An LTO backup is trustworthy only when you have evidence at several levels: the bytes read back match a protected manifest, the cartridge can be read end to end, the backup application reports consistent metadata, and a restore produces usable files or a working service. A job marked “successful” is not enough. Verify production cartridges with read-only scans and checksum comparisons; reserve overwrite-capable drive and media diagnostics for sacrificial cartridges. Then rehearse a representative restore and, at longer intervals, a complete recovery chain that includes catalogs, encryption keys, software dependencies and application checks.

What does it mean to verify an LTO backup?

Verification is a set of checks that answer different questions. A checksum comparison asks whether the bytes returned from tape are identical to bytes recorded when the backup was created. A tape scan asks whether the drive can read the selected tape range. An application-level check examines catalogs, file metadata and database blocks. A test restore asks the only operational question that the other checks cannot answer: can your organization turn this cartridge into usable data or a functioning service?

These layers are complementary, not interchangeable. A read pass can succeed while a catalog, encryption key or database recovery step is missing. A hash can match while the restore software cannot assemble a backup chain. SAP documentation warns that a successful backup report alone does not prove that the backup is error-free or usable for a database restore.

  • Byte identity: hashes or a manifest compare returned content with a trusted reference.
  • Media readability: a read-only assessment checks whether the drive can stream the selected tape area.
  • Backup and application consistency: catalog, file-size, byte-comparison and database checks examine what the backup software understands.
  • Recoverability: an isolated restore demonstrates that files open or that a recovered application starts and passes its own checks.

How should I prepare before reading production cartridges?

Preparation prevents a verification exercise from damaging the only copy or from producing an unrepeatable result. Create a record for each cartridge and confirm that the recovery environment can interpret the backup before you start a long scan.

Record the identity and provenance

  • Cartridge barcode and LTO generation.
  • Drive serial number and library slot, if applicable.
  • Backup-job identifier, date and the media set or chain to which it belongs.
  • Encryption or key identifier, plus the protected location of the keys.
  • Manifest path and the last verification result.
  • Backup-software, driver and drive-firmware versions.

Store the record where it will survive a tape-library or server failure. A manifest kept only on the same tape set cannot provide independent evidence if that set is damaged or altered.

Check compatibility and preserve a fallback

Use a drive, firmware, driver and backup application combination known to support the cartridge generation and the backup format. Confirm that encryption keys can be retrieved and that the catalog can be imported. Keep a second compatible drive available for cross-drive reads; a failure that follows one drive is different evidence from a failure that follows one cartridge.

Separate read-only work from destructive diagnostics

Never run an overwrite-capable test on the only production copy. HPE cautions that some diagnostics destroy existing contents and recommends new or unimportant media for destructive tests. Label sacrificial cartridges clearly so they cannot be confused with an archive set.

How do checksums and manifests prove that tape data is unchanged?

Create a manifest while writing the backup, protect that manifest separately, then read the tape and recompute the same digest for each file or segment. A match supports byte-for-byte identity with the recorded reference. It does not establish that the catalog, keys, database state or restore procedure works.

Create and protect the manifest at backup time

  1. Choose the scope: individual files, archive segments, or another unit your backup software can reproduce reliably.
  2. Generate a digest for every selected unit as it is written or immediately after the write completes.
  3. Record the path or object identifier, size, digest, backup-job ID, cartridge barcode and creation time.
  4. Copy the manifest to separate storage with restricted write access or immutability. Keep enough metadata to identify the hashing algorithm and tool version.

PostgreSQL documentation lists CRC32C, SHA-224, SHA-256, SHA-384 and SHA-512 as manifest options. It describes CRC32C as faster for detecting accidental changes and SHA-family hashes as suitable when the digest must resist malicious modification. Whichever algorithm you choose, protect the manifest itself; an attacker or a damaged system that can replace both tape content and manifest can make a comparison meaningless.

Recompute after reading

  1. Read the tape contents through the backup application or an export that preserves the original file boundaries.
  2. Recompute the selected digest for each file or segment using the same encoding and scope used at creation.
  3. Compare path or object identifier, byte count and digest. Treat a missing object, changed size or changed digest as a mismatch.
  4. Save the comparison output with the cartridge, drive, software and key identifiers.

A mismatch can indicate media degradation, a marginal drive, an incorrect segment boundary, a changed file that was intentionally backed up again, or a damaged manifest. Re-read the affected range with another compatible drive, verify that the correct manifest and backup generation were selected, and compare the result with a known-good cartridge before declaring the source lost.

What each common digest choice tells you

Digest option Best-supported use Qualification
CRC32C Fast detection of accidental changes PostgreSQL describes it as faster than SHA hashes; it is not the preferred choice when resistance to deliberate tampering is required.
SHA-224 Manifest digest option Listed by PostgreSQL; the manifest still needs independent protection.
SHA-256 General-purpose tamper-evident manifest Use with a protected manifest and consistent file or segment boundaries.
SHA-384 Manifest digest option Listed by PostgreSQL; comparison proves identity only for the bytes covered.
SHA-512 Manifest digest option Listed by PostgreSQL; preserve the algorithm name with every manifest.

PostgreSQL explicitly advises that manifest verification should still be followed by test restores. A digest is evidence about content, not a substitute for exercising the recovery workflow.

How do I run a read-only tape readability scan?

Use your backup application’s tape-verification function or the library and drive vendor’s read-only media assessment. Select the broadest non-destructive range that your recovery objective justifies. A full-tape scan provides stronger coverage than a short sample because it reads through the end of data.

Configure the scan safely

  1. Load the cartridge and confirm its barcode against the verification record.
  2. Choose the read-only verification or media-assessment mode.
  3. Leave any option labeled Allow Overwrite disabled.
  4. Select Entire Tape, or the equivalent end-to-end setting, when you need coverage through the end of recorded data.
  5. Record the selected range, start and finish times, drive serial number, firmware and result.

In HPE Library and Tape Tools, the full-tape read-only assessment analyzes the existing backup. HPE documents an approximate 20-minute default duration for its LTO Media Assessment on a 2026 documentation page, but actual time varies with tape length, drive speed, positioning and error recovery. The same documentation warns that enabling overwrite destroys existing contents.

Choose quick or full coverage deliberately

Where a library supports both, a quick scan can provide one-wrap coverage for frequent monitoring, while a full scan reads to the end of data for stronger archival evidence. HPE describes both modes and records results in a media-health database. Do not describe a quick scan as an end-to-end test; it samples less of the cartridge.

Interpret a read pass correctly

A read pass shows that the selected tape range was readable with that drive under those conditions. Veeam documentation makes the boundary explicit: tape verification checks whether data can be read, but it does not check application consistency or infrastructure. A pass therefore belongs beside, not instead of, manifest comparison and restore evidence.

How can I tell whether the drive or the cartridge is at fault?

Drive diagnostics and media diagnostics are separate exercises. Use a known-good or blank cartridge for an overwrite-capable drive test, and use another compatible drive to cross-check a production read. Never infer production-backup integrity from a test that used sacrificial media alone.

Run a drive assessment on sacrificial media

HPE’s Drive Assessment writes and reads test wraps, returns PASS or FAIL, and requires a cartridge that can be overwritten. HPE lists a healthy-drive duration of about 10–20 minutes on a 2026 documentation page. IBM’s internal self-test also requires a test or blank cartridge, warns that the tape is overwritten, and lists an LTO cleaning cartridge among its prerequisites. Check the exact drive model and LTO generation before loading cleaning media.

  1. Mark the cartridge as disposable and confirm it contains no archive data.
  2. Run the vendor drive assessment and save the detailed log, not only the PASS or FAIL headline.
  3. If the test fails, inspect connections, firmware, cooling, cleaning status and error codes before putting the drive back into production.
  4. Repeat with a second sacrificial cartridge if the procedure requires confirmation.

Cross-read a suspect production cartridge

If a real backup fails to read, repeat the read-only operation with another compatible drive and, where possible, compare with a known-good cartridge in both drives. HPE guidance treats cartridge-health or drive measurements as reasons to repeat the backup with a different drive-and-tape combination. The pattern matters: one cartridge failing in multiple drives points toward media; many cartridges failing in one drive points toward the drive or its environment.

How do I perform an isolated test restore?

Restore into a disposable host, sandbox or isolated network so that a test cannot overwrite production systems or contact live dependencies. Validate the recovered result at the application layer, not merely that extraction finished.

Run a representative file restore

  1. Select files that represent the formats, directories, permissions and sizes that matter to your recovery objective.
  2. Import the catalog and provide the required encryption keys without placing the restored files on production paths.
  3. Restore to isolated storage and record cartridge, drive, software and key identifiers.
  4. Open documents, mount the recovered filesystem, recalculate checksums and compare sizes or byte content with the expected values.
  5. Record elapsed time, warnings, retries, skipped objects and any corrective action.

Choose more than a handful of tiny files. Include a large file, a deeply nested directory, files with restrictive permissions and at least one object whose application can perform an integrity check. A restore that succeeds only for small text files gives weak evidence about a large archive.

Rehearse a complete recovery chain

At a longer interval appropriate to your recovery objective, restore the complete backup chain, catalog and encryption configuration into an isolated environment. Include the software versions and drivers required to read the media. For a database, start the recovered instance and run its native consistency checks; for a service, exercise authentication, configuration, indexes and a representative transaction without connecting to production.

PostgreSQL documentation says that even when manifest verification is used, you should perform test restores and verify that the resulting databases work as expected and contain the correct data. Treat that as a requirement for database archives, not an optional demonstration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Define pass and fail criteria before the restore

  • All selected cartridges and catalog entries are located and readable.
  • Required keys decrypt the backup without an undocumented manual workaround.
  • Expected files, byte counts and permissions are present.
  • Application or database consistency checks complete successfully.
  • Recovery time and operator steps fit the documented recovery objective.
  • Warnings, retries and deviations have an owner and a corrective deadline.

A restore that produces files but cannot start the required service is a partial failure. Record exactly which layer passed and which did not; do not reduce the result to a single green status.

What is the difference between tape verification and a test restore?

Tape verification is usually a read test, while a test restore proves that the backup can be assembled and used. The methods answer different questions and carry different costs.

Method What it proves Main limitation Destructive risk
Manifest or hash comparison Returned bytes match a previously recorded digest Needs a trusted, protected manifest; does not prove application recoverability None when performed read-only
Tape readability scan The drive can read the selected tape range Does not prove catalog, database or infrastructure consistency None in read-only mode
Application verify or catalog check Backup metadata and, where supported, file or block consistency Scope varies by product and online or offline state Usually none
Isolated test restore The backup can become usable data or a working service Requires time and a recovery environment None to the source tape when restoring read-only
Drive assessment Drive and sacrificial-media health Does not validate production-backup contents Often overwrites test media

Use the table as a decision aid rather than a ranking. A monthly read-only scan may reveal a failing cartridge quickly, while a quarterly or semiannual full restore may reveal missing keys or a broken catalog that no scan can see.

How often should LTO backups be verified?

There is no authoritative industry-wide checksum algorithm or universal restore interval. Set frequency from the value of the archive, the time you have to detect degradation, media age, drive workload, retention period and recovery-time objective.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Match checks to risk

  • After each backup cycle: perform the application’s verification and a manifest comparison when practical, then restore a small representative sample.
  • On a recurring media-health schedule: run non-destructive quick scans for broad monitoring and full-tape scans when end-to-end coverage is required.
  • At longer intervals: restore a complete chain, catalog, keys and critical application or database into isolation.
  • After infrastructure changes: repeat a restore when drive firmware, backup software, encryption configuration, catalog systems or operating systems change.
  • Before a retention milestone: verify archives that are approaching their last planned recovery date so migration or re-copying can occur while another source exists.

Document the rationale for each interval. A schedule that is shorter than the time available to detect and replace a bad cartridge may be justified for critical records; a low-value archive may use less frequent full restores while still receiving read-only monitoring.

What should a verification log contain?

A durable log lets another operator reproduce the result and distinguish a media problem from an environment problem. Keep it with your backup governance records, but store a copy outside the tape set.

  • Cartridge barcode, LTO generation and backup-set or chain name.
  • Drive serial number, library location, firmware, driver and backup-software versions.
  • Backup-job ID, encryption or key identifier and manifest location.
  • Hash algorithm, scope and comparison result, including mismatched paths or segments.
  • Read-only scan mode, selected range, start and finish times, retries and error codes.
  • Drive or media diagnostic type, whether the cartridge was sacrificial and the detailed result.
  • Restore scope, destination isolation, selected files or applications and validation commands.
  • Elapsed restore time, warnings, operator, corrective action and sign-off.

Retain failed logs, not just successful ones. Trends such as rising retries, longer positioning times or repeated failures on one drive can justify maintenance before a restore emergency.

How do I troubleshoot a failed checksum, scan or restore?

Checksum mismatch but tape reads cleanly

Confirm that the manifest belongs to the exact backup generation and that the same file boundaries, compression and encryption layer were hashed. Re-read only the affected range with another compatible drive, then compare the byte count and digest again. If the second read matches the protected manifest, investigate the first drive or transfer path; if both disagree, quarantine the cartridge and locate another copy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Read-only scan reports errors

Save the error location and retry count, clean the drive only according to its manufacturer’s procedure, and repeat with another compatible drive. A cartridge that fails in multiple drives should not be treated as healthy merely because a shorter scan passed. Copy or recreate the backup while an alternate source remains available, and preserve the failed cartridge for analysis.

Drive assessment fails

Because the assessment uses overwrite-capable media, first verify that the test cartridge is disposable. Inspect cabling, firmware, cooling and cleaning status, then repeat with a second sacrificial cartridge if the vendor procedure allows. Do not use the failing drive for production verification until it passes or has been serviced.

Restore extracts files but the application will not start

Check that the complete chain, catalog, configuration, license or key material and compatible software versions were restored. Verify database logs, indexes and permissions, then run the application’s native consistency checks. Classify the event as an application-recovery failure even if every tape block was readable.

What is the minimum defensible verification workflow?

For a small team, the following sequence provides evidence without requiring an elaborate laboratory:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Record cartridge, drive, job, key and manifest identifiers.
  2. Compare recomputed hashes with a protected manifest.
  3. Run a read-only scan, selecting the entire tape when end-to-end coverage is required.
  4. Run application catalog or consistency checks supported by the backup product.
  5. Restore representative files into isolation and validate them with checksums and the relevant application.
  6. Schedule a complete chain restore that includes catalog, keys and a critical service.
  7. Store the log and corrective actions outside the tape set.

This sequence keeps destructive tests away from production media and prevents any single “pass” from being mistaken for proof of recoverability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I checksum files directly on an LTO cartridge?

You can hash data as it is read from tape, but the comparison is meaningful only when the original manifest is protected separately and the same file or segment boundaries are used. Tape streaming and backup formats may require the backup application to reconstruct files before hashing.

What does a checksum mismatch usually indicate?

It can result from damaged media, a marginal drive, selecting the wrong backup generation, or comparing different compression or encryption layers. Re-read the affected range with another compatible drive and verify the manifest metadata before quarantining the cartridge.

Do encrypted tapes need anything beyond the cartridge for a restore test?

Yes. You need the correct key identifier, access to the key material and compatible backup software. Record a key-retrieval test in the restore log; a cartridge that cannot be decrypted is not operationally recoverable even when every tape block is readable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is a second LTO drive really necessary for verification?

It is not mandatory, but it greatly improves diagnosis. Repeating a failed read in another compatible drive helps separate cartridge degradation from drive, firmware or connection problems, while a single drive cannot establish that distinction.

How should I verify an archive that has no original manifest?

Use a read-only full-tape scan, application catalog checks and an isolated restore of representative and critical data. You cannot retroactively prove byte identity against a missing reference, so document that limitation and create a new protected manifest after a successful recovery or migration.
