Write inclusive image prompts by making consequential choices explicit: who is present, their relevant identities and ages, body diversity, disability or assistive technology, cultural and historical context, role, action, mood, and visual style. Add respectful constraints such as avoiding caricature, tokenism, sexualization, exoticization, and stereotypical occupational cues. Then treat every generated image as a draft: inspect who is represented or missing, verify cultural and historical details, and regenerate after correcting problems. Specific wording gives you more control, but it cannot guarantee fairness because models can reproduce bias from training data, filtering, and prompt interpretation.
What makes an AI image prompt inclusive?
An inclusive prompt does more than ask for “diverse people.” It states the representation that matters for the scene and gives it enough context to be portrayed as part of the subject’s real life rather than as a visual token. The prompt should connect identity to the person’s role, setting, clothing, action, and mood instead of treating identity as decoration.

For example, “a diverse team” leaves race, age, gender presentation, body shape, disability, and cultural setting to the model’s defaults. A useful prompt might instead describe a project team with named age ranges, varied skin tones and body types, one member using a wheelchair, a specific workplace, and an ordinary collaborative task. Include only attributes that are relevant to the image’s purpose; unnecessary demographic detail can feel intrusive or distort the scene.
- Specific: identify the people, context, and visual decisions that affect accuracy.
- Respectful: describe people as whole participants, not symbols or stereotypes.
- Contextual: state the time, place, culture, and social situation when they affect meaning.
- Accessible: use plain language and a structure that is easy to edit.
- Reviewable: leave room for checking the result and revising it.
OpenAI’s DALL·E team reported in 2022 that users were 12 times more likely to say generated images included people from diverse backgrounds after a system-level technique was applied to underspecified person prompts. That result describes a particular mitigation and user perception, not a guarantee that any prompt or model will be unbiased.

Why do image generators keep defaulting to the same kinds of people?
When a prompt does not settle an important representation choice, the model predicts one from its training patterns, safety filters, and prompt framing. Those patterns can over-represent some groups and erase or stereotype others. Microsoft and Canadian government guidance both caution that model behavior can reproduce bias even when a user has inclusive intentions.
A request such as “a doctor” may therefore produce a narrow visual default, while “a doctor” with a specified setting, age range, skin tone, gender presentation, body type, or assistive device gives the system fewer opportunities to fill in those choices itself. Explicit wording is a control mechanism, not a correction for every underlying dataset or filtering problem.

For a historically specific image, identify the population and period details that are accurate for that place and time. OpenAI’s safety guidance distinguishes attributes a user requests from demographic changes introduced unintentionally by a system; your prompt should make the intended attributes clear.
How do I build an inclusive prompt step by step?
Draft the prompt in a fixed order so that identity, context, image direction, and safeguards do not get lost in a long paragraph. Edit the fields that matter for your scene and remove details that do not.
- Define the purpose and audience. Decide whether the image is for a classroom, product interface, editorial illustration, campaign, or another use. The purpose determines what must be accurate and what could be distracting or sensitive.
- Name the subject and activity. Start with the people or group and what they are doing: “three engineers reviewing a solar-panel design” is more controllable than “people at work.”
- Specify relevant identities. Add age range, gender presentation, race or ethnicity, skin tone, body type, disability, or assistive device when those details are important to representation. Use ordinary descriptive language rather than labels meant to provoke a reaction.
- Set cultural, historical, and geographic context. State the country or community, time period, architecture, objects, clothing, language on signs, and social setting that should be accurate. If the scene is contemporary, say so; if it is historical, request period-appropriate details.
- Describe agency and relationships. Give each person a role, action, expression, and relationship to the scene. This prevents a person from being reduced to a background prop or a disability marker.
- Add visual direction. Specify medium, composition, camera distance, lighting, color, mood, and level of realism. These choices help the model preserve identity details without turning the image into a stereotype.
- Add respectful exclusions. Where relevant, request no caricature, tokenism, sexualization, exoticization, or stereotypical occupational cues. Keep exclusions tied to a foreseeable risk rather than listing every imaginable negative.
- State must-preserve details. Identify cultural artifacts, historical facts, clothing, mobility equipment, or text that should not be altered. Ask for legible text only when the generator can reasonably produce it; otherwise add typography later in an editor.
- Generate, inspect, and revise. Treat the first output as a draft. Record the specific problem—missing identity, changed device, inaccurate clothing, or stereotyped expression—and change the prompt or regenerate with a different seed or reference workflow if available.
Which details should I include about people?
Race, ethnicity, and skin tone
Name a race or ethnicity when it is relevant to the story, audience, historical accuracy, or a person’s self-described identity. A skin-tone description can improve visual control, but it should not replace cultural context. Avoid treating an ethnic group as a costume, visual effect, or shorthand for a personality trait.
For a group scene, describe distribution and roles naturally: “four colleagues with varied brown, olive, and light skin tones, sharing the presentation” gives the model both appearance and agency. Do not imply that every member of a community looks the same.

Gender, gender expression, and sexuality
Specify gender or presentation when it affects the image, and describe clothing, posture, or styling without assuming that those traits determine identity. If a subject is transgender or nonbinary and that fact matters, state it respectfully and focus on the person’s role rather than making transition or anatomy the visual subject unless the assignment requires it.
Age and body diversity
Use an age range or life stage—such as “a woman in her late 60s” or “two teenagers and one adult mentor”—instead of vague words like “old.” Include different heights, body shapes, and mobility levels when they are part of the intended group. Make sure older or larger-bodied people are shown performing ordinary, competent activities rather than being used only for comic or cautionary framing.
Disability and assistive devices
Name the disability or device only when it is relevant, and describe how it appears in the scene: “a software designer who uses a power wheelchair, positioned at the shared table with clear space for the chair.” Include the person’s action and agency so the device is not the entire narrative.
Adobe’s 2023 accessibility announcement refers to a global disability community of more than one billion people. That figure is context about the size of the community, not a performance score for an image generator. In a review, check whether equipment is anatomically and mechanically plausible, whether the environment is accessible, and whether the person is portrayed with dignity.

Culture, religion, and language
Give the specific community, region, occasion, and time period when cultural or religious details matter. Describe garments, objects, food, architecture, and written language as they are used in that context, rather than asking for “exotic” or “tribal” styling. If a sacred object or ceremony appears, state the respectful setting and avoid turning it into a decorative prop.
How should I describe historical or culturally specific scenes?
Accuracy comes before an abstract idea of visual variety. State the date or period, location, population, social roles, materials, and clothing that belong in the scene. Ask the model to preserve those details and to avoid modern objects, anachronistic hairstyles, or symbols that did not exist in the setting.

If the historical record is contested or incomplete, do not present a guess as certainty. You can ask for a clearly labeled interpretation, documentary-style framing, or a composition that avoids inventing identifiable details. A present-day image can intentionally include a broad range of people; a reconstruction of a specific event should follow the event’s documented context.
What wording helps avoid stereotypes?
Use affirmative descriptions of people’s roles and choices, then add a short safeguard for risks that are plausible in the scene. The table below shows how to replace vague or loaded wording.
| Risky or vague wording | More useful wording | Why it helps |
|---|---|---|
| “Exotic woman in traditional clothes” | “A Moroccan architect in a contemporary riad courtyard, wearing a documented regional garment appropriate to the occasion; natural expression, no exoticization” | Names a person, place, profession, and context instead of treating culture as spectacle. |
| “Disabled person inspirationally overcoming obstacles” | “A wheelchair user leading a transit-planning meeting in an accessible office, focused on the map and speaking with colleagues” | Shows agency and an ordinary task without reducing disability to an emotional trope. |
| “Diverse nurses” | “Five nurses of varied ages, skin tones, body types, and gender presentations preparing a shift handoff; each has a distinct role” | Connects diversity to a believable group and shared work. |
| “Ancient people from everywhere” | “A historically grounded marketplace in Alexandria in the third century BCE, with period-appropriate architecture, garments, goods, and populations documented for that location” | Prevents a generic mixture from replacing historical specificity. |
Do not rely on a negative list alone. “No stereotypes” cannot tell a model what a respectful person should be doing, wearing, or feeling; pair the exclusion with positive, contextual direction.
What is a reusable inclusive prompt pattern?
Use this pattern as a starting point, then replace each bracketed field with information appropriate to the assignment:
Create a [medium/style] image of [specific subject] in [specific setting and cultural or historical context]. Depict [relevant identities, ages, body types, abilities, and assistive devices] accurately and respectfully. Show [action, relationships, composition, lighting, and mood]. Preserve [historical, cultural, or accessibility details]. Avoid caricature, tokenism, sexualization, exoticization, and stereotypical occupational cues. Keep the portrayal dignified, natural, and consistent with the stated time and place.
Example: a workplace illustration
Create a warm editorial illustration of a five-person civic-design team reviewing a neighborhood map in an accessible studio. Include adults in their 20s through 60s with varied skin tones, body shapes, and gender presentations; one colleague uses a manual wheelchair and another has a visible hearing aid. Give everyone an active role in the discussion, with clear sightlines and an uncluttered table. Use natural window light, realistic proportions, and a calm collaborative mood. Avoid tokenism, caricature, pity-based framing, and stereotypical job cues.
Example: a culturally specific portrait
Create a documentary-style portrait of a Sikh woman in her 40s teaching a cooking class in Birmingham, England, in the present day. Show her turban and clothing accurately and respectfully, with students of different ages participating in the lesson. Use an eye-level composition, soft classroom lighting, and a welcoming but unsentimental expression. Avoid exoticization, tokenism, and turning religious clothing into a costume.
Example: a historical scene
Create a historically grounded oil-painting-style scene of a public market in Alexandria in the third century BCE. Use period-appropriate architecture, tools, textiles, goods, and populations for that location and date; show vendors and customers of different ages engaged in ordinary commerce. Preserve the stated historical setting and avoid modern objects, anachronistic clothing, caricature, or invented symbols presented as authentic.
How do I audit an image after it is generated?
Review the picture as a person from the depicted community might see it, not only as the person who wrote the prompt. Adobe recommends adversarial testing and analysis from multiple human perspectives; Microsoft likewise warns that systems can over-represent or under-represent groups.
- Representation: Which people and communities appear? Who is missing, blurred, or pushed into the background?
- Agency: Does each person have a believable action, role, and expression, or is someone present only as a token?
- Accuracy: Are disability equipment, clothing, skin tones, body proportions, language, architecture, and cultural objects plausible?
- Context: Does the image fit its stated time and place, or has the model introduced a modern or foreign detail?
- Framing: Does camera angle, lighting, or pose sexualize, infantilize, exoticize, or stigmatize anyone?
- Defaults: Did the model erase an identity you requested or substitute a familiar demographic pattern?
- Recognition: Would a person from the depicted community likely recognize the portrayal as respectful and specific?
After identifying a problem, change one or two variables at a time. Make the missing identity or context explicit, replace loaded adjectives with observable details, and restate the must-preserve feature. Keep versions of prompts and outputs so you can tell whether an edit fixed the problem or merely changed the composition.

How can I make prompts easier to understand and edit?
Microsoft’s inclusive-design guidance recommends simple prompt suggestions, avoidance of unnecessary specialized terms, reduced cognitive load, and support for multiple input and output modes. You can apply that advice even when writing manually:
- Put the subject and setting first, followed by identity details, action, style, and safeguards.
- Use short, concrete phrases such as “uses a white cane” or “wears a hearing aid” instead of abstract language.
- Keep one idea per clause and remove synonyms that could make the instruction ambiguous.
- Save reusable templates with labeled fields so a team can edit identity and context without rewriting the whole prompt.
- When a tool supports it, provide reference images or alternate input modes only with permission and appropriate rights.
Microsoft’s Responsible AI principles frame inclusion as designing systems that empower people regardless of background and ask, “How might a system be designed to be inclusive for people of all abilities?” A clear prompt is one practical part of that broader design question; it does not transfer responsibility from the creator to the model.
How should I compare image generators for inclusive work?
No single feature proves that a generator is inclusive. Compare the workflow you will actually use, and test the same prompt set across tools before selecting one for a project.
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Evidence to record |
|---|---|---|
| Demographic control | Can you specify identity, age, body type, and disability without the system silently changing them? | Outputs from matched prompts and notes on omissions or substitutions. |
| Cultural and historical fidelity | Does the tool preserve period details, garments, architecture, language, and community context? | Image review by a knowledgeable person, especially for sensitive scenes. |
| Prompt accessibility | Are instructions easy to edit? Does the interface reduce jargon and support different input or output modes? | Time needed for a new user to create and revise a structured prompt. |
| Safety and stereotype mitigation | How does the system respond to harmful requests, and does it introduce unwanted demographic changes while filtering? | Documented behavior on benign, ambiguous, and adversarial test prompts. |
| Review and iteration tools | Can you preserve versions, vary a seed, use references, or make targeted edits? | Whether a known representation error can be corrected without starting over. |
Human review remains necessary even when a provider describes a mitigation. Adobe’s guidance emphasizes adversarial testing and human-perspective analysis, while Microsoft’s transparency guidance notes that representation can still be uneven.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat are the limits of inclusive prompting?
Prompt wording cannot rewrite a model’s training data or guarantee that a generated image is fair. Bias can enter through data, filtering, model defaults, and the way the prompt is interpreted. A detailed description may also create new errors if it combines cultural symbols incorrectly or asks for a device the model does not render reliably.
Use the least demographic detail needed for the purpose, obtain consent when depicting identifiable people, and do not present an AI-generated reconstruction as documentary evidence. For public-facing work, keep a human approval step and record why sensitive identity or historical details were included.
Best Value
What should I remember when writing the final prompt?
- State consequential representation choices instead of delegating them to defaults.
- Give identity, disability, and cultural details a real role in the scene.
- Use plain, observable language and avoid loaded or exoticizing labels.
- Match diversity requests to the actual historical and social context.
- Add targeted safeguards, then inspect every output for omission, stereotype, and inaccuracy.
- Regenerate and seek human perspectives; inclusive wording improves control but cannot promise a bias-free result.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask an image generator to show a specific race or ethnicity?
Yes, when the identity is relevant to the subject, audience, or context. Describe the person’s role and setting as well as appearance, and avoid implying that an entire community shares one look or personality.
How do I prompt for a wheelchair user without making disability the whole story?
Name the wheelchair or other device accurately, place the person in an accessible environment, and give them a concrete action or role. Review the result for impossible equipment, inaccessible surroundings, pity-based expressions, or framing that isolates the person.
Recommended Free Tools
Should every group image contain the same mix of demographics?
No. Representation should fit the intended audience, location, period, and story rather than follow a fixed quota. Explain the relevant population and social context so the image is neither exclusionary by default nor historically misleading.
Why does adding “no stereotypes” sometimes fail?
A prohibition does not tell the model what positive details to generate. Pair it with specific roles, actions, clothing, relationships, and contextual facts, then inspect the output and revise the exact element that went wrong.
Is a generated image safe to publish if the prompt was inclusive?
Not automatically. Check factual, cultural, accessibility, and dignity concerns; obtain appropriate consent and rights for identifiable references; and have a knowledgeable human approve sensitive or historical imagery before publication.
