If you want an extraction game you can launch today, choose Escape from Tarkov: its 1.0 release is live on Steam and its PvE Zone is available as a separate purchase. HUNGER is the more unusual prospect—a planned 2026 Early Access extraction RPG about plague-ravaged Napoleonic Europe—but its closed beta ended on 26 October 2026, its Steam page still says “Coming soon,” and no current price is listed. Tarkov is the choice for modern firearms, medical simulation and punishing inventory play. HUNGER is the one to wishlist if you prefer character builds, quests, professions, black-powder weapons and melee, and can wait through Early Access. Neither is universally better; they use extraction mechanics for different kinds of games.

Escape from Tarkov Players seeking the deepest modern gun, ammunition and medical simulation Steam 1.0 released 15 November 2025; PvP and optional AI-only PvE Zone Standard Edition $49.99; PvE Zone add-on $29.99 Windows PC; Steam and Battlestate launcher Oct 2026

Can you play HUNGER or Escape from Tarkov today?

Only Tarkov is a finished, purchasable game right now. Battlestate Games released Escape from Tarkov 1.0 on Steam on 15 November 2025, and the same 1.0 game is available through its own launcher. The Steam listing is for Windows PC and requires a Battlestate account that can be linked to Steam.

GOOD FUN CORPORATION’s HUNGER remains an unreleased Early Access title. Its current Steam information says the team plans to release the Early Access build in 2026 and estimates about two years in Early Access. The closed beta ran through 26 October 2026; an open beta is planned, but no date had been fixed by 28 October. You can wishlist HUNGER, but you cannot buy it or treat its roadmap as a shipped feature list.

What that means for a purchase decision

  • Buy Tarkov if you want a known game, established maps, a live economy and a raid you can start tonight.
  • Wishlist HUNGER if its setting and RPG structure appeal to you more than immediate access, and accept that systems, balance, hardware requirements and price can change.
  • Do not buy a third-party HUNGER date or price claim as fact. The official Steam page is the current reference for its release window and still lists no dollar amount.

What kind of game is HUNGER?

HUNGER is a multiplayer first-person extraction RPG set in a plague-ravaged version of Napoleonic Europe. War and a bacterium of unknown origin have created the “World After the End.” Survivors called the Living operate from a castle hub known as the Chateau, then enter expeditions through forests, villages, monasteries, citadels and mines. Infected creatures are called the Hunger, and rival Living players can take the same loot.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

The loop is familiar but the emphasis is not: choose a Living, prepare a kit in the Chateau, enter alone or with one or two teammates, complete quests, gather resources, fight monsters and players, then extract. Gear can be lost on death, while experience and character level are intended to remain. The planned progression runs from level 1 to 100 and includes more than 100 mastery talents, passive, tactical and ultimate abilities, professions, vendors, a stash and a player-driven marketplace.

GOOD FUN’s chief executive and game director Maximilian Rea has repeatedly rejected the narrow “extraction shooter” label. In the studio’s 9 October 2026 Developer Archives video, the preferred description was “extraction RPG”: an RPG with skill trees, story, crafting and character building that uses an extraction format instead of a linear or open-world structure. That distinction is important. HUNGER is not intended to be a historical reskin of Tarkov with the same progression spine.

What HUNGER is scheduled to contain

  • Three large, distinct maps at Early Access launch, with more planned.
  • More than 40 weapons, including ranged and melee choices, plus gadgets, medicines and tools.
  • Solo, duo and trio expeditions.
  • Gathering and crafting professions, with two professions available at a time in the 2025 preview design.
  • In-depth quests and storylines delivered through Chateau NPCs.
  • Endgame dungeons and boss fights, alongside separate PvP and PvE ambitions.
  • Proximity voice chat and a player marketplace.
  • A promise of no forced wipes and cosmetics that are mostly earned in-game rather than sold through a paid battle pass.

The 2025 preview named Jacques Bridge, Sombre Forest and Sarlat Farm, each described as roughly one square kilometre with an underground dungeon, and listed six Living and six weather or lighting setups per map. Steam’s 2026 page still confirms three maps and more than 40 weapons, but it does not restate those names or the complete character roster. Treat the named maps and preview-era counts as historical examples, not a guaranteed final lineup.

How does combat differ between HUNGER and Tarkov?

Combat is the clearest dividing line. Tarkov models modern firearms, ammunition and trauma in detail. HUNGER uses slow, single-shot black-powder weapons as an opening move before closing for melee, with horror creatures and sound-driven risk shaping every fight.

Combat question HUNGER Escape from Tarkov
Weapons Flintlock pistols and rifles, experimental hand mortars, glass grenades, axes, maces, hammers and spears Modern firearms with extensive ammunition, armour and attachment choices
Tempo Reloading is deliberately slow; a shot often creates an opening for a melee attack Fast lethal engagements depend on weapon handling, ammunition, armour class and hit location
Sound Melee is silent, while gunfire can attract more Hunger Sound, lack of a minimap, lack of a hit marker and lack of a kill feed make information management central
Damage model Armor, bags, trinkets, medicines and shields support the RPG build Per-limb health, fractures, bleeds, armour classes and ammunition penetration are core systems
Closest comparison A historical-horror blend closer to Hunt: Showdown 1896 and melee-focused dungeon games The benchmark for simulation-heavy modern extraction gunplay

HUNGER’s black-powder design changes the value of patience. A missed shot carries a long reload cost, and a loud volley can bring additional enemies. Tarkov instead asks you to identify ammunition, understand penetration and manage medical treatment while another player may be using a superior optic or armour class. If your fantasy is a modern PMC, HUNGER’s flintlocks will feel like a different genre. If you want historical weapons with a melee fallback, Tarkov cannot provide that atmosphere.

How do progression and wipes work?

HUNGER makes the character—not the current backpack—the long-term project. Tarkov gives you a more equipment-centred economy, but its wipe model changed in 2026 and is no longer a universal reset.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Progression issue HUNGER Escape from Tarkov
What persists after death? Experience and Living level are intended to persist; the expedition kit can be lost Gear, ammunition and carried loot can be lost unless secured or successfully extracted; persistent characters keep their progression outside seasonal mode
Long-term spine Mastery talents, character abilities, quests, professions and story progression Equipment, traders, reputation, stash management and the player Flea Market
Wipes GOOD FUN promises no forced wipes Seasonal characters reset automatically every four to six months; PvP Zone and PvE Zone characters are separate and persistent
Build identity Each Living has passive, tactical and ultimate abilities, with specializations such as stealth, lockpicking, faster reloads or party healing Build identity comes primarily from the kit, ammunition, armour, weapons, trader access and economic choices

Battlestate Games’ Patch 1.1.0.0 notes describe seasonal characters as separate from PvP Zone and PvE Zone characters, with progression automatically reset every four to six months when a major update and new season begin. That is an opt-in seasonal structure, not the old assumption that every Tarkov character must be wiped. Check which character type you are creating before investing in a season.

HUNGER’s no-forced-wipe promise is attractive to players who want one continuing Living, but it is still a promise for an Early Access game. The studio can rebalance talents, economy and content during development, and the Steam page does not guarantee that every form of progression will transfer unchanged from Early Access into the eventual full release.

Which game has the better PvE and session structure?

Tarkov already sells a complete AI-only mode. HUNGER’s PvE is a planned part of its roadmap, so it cannot yet be treated as an equivalent product.

Tarkov’s PvE Zone

The PvE Zone is a separate, full version of Tarkov built around AI opponents, its own character and its own economy. Patch 1.2.0.0 reworked PMC bot behaviour, added PvE Prestige and introduced EXFIL Brothers, which lets experienced players queue with newer ones. If you want Tarkov’s medical, ammunition and inventory systems without human PMCs in every raid, this is the available option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HUNGER’s planned PvE

HUNGER’s Steam feature list promises dungeons, bosses and later PvE endgame content, with co-operative expeditions as part of the core design. Those features are not a separate SKU you can add to your library today. A player choosing HUNGER for solo or co-operative PvE is choosing its roadmap and Early Access process, not a finished AI-only mode.

How long is a session?

Tarkov raids can become long because preparation, stash sorting, trader management and post-raid treatment are part of the game. HUNGER’s director told IGN in 2025 that expeditions could be meaningful even when the low end was around 30 to 35 minutes, and that an hour of play should move a character forward. That is a dated design target rather than a guaranteed launch timer, but it signals a more compact RPG expedition model.

Both games make extraction the final test: leaving with loot matters more than merely defeating an enemy. HUNGER adds a social Chateau and quest structure around the raid; Tarkov makes inventory, ammunition and trader planning a larger share of the total session.

How do the settings, parties and social systems compare?

Tarkov is a modern conflict in the fictional Norvinsk region, with private military contractors, Scavs and an industrial urban-rural map set. HUNGER is a plague horror built from Napoleonic Europe, where black-powder weapons, ruined religious sites and infected enemies establish the tone.

  • Party size: HUNGER explicitly supports solo, duo and trio expeditions. Tarkov supports solo play and squad-based PvPvE, but Battlestate’s Steam description does not state an official PMC squad cap.
  • Social hub: HUNGER’s Chateau contains vendors, a stash, quest givers and professions, with proximity voice chat intended to make nearby players part of the risk. Tarkov’s preparation is organised around menus, traders, stash space and the Flea Market rather than a shared role-playing hub.
  • Enemies: HUNGER’s named enemies include Dregs, Shamblers, Waifs, Bloats, Droolers and Brutes. Tarkov’s Scavs and AI PMCs support its military-simulation fiction.
  • Story: GOOD FUN says it wants story infused into every aspect of HUNGER, with named Living such as Hugo, Eva, Serene, Marie and Gabriel. Tarkov’s narrative is delivered through its setting, quests and faction conflict, but its moment-to-moment identity is less character-class driven.

HUNGER’s art direction has been described by Rea as “Renaissance gothic.” That makes it a better fit for players who want a strong historical-horror identity rather than a realistic PMC fantasy.

What do HUNGER and Tarkov cost?

The live price information favours Tarkov because it has a defined store catalogue. The US Steam listing checked in October 2026 shows the Standard Edition at $49.99, with PvE Zone as a $29.99 add-on; the Standard purchase is PvP and does not include PvE. An Unheard Steam bundle includes Standard, Left Behind, Prepare for Escape, PvE Zone and the Unheard expansion. TarCoin is also sold as Steam DLC from $4.99.

HUNGER is paid rather than free-to-play, but its Steam page had not published a US price or edition ladder by 29 October 2026. IGN reported a team target of about $30 for the standard edition in May 2025, with a higher cosmetic “Support the Developers” bundle; that is a dated preview target, not a current offer. GOOD FUN says it plans to raise the price gradually as content and features ship, so waiting can change the eventual entry cost.

Neither game has a physical boxed edition or a first-party strategy guide listed in the available store information. Treat both as digital PC purchases, and avoid confusing a third-party price claim with an official listing.

What PC and account requirements should you check?

Practical requirements

  • HUNGER: Windows PC, Steam, English interface, audio and subtitles, online PvP and online co-op. Steam lists Easy Anti-Cheat with kernel-level anti-cheat. CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements remain TBC; Steam Deck compatibility is unknown.
  • Escape from Tarkov: Windows PC through Steam or the Battlestate launcher, with a Battlestate account. BattlEye is kernel-level anti-cheat and requires manual removal after uninstalling. A console version is in development, but no date has been announced.
  • Content rating: HUNGER’s materials signal intense violence, horror and some nudity; PEGI 18 appears on official video material.
Tarkov Steam requirement Minimum Recommended
Operating system Windows 10 Windows 11
Processor AMD Ryzen 5 3600 or similar Intel Core i7-14700F or better
Memory 16 GB RAM 64 GB RAM
Graphics GTX 1660 or similar RTX 4070 or better
DirectX and storage DirectX 11; 80 GB DirectX 11; 80 GB

Tarkov’s recommended 64 GB of RAM is unusually high for a PC game. Meeting only the minimum does not guarantee a smooth experience in every map or patch, but the published requirement gives you a concrete baseline. HUNGER has not yet published comparable CPU, GPU, RAM or storage numbers, so do not use Tarkov’s list to predict HUNGER performance.

Both titles use kernel-level anti-cheat, which matters for players who avoid that software category. Tarkov’s BattlEye removal requirement is specifically documented on its Steam information; HUNGER’s Steam listing identifies Easy Anti-Cheat but does not publish an equivalent uninstall procedure.

Which game is easier to learn?

Tarkov remains one of the most demanding extraction games for a newcomer. You must learn ammunition penetration, armour classes, limb health, bleeding and fractures, map navigation without a minimap, trader progression, stash economics and the sound cues that reveal a fight. Too Much Gaming described it in 2026 as the genre’s most intimidating and punishing option.

HUNGER is designed to be more readable through quests, named NPCs, talents and professions, but that does not make it “easy Tarkov.” October 2026 closed-beta coverage praised the concept and atmosphere while identifying sluggish movement, uneven character power and inconsistent performance. GOOD FUN’s post-beta work list included movement, vaulting and mantling, level-based power gaps, vendor stock, reconnects, spatialised audio, spear lunges and weapon balance. Those are active development targets, not proof that the final game will solve them.

What a first week looks like

  • In Tarkov: expect to spend as much time learning maps, ammunition and safe extraction routes as fighting. Start with inexpensive kits, keep medical supplies organised and use the PvE Zone if you want to practise against AI.
  • In HUNGER: expect to learn a Living’s abilities, quest flow, profession choices and the timing of black-powder reloads. The no-forced-wipe design should reduce the fear that one death erases all character progress, but lost gear and uneven early balance can still make expeditions costly.

There is no independent study establishing hours-to-competence for either game. Choose based on the systems you want to learn, not a promised number of beginner hours.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Who should choose Escape from Tarkov?

  • You want modern firearms, detailed ammunition and medical simulation.
  • You want a live 1.0 game with established maps, traders and a functioning economy.
  • You will use a dedicated PvE mode that already exists rather than waiting for a roadmap.
  • You enjoy inventory optimisation, Flea Market decisions and the tension of risking a carefully built kit.
  • Your Windows PC can handle the published requirements, especially the unusually high recommended memory target.
  • You are comfortable with a steep tutorial-free learning curve and severe losses after a failed extraction.

For the strongest realism-oriented extraction experience available in this comparison, Tarkov is the practical purchase. Its recent Steam reviews were Mixed: 53% positive among 2,456 reviews in the last 30 days and 62% positive among 13,956 English reviews, accessed 29 October 2026. Those figures describe current reception, not a guarantee of your experience.

Who should choose HUNGER—or wait for it?

  • You want character level, talents, quests and professions to matter more than a gunsmith spreadsheet.
  • You prefer a plague-horror world with flintlocks, silent melee and monsters that react to gunfire.
  • You dislike mandatory wipes and want a Living whose experience is intended to survive death.
  • You usually play solo, as a duo or as a trio and like proximity voice chat and a shared hub.
  • You can wait through a planned two-year Early Access period while features, balance and price evolve.
  • You are willing to accept English-only presentation for now and unknown hardware requirements.

HUNGER is the more distinctive idea, not the safer purchase. Its closed beta drew more than 16,000 concurrent players during Steam Next Fest according to SteamDB figures reported by Notebookcheck, and coverage highlighted its art, audio and flintlock tension. The same coverage recorded concerns about movement, progression balance and performance, while the studio says it is continuing to address those areas.

Should a beginner choose neither?

Yes, if you have never played an extraction game and want a gentler introduction. A more approachable paid option such as ARC Raiders offers console support and a lower entry price, while free-to-play alternatives such as Delta Force and Arena Breakout: Infinite let you learn extraction basics without first committing to Tarkov’s equipment losses or HUNGER’s unfinished roadmap. Those games are alternatives, not evidence that either title in this comparison is unsuitable for everyone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is still unknown about HUNGER?

Several purchase-changing details are intentionally unresolved as of 30 October 2026:

  • The exact Early Access calendar day in 2026.
  • The US Steam price, edition structure and any supporter bundle.
  • Official CPU, GPU, RAM and storage requirements.
  • The date of the open beta.
  • Whether the map names, six-Living roster and preview-era map specifications remain unchanged.
  • Console availability or a release date.

GOOD FUN’s Early Access FAQ says the team plans to add more ranged, melee and weapon types, two more expedition locations, three more Chateau areas, more than six additional Living and more than eight additional Hunger types after launch. Those are development plans, not launch guarantees.

How this comparison is framed

The useful question is not which title has the higher score. The decision turns on readiness, combat model, progression spine, wipe policy, PvE availability, session shape, setting, party size, hardware requirements and learning curve. Tarkov leads on certainty and simulation depth because it is live 1.0. HUNGER leads on novelty and RPG persistence because its design puts characters, quests and professions ahead of modern military equipment. That is why the right choice depends on what you want an extraction loop to serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will HUNGER progress definitely carry from Early Access into the full release?

GOOD FUN promises no forced wipes as a design goal, but the current Early Access information does not guarantee that every level, talent, item or quest state will transfer unchanged into the final release. Major balance or technical changes can still require exceptions, so treat persistence as the intended policy rather than a contractual transfer schedule.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need a separate account to play Escape from Tarkov on Steam?

Yes. The Steam version requires a Battlestate account, and that account can be linked to Steam. Buying the Steam listing does not remove the account requirement.

Is HUNGER connected to Hell Let Loose?

The developers are the former Black Matter team that created the original Hell Let Loose; GOOD FUN CORPORATION is now making HUNGER. Hell Let Loose: Vietnam is a different project from Expression Games, so it should not be treated as HUNGER’s sequel or shared development branch.

Can HUNGER run on Steam Deck?

Steam Deck compatibility is currently unknown. The store page lists Windows and does not provide a verified Deck status, so wait for an official update rather than assuming that the Windows build will be supported.

What happens if I only want to play against AI?

Tarkov has a purchasable PvE Zone with its own character and economy, so it is the available choice for a complete AI-only version now. HUNGER’s dungeons, bosses and broader PvE endgame are planned features for Early Access rather than a released mode.
