Warden v3 adds heartbeat monitoring that can tell you whether a server is answering and, on Proxmox, whether its containers are reported as running or stopped. That closes an important gap in a homelab security setup, but it does not automatically prove that a Docker reverse proxy is serving traffic. In the incident described by Warden author Christian Anderson, an operating-system update stopped three containers, including the proxy in front of public sites; the NAS came back, while a photo site stayed unavailable for about 35 minutes. The practical answer is layered monitoring: use Warden for host and supported container status, then add an HTTP or application-level check for the proxy and the sites it serves.
What happened when the NAS came back but the websites did not?
Anderson describes an operating-system update on his NAS that ran docker stop during shutdown. Docker treated those stops as intentional. After the reboot, the containers did not come back despite using restart: unless-stopped, because that policy preserves an intentional stop. Three containers remained down, including the reverse proxy routing traffic to public services.

The host itself was available, and Warden’s earlier security functions had not told him that the machine was up while the service layer was not. Anderson says he discovered the outage after roughly 35 minutes of photo-site downtime. That duration belongs to one reported incident on October 11 (the source page does not show a year), not a typical or guaranteed outage window, and the root-cause account is the author’s description rather than an independently reproduced investigation.
The incident exposes the distinction Warden v3 is intended to address: “is the box up, and is the stuff on it actually running?” A server heartbeat answers the first half. A proxy check, container health check, or real request to a public site is needed for the second.

What does Warden v3 actually monitor?
In Anderson’s description, Warden checks servers and supported containers every five minutes and reports up, down, stopped, or unknown, along with uptime. On a Proxmox node, one SSH call can cover the node and all of its containers. His example covered two Proxmox nodes, nine containers, and two other servers in four SSH calls and about six seconds. Those figures are maintainer-reported measurements, not an independent benchmark.
| Layer | What a positive result means | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Host heartbeat | The monitored machine answered the check. | That a reverse proxy, database, or website is accepting requests. |
| Proxmox container heartbeat | Warden received container status through the Proxmox-based collection described for v3. | That every process inside the container is healthy or that the service is reachable from the internet. |
| Docker container status in the described article version | Nothing beyond the host being reachable; the article says individual Docker container health was not checked. | That a stopped Docker proxy will be identified as stopped. |
| HTTP or synthetic service check | A request reached the selected endpoint and produced the expected response. | Health of unrelated hosts, containers, or private dependencies. |
The current public README identifies the project as version 3.4 and describes heartbeat and sign-in collection for each box and for containers on a Proxmox node. Because the incident write-up discusses “v3” behavior and the README is newer, treat the exact coverage as version-specific rather than assuming every v3.x release behaves identically.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesHow do the heartbeat alerts work?
Anderson says three missed heartbeats produce one alert message, and a later recovery produces another. With a five-minute interval, three misses represent a detection window that can approach 15 minutes, plus connection and processing time; it is not an instant outage detector.
- A short uptime compared with the outage is flagged as a reboot, helping distinguish a restart from a network-only interruption.
- If an entire Proxmox node stops answering, its containers are marked unknown instead of each generating a separate down alert. This groups a likely parent failure and avoids a burst of duplicate notifications.
- Recovery is a separate event, so you can tell when the monitored object begins answering again.
These behaviors and timings are reported by Anderson. They should be validated against the release you deploy, especially if your response process depends on a particular delay or status label.
Why can the host be up while the reverse proxy is down?
A host check usually tests reachability of the operating system or its monitoring agent. It can succeed while the Docker daemon has no running proxy container, the proxy process has crashed, its configuration fails to load, or firewall and DNS changes prevent external traffic. A reverse proxy can also return errors while its container remains in a nominally running state.
That is why the described Warden version would have shown only “box is up” for the NAS incident. The article explicitly says it did not inspect individual Docker containers and that container heartbeats require Proxmox. The current README’s references to container vulnerability scanning and Proxmox heartbeat collection do not establish general Docker service-health verification.

For a public proxy, the strongest practical signal is a request that follows the same path as a user: resolve the hostname, connect over the expected port, complete TLS, and verify an expected status or response marker. A host heartbeat and that request answer different questions and should not be substituted for one another.
What should you monitor if the proxy fronts public sites?
Use separate checks for infrastructure, workload, and user-visible service. This prevents a green host from masking a red application.
- Monitor the host. Configure Warden’s heartbeat for the NAS, VM, or server that runs the proxy. Record the five-minute cadence and three-miss alert behavior for your incident runbook.
- Monitor the virtualization layer when applicable. If the workload runs in Proxmox, confirm that the installed Warden version collects the container status you need and that the node-to-container relationship is represented correctly.
- Probe the proxy endpoint. From a location that can reach the public service, request an inexpensive health URL or a stable page and validate the expected HTTP result. Include TLS and hostname routing when those are part of normal traffic.
- Probe a representative backend. A proxy can answer while one upstream site is broken. Check the most important public services individually, with a response assertion that avoids false positives from a generic error page.
- Define escalation. A host-down event, a container-stopped event, and an HTTP failure should have different owners and runbooks. Do not automatically restart or reconfigure production services until you understand the cause.
This layered design also helps explain failures: a host alert with no HTTP response points toward infrastructure; a green host with a failed HTTP check points toward the proxy, its container, DNS, certificates, or an upstream service.
Does Warden check individual Docker container health?
Not in the version described by Anderson’s incident write-up. That limitation is the central qualification for anyone hoping v3 will reliably detect a stopped Docker reverse proxy.

The article says container heartbeats require Proxmox. The later README describes Proxmox-related heartbeat collection and container-focused vulnerability scanning, but it does not, by itself, promise a general health check for every Docker workload. Before installation, inspect the release documentation and test the exact deployment: stop the proxy intentionally, leave the host reachable, and confirm which status and alert Warden emits. Then perform an HTTP probe to see whether your service monitor catches the user-visible failure.
What other security and inventory functions does Warden describe?
Heartbeat monitoring is one part of a broader self-hosted console. These functions may be useful context, but none should be read as proof that an application is serving traffic.

Sign-in visibility
Anderson describes showing the latest SSH or console login, origin, time, and failed attempts from the previous 24 hours. He discusses excluding Warden’s own key and labeling other automation keys so routine access is easier to recognize. In the version he described, pct exec and Proxmox web-console logins were not visible. The later README lists additional collection for still-open pct exec and lxc-attach sessions, so coverage depends on the version.
Package and image vulnerability matching
The article says Warden removed its scanner binary and reads package lists from each box, matching them against OSV.dev and ranking known-exploited issues first. The current README also describes matching package databases against OSV.dev and Alpine secdb, and reading packages from running container images. Those are project descriptions of the scanning method, not independent measurements of detection quality or completeness.

Anderson describes combining a LAN sweep, router leases, and Home Assistant data, learning typical lookups by devices, checking internet health every minute, and generating a network map. The README separately lists ARP discovery every 15 minutes and a daily port sweep. These schedules serve different jobs and should not be conflated: an internet-health check can show connectivity trouble without proving that a particular reverse proxy is healthy.
Reverse-proxy, SSO, and tunnel logs
The README lists detection of events in reverse-proxy, single-sign-on, and tunnel logs, along with LAN discovery, file-integrity monitoring, agent activity tracking, and optional Cloudflare functions. Log detection can reveal suspicious or unusual activity, but it is not the same as making a successful request through the proxy.
Is Warden allowed to change systems automatically?
The project presents Warden as detect-only by default. Proposed actions require approval rather than being applied automatically. That policy is useful after a restart-related outage: an alert can prompt an operator to inspect Docker’s stop state, logs, dependencies, and configuration before taking corrective action.
Do not assume that an alert will restart a failed proxy or repair a broken deployment. If you later authorize response actions, document the approval path and test failure modes so an intermittent network problem cannot trigger an unsafe change.

What does Warden require, and is it free?
Warden is presented as free, open-source software under the AGPL-3.0 license. Its README states a minimum of 1 vCPU and 512 MB of memory; that is a project requirement, not independent hardware testing. A low-power mini PC may fit that published minimum, but no particular device or compatibility result is established here.
Plan for more than the minimum if you enable multiple collectors, retain substantial history, or monitor many hosts. The meaningful operational costs are your always-on hardware, credentials and access paths for collection, storage, updates, and the separate service-level probes needed for public websites.
How should you compare Warden with other monitoring approaches?
Compare the question each system can answer, not just the number of features. Warden’s reported strengths are self-hosted collection and Proxmox-aware status; an external uptime service may test from outside your network; an orchestrator may know container state; an HTTP monitor can verify the response a visitor receives.
| Evaluation question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Does it check host, VM, container, and HTTP response separately? | Prevents a reachable host from hiding a failed proxy or backend. |
| What is the detection interval and alert threshold? | Determines the delay before someone can act and whether transient failures are noisy. |
| How are parent failures deduplicated? | One node outage should not create an unmanageable alert storm for every child. |
| Does it depend on Proxmox or another platform? | Platform-specific collection may not apply to Docker on a standalone host. |
| What credentials and data can it access? | Broader visibility increases both usefulness and the consequences of a compromise. |
| What happens after detection? | Detect-only systems wait for an approved human response; automated systems introduce change risk. |
| How much host resource and maintenance work is required? | Small servers still need upgrades, backups, log retention, and recovery plans. |
The available sources do not provide an independent feature-by-feature test or benchmark against other stacks. Treat Warden’s six-second, four-SSH-call example as a single maintainer report, not a promise for your hardware or network.
How can you validate your own deployment safely?
A controlled test is more reliable than assuming a label means what you expect. Use a maintenance window and an endpoint that can be restored quickly.
- Record the Warden version, README revision, host type, and whether the workload is on Proxmox.
- Confirm that the host heartbeat arrives at the documented interval and note the timestamp of each alert.
- Stop the reverse-proxy container without shutting down the host. Check whether Warden reports a container state, only a healthy host, or no change.
- Run the external HTTP probe and verify that it fails when the proxy is stopped.
- Restore the proxy and record both the service recovery and Warden’s recovery notification.
- Repeat with the entire Proxmox node unavailable, if that reflects your architecture, and confirm that child containers are grouped as unknown rather than producing duplicate alarms.
Keep the observed results with your runbook. Release changes can alter collection coverage, status names, and login visibility, so retest after significant upgrades.

What is the practical verdict on Warden v3?
Warden v3 is a useful answer to the specific blind spot exposed by Anderson’s NAS outage: a security console can watch whether servers answer and, with Proxmox, collect container status on those nodes. Its five-minute heartbeats, three-miss notification, recovery event, reboot hint, and parent-failure grouping provide a clearer infrastructure signal than a tool that only records security events.
It is not, on the evidence available, a guarantee that every stopped Docker reverse proxy will be detected or that a running container is serving valid traffic. The described version did not check individual Docker container health, and the current v3.4 README’s broader feature list does not change that distinction without a version-specific test. Pair Warden with HTTP and application checks, then choose response actions deliberately.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use Warden if my server is not running Proxmox?
The described heartbeat covers ordinary servers, while the article specifically ties container heartbeats to Proxmox. A standalone Docker host therefore should not be assumed to receive the same container-level status; verify the release documentation and test a stopped container.
Will Warden restart a reverse proxy after an update stops it?
No automatic repair is promised by the project description. Warden is presented as detect-only by default, with proposed actions awaiting approval, so recovery still requires an operator or a separately designed automation workflow.
Can an internet-health alert prove that my website is down?
No. An internet check can identify loss of connectivity from the monitoring location, while a site-specific HTTPS request tests DNS, TLS, proxy routing, and the selected backend. Use both when those failure modes matter.
Why might a Proxmox container show “unknown” instead of “down”?
When the entire node stops answering, Warden groups the child state as unknown to avoid a duplicate alert for every container. That label indicates the parent could not be assessed; it is not evidence that each container was independently inspected.
