Yes—the original HyperX Cloud Revolver has built-in dynamic 50 mm drivers with neodymium magnets. Kingston lists a 12 Hz–28,000 Hz frequency response, 30 Ω impedance, 104.5 dBSPL/mW sensitivity at 1 kHz, under 2% total harmonic distortion, and 30 mW rated input power (500 mW maximum). In listening tests, it delivers balanced bass and midrange, accurate wired gaming performance, and a strong microphone, although treble consistency and the sense of space depend on the listener and the closed-back design. The later Cloud Revolver + 7.1 is a separate USB-DSP model, so its surround-processing features should not be attributed to the original.
What drivers does the original HyperX Cloud Revolver use?
The original Cloud Revolver uses a pair of dynamic 50 mm drivers with neodymium magnets. Kingston and HyperX describe them as “next-generation directional 50mm drivers” positioned parallel to the ears. The stated aim is to direct sound into the ear for cleaner detail, stronger bass and more precise positioning rather than simply making the drivers larger.

That construction limits sound leakage and provides passive isolation, but it also produces a less open presentation than an open-back headphone. The headset is wired and uses a four-pole 3.5 mm plug; an audio-control-box extension is included for inline controls and microphone routing. Its microphone is detachable and noise cancelling.
The 50 mm measurement describes the driver diaphragm diameter, not the amount of bass or overall fidelity you will hear. Seal around your ears, the acoustic tuning, the device providing the signal and your own hearing all affect the result.

What are the official Cloud Revolver driver and electrical specifications?
Kingston Technology Nordic’s 2016 product information gives the following specifications for the original model. The figures are manufacturer ratings, not a single independent sound-quality score.
| Specification | Original Cloud Revolver | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Transducer type | Dynamic | A moving diaphragm converts the electrical signal into sound. |
| Driver diameter | 50 mm | The nominal diameter of each ear-cup driver. |
| Magnet | Neodymium | The magnet material used in the driver assembly. |
| Headphone frequency response | 12 Hz–28,000 Hz | The manufacturer’s stated range; it does not indicate equal loudness across that range. |
| Impedance | 30 Ω | The electrical load presented to a phone, controller, computer or other source. |
| Sensitivity | 104.5 dBSPL/mW at 1 kHz | Manufacturer sensitivity measured at the stated frequency and power reference. |
| Total harmonic distortion | Under 2% | The manufacturer’s upper specification for harmonic distortion. |
| Rated input power | 30 mW | The stated continuous input rating. |
| Maximum input power | 500 mW | The stated maximum rating; it is not a recommended listening level. |
| Connection | Four-pole 3.5 mm plug with control-box extension | Analog wired operation with microphone and audio contacts. |
The 12 Hz–28,000 Hz figure should not be read as proof that the headset reproduces every frequency at the same volume. Frequency-response curves, seal and tuning determine whether bass, voices and treble sound emphasized or recessed. Likewise, the sensitivity and impedance figures describe how the headset interacts with a source; they do not rank its musicality.
How good is the Cloud Revolver’s sound quality in independent testing?
RTINGS assesses the original Cloud Revolver as a wired, closed-back dynamic headset with generally balanced sound. Its neutral-listening assessment finds good bass and a balanced midrange, while treble delivery varies and can sound less detailed than some alternatives. That combination makes voices and many game effects easy to follow without forcing an extreme bass-heavy signature.
Bass and midrange
The good bass assessment indicates that low-frequency effects have useful weight without overwhelming the midrange in the tested profile. The balanced midrange helps dialogue, vocals and positional cues remain intelligible. Individual units, pad condition and the seal around your ears can change the perceived balance, so two listeners may describe the same headset differently.
Treble and detail
RTINGS reports more variation in treble delivery than in bass or midrange. Some listeners may hear sufficient brightness for footsteps and fine effects, while others may find the top end less detailed than competing designs. This is a reason to treat the headset’s specifications as a starting point rather than a guarantee of a particular tonal result.

Soundstage and separation
The closed-back cups help isolate you from surrounding noise, but RTINGS notes that the presentation is less spacious than open-back headphones. Stereo separation is still useful for games, music and films, yet the sound will not create the same outward, room-like stage associated with an open design.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Is the HyperX Cloud Revolver good for FPS gaming?
Yes, the original is a capable wired FPS headset when you value balanced sound, low latency and a clear microphone over software customization. RTINGS describes it as good for gaming, with balanced sound, a good noise-filtering microphone and negligible latency from the wired connection.
The directional driver placement is intended to send sound directly toward the ears, which can help you distinguish left-right and front-back information when a game’s stereo mix is well made. Imaging is not determined by driver diameter alone: fit, the closed-back seal, the game’s audio engine and your own hearing all contribute to how reliably you locate footsteps or gunfire.
There is no software support for extra customization on the original model. You therefore cannot rely on a manufacturer equalizer or surround-control panel to correct a treble preference or create a different FPS profile. Use the equalizer or spatial-audio controls supplied by your operating system or game only if those controls are available on your platform.
Is the Cloud Revolver suitable for music?
It can work well for listeners who prefer a balanced, closed-back presentation with solid bass and an even midrange. Vocals, podcasts, rock, pop and game soundtracks should benefit from the clear central range reported by RTINGS.

Listeners seeking a very airy presentation may prefer an open-back headphone, because the Cloud Revolver’s closed cups produce a less spacious stage. Those who are highly sensitive to treble variation should also audition it with familiar recordings: RTINGS found the treble less consistent and sometimes less detailed than alternatives. The headset’s 12 Hz–28,000 Hz specification does not by itself predict whether cymbals, strings or vocal sibilance will sound natural.
What is the difference between Cloud Revolver and Cloud Revolver + 7.1?
The names refer to different versions. The original Cloud Revolver is an analog 3.5 mm headset; the later Cloud Revolver + 7.1 keeps 50 mm neodymium drivers but adds a USB control path, digital signal processing and virtual 7.1 surround.
| Feature | Original Cloud Revolver | Cloud Revolver + 7.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Driver design | Dynamic 50 mm drivers with neodymium magnets | 50 mm neodymium drivers |
| Primary connection | Four-pole 3.5 mm analog plug and control-box extension | 3.5 mm connectivity plus a USB DSP/control path |
| Surround processing | No built-in virtual-surround processor stated | Virtual 7.1 processing |
| Software equalizer | No software support for extra customization, according to RTINGS | Tom’s Hardware reports no equalizer in the associated HyperX software |
| Listening observations | Balanced sound, good bass and midrange; variable treble; less spacious closed-back stage | Tom’s Hardware reports a wide soundscape and clear stereo differentiation, while finding the virtual-surround tuning limited |
Tom’s Hardware reviewed the + 7.1 version, not the exact original. Its comments about the wider soundscape, virtual surround and USB processing therefore apply only to that later variant. They should not be used as specifications for an original Cloud Revolver connected solely through its analog plug.
How does the Cloud Revolver connect to computers, consoles and phones?
Kingston announced the original as compatible with PC, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Wii U, Mac and CTIA-compatible mobile devices. The four-pole plug carries stereo audio and microphone signals on devices that follow the CTIA wiring standard.
An Xbox One controller without a 3.5 mm headset port needs an adapter. On a computer with separate headphone and microphone sockets, use the included audio-control-box extension or the appropriate headset splitter arrangement so both channels are connected. The exact port arrangement varies by computer and controller, so check that the plug is fully seated and that the device recognizes a headset microphone.

What should you check before buying or comparing the original model?
Driver size is only one item in a meaningful comparison. Use the following checklist to evaluate the headset against another model or a replacement listing.
- Transducer and tuning: Confirm whether the alternative is dynamic or another design, then look for independent bass, midrange and treble observations rather than relying on diameter.
- Connection: Decide whether a simple analog 3.5 mm connection meets your needs or whether you require USB processing, wireless operation or platform-specific controls.
- Isolation and stage: Closed back helps reduce outside sound and leakage; open back generally offers a more spacious presentation but less isolation.
- Microphone: The original includes a detachable noise-cancelling microphone. Check whether a used unit still includes it and whether any replacement is explicitly compatible with the Cloud Revolver connector.
- Software and equalization: The original has no manufacturer software for extra customization. Do not assume a 7.1 or USB feature exists just because another product in the Revolver family has it.
- Comfort and fit: Circumaural pads and the headband shape affect the seal, pressure and the bass you actually hear during long sessions.
- Condition and availability: Older wired models may be sold as remaining stock or used hardware. Verify the exact model name, included control box, microphone and cable before treating a listing as the original specification.
What are the practical limits of the published specifications?
No independent, universally accepted single number reduces the Cloud Revolver’s sound quality to a score that applies to every listener. The manufacturer’s frequency range, impedance, sensitivity and distortion figures describe measurable design properties, but they do not capture tonal preference, imaging accuracy or perceived spaciousness.
RTINGS’ findings provide useful context but remain an assessment under its own test and listening conditions. Its positive gaming judgment and comments about treble variation should be read together: the headset can be a strong wired gaming choice without being the best match for every music listener or every preferred tonal balance.

What is the clearest verdict on the Cloud Revolver’s drivers and sound?
The original HyperX Cloud Revolver definitely has drivers: dynamic 50 mm neodymium units in a wired, closed-back headset. Its published electrical specifications are respectable, and independent testing supports balanced bass and midrange, a good microphone and negligible wired latency. The main cautions are variable treble detail, a less spacious closed-back stage and the lack of manufacturer software for additional tuning.
If you need analog compatibility across several platforms and prefer a straightforward headset, those characteristics make the original easy to understand. If you specifically want USB processing or virtual 7.1, confirm that you are buying the distinct Cloud Revolver + 7.1 variant rather than the original.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do 50 mm drivers make the Cloud Revolver louder than a headset with smaller drivers?
Not necessarily. Loudness depends mainly on sensitivity, the source’s output and the listening level; the Cloud Revolver is rated at 104.5 dBSPL/mW at 1 kHz, while driver diameter alone does not set volume.
Does the original Cloud Revolver require a USB port?
No. The original model is designed around its four-pole 3.5 mm analog plug and included control-box extension. USB is associated with the later + 7.1 version’s digital signal-processing path, not the original’s basic connection.
