Yes, but it is a separate game. Nintendo has announced Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 on 25 February 2027. It promises higher resolution and frame rate, includes the Expansion Pass, adds Calamity Mode and GameShare, and lets existing owners transfer their original save data. The current Switch release remains playable through backward compatibility, but the cited comparison found a 30fps cap and visible shimmering, so it does not provide the full technical upgrade Switch 2 owners may expect.
Does Age of Calamity get a Nintendo Switch 2 upgrade?
Nintendo’s proper upgrade is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity – Definitive Edition, a Switch 2-only product rather than a performance patch for the original cartridge or download. Nintendo lists 25 February 2027 as its release date and says the game has enhanced resolution and frame rate, more enemies on screen, the Expansion Pass, Calamity Mode and GameShare.

The distinction matters: Nintendo’s eShop notice says the Nintendo Switch version cannot be upgraded directly to the Switch 2 version. Owners therefore have a separate purchase decision, although Nintendo advertises a digital-owner discount.
Is the original Switch version good enough on Switch 2?
It is playable now and loads faster, but backward compatibility does not remove the original game’s technical limits. In a 5 November 2025 comparison, RPG Site’s Mikhail Madnani measured dashboard-to-title loading at 15 seconds on Switch 2 versus 31–33 seconds on Switch OLED. Battle loading took 23 seconds on Switch 2 versus 34 seconds on Switch OLED.

That comparison still recorded a 30fps cap, with shimmering and aliasing visible during play. The faster loading comes from Switch 2 hardware, not a game-specific rendering update. In practical terms, the original release is a reasonable way to play immediately if you already own it, but it is not equivalent to a native enhanced edition.
What does Definitive Edition add?
Nintendo has confirmed several upgrades and additions, while leaving the exact frame-rate target unpublished on the cited product pages.
- Enhanced presentation: Nintendo promises improved resolution and frame rate, but has not specified whether the game will run at 60fps or given another numerical target.
- More combat density: Nintendo says battles can display more enemies on screen.
- Expansion Pass included: The fighter roster rises from 18 to 21 with the included content.
- Calamity Mode: A new mode is part of the Definitive Edition package.
- GameShare: The edition supports local play or online GameChat through GameShare. A Nintendo Switch 2 system must initiate the GameShare session.
Independent launch testing is not available yet, so claims about final frame-rate stability, image quality in every mode or loading times should wait until the release version is measured.
How do the two versions compare?
| Decision point | Original Switch game on Switch 2 | Definitive Edition |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Playable now through backward compatibility | Announced for 25 February 2027 |
| Performance | 30fps cap in the cited comparison; faster loading, but shimmering and aliasing remain | Enhanced resolution and frame rate promised; numerical target not stated |
| Content | Base game and any original Switch DLC you own | Base game, Expansion Pass, Calamity Mode and more enemies on screen |
| Save data | Original save is the source for a forward transfer | Receives original saves; its saves cannot transfer back |
| DLC | Original Switch DLC remains tied to the original version | Expansion Pass included; original Switch DLC is not compatible |
| Multiplayer feature | Existing modes | GameShare for local play or online GameChat; Switch 2 must start GameShare |
| Buying route | No new game purchase if you already own it, with the cited visual compromises | Separate purchase, with a digital discount for eligible existing owners |
Can I transfer my save, and does the DLC carry over?
Original Switch save data can transfer forward into Definitive Edition. The direction is one-way: Definitive Edition save data cannot be transferred back to the original Switch release.

DLC is not reciprocal. Nintendo says original Switch DLC is not compatible with the new product, while Definitive Edition includes the Expansion Pass. Treat the two releases as separate software packages even when your progress moves from the older one to the newer one.
Do I have to buy the game again?
If you own the original digitally, Nintendo says the owner discount is activated automatically on your Nintendo Account. Physical owners must insert the game card, update the game to version 1.4.0 or later, launch it and choose “Proceed to Nintendo eShop” to activate the discount flow.
The discount does not turn the original into a free upgrade: Definitive Edition remains a separately sold Switch 2 product. Nintendo’s product notification also states that it is only compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.
What should you do now?
Buy or play the original now if you want immediate access
Switch 2 backward compatibility gives the original release shorter loading times than Switch OLED in the cited comparison. Accept the 30fps ceiling and image shimmer, and keep the original version’s DLC with that version.

Wait for Definitive Edition if image quality and added content matter
Waiting until 25 February 2027 is the clearer route for a native presentation, the Expansion Pass, Calamity Mode, denser battles and GameShare. Nintendo has not yet stated a precise frame-rate target, so do not treat “enhanced frame rate” as a confirmed 60fps promise.
Prepare your ownership path
Keep the original save on the Switch or Switch 2 system until you complete the forward transfer. If you own a physical copy, update it to version 1.4.0 or later before following the eShop prompt. Definitive Edition’s estimated install size is 22 GB, and Nintendo specifies microSD Express storage for Switch 2 expansion.

For players who already own Age of Calamity, the answer depends on priorities. The current game is usable today, but the 30fps cap and persistent aliasing mean backward compatibility is a stopgap. Definitive Edition is the first announced route that addresses presentation while bundling the Expansion Pass and new modes. Its separate-product pricing, one-way save movement and incompatible original DLC are the costs of that upgrade path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Definitive Edition run at 60fps?
Nintendo has only promised an enhanced frame rate. Its cited product information does not publish a 60fps target, so any exact performance claim should wait for Nintendo’s final specifications or launch measurements.

Can I keep playing the original game after transferring my save?
Yes, the original release remains a separate playable title. However, progress made in Definitive Edition cannot be sent back to the original Switch version, so the two save paths will diverge after transfer.
Does GameShare work if the other player owns no copy?
Nintendo describes GameShare as supporting local play or online GameChat, with a Switch 2 system initiating the session. The exact participant requirements and supported modes should be checked in the final software instructions.

How much storage should I reserve for Definitive Edition?
Nintendo estimates a 22 GB installation. Switch 2 storage expansion uses microSD Express cards, so check free space before downloading rather than assuming a standard older microSD card will meet the stated requirement.
