AI video-generation models turn prompts, images, or existing clips into moving pictures by learning patterns from large video datasets. Most current systems first compress video into a smaller latent representation, divide that representation into tokens covering space and time, and use a neural network to generate a coherent token sequence. Diffusion models begin with noisy latent video and repeatedly denoise it under text or visual guidance; a decoder then converts the result into frames, sometimes followed by super-resolution. Autoregressive and hybrid systems use different prediction strategies. The key challenge is not making one plausible frame, but preserving identity, geometry, interactions, camera movement, timing, and scene continuity across many frames.
What happens inside an AI video-generation model?
The process is a pipeline rather than a single magic step. Data preparation teaches the model what words, objects, actions, and cinematography look like; compression makes video computationally manageable; tokenization gives a transformer a sequence it can process; conditioning connects your instruction to that sequence; generation creates a latent movie; and decoding turns it into viewable frames.

- Collect and describe visual data. Developers train on videos paired with captions, plus still images and, in some projects, proprietary, partnered, custom, or human-curated material. Better descriptions help a model associate language with fine-grained actions, camera shots, subjects, and environments. OpenAI has described a descriptive recaptioning process intended to improve prompt fidelity.
- Compress the video. A video-compression encoder reduces spatial and temporal dimensions, producing a latent representation that is much smaller than the original RGB pixel grid. The generator works in this latent space, and a decoder later reconstructs frames.
- Make space-time tokens. The latent is divided into patches that represent regions over short time spans. Sora’s published approach calls these spacetime patches and treats an image as a one-frame video, allowing one representation to cover varied durations, resolutions, and aspect ratios.
- Inject the request. A text encoder converts the prompt into numerical embeddings. Attention layers let visual tokens consult those embeddings. Image-to-video and video-to-video systems also feed an image or source clip into the conditioning path.
- Generate a sequence. A diffusion denoiser or an autoregressive dynamics model predicts the latent movie. The network must model relationships between neighboring regions and distant frames, not just individual pictures.
- Decode and enhance. The final latent sequence is converted back to frames. Some systems then apply spatial or temporal super-resolution models to increase detail, frame size, or smoothness.
How does text-to-video turn a sentence into moving images?
Text-to-video combines language understanding with a learned visual-temporal prior. Your sentence is encoded into vectors, those vectors guide generation, and the model searches for a latent sequence whose content and motion are statistically compatible with the instruction.
1. The prompt becomes conditioning data
A text encoder breaks the prompt into tokens and maps them to embeddings. Cross-attention or related mechanisms allow the video network to use those embeddings while it predicts visual tokens. Words such as “slowly,” “toward the camera,” “wide shot,” or “red jacket” influence motion, framing, and attributes only to the extent that the training data taught the model those associations.

2. The model builds more than a storyboard
The generator predicts a joint space-time representation, so the subject, background, and camera can evolve together. It is not normally rendering a finished still image for each frame independently. Joint processing gives the model access to temporal context and lets it maintain relationships such as a person’s position relative to a doorway or a vehicle’s trajectory.
3. A decoder renders the result
After generation, a video decoder maps the latent representation into pixel frames. A separate enhancement cascade may add detail or increase resolution, but those stages cannot reliably repair a fundamentally incorrect action or identity established in the base generation.

Diffusion video models learn to reverse a noising process. During training, clean latent videos are progressively corrupted, and a denoiser learns to predict a cleaner version. During generation, the model starts with random latent noise and removes it over multiple steps while following the conditioning signal.
- Start with noise. The initial latent has no recognizable scene, only a random pattern with the requested shape, duration, and sometimes frame rate.
- Predict a cleaner latent. A neural network estimates the noise or clean signal at the current step. Its attention layers consider text and the surrounding space-time tokens.
- Repeat denoising. A scheduler updates the latent through many iterations. Early steps establish composition and broad motion; later steps refine edges, textures, and details.
- Decode the final latent. Once the sequence is sufficiently clean, the decoder produces frames and optional enhancement models refine them.
OpenAI’s Sora System Card (2024) summarizes the process as starting with a base video that looks like static noise and gradually transforming it by removing noise over many steps. More denoising steps can improve fidelity but increase latency; the exact quality-speed balance depends on the model and inference settings.
Are AI video models just image generators applied frame by frame?
No. Frame-by-frame image generation would tend to produce flicker, changing identities, inconsistent lighting, and broken object trajectories. Video systems generally encode temporal information and generate multiple frames jointly or predict latent dynamics with explicit time-aware components.

Temporal modeling still has limits. A model can preserve a face for several seconds yet lose details after an occlusion, merge objects during contact, or change the number of fingers or wheels. The difficulty rises with longer clips, rapid camera motion, reflections, crowds, and interactions that require precise physical reasoning.
Why joint context helps
Sora’s system card says the model gains “foresight of many frames at a time,” which helps keep a subject consistent when it temporarily leaves the field of view. That foresight is an architectural advantage over treating each frame as an unrelated image: the network can use earlier and later evidence when deciding what should appear after an occlusion.
What makes temporal consistency so difficult?
A still image mainly needs spatial plausibility. Video must satisfy several constraints simultaneously:
- Identity: faces, clothing, logos, and distinctive objects should remain the same.
- Shape and topology: bodies and objects should not stretch, duplicate, or change parts unexpectedly.
- Camera geometry: perspective, horizon lines, lens effects, and parallax must evolve coherently.
- Interactions: hands must meet objects, feet must contact the ground, and collisions must have plausible timing.
- Motion dynamics: acceleration, momentum, walking cycles, cloth, water, and smoke need consistent temporal behavior.
- Continuity: lighting, shadows, scenery, and scene layout should survive cuts or camera moves.
- Timing: actions must occur at a sensible rate for the requested frame rate and duration.
An open-model overview groups adherence to inputs, realism, aesthetics, motion dynamics, spatiotemporal consistency, frame rate, and duration as concurrent goals, while memory and latency constrain what can be generated in practice.
How do transformers process video tokens?
Transformers use attention to relate tokens. In a video model, each token can represent a small spatial patch over one or more time slices. Attention lets a token representing a hand consult nearby arm tokens, earlier positions of the hand, the text instruction, and distant scene context.

Processing every token against every other token becomes expensive as resolution, duration, or frame rate increases. Architectures therefore use compression, local or windowed attention, causal layouts, and other efficiency techniques. Google’s W.A.L.T. publication describes causal compression and window attention to reduce memory demands while modeling spatial and spatiotemporal structure.
What is the difference between diffusion and autoregressive video models?
Diffusion models refine an entire noisy latent sequence through repeated denoising. Autoregressive systems predict a sequence of tokens or latent states step by step. Hybrid cascades combine a base generator with enhancement stages.
| Approach | How it generates | Strengths | Trade-offs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Diffusion | Starts from noise and iteratively denoises latent video. | High sample quality, flexible text and visual conditioning, and joint space-time generation. | Multiple inference steps add latency and compute cost. | Prompted clips, animation, and editing. |
| Autoregressive dynamics | Predicts latent tokens or states sequentially, often conditioned on actions. | Natural fit for controllable, interactive environments and learned dynamics. | Sequential prediction can be slower and errors may accumulate over time. | Interactive world or game-like simulations. |
| Hybrid cascade | Uses a base latent generator, then one or more spatial or temporal super-resolution models. | Separates composition from detail and can produce larger or smoother output. | Extra models increase compute, latency, and opportunities for artifacts. | High-resolution delivery pipelines. |
Google DeepMind’s Genie illustrates a non-diffusion design: a spatiotemporal video tokenizer, an autoregressive dynamics model, and a latent action model trained from unlabelled internet videos. It predicts dynamics in learned latent space rather than using a diffusion denoiser as its central generator.
How do image-to-video and video-to-video systems differ from text-to-video?
They add visual evidence to the conditioning path. An image-to-video model receives a starting frame and must infer plausible motion, camera behavior, and scene continuation. A video-to-video model can preserve more of the source timing or composition while changing style, content, or selected regions.

Sora’s published capabilities include animation, extension, looping, and filling missing frames. These operations require the model to condition on existing frames and predict compatible content rather than inventing an entire scene from text alone. Stronger visual conditioning can improve identity and layout, but it also limits the range of transformations and may carry unwanted artifacts from the source.

Why do generated videos contain glitches?
Artifacts usually reflect conflicts between the prompt, the learned data distribution, and the limits of temporal modeling. Long or ambiguous prompts can overload conditioning; unusual camera moves may be underrepresented in training; and extending a clip compounds small errors.
Common symptoms and practical responses
- Flickering details: Reduce simultaneous style changes, simplify the background, or provide a stronger reference image.
- Identity drift: Use image or video conditioning, shorter shots, and explicit descriptions of stable clothing or features.
- Broken interactions: Describe one physical action at a time and avoid crowded contact scenes when exact choreography matters.
- Object popping: Keep camera movement and subject trajectories simple; generate shorter segments and edit them together.
- Soft or unstable output: Check whether the base model’s resolution is being upscaled by a separate enhancement stage; super-resolution adds detail but cannot guarantee factual correction.
How much data and compute do these models need?
Training requires large collections of video and substantial accelerator infrastructure because the model must learn appearance and motion across many tokens. Compression lowers the cost compared with predicting every pixel directly, while attention patterns and causal or windowed designs control memory use.

Inference cost depends on latent dimensions, clip length, frame rate, denoising steps, model size, and enhancement cascades. A longer, higher-resolution clip can require disproportionately more memory because it contains more space-time tokens. Hosted services hide this hardware complexity, while local deployment requires compatible accelerators, enough memory, model weights, and licensing that permits the intended use.
What should you expect from current AI video generation?
These systems are best understood as probabilistic scene and motion generators, not deterministic physics engines. They can produce convincing short shots, transform references, and explore visual ideas quickly, but they may fail on exact counting, continuous identity, text rendered inside scenes, and precise multi-step actions. Treat duration, resolution, frame rate, and parameter figures as configuration-specific, and plan for selection, prompting, and editing rather than assuming one generation will be final.

Can AI video models generate synchronized sound as well as pictures?
Some products pair a video generator with separate speech, music, or sound-effect models, but the core latent-video pipeline described here generates visual frames. Audio timing and lip synchronization therefore depend on additional models or post-production, not automatically on the video denoiser.
Why does extending a generated clip often reduce quality?
An extension must condition on the previous endpoint while predicting new motion and appearance. Any small identity, geometry, or lighting error at the join becomes evidence for later frames, so drift and artifacts can accumulate across repeated extensions.
Do more parameters guarantee a better video model?
No. Parameter count measures model capacity, not the quality of its data, tokenizer, temporal architecture, conditioning, sampler, or safety tuning. A smaller model with better compression or task-specific training can outperform a larger one for a particular shot.
Can these models obey exact physical laws?
They learn statistical regularities from video rather than calculating a complete physical simulation. They may approximate gravity, collisions, or fluid motion in familiar settings, but unusual forces, precise measurements, and long-horizon interactions remain unreliable.
