Don’t treat a viral post as proof. To check whether a video or screenshot is real, identify its earliest source, reverse-search the image or several video frames, test the claimed time and place against independent evidence, and inspect the original file or its credentials when available. Then report only what those checks establish. A genuine image can be paired with a false caption, and visual or AI clues alone cannot settle authenticity.
What does it mean for a viral video or screenshot to be real?
“Real” can mean several different things: that the pixels have not been altered, that the recording depicts an actual event, that it was captured where and when the caption claims, or that the person who posted it is the original source. Those are separate questions. A clip may show a genuine event but be old, filmed elsewhere, edited down, or paired with a misleading voice-over.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallVerification is therefore a process of testing claims, not a single tool’s verdict. The strongest conclusion comes when independent checks converge: the source and upload history make sense, image or video searches reveal no conflicting earlier context, location and timing fit external evidence, and other independent sources corroborate the event. If one of those questions remains unresolved, say so rather than treating the whole post as confirmed.
What should you record before investigating?
Preserve the post as it appeared before it changes or disappears. Record the exact caption, account name, upload time, URL, visible watermark, and any stated event, date, or location. Keep a note of what the post actually claims; later reposts may alter the wording, and that difference can matter.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Separate observable facts from claims. “A bus is on fire” describes visible content; “this is today’s attack in City X” adds claims about time, event, and place.
- Assess the account cautiously. Is it plausibly an eyewitness? Does it have a relevant history or affiliation? An anonymous or pseudonymous account is harder to assess, as the House of Commons Library notes.
- Preserve the original post link and, if appropriate, a screenshot showing the caption and account. A screenshot documents what you saw; it does not independently prove the media’s authenticity.
Do not assume that a large following, a familiar watermark, or confident wording establishes credibility. These details help you trace a post and assess its context; they are not proof by themselves.
How do you find the original source or an earlier version?
Search for distinctive wording, usernames, watermarks, signs, or other details visible in the media. Compare the dates and captions of results. An earlier version can show that a clip existed before the event it is claimed to depict, or that a later caption changed its meaning.

- Search an exact, distinctive phrase from the caption, then try a short phrase without generic hashtags or commentary.
- Search the account name and visible watermark alongside a key phrase or event detail.
- Compare the earliest dated results you can find. Look for the same frames, not merely similar-looking footage.
- Read the earlier post’s caption and surrounding context. A first upload may identify a different event, location, or date.
- Record what you found and what remains uncertain. Search results can be incomplete, so failure to find an earlier copy does not prove that the current post is original.
The House of Commons Library recommends looking for the original source because it may contain context that verifies or falsifies the claim. Be alert to repost chains: many accounts repeating one post are not many independent witnesses.
How do you reverse-search a screenshot or still image?
Run the clearest available image through more than one reverse-image service, such as Google Images, Bing, or TinEye. Search more than one crop: a full frame gives context, while a distinctive sign, object, or watermark may be easier to match. The Internet Society explains that reverse search can surface earlier appearances and expose a real image reused with a false caption.

- Start with the uncropped image if you have it. A clean, high-resolution version gives the service more visual information to match.
- Try a second crop around a distinctive feature, such as a sign, building, vehicle, or watermark. Keep enough surrounding detail to make the match meaningful.
- Compare matching results by date and context. Check whether the result shows the same image, rather than a visually similar one.
- Open the likely earlier source and read its caption and date. A search-result thumbnail alone may not tell you what the image originally depicted.
- Repeat on another service. Indexes differ, and a missing match on one service is not evidence that no earlier copy exists.
Searching a face can raise privacy concerns and may produce misleading matches; use other distinctive details where possible. A reverse-image match establishes that an image appeared elsewhere, not automatically that the earlier caption is correct or that either post is authentic.
How do you check a video that image search cannot accept?
A standard reverse-image search does not search an entire video file. The practical workaround is to extract several representative still frames—ideally from the opening, middle, and closing portions—and search those separately. AFP’s guide describes using the InVID-WeVerify browser plugin to submit a URL or local file, generate keyframes, and launch reverse-image searches from selected frames.
- Use the clearest video URL or local file available. Note whether you are checking a repost or the original upload.
- Generate several keyframes, not just one. Include distinct scenes and moments before or after the most widely shared frame.
- Reverse-search frames individually. A distinctive background, sign, or object may match an earlier upload even when the headline frame does not.
- Compare each match with the video’s claimed date, place, and event. Check whether the frame came from an older clip or a different sequence.
- Inspect the video around a promising match. Determine whether the searched image is a continuous part of the clip or a frame copied into a compilation.
InVID’s documentation describes additional checks for near-duplicates, logos, metadata, contextual clues, and frame-level forensics. These capabilities can help organize an investigation, but tool output still needs interpretation. Cropping, recompression, overlays, and incomplete indexing can prevent a match.
How can you test the claimed time and location?
Compare the media’s details with independent evidence about the claimed place and time. AP’s published verification workflow includes reverse-image searching and geolocation, followed by checks of landmarks, signage, weather, and language against reporting. A real recording can still be miscaptioned if it shows a different event, country, or year.

- Landmarks and terrain: Compare visible buildings, road layouts, hills, coastlines, and other fixed features with maps, satellite imagery, or independently captured images.
- Signs and language: Check street signs, storefronts, road markings, and written language. Consider whether lettering and local conventions fit the claimed location.
- Weather and light: Compare visible weather and shadows with historical weather information and other reports from the claimed time. A mismatch is a reason to investigate, not an automatic disproof.
- Clothing and architecture: Look for details consistent with the place and period. Avoid treating a single style or object as conclusive; many features travel or persist over time.
- Independent media: Search for other photographs or videos of the same event from separate sources and angles. Check whether they show matching details, rather than copying the same original post.
Keep the claim narrow while checking it. Establishing that a street exists in a particular city is not the same as proving the video was recorded there on the day named in the caption. For timing, compare the earliest known appearance with the claimed event and look for independent records or reporting that anchor the date.
What visual signs of editing or AI should you inspect?
Review the sequence frame by frame for clues such as abrupt cuts, duplicated backgrounds, inconsistent reflections, impossible shadows, warped text, repeated faces, or unusual hands and teeth. Also check whether a crop removes context or a voice-over changes what the footage appears to show. These are prompts for more checking, not proof of fabrication.
The House of Commons Library cautions that generative systems are improving and visible mistakes may disappear. Conversely, compression, low resolution, motion blur, and ordinary editing can make genuine footage look odd. Don’t label a video fake based on one visual anomaly; compare it with the source, other versions, and independent evidence.
When a clip seems suspicious, inspect neighboring frames and the sequence as a whole. A detail that looks impossible in one compressed frame may become understandable in motion, while an edit may become clear only when you examine what occurs just before and after a cut.

What can metadata and Content Credentials tell you?
If you have the original file, inspect any embedded EXIF or other metadata for capture time, device, software, and possible location. Treat these fields as supporting evidence: platforms commonly strip metadata, and metadata in a downloaded file can be edited. Missing fields or a contradiction should prompt more checks, not settle the question by themselves.
Content Credentials, when present, can provide information about a file’s origin, edit history, and whether AI or non-AI tools were used. Google’s official documentation explicitly says credentials “don’t tell you if a photo or video is real or fake.” Use them to understand a file’s recorded history, then compare that history with the media and independent corroboration.

Choose checks according to what you have and what you need to establish. No single method answers every question, and each has a different reliability limit.
| Method | Useful for establishing | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Caption, account, and upload-history search | Possible source identity, an earlier post, or a changed caption | Search indexing may be incomplete; reposts can obscure the original |
| Reverse search of a screenshot or still | Earlier indexed appearances and possible reuse with new context | A match does not prove the earlier caption or current claim |
| Keyframe searches from a video | Whether selected frames appeared in earlier footage or another context | One frame cannot establish the whole sequence; crops may fail to match |
| Landmark, weather, and detail checks | Whether visible evidence fits a claimed place or time | A plausible location does not by itself establish when or why the video was made |
| Original-file metadata | Recorded capture or editing details, when present and intact | Metadata may be stripped or edited and is not proof on its own |
| Content Credentials | Recorded origin and edit-history information, when available | They do not determine whether the depicted event or claim is true |
| Independent reporting, witnesses, or records | Corroboration of the event and its context | Sources must be genuinely independent, not copies of one post |
For a newsroom-style check, AP says its user-generated content process includes contacting the original filmer for permission and further validation, then checking facts against several reliable sources. This illustrates why source contact and independent corroboration matter alongside visual analysis. AP Verify, announced by AP in 2025, combines reverse-image search, frame-by-frame analysis, geolocation, transcription, and related newsroom functions; its current features and access may change.

How should you report the result?
Use a conclusion no stronger than the evidence. Useful labels include confirmed, probably authentic, misleading context, manipulated, fabricated, or unverified. Explain which checks support the label and what remains unknown, rather than letting a single anomaly or search result stand in for a full assessment.
- Confirmed: Independent evidence supports the key claim, including the relevant time, place, or event.
- Probably authentic: Multiple checks fit, but an important element has not been independently established.
- Misleading context: The media appears genuine, but the caption, date, place, or claimed event is wrong or unsupported.
- Manipulated: Evidence supports that the media was materially edited or altered. Specify what the evidence demonstrates.
- Fabricated: Evidence supports that the depicted content was created or assembled to falsely represent an event.
- Unverified: Available evidence does not resolve the claim. This is not the same as proving it false.
Describe the evidence in reproducible terms: which frame or detail you checked, what earlier version you found, and which independent source supports or contradicts the claim. The Internet Society advises readers not to pass an item on when its origin cannot be established; an “I’m not sure” repost can still spread it as though it were evidence.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat are the most common verification mistakes?
- Confusing a real image with a true caption: The most common deception may be reuse of genuine media with a false date, place, or description.
- Searching only one frame: A different keyframe may reveal an earlier source or an unrelated scene.
- Counting copied posts as corroboration: Several reposts that trace back to one account are a single source, not independent confirmation.
- Treating missing metadata as suspicious proof: Platforms often remove metadata, so its absence is common and inconclusive.
- Calling something AI-generated from appearance alone: Visual artifacts can be caused by compression or editing, and generative systems can avoid obvious flaws.
- Overstating what a tool found: A search match shows a visual or indexed relationship; it does not automatically verify an event or caption.
AP senior vice president and chief technology officer Gianluca D’Aniello put the broader need plainly: “In an era of rampant misinformation and digitally altered content, verification is more essential than ever.”
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a fact-check prove who first uploaded a video?
Not always. The earliest indexed post is evidence of an early appearance, not necessarily the first upload; deleted posts, private accounts, and incomplete search indexes can leave gaps. Phrase the finding as “earliest version found” unless the original filmer or another strong source establishes authorship.
Should I download a viral video to inspect it?
A downloaded copy can help with frame-by-frame review and metadata inspection, but it may already have been compressed, cropped, or stripped of metadata by the platform. Keep track of where the copy came from and distinguish it from the original file.
What does “unverified” mean—is the post fake?
No. “Unverified” means the available evidence does not establish the claim either way. It is a description of the limits of what has been checked, not a finding that the content is authentic or fabricated.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Why can’t reverse-image search find a video directly?
Typical reverse-image services compare still images, not the full moving sequence. Searching several extracted frames converts selected moments into images the services can compare, though a failure to find matches does not establish that a clip is new.
