YouTube TV is an internet-delivered television subscription that combines a live channel guide, cloud recordings, and network-provided on-demand programs. You choose a predefined plan, sign in on a supported device, and watch without a cable box. The main plan advertises more than 100 broadcast, cable, and regional sports networks, unlimited DVR capacity, and up to three simultaneous devices. What appears in the local-channel row, which commercials you can skip, and how long a recording remains available depend on your location, the network, and whether you are watching live, from the DVR, or on demand.
What is YouTube TV and how does it deliver television?
YouTube TV streams television over your broadband connection instead of using a traditional set-top box. After subscribing, you open the YouTube TV app or website, choose a program, and the service delivers the video from its servers. Your viewing is organized into three distinct sources:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Live TV: Channels play according to their broadcast schedule, with a guide showing what is on now and what is coming next.
- Library recordings: You add a show, movie, sports team, or event to your Library, and YouTube TV records available airings in the cloud.
- On-demand programming: Networks supply episodes, movies, and other titles that you can start whenever they are offered in the catalog.
These sources can show the same series in different forms. A live broadcast follows the current clock, a Library item follows recording rules, and an on-demand episode follows the network’s catalog and advertising policy.
How do YouTube TV’s live channels and guide work?
The Live area is an electronic channel guide. It lists programs airing now and upcoming programs, while Home mixes recommendations with live and on-demand titles. You can customize the guide by hiding networks you do not watch and reordering the remaining channels.

What local channels will I receive?
Local availability is location-based, not identical for every subscriber. YouTube TV uses the ZIP code associated with your home area and your device location to determine which local stations are shown. National networks are generally available in the home area, but a local CBS, FOX, NBC, or similar station depends on the market serving your location.
Consequently, the local row can change when you travel within the United States. A visitor may see the local stations for the city they are visiting rather than the stations from home, while the national portion of the service remains tied to the subscription’s home area. Check the lineup for your ZIP code before subscribing; no single channel list applies nationwide.

Can I change the order of channels?
Yes. In the Live section, use the guide customization controls to hide networks and move others into the order you prefer. The custom order affects how the guide is presented, not which networks your plan includes.
How does YouTube TV’s cloud DVR work?
YouTube TV’s DVR is a cloud service: recordings are stored on YouTube TV’s servers, not on a hard drive in your home. The service advertises no storage-space limit, but “unlimited” does not mean recordings are permanent. Each recording remains playable only until its expiration date.
How do I record a show, game, or movie?
- Open the program’s details page from Home, Live, or search.
- Select Add to Library. For sports, you can usually add a team or event rather than selecting one broadcast manually.
- YouTube TV schedules current and upcoming airings that match the item you added.
- Return to Library to find completed recordings and see scheduled recordings.
Adding a series records eligible future airings as they become available; it does not create a permanent personal copy of every episode ever broadcast. Some sporting events may not be recordable, so an event’s availability in the guide is the practical check.

What playback choices are available?
A recording can offer a choice to start from the beginning, resume where you stopped, watch the live broadcast, or use key-plays viewing when that feature is supported for the sport. The exact choices vary by program and event.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen do recordings expire?
Expiration is controlled by the program’s rights and YouTube TV’s recording rules. The Library indicates whether a title is still available; once it expires, the cloud recording is no longer a guaranteed source. If the network separately supplies the same episode on demand, that version may remain available under different rules, but it is not the same recording.
What is the difference between live TV, DVR recordings, and on-demand content?
The viewing mode determines when a title is available, whether you can pause or skip through it, and how long it remains in your account.
| Source | How it becomes available | Commercial controls | Retention |
|---|---|---|---|
| Live channel | Plays at the network’s scheduled broadcast time | Live ads cannot be fast-forwarded | Not a saved copy unless you add the program to your Library |
| Cloud DVR | You add the show, team, event, or movie to the Library before or during an eligible airing | Ads in DVR recordings can be fast-forwarded | Available until the recording expires |
| Network on demand | The network makes an episode, movie, or other title available in its catalog; some titles appear without a recent live airing | On-demand TV ads typically cannot be skipped | Controlled by the network’s on-demand availability |
For example, you can watch a news program live, record a scheduled drama and skip through its commercials later, or select an on-demand episode immediately. Those choices may lead to different ad loads and different expiration behavior even when the title is identical.
Why can’t I fast-forward every commercial?
Commercial controls follow the source, not simply the channel or show. A live stream is the least flexible: you can pause in many playback situations, but the broadcast’s ads are not fast-forwardable. A DVR recording generally permits fast-forwarding through its recorded ad breaks. An on-demand episode usually carries the network’s inserted advertising and does not normally permit skipping.

What plans does YouTube TV offer, and how much does it cost?
YouTube TV sells predefined packages rather than a build-your-own bundle of individual channels. Its plan lineup includes a main plan plus genre-focused options such as sports and entertainment packages. The channels, local stations, and features attached to a package can vary by location and by the company handling your billing.

|---|---|---|
| Main plan | The overview advertises 100+ broadcast, cable, and regional sports networks, unlimited DVR, and up to three simultaneous devices. | Your ZIP-code lineup, taxes, add-ons, and the current checkout price. |

The signup help page lists the main plan at $82.99 plus tax per month as of October 25, 2026. Treat that as a time-sensitive listing, not a universal quote: prices can change, taxes vary, and plan availability can differ by location and billing provider. Confirm the amount and channel list at checkout.
How many people and devices can use one account?
Account sharing and simultaneous viewing are separate limits. A YouTube TV family group can contain the manager and up to five additional household members, for up to six accounts under one subscription. Each member keeps an individual Library and watch history.
The main-plan overview separately lists up to three devices watching at the same time. Six household profiles therefore do not mean six concurrent streams. If a fourth device tries to play at once, someone may need to stop another stream or wait.

Which devices support YouTube TV, and is a streaming device required?
YouTube TV is designed for supported smart TVs and streaming devices, as well as phones, tablets, and computers. Compatibility is model- and software-specific, so check the current device list before buying hardware.
Basic television setup
- Confirm that your TV model or streaming device is supported by the current YouTube TV app.
- Open the device’s app store and install the YouTube TV application.
- Launch the app and sign in with the Google account used for the subscription.
- Open Live, Home, or Library to begin watching, browse recommendations, or manage recordings.
YouTube’s setup guidance uses Chromecast with Google TV as an example of a streaming device on which the app can be installed. A separate device is optional when your existing television already supports the app; it becomes useful only when the TV lacks a supported application or no longer receives compatible software.
How should I choose between live, DVR, and on-demand viewing?
Choose based on how precisely you need to control timing and commercials.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Choose Live for news, awards, sports, or any event where seeing it as it airs matters.
- Choose DVR when you want to start later, resume across devices, or fast-forward through recorded ad breaks. Add the program to the Library before relying on a recording.
- Choose on demand when you want an episode or movie immediately and accept the network’s advertising and availability rules.
For a subscription decision, first list the specific national networks and local stations you need, then check your ZIP code’s lineup. Next compare the package price, tax, any sports or entertainment add-on, and the number of simultaneous viewers your household requires. Finally, verify that every television you plan to use supports the app or budget for a compatible streaming device.

The local station is different from the one at home
Confirm that the device is reporting its current location and that you are still within the United States. Travel can change the local stations displayed; this is expected behavior rather than evidence that the national plan changed.

A program is missing from the Library
Check whether you added the title before the airing and whether the event was eligible for recording. A recording can also disappear after its expiration date. If the network offers an on-demand copy, search for that separately.
Fast-forward is unavailable
Identify whether you opened a live stream or an on-demand episode. Live commercials cannot be skipped, and on-demand advertising typically cannot be skipped; fast-forward is generally associated with the DVR recording.

The television cannot install the app
Check the current compatibility list for the exact model and operating system. If the TV is unsupported, use YouTube TV on a phone, tablet, or computer, or connect a supported streaming device such as the Chromecast with Google TV example in the setup guidance.
A fourth person cannot start a stream
Review active playback on the account. The family group can include up to six household members, but the main plan’s simultaneous-device allowance is up to three.
What should you verify before subscribing?
- Enter your home ZIP code and confirm the local CBS, FOX, NBC, or other stations you expect.
- Compare the exact package and any sports or entertainment option rather than assuming every plan includes the same networks.
- Check the current checkout price, taxes, and billing-provider terms because the listed monthly amount can change.
- Confirm that your TV model is supported or plan to watch on another supported device.
- Decide whether your household needs more than three simultaneous devices.
- Remember that adding a show to the Library creates cloud recordings subject to expiration; it is not permanent archival storage.
Frequently Asked Questions
What happens when a YouTube TV DVR recording expires?
The cloud recording is removed from its available playback window, so it is no longer a dependable copy in your Library. The same program may still be watchable if the network separately lists an on-demand version, but that version follows its own availability and advertising rules.
Can local channels change while I am traveling?
Yes. During travel within the United States, YouTube TV can use your device location to show the local stations serving the place you are visiting. Your home ZIP code still identifies the subscription’s home area, so the local lineup you see on the road may not match the one at home.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why does the same episode have different commercial controls?
You may be opening different sources: a live feed, a cloud recording, or a network on-demand copy. DVR playback normally permits fast-forwarding through recorded ads, while live and on-demand versions generally do not.
Do I need to buy a streaming stick to use YouTube TV on a television?
No. A supported smart TV can run the app directly, and phones, tablets, and computers are also supported viewing devices. Hardware is only a workaround when the television itself cannot install or run a compatible app.
