Tune by AKG refers to AKG’s Personi-Fi 2.0 personalization system, which builds an ear-specific sound curve instead of applying one factory tuning to everyone. In the AKG Headphones app, you answer setup questions, listen for nine test tones in each ear (18 tones total), and signal the quietest level you can hear. The app uses those thresholds to calculate a profile that you can switch on and off while a familiar track is playing.
Personi-Fi 2.0 is documented for selected models, including the AKG N9 Hybrid and AKG N5 Hybrid. The N9 Hybrid combines that calibration with adaptive noise cancelling, spatial audio, voice controls, wired listening and a USB-C wireless dongle, making it the clearest current example of what “Tune by AKG” means in practice.

What is Tune by AKG?
Tune by AKG is best understood as personalized playback, not a separate headphone line. AKG’s current implementation is called Personi-Fi 2.0: software measures how easily you hear several frequencies and then creates a corrective sound curve for your headphones.
Two people can wear the same headphones and perceive bass, midrange and treble differently because of ear shape, fit, age, listening history and other factors. A fixed equalizer preset cannot account for all of that. Personi-Fi attempts to compensate by measuring each ear independently and applying its own profile.

The result is still consumer audio processing. It is not a hearing test, hearing-loss diagnosis or substitute for an audiologist. Its purpose is to make music and other content sound more balanced to the individual listener.
How does Personi-Fi 2.0 create a personalized profile?
The app combines a short questionnaire with an ear-by-ear listening test. AKG describes nine frequencies for each ear, 18 tones in total, and records the lowest level at which you can hear each tone.
- Open the AKG Headphones app. Pair a supported headphone or earbud model and start the Personi-Fi setup from the personalization controls.
- Answer the setup questions. These questions provide context before the acoustic measurement begins.
- Move somewhere quiet. Background noise can mask a test tone and make you report a threshold that is higher than your true listening threshold.
- Listen to the nine tones for one ear. Press the on-screen control when each tone becomes audible. The app records the lowest level you can detect for that frequency.
- Repeat for the other ear. The second ear receives its own nine-tone sequence; do not assume both ears will produce identical results.
- Let the app calculate the curve. Personi-Fi turns the 18 threshold measurements into a listening profile for that headphone.
- Compare the result. Play a familiar song and toggle Personi-Fi on and off. The comparison is more useful with music you know well than with an unfamiliar demo track.
Because the measurement is based on your responses, concentrate on each tone and avoid guessing. If you are unsure whether you heard one, wait for the next presentation or restart the test rather than pressing at random.
Is Personi-Fi 2.0 a medical hearing test?
No. It is a consumer calibration feature designed to adjust headphone playback. The tone sequence samples nine frequencies per ear, while a clinical hearing evaluation uses calibrated equipment, controlled procedures and a much broader assessment of hearing and ear health.
If you have ringing, sudden hearing changes, pain, dizziness or difficulty understanding speech, use a qualified hearing professional rather than relying on a Personi-Fi result. A profile that makes music more comfortable does not establish that your hearing is normal.
Which AKG headphones support Personi-Fi 2.0?
AKG’s support documentation specifically lists the AKG N9 Hybrid and AKG N5 Hybrid for Personi-Fi 2.0. Support is model-specific, so the presence of the AKG Headphones app alone does not guarantee that every AKG product can run the calibration.

The app listing names a wider set of compatible products for app controls, including N9 Hybrid, N5 Hybrid, N400NC, N200NC, N20, N400, N700NC, N700NC Wireless and Y600NC Wireless. That list concerns app compatibility and can change with software updates or regional support; it should not be read as a promise that every listed model offers Personi-Fi 2.0.
What does the AKG Headphones app control?
The app is the main control surface for supported AKG devices. Its listing describes controls for headphone settings, smart ambient features and noise cancelling, while the N9 Hybrid materials add personalization, spatial-audio and voice-related options.
Personalization and sound
Use the app to launch Personi-Fi, complete the tone test and switch the calculated profile on or off for an immediate comparison. The useful test is not whether the processed version sounds “more dramatic,” but whether voices, instruments and bass are easier for you to follow at a comfortable level.
Noise and ambient modes
On the N9 Hybrid, True Adaptive Noise Cancelling monitors changing environmental noise and adjusts cancellation. Ambient-sound controls let you hear more of your surroundings when you need awareness, such as while waiting for an announcement.

Voice Aware controls how much of your own voice is fed back to you during calls or conversations. Smart Talk pauses audio when the wearer starts speaking. AKG notes that Smart Talk is unavailable when the N9 Hybrid is using a 2.4 GHz connection, so its behavior depends on the connection mode.
What features does the AKG N9 Hybrid add?
The N9 Hybrid is the current over-ear anchor for AKG’s personalized-audio story. It is not only a calibration-capable headphone: it also combines several listening and connectivity modes in one device.

These features matter because personalization is only one part of daily listening. A carefully measured profile will not help much if you need to hear traffic, take calls in a noisy office or connect to a source that works better with a cable.
How do the N9 Hybrid’s connection and battery claims compare?
AKG publishes different endurance figures for Bluetooth and the USB-C dongle. Both figures are manufacturer claims measured with ANC turned off, not independent laboratory results.

If you require the longest possible runtime, treat the figures as best-case reference points rather than a guarantee. Turning on ANC, using spatial audio, making calls and listening loudly can all reduce the time between charges.
How should you decide whether personalized audio is useful?
Personi-Fi is most useful when you can hear a consistent difference between its profile and the unprocessed sound and prefer that difference over several types of content. It is less compelling if you already use a carefully adjusted equalizer and do not notice an improvement.
Choose personalization when
- You want an ear-specific adjustment without manually moving several equalizer sliders.
- You notice that some recordings sound too dull, sharp or uneven even after changing the volume.
- You share neither your headphones nor your listening profile and can calibrate them for your own use.
- You want one profile that can be compared instantly with the original tuning.
Stay with manual EQ or the standard tuning when
- You need a mix that is deliberately colored for a genre, instrument or production task.
- Your listening environment is too noisy to complete a reliable tone test.
- You switch frequently between users and do not want to repeat calibration.
- You are looking for medical information about hearing rather than a playback adjustment.
Personi-Fi does not replace artistic mastering choices. It changes how the finished recording reaches your ears, so a profile that helps one album may make another feel brighter or softer. Use the on/off comparison and several familiar recordings before deciding.
What are the main limitations and failure modes?
Most disappointing results come from setup conditions or expectations, not from a missing “best” preset. Check these points before assuming the system has failed.

Noise during the test
Air conditioners, traffic, conversation and keyboard noise can hide quiet tones. Repeat the calibration in the quietest practical room and keep the headphone seal or earbud fit consistent while testing.
Inconsistent fit
An over-ear cup that shifts or an earbud that sits differently between measurements changes the sound reaching your ear. Put the N9 Hybrid on in its normal position, or seat the N5 Hybrid securely, before starting and avoid touching it during the sequence.
Over-reporting faint tones
Pressing before you are certain a tone is audible tells the algorithm that you hear that frequency more easily than you do. Concentrate, use a quiet room and restart if you were guessing repeatedly.
Expecting a clinical answer
A personalized curve can make listening more comfortable, but it cannot explain tinnitus, diagnose hearing loss or identify an ear condition. Use clinical care for those questions.

The app supports a broader group of AKG products than the two models explicitly named in the Personi-Fi support documentation. Confirm the exact model and current regional software support before purchase.

AKG has explored automatic headphone calibration for years. In a January 6, 2015 HARMAN announcement, the company described the AKG N90Q and its TruNote system, which used microphones in each ear cup to measure frequency response and generate a correction filter.

That announcement quoted Quincy Jones: “There are only 12 notes, and no matter what genre of music you are enjoying, whether it be Jazz, R&B, Pop, Rock or Classical, I believe the enhanced experience provided by the N90Q will offer the listener such exact sound and customization that you will believe you are in a professional recording studio.”
TruNote and Personi-Fi 2.0 are different generations and should not be treated as the same implementation. The shared idea is automatic correction; Personi-Fi 2.0, as currently documented, asks questions and measures audibility thresholds with nine tones per ear through the app.
