround the books. That is different from opening a list of article links. The setting can help visitors discover material by exploring, while the books remain the core information being preserved.

How does Minecraft preserve censored journalism?
The preservation method is a sequence: identify reporting that is censored or difficult to reach, place its text in Minecraft books, then distribute the world through a server and a downloadable map. The result is a portable digital container for the writing, not a guarantee that every reader can reach it.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Select reporting that has been suppressed
RSF and participating journalists identify journalism that has been blocked, censored, banned or made difficult to access in its country of origin. The project is therefore not just a general collection of news: its purpose is to make reporting available when the usual routes to it are constrained.
2. Turn the writing into in-game books
The text is presented in Minecraft books rather than as ordinary webpages. RSF says visitors can read the books and that their content cannot be changed on the server. That distinction matters: the project puts reporting into the game’s world, but the available evidence does not establish that every copy or every version of the map has identical controls.
3. Place books inside an explorable world
The neoclassical library and its rooms provide a navigable environment around the writing. The setting makes the archive a shared place to visit, not merely a file to retrieve. It also means that access is mediated by the game: the reader must be able to load and navigate the world, rather than simply opening a web page in a browser.
4. Distribute it through a live server and a map
At launch, RSF described two access routes: an open Minecraft server and a downloadable map that could be used offline or on another server. A live server makes it possible for visitors to enter the same public space, while a map file can be hosted or shared elsewhere. The Peabody Awards profile specifically notes that the map can be republished to other servers, reducing reliance on any single access point.

5. Let copies reduce dependence on one host
A server or website is a particular access point; a downloaded world can be copied and redistributed. That makes replication a form of resilience: if one domain or server becomes unavailable, another copy may still be hosted. Replication does not itself ensure that the file reaches a reader, remains unaltered, or continues to work with future Minecraft versions. It lowers dependence on one host; it does not abolish technical or political barriers.
Why use Minecraft instead of another archive?
RSF’s rationale was reach: Minecraft could offer a route to information in places where news websites, newspapers, blogs and independent media were blocked or controlled. Christian Mihr, managing director of Reporters Without Borders Germany, explained the choice this way: “By using Minecraft, the world’s most popular computer game, as a medium, we give them access to independent information.”
The scale figures cited for the project and the game should be read with their dates and sources attached. RSF’s 2020 annual report cited more than 145 million monthly active Minecraft players as a historical indication of the platform’s reach; that is not a current 2026 player count. The Peabody Awards profile describes the project as reaching more than 20 million gamers in 165 countries. These figures illustrate the audience the project sought, but they do not show that every player could reach the library or read every item.
Minecraft also provides an environment that can be copied and republished as a map. A conventional website may be easier to search and update, but the project’s rationale is that ordinary web access can be more directly exposed to blocking. A printed book can be read offline, but printing and moving physical copies across borders is a different distribution challenge. None of these formats is universally superior; each has different dependencies and strengths.
| Format | Reach and access | Replicability | Editorial and update considerations | Reader experience |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Live Minecraft server | Useful to readers who can reach Minecraft and the server; it supports shared exploration. | Depends on the server for this access route. | RSF says books on the server cannot be changed by visitors; ongoing availability depends on the host. | An explorable library visited in-game. |
| Downloadable Minecraft map | Requires the map file and a compatible Minecraft environment; RSF offered it for offline or other-server use. | Can be hosted or republished on another server. | A copied map can persist beyond one host, but the evidence does not establish identical content controls across all copies. | The same kind of navigable world, loaded from a local or separately hosted copy. |
| Conventional website | Easy to search and access with a browser where the site is reachable; websites may be blocked. | Can be mirrored, though the available data does not establish a specific mirror system for this project. | Often easier to update than a map; exposed to ordinary web filtering and control. | Direct reading and search rather than a game environment. |
| Printed book | Can be read without internet or a game, once physically available. | Can be reprinted, but physical distribution is required. | Updating requires a new edition or printing; moving copies across borders can be difficult. | Offline reading without interactive exploration. |
The table describes trade-offs, not a ranking. A Minecraft map’s particular advantage is combining an immersive setting with a replicable world file; its cost is dependence on the game, compatible software and a route to the file or server.

Which countries and journalists have appeared in the library?
The project’s contents have changed over time, so country coverage needs a date. RSF’s launch material identified journalism from Egypt, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. Later RSF updates described additions involving Belarus, Brazil, Eritrea and Iran. In a 2023 update, RSF said the library then served nine countries and noted new material about Iran and Russian media.
An RSF update around World Day Against Cyber Censorship in March 2026 announced a new United States room and listed material or rooms associated with Egypt, Belarus, Brazil, Eritrea, Iran, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia and Vietnam. It also noted new material in several existing rooms. This is a dated snapshot, not a promise that every room, article or map version will remain unchanged.
Examples connected with the project include work or memorial context involving Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, Mexican journalist Javier Valdez, and Vietnamese activist and blogger Nguyen Van Dai. Their names point to the human stakes behind an archive of censored writing: the material is not only about restrictions on media, but also about the journalists and writers affected by them.

The map can preserve a copy of writing in a format that is not just a standard news webpage. It can also reduce dependence on one server if people download and republish it. Those are meaningful properties of a digital archive, but they are not the same as censorship-proof access or permanent preservation.
- Network access still matters. A reader needs an internet connection to reach a live server or obtain a map copy. Local network restrictions can affect either route.
- Minecraft must be available. If the game or its platform is blocked, unavailable or inaccessible to a reader, the library may not be usable even when another copy exists.
- Software compatibility can change. The official sources confirm the server and downloadable-map models, but they do not establish a version or edition that will remain compatible indefinitely. Check the project’s current access instructions before attempting to join or load a copy.
- Servers and downloads are access points, not guarantees. A live server can stop operating, and a download can become difficult to find. Replication helps only when copies are actually available and hosted.
- A map is not a substitute for independent journalism. It preserves and distributes selected material; it does not provide the continuous reporting, editorial process or full range of sources that a functioning independent press can offer.
These limits also explain why the project should be understood as both distribution and preservation. The archive can make material available in a less conventional channel and give it a copyable form. Whether a person can use that channel depends on the surrounding internet, game and hosting conditions.

How should readers interpret the project’s reach figures?
Reported figures describe different things and come from different sources; they should not be added together or treated as a single current audience count. For example, the early launch figures concern website visits and map downloads, while the player and project reach figures describe broader platform or campaign reach.
- Platform audience: RSF’s 2020 annual report cited more than 145 million monthly active Minecraft players as context for the game’s reach at that time. It is historical, not a 2026 count.
- Project reach: The Peabody Awards profile describes more than 20 million gamers in 165 countries reached by the project. The figure is presented by that profile as project reach, not as a present-day count of active readers.
- Library scale: Minecraft’s 2023 description reported approximately 300 books across twelve wings. This is a dated description of the library’s scale.
- Build scale: Fast Company reported in 2021 that the build used more than 12.5 million virtual blocks.
- Early launch response: A Communication Arts creator interview reported more than 100,000 website visitors in the first three days and more than 10,000 map downloads. Those are early campaign figures, not current traffic or download totals.
Keeping the source and date beside each number avoids a common mistake: turning an early snapshot into a claim about how many people can access the library now.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where can readers access the library now?
RSF’s launch account and Minecraft’s official feature confirm the two broad routes: visit a live server or use a downloadable map. The supplied official descriptions establish those access models but do not establish a server address, download link, supported edition or compatible version that can be promised as current in November 2026.
Before trying to enter, consult the project’s own current access instructions and check the stated Minecraft edition and version. If a live server is unavailable, look for an official map download and its stated compatibility details; a downloadable world may be hosted locally or on another server, but it still requires an environment that can open it. Do not assume a copy found elsewhere is official or identical to RSF’s maintained version.
The project’s underlying principle is redistribution. Yulia Berezovskaia, editor in chief of grani.ru, put it this way: “The only real way of fighting censorship is sharing and spreading what has been censored.” In this case, sharing means preserving text inside a world that can travel beyond one web address, while recognizing that each new copy still needs a path to its reader.
