Incognito mode and a VPN protect different parts of your browsing. A private window mainly limits what your browser saves on your device after the session. A VPN changes your network route, which can reduce what your internet provider or local network sees, but it shifts trust to the VPN provider. Neither makes you anonymous, hides you from a site where you sign in, or protects you from every malicious website. Choose based on who you want to limit—not on the assumption that either tool is a complete privacy shield.

What is the difference between Incognito mode and a VPN?

Incognito mode is a browser setting; a VPN is a network service. A private window changes how the browser handles some local session data. A VPN changes how your device connects to the internet. They address different observers, so one is not a substitute for the other.

Question Incognito or private browsing VPN
What does it change? How the browser stores certain data for a private session on that device. The route your internet traffic takes, shifting some network visibility and trust to the VPN provider.
What happens after use? In Chrome, closing all Incognito windows ends the session and removes session site data and the record of visited sites from the device. Downloads and bookmarks remain. Google Chrome Help Using a VPN does not itself clear the browser’s local history or session data.
Can it hide activity from websites? No. Websites can still observe activity, and a site can identify you if you sign in. A VPN changes the network route and apparent IP address, but does not erase account identity or guarantee anonymity.
Can it limit what a school, employer, or internet provider sees? Private browsing does not hide activity from network operators. It may be relevant to network-path visibility, but the VPN provider becomes another party to trust. CISA’s personal VPN guidance
Does it stop malware or phishing? Not as a general protection. Edge says InPrivate does not itself protect against malicious sites. Do not treat a VPN as a defense against malware, phishing, or social engineering.
Does it block tracking? It depends on the browser and its settings. Firefox describes tracker protections in Private Browsing; Edge says InPrivate does not add tracking protection by default. Do not assume a VPN blocks cookies or all forms of tracking.

Google describes Incognito as a way to “browse the web more privately,” but that product guidance is not a promise that activity is hidden from every observer. Its help page also explains that websites and network operators may still see activity. Google Chrome Help

What does Incognito mode do—and what does it not do?

A private window is useful when you want to reduce what remains in the browser on a shared device after you finish. It is not a way to conceal browsing from the websites you visit or from the network carrying your traffic.

What it can do

In Chrome, an Incognito session ends when you close all Incognito windows. Chrome then removes the session site data and record of visited sites from the device. Downloads and bookmarks are not removed. That can help keep the next person using the browser from seeing the session in its ordinary history, but it is not a promise that every trace of your activity disappears from the device.

The details vary by browser. Firefox Support says Private Browsing blocks third-party cookies and content trackers by default. Microsoft says Edge InPrivate does not add tracking protection by default. These are browser-specific behaviors, not features to assume in every private window; settings and versions can affect what is available. Firefox Support · Microsoft Edge

What it cannot do

  • Hide activity from a website: The site you visit can still observe your activity. If you sign in, the site can associate that activity with your account.
  • Hide activity from a network operator: A private window does not prevent a school, employer, or internet provider from observing network activity. The FTC also cautions that private browsing does not stop websites from seeing online activity. FTC consumer guidance
  • Remove everything you save: In Chrome, downloaded files and bookmarks remain after the private session closes. Close the windows, then handle any files or bookmarks separately if you do not want them left behind.
  • Protect against malicious sites: Private browsing is not a general malware or phishing defense. Edge explicitly says InPrivate does not itself protect against malicious sites. Microsoft Edge

To use one, open your browser’s menu and choose its private-window option—called Incognito in Chrome, Private Browsing in Firefox, and InPrivate in Edge. The exact menu path can vary by browser version and device. When finished, close every private window; in Chrome, closing just one while another Incognito window is open does not end the session.

What does a VPN protect, and what does it leave exposed?

A VPN changes the path your traffic takes across the network. That can make it relevant when your concern is visibility along that path, but it does not make you invisible to websites, erase browser data, or guarantee that the VPN provider handles your data in a way you want.

CISA’s personal VPN guidance describes a trade-off: a personal VPN shifts residual risks from the internet service provider to the VPN provider. CISA also warns that some free and commercial providers have questionable security and privacy policies. A VPN is therefore a change in whom you trust—not the disappearance of trust requirements. CISA personal VPN guidance

When a VPN is connected, the apparent IP address seen by a website may change, but that does not remove other ways a site can recognize you. Signing in still identifies your account. The sources do not establish a universal set of visibility outcomes for every VPN service, configuration, site, or network, so avoid treating “VPN connected” as synonymous with “private from everyone.”

A VPN also does not itself clear cookies or local browser history. Nor should it be treated as a substitute for caution with links, downloads, passwords, or suspicious messages. CISA notes that VPNs can have vulnerabilities and are only as secure as the devices connected to them. CISA advisory

When should you use a private window?

Choose a private window when your main goal is to limit the browser information left on the device after a session—particularly when you share that device or browser profile. It is useful for local-session privacy, not for hiding activity from a network or a website.

  1. Open a new private window. Use the browser menu and select Incognito, Private Browsing, or InPrivate. Browser labels and controls differ.
  2. Use the window for the session you want separated. Remember that the websites you visit can still observe activity, and signing in lets a site connect activity to your account.
  3. Close all private windows when done. In Chrome, the session ends only when all Incognito windows are closed.
  4. Check what you saved. Chrome retains downloaded files and bookmarks, so closing the private window does not remove those items.
  5. Choose tracking controls separately. Check the browser’s privacy settings rather than assuming every private mode blocks trackers in the same way. The FTC notes that browser controls vary. FTC consumer guidance

This is a reasonable choice for a quick session on a shared browser when the concern is someone later opening that browser and finding its private-session history. It is not a reliable answer if the concern is an employer’s network monitoring, a website linking visits to an account, or a malicious download.

When should you use a VPN?

Consider a VPN when the concern is network-path visibility or when an organization requires a VPN for secure remote access. Before relying on a personal service, decide whether you trust its provider and understand its privacy practices.

For a personal network-privacy concern

Start by naming the observer you are concerned about. If the concern is an internet provider or local network, a VPN may be relevant because it changes the route and shifts trust toward the VPN provider. If the concern is a website recognizing your account, a VPN does not solve that problem. If the concern is browser history remaining on a shared device, a VPN does not clear it.

Assess the provider rather than assuming all VPNs have the same security or privacy practices. CISA’s guidance specifically warns about provider-policy risks, including among some free and commercial services. The evidence here does not establish a particular provider as safe, nor does it support a universal guarantee about what every provider logs or can see. CISA personal VPN guidance

For work or organizational access

An organization-provided VPN has a distinct purpose: enabling employees to connect securely to the organization’s network remotely. CISA’s 2021 home cybersecurity tip sheet describes that managed-access use case. Follow your organization’s instructions, because its VPN requirement is not the same as a general recommendation to buy a personal VPN. CISA tip sheet

VPNs can have vulnerabilities, and a VPN does not make an unsafe connected device safe. CISA’s advisory on VPN vulnerabilities is a reminder that using one is not a substitute for keeping devices and their software secure. CISA advisory

Should you use Incognito mode and a VPN together?

You can use both if your concerns are different: a private window can reduce browser session data left on the device, while a VPN changes the network route. Together they do not create anonymity, prevent a signed-in site from identifying you, or guarantee protection from malicious sites.

Think of them as separate controls rather than layers that automatically solve every privacy problem. If you use both, still close all private windows, check for files or bookmarks you want removed, and decide whether the VPN provider is trustworthy for your needs. A private window does not validate a VPN provider; a VPN does not change the browser’s private-session cleanup.

How do you choose the right tool for the observer?

Identify the observer and the information you want to limit before choosing a setting or service. The same tool can help with one concern and do nothing for another.

Your concern Better fit What to keep in mind
Someone else using your device may see the browser session later. Private browsing Close all private windows. Downloads and bookmarks may remain.
A website may connect your activity to your account. Neither tool alone Signing in identifies you to that site; a VPN does not erase account identity.
Your school, employer, or internet provider may observe network activity. A VPN may be relevant Private browsing does not hide network activity. A VPN shifts trust to its provider; use an organization-required VPN for managed access as instructed.
You want to reduce third-party tracking. Browser-specific tracking controls Protections vary. Firefox and Edge describe different defaults for private windows.
You want protection from malware, phishing, or a malicious website. Neither as a complete defense Edge says InPrivate does not itself protect against malicious sites, and CISA cautions that VPNs can have vulnerabilities.

Browser tracking controls are a separate decision from private-window history and VPN routing. The FTC says controls vary among browsers, and its guidance cautions that private browsing does not stop websites from seeing online activity. Check the settings and explanations for the specific browser and version you use instead of assuming one label guarantees a particular protection. FTC consumer guidance

What should you remember before relying on either one?

  • Match the tool to the observer: private browsing mainly addresses what remains in the browser on the device; a VPN changes the network route and changes whom you trust.
  • Keep account identity in view: a site can recognize you when you sign in, whether or not you use a VPN or private window.
  • Check the actual browser: private-mode behavior, especially tracker protection, differs by browser and may vary by device, market, settings, or version. Microsoft notes that Edge feature functionality may vary by device, market, and browser version. Microsoft Edge
  • Do not equate privacy with security: neither tool is a complete defense against malicious sites, and a VPN cannot compensate for vulnerabilities on connected devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a VPN stop websites from knowing who I am?

No. A VPN can change the apparent IP address, but a website can still associate activity with an account when you sign in. An IP change is not the same as anonymity.

Does Incognito mode hide browsing from my employer or school?

No. Private browsing affects browser data stored on the device; it does not hide network activity from an employer, school, or internet provider. A VPN may be relevant to network-path visibility, but a VPN provider then becomes another party to trust.

Can I use a VPN without opening a private window?

Yes. They are separate tools: a VPN changes the network route, while a private window changes how the browser handles a session on the device. Decide which concern you are addressing rather than assuming one requires the other.

Does private browsing block trackers in every browser?

No. Firefox Support describes tracker protections in Private Browsing, while Edge says InPrivate does not add tracking protection by default. Check the specific browser’s settings and documentation.
