Compare industrial cybersecurity platforms by how safely and accurately they identify assets, monitor industrial communications, prioritize operational risk, and fit your response process—not by feature counts alone. OT systems control physical processes and have performance, reliability, and safety requirements that make agent installation, active scanning, frequent patching, or downtime unacceptable in some environments. Start with those constraints, then test shortlisted products on representative traffic and sites.

What should an industrial cybersecurity platform do?

An industrial cybersecurity platform should help an organization understand what is connected to its operational technology (OT), detect security-relevant changes or behavior, and guide a safe response. OT includes systems such as programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote terminal units (RTUs), human-machine interfaces (HMIs), supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), distributed control systems (DCS), and building-automation or transportation systems—technology that interacts with the physical world.

That makes OT security different from simply extending an IT monitoring product into a plant. NIST’s initial public draft of SP 800-82 Rev. 4 describes its guidance as improving OT security while addressing “their unique performance, reliability, and safety requirements.” A detection or response mechanism that is acceptable on a standard office network may be disruptive or unsafe in a production environment. The platform must provide useful visibility without assuming that every asset can run an agent, tolerate active probes, or be taken offline for maintenance.

“Platform” can refer to different combinations of software, network sensors, cloud services, threat intelligence, and integrations. Ask vendors to specify what is included in the product they propose, what must be deployed at each site, and which capabilities depend on other products or services. Compare the complete operating model, not just the dashboard.

Which capabilities should you compare first?

Evaluate capabilities in the order your organization needs to use them: establish an accurate asset picture, understand communications and vulnerabilities, detect threats, then route and manage response. A broad feature list is not proof that the platform can perform those tasks in your plants and remote sites.

Asset discovery and inventory

Check whether discovery identifies device type, vendor, model, firmware, location, network zone, criticality, and communications. The practical question is not just how many devices the product can see, but how much usable detail it provides for the assets that matter. Microsoft documents agentless discovery and network-layer monitoring for OT and IoT devices, but the percentage of devices a product can identify in your environment must be demonstrated against your own asset mix.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask how the product distinguishes similar devices, handles incomplete or conflicting metadata, and updates records when a device changes or moves. Confirm whether inventory can be reconciled with existing asset-management records, and whether operators can see the confidence or source behind an identification. An inventory that is current and understandable is more useful for planning and incident triage than a larger list of unverified observations.

Passive monitoring and industrial protocol coverage

Determine which industrial protocols the platform decodes and what it can infer from observed traffic. Ask for coverage by protocol and relevant device family, not a single total that may hide gaps in your environment. Also establish whether the sensors can observe low-bandwidth links, remote locations, or segmented and air-gapped networks, and how much active probing is required.

Dragos says its platform collects network data across “600+ ICS protocols.” That is a vendor-reported coverage figure, not an independent test of detection quality or a guarantee that the protocols and device behaviors you use are covered. Have the vendor map its supported protocols and relevant decoded fields to traffic from your plants, substations, or remote sites. Clarify what happens when communications are encrypted, unusual, or outside the platform’s supported protocol set.

Vulnerability context and prioritization

Compare how the platform connects vulnerabilities to identified devices and firmware, presents CVE and CVSS information, and incorporates compensating controls or operational context. A severity score alone does not tell a plant team what to fix first: a remediation may be constrained by safety, uptime, vendor support, or a required maintenance window.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Microsoft documents CVE details, CVSS scores, device-inventory views, workbooks, and remediation recommendations in its OT security offering. During an evaluation, ask the vendor to show how a finding becomes an actionable decision for an operator: what evidence supports the match, what assumptions affect priority, and whether the recommended mitigation can be used when patching is not immediately possible. Do not treat a product’s prioritization as permission to bypass engineering change control.

Threat detection and intelligence

Ask what behaviors the platform is designed to detect, including abnormal OT communications, known industrial malware, credential misuse, lateral movement, and activity associated with threats to physical operations. Request an explanation of the evidence behind an alert and how an analyst distinguishes a suspicious event from a legitimate engineering or process change.

Dragos describes OT-specific threat detection enriched by industrial threat intelligence. Its product page also reports “Research on 26+ OT adversary groups” and training on “5+ petabytes of OT telemetry and adversary research.” Treat these as vendor-reported descriptions of its research and data, not independent benchmarks of detection performance. Ask for a proof of value using safe, agreed-upon scenarios and representative traffic; avoid introducing disruptive activity into production merely to test a detector.

Response workflow and integration

Compare how an alert is triaged, assigned, escalated, and documented, and whether the platform supports playbooks or case management. Dragos documents response playbooks and case-management workflows. Microsoft documents integration into Defender inventory and exposure workflows. These are different workflow claims, so test the tasks your team actually performs rather than assuming that integrations with a named suite cover every operational need.

Map required connections to your SIEM, SOAR, identity, firewall, network access control (NAC), vulnerability-management, and ticketing systems. Microsoft’s OT connectors can ingest asset and vulnerability data from Armis, Dragos, and Forescout into Security Exposure Management. Confirm what data is transferred, how often it updates, whether integrations are available in the specific deployment model you need, and who owns any connector configuration or maintenance.

How should deployment and resilience affect the shortlist?

Choose a deployment model that matches the network design and operating constraints of each site. A cloud-connected design, a fully on-premises installation, and a hybrid design have different connectivity, administration, and data-flow implications; a platform should not be shortlisted on the assumption that every plant can communicate with a cloud service.

Microsoft lists cloud-connected, fully on-premises, and hybrid deployment options for its OT offering. Verify which options apply to the specific product and functionality being quoted. For each candidate, document sensor placement, remote-site connectivity, bandwidth needs, data retention, and behavior during a network outage. If any zone is air-gapped or tightly segmented, ask how inventory, alerting, updates, and administrative access work there rather than treating “supports OT” as a sufficient answer.

Deployment resilience is also an operational question. Establish what happens if a sensor, management service, or connection fails, and whether monitoring can continue locally. Determine how software updates are delivered and approved, who can change sensor settings, and how a configuration change is tested before it reaches a production network. These details should be resolved with the vendor and your site engineers before rollout.

Which vendor category fits your environment?

One 2026 market comparison groups representative products into three practical lanes: OT-native specialists, broad XIoT or asset-intelligence platforms, and IT-security extensions. These lanes help narrow a shortlist, but they do not prove that one category is universally superior; vendors overlap, and the relevant capabilities must be validated in the intended deployment.

Market lane Representative vendors When to evaluate this lane Evidence to validate
OT-native specialists Claroty, Nozomi Networks, Dragos Consider when protocol-aware discovery and distributed-site monitoring are central requirements. Dragos is a candidate for operators prioritizing OT asset visibility, industrial threat intelligence, vulnerability prioritization, response playbooks, and broad ICS protocol monitoring. Coverage for your actual device families and protocols; site and sensor design; the operational workflow behind alerts and response.
Broad XIoT or asset-intelligence platforms Armis, Forescout Consider when IT, OT, IoT, and IoMT assets need to be managed within one estate model. Whether OT devices receive the protocol detail and operational context your teams need, rather than only fitting into a broad inventory.
IT-security extensions Microsoft Defender for IoT, Tenable OT Security, Palo Alto Networks Industrial OT Security Consider when you want OT exposure management or network-security capabilities aligned with an existing enterprise security stack. Microsoft Defender for IoT may suit Microsoft-centric organizations seeking agentless visibility, CVE/CVSS context, and Defender or Sentinel workflow integration. Deployment constraints, product-specific OT coverage, the depth of integrations you require, and what is included in the proposed configuration.

The category names are a shortlist aid, not a verdict about product quality. For example, an existing enterprise security relationship may simplify workflow alignment, but it does not establish that a product can passively identify the specific controllers and protocols in a plant. Conversely, a specialist’s industrial focus does not by itself establish that its deployment, integration, or staffing requirements fit your organization.

How can you run a proof of value without disrupting production?

Use a proof of value to answer a limited set of procurement questions using representative traffic and sites. Agree on scope, success criteria, safety boundaries, and data handling before any sensor is connected; the goal is to evaluate visibility and workflow, not to create production risk.

  1. Select representative locations and assets. Include the kinds of sites, network segments, devices, and protocols that matter to the decision, including remote or constrained locations if they are in scope. Identify assets that must not be actively probed or otherwise disturbed.
  2. Set measurable questions in advance. Define which device fields must be identified, which protocols must be decoded, which vulnerability details must be available, and how an alert should reach the responsible team. Use a known asset list or other agreed reference to assess inventory accuracy.
  3. Agree on monitoring and safety boundaries. Specify where sensors may connect, whether monitoring is passive, who approves changes, and what activity is prohibited. Have site operations and engineering teams review the plan before deployment.
  4. Exercise the workflow with safe evidence. Review observed communications and alerts with security and OT staff. Use vendor demonstrations or pre-agreed safe scenarios to examine detection and triage; do not inject malware or conduct disruptive tests on a live process.
  5. Record gaps and operating effort. Track unidentified devices, unsupported protocols, missing context, noisy or unclear alerts, integration work, and time required from analysts and engineers. Distinguish a product limitation from a scope or configuration issue and document any assumptions.
  6. Decide against the same criteria for every finalist. Compare the resulting inventory, actionable findings, response workflow, deployment fit, and operating effort. Preserve the test scope and limitations with the decision so results are not generalized to sites or assets that were not evaluated.

What should you ask vendors before buying?

Use questions that force vendors to explain performance in your environment and expose deployment assumptions. Ask for written answers tied to the proposed configuration, not broad statements about platform capabilities.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • What percentage of our PLCs, RTUs, HMIs, historians, and engineering workstations can you identify without installed agents?
  • Which protocols and device families can you decode at our plants, substations, and remote sites, and which relevant fields will the product show?
  • Can the proposed configuration operate fully on-premises or in segmented and air-gapped zones? What functions, if any, require external connectivity?
  • How are vulnerabilities prioritized for operational impact, safety, exploitability, firmware match confidence, and compensating controls?
  • Which integrations are available for our SIEM, SOAR, NAC, firewall, ticketing, and vulnerability tools, and what data flows through each one?
  • What sensor, bandwidth, storage, support, and staffing assumptions drive the three-year cost?
  • Can you run a proof of value on representative traffic under agreed safety boundaries without disrupting production?

How should you compare total cost of ownership?

Do not compare subscription prices without comparing what is included and how the vendor measures the billable unit. A platform may be priced by assets, devices, sites, sensors, or throughput; ask for the proposed unit, the counting method, and how changes in the estate affect renewal costs.

Build a three-year model that includes the recurring subscription and the infrastructure and work needed to operate the system. A current buyer guide identifies subscription unit, sensor and network infrastructure, implementation, support, professional services, and internal analyst or engineering time as important cost drivers. The exact commercial terms vary by proposal, and public cross-vendor price sheets are not established in the available material.

  • Request quotes against the same site list, asset assumptions, deployment model, retention needs, and integration scope.
  • Separate one-time implementation and professional services from recurring subscriptions and support.
  • Include sensor hardware and any network, storage, or connectivity changes required at remote sites.
  • Estimate internal work for approvals, engineering coordination, alert review, integration maintenance, and ongoing tuning.
  • Ask how growth, newly discovered assets, new sites, or changes in throughput affect the commercial unit and renewal.

There is no established independent apples-to-apples performance benchmark or public cross-vendor price sheet in the cited material. A scoped proof of value and a quote based on actual sites, assets, protocols, and integrations are more informative than a generic ranking or unscoped starting price.

What are the most common buying mistakes?

Most avoidable mistakes come from treating a product claim as a result for your environment, or treating an IT workflow as automatically safe for a physical process. Keep evidence, assumptions, and operational responsibility visible throughout selection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Choosing by a single headline metric. Device counts or protocol totals do not establish identification accuracy, alert usefulness, or coverage of your specific traffic. Validate the underlying details against the assets in scope.
  • Assuming agentless means no deployment work. Agentless monitoring avoids installing software on every OT endpoint, but the proposed architecture still needs sensor placement, network visibility, connectivity decisions, and operational ownership.
  • Prioritizing vulnerabilities by score alone. CVSS can be useful context, but operational impact, safety constraints, exploitability, firmware match confidence, and compensating controls also affect what can be done and when.
  • Buying integration claims without testing the workflow. Confirm that the exact data and actions your teams need are available through the specific connector and deployment option being proposed.
  • Running an unsafe or unrepresentative evaluation. A test that probes production systems or covers only a convenient network segment can create risk or yield misleading conclusions. Agree on scope and safety boundaries with site personnel.
  • Underestimating the human operating model. Sensors and alerts do not replace the people who validate findings, coordinate changes, and decide whether remediation is safe. Include both analyst and engineering time in the plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an OT security platform replace a safety system?

No. The platform is a security visibility and response aid, not a substitute for safety instrumented systems, process controls, or site safety procedures. Keep safety decisions and process changes under the authority of the teams responsible for those systems.

Should I connect every plant sensor to the cloud?

Not necessarily. The right data path depends on site connectivity, segmentation, operational policy, and the functions available in the product’s on-premises or hybrid configuration. Ask the vendor to diagram where telemetry, alerts, and administration travel for your exact design.

Does agentless monitoring mean the platform sees every OT device?

No. Agentless discovery can provide visibility from network observations, but coverage depends on what traffic is observable, the protocol support, and the device information available from that traffic. Validate identification against a known sample rather than assuming universal coverage.

Are vendor-reported threat or asset figures independently verified?

Not by the cited material. Figures published by a vendor should be treated as that vendor’s claims unless an independent methodology and validation are supplied.
