To judge whether an unfamiliar PC game is worth buying, read its AI disclosure, compare its promotional art with gameplay screenshots and footage, inspect recent detailed reviews, try a demo if available, and check the seller’s refund terms. These checks can reveal whether the advertised game matches what buyers are likely to get; they cannot prove that an image was or was not made with AI. AI use and shovelware are different questions: the disclosure describes a production method, while the purchase decision should turn on evidence of the game’s features, quality, and value.

What can you actually learn from a game’s AI disclosure?

On Steam, the developer’s Content Survey asks about AI-generated material shipped in the game and consumed by players, such as art, sound, narrative, or localization. It is not a general declaration of every way a developer used AI during production. Valve says that “Efficiency gains through the use of these tools is not the focus of this section.” In other words, using an AI tool to speed up an internal workflow is not the same as shipping AI-generated content for players to see or hear.

The survey distinguishes two kinds of shipped content:

  • Pre-generated content is created during development and included in the finished game. That could include an illustration, a line of dialogue, music, or a translation.
  • Live-generated content is created while the game is running. Valve’s survey asks developers to describe the guardrails they use for this kind of generation in addition to disclosing it.

Read the description, not just the presence of an AI label. A useful disclosure tells you what kinds of content were generated and whether generation happens before release or during play. For example, the Steam listing for EULA ~2026 Human Creativity Report~ separates AI-made character graphics, script, and audio from human-made content and states that it uses no real-time generation. That is an example of disclosure detail, not a recommendation or judgment of the game. Valve’s Content Survey documentation and its explanation of the AI content disclosure explain the scope.

A disclosure is the developer’s description within the survey’s scope, not a public, independently verified inventory of every asset. An empty or missing disclosure does not prove that no AI-generated material is present. Nor is the listing alone enough to accuse a named developer of violating a rule. Treat the disclosure as one piece of information to weigh alongside the game itself.

How can you assess a game in five minutes?

Use this quick sequence on a Steam listing. It is a way to assess the evidence for a purchase, not a method for certifying asset provenance or detecting shovelware with certainty.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Read the AI disclosure. Note which content types are identified, and whether they were created before release or can be generated during play. A broad statement gives you less detail than a specific one, but specificity alone does not establish quality.
  2. Inspect several screenshots. Look for gameplay, active scenes, player interaction, and any interface elements that help you understand what playing the game involves. Do not make the capsule image or a single promotional illustration stand in for the game.
  3. Watch the trailer for actual play. Check whether it shows player-perspective footage, meaningful actions, and the features named on the listing. Cinematic footage can be useful for tone, but a cinematic-only trailer provides less evidence about how the game works.
  4. Compare claims with evidence. If a listing promises exploration, combat, crafting, branching dialogue, or multiplayer, ask whether screenshots or footage visibly demonstrate those features. A feature list is a claim; footage is evidence, though still only a sample.
  5. Read recent and critical reviews. Look for specific descriptions of controls, bugs, progression, content, and whether the advertised experience appears in play. Compare newer comments with older ones to see whether complaints persist or reflect an earlier state.
  6. Try a demo if there is one. A demo can answer practical questions about controls, performance on your system, tone, and whether the core loop interests you. It cannot certify the entire release.
  7. Check refund terms before paying. Confirm the policy for the store and purchase method you will use. A refund option can limit financial risk, but it is not a replacement for checking what the game offers.

Steam asks developers to use store screenshots that show gameplay rather than concept art or prerendered stills. Its graphical-asset guidance says, “Screenshots should exclusively show the gameplay of your game.” It also recommends trailers that show play from the player’s perspective, ideally with the interface visible. Those rules make screenshots and footage useful things to inspect, but they do not make every listing a guarantee of the eventual experience. Steam reviews the initial store presence; the game can be updated after approval. See Valve’s store graphical-asset guidance for the distinction.

What should you look for in screenshots and trailers?

Ask whether the media helps you picture the game being played. Useful evidence includes a character moving through a level, an in-game menu or interface, a player making a choice, an enemy encounter, or a clearly shown multiplayer session. The precise evidence depends on the genre: a strategy game may need to show its map and decision-making interface, while a visual novel may need to show dialogue and choices.

Compare the media with one another. Do screenshots look like frames from the trailer? Does the trailer show the same style, characters, and environments as the listing art? Does the footage support the game’s key feature claims? Differences are not automatically suspicious—promotional art can be composed differently, and a trailer may present edited highlights—but gaps leave questions unanswered. A trailer made entirely of mood-setting scenes tells you less about controls and systems than one that shows the player interacting with the game.

Be careful not to turn visual oddities into proof. An unusual hand, repeated-looking texture, inconsistent lettering, generic art, or abrupt change in style may be a reason to examine the listing more closely. None establishes that an image was generated by AI, that the developer cut corners, or that the gameplay is poor. A polished image can also be disconnected from the actual experience. Provenance cannot reliably be decided from one visual clue; the purchase question is better answered by cross-checking what the game shows and what players describe.

When a listing offers little gameplay footage, record that as uncertainty rather than a verdict. A small studio, an inexpensive price, or an unfamiliar art style is not proof of low effort. The practical question is whether the available evidence is enough for you to accept the risk at the listed price and under the seller’s return terms.

How should you read Steam reviews instead of relying on a score?

Steam shows both recent and lifetime review scores. The score can orient you, but the reviews’ details and timing matter more when you are deciding what to expect now. A high percentage does not tell you whether a particular complaint matters to you, and a low percentage does not explain whether the problem is current or relevant to the features you care about.

Start with reviews that identify a concrete experience: a control problem, a broken feature, a short campaign, a progression bottleneck, a crash, or a mismatch between the advertised and delivered game. Then look at when the review was written. If older reviews describe severe launch problems but newer reviews report fixes, that history is different from a problem repeated in recent comments. Conversely, positive early impressions do not establish that the current version has remained stable or that promised content arrived.

Read a mix: recent reviews, critical reviews, and positive reviews with enough detail to understand what players value. Compare their specific observations, not just the number of reviews or the percentage. Ask whether people are discussing the same version and whether their priorities match yours. A player who dislikes a genre may still provide useful factual detail, but their verdict may not predict your enjoyment.

Steam documents labels for certain free and prerelease review circumstances and prohibits review manipulation. Those policies are useful context, not a guarantee that every individual review is accurate, representative, or free of bias. Look for recurring, specific reports rather than treating any single comment as proof. Steam’s review documentation describes its review system and related labels.

Does AI use mean a game is shovelware?

No. AI disclosure answers a question about production method; it does not tell you on its own whether a game is complete, enjoyable, supported, or worth its price. A game can use AI-assisted assets and still deliver coherent gameplay. A game with no visible AI disclosure can still be unfinished, repetitive, misleadingly presented, or simply a poor fit for you.

For a buying decision, define shovelware by the experience and evidence you can assess—not by the suspected origin of one image. Useful warning signs are mismatches between advertised features and observable play, repeated recent complaints about missing or broken content, or a demo that does not support the listing’s central claims. Even then, distinguish a concrete problem from an aesthetic preference. “The art looks generic” is not the same claim as “the advertised multiplayer mode is unavailable,” and neither should be presented as proof of AI use.

If you are comparing games, use the same checks for each one: disclosure specificity; pre-generated versus live-generated use; the amount of observable gameplay; whether footage, screenshots, and feature descriptions agree; how specific and recent player reports are; whether a demo exists; and how much purchase risk remains after checking the refund terms. These axes help you compare evidence without inventing a quality score or treating AI use as a proxy for quality.

Can a demo or refund policy remove the risk?

A demo is often the strongest pre-purchase check because it lets you interact with part of the game rather than relying only on the developer’s presentation. Try to reach the activity that defines the game: move and fight if combat is central, test a representative puzzle, or spend time with the dialogue and choices in a narrative game. Notice whether the controls feel usable, whether the core loop is understandable, and whether the demo supports the listing’s main promise.

A demo remains a sample. It may cover only an early section, omit later systems, or differ from the full release. A good demo is evidence about the portion you played, not a guarantee about all content, technical performance throughout the game, future updates, or long-term support. Steam explains how its demo applications work.

For games bought on Steam, Valve’s standard refund offer is a request made within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours played, subject to the policy. Valve may consider a request outside those conditions, but that is not a promise of approval. Check the current Steam refund policy before buying, especially if you expect to spend time troubleshooting or evaluating a game.

Do not assume Steam’s policy covers purchases made elsewhere. A third-party key or another storefront has its own seller and terms, and Steam cannot refund a purchase that was not made through Steam. Before checkout, identify who is actually selling the game, what their return window is, and any conditions that affect eligibility. If the terms are unclear, treat the purchase as higher risk rather than assuming a refund will be available.

How common are AI disclosures on Steam?

One dated snapshot offers context, but it should not be mistaken for a count of AI-made games. Flockbay reported that 35.04% of 4,766 sampled Steam releases from January through August 2026 carried an AI disclosure; 26.29% of that same sample named visual assets. The report says its broader study examined 16,968 sampled store pages from a release population of 62,612 since July 2023, with figures current as of August 26, 2026. Those are sample-based counts of disclosures, not an independently verified census of games using AI, and certainly not a measure of shovelware. See the Flockbay report for its scope and methodology.

The numbers do not tell you whether any particular title is good or bad. They do underline why a disclosure should be read as information about declared content rather than as a quality label. For an individual purchase, the listing, actual gameplay evidence, relevant player reports, demo, and seller terms are more useful than a market-wide percentage.

What changes outside Steam?

This workflow is Steam-centered because Steam provides a developer Content Survey, store review information, demos, and a documented refund policy. The available information does not establish equivalent disclosure labels, review displays, demo practices, or return rules across every PC storefront. On another store, check that seller’s own listing, review system, demo availability, and refund terms rather than assuming Steam’s labels or protections apply.

Even on Steam, recheck a specific game’s current disclosure, reviews, demo availability, and refund terms close to purchase. Store pages and games can change, and a disclosed production method is not a permanent quality guarantee. The most reliable conclusion is limited: decide whether the evidence available for this listing is sufficient for the purchase you are considering.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an AI image detector tell me whether a game’s artwork was generated?

A detector result should not be treated as proof of an asset’s provenance; this workflow does not establish reliable accuracy for consumer AI-detection tools. For a purchase decision, prioritize the developer’s disclosure and evidence about the playable experience rather than trying to authenticate a single image from appearance alone.

Does Steam independently verify every AI asset a developer lists?

The Steam Content Survey is a developer description within Valve’s stated survey scope, not a public independent inventory of every asset. It can help you understand what the developer says was shipped, but it cannot settle every provenance question about an individual file.

Should I wait for a game’s full release if its store page is still changing?

If major features or content are still uncertain, waiting can give you access to more recent player reports and a clearer picture of what shipped. That trade-off is personal: an early purchase may suit someone comfortable with uncertainty, while a buyer who needs a complete feature set may prefer to wait.

What should I save before contacting a seller about a mismatch?

Keep the order confirmation, a copy or screenshot of the relevant store description, and concise notes identifying the feature or condition that differs from what was advertised. Contact the seller through the purchase platform’s official support route and follow that platform’s stated deadline and documentation requirements.
