Do not treat the chatbot’s citation or summary as proof. Extract the precise claim, identify the election authority responsible for that contest, and compare the chatbot’s number and status with the authority’s own results page, canvass record, audit or recount notice, or certification statement. Match the election, jurisdiction, contest, reporting stage, and date before deciding whether the claim is supported.
A paywall limits what you can inspect in the cited story; it does not independently verify the chatbot’s account of that story. In the United States, election-night figures are generally unofficial and can change during canvassing. Certification is the official attestation, but the timetable and responsible office vary by state and sometimes by local jurisdiction. Other countries use different terms and procedures.

What is the fastest reliable way to check the claim?
Use the chatbot’s citation as a lead, then verify the underlying result in the responsible election office’s record. Start by writing down exactly what the chatbot asserted and what stage of counting it described. Only after those details match an official record can you say the claim is corroborated.
- Record the claim. Copy the names of the candidates or ballot measure, the contest, jurisdiction, reported totals or winner, and the date or time implied by the answer.
- Classify the claim. Decide whether it concerns a current count, a projection, a recount outcome, a canvassed total, or a certified result. These are not interchangeable.
- Inspect the citation metadata. Note the publisher, author, publication or update date, and any election authority named in the story. If the article is paywalled, record that you could not inspect its full text.
- Find the responsible election office. For a U.S. state or federal contest, begin with the state or territory election website. For a county, city, or other local contest, use that jurisdiction’s official election office.
- Compare like with like. Check the same contest, geographic area, reporting stage, and date. A later official update can differ from an earlier article without either source being erroneous.
- Report the limit of your conclusion. If the official record matches, identify the record and its date. If no official record matches and the article cannot be read, say that the article’s support could not be independently confirmed.
This approach follows the U.S. Election Assistance Commission’s explanation of results, canvass, and certification and Elections Alberta’s warning that AI systems can provide inaccurate, incomplete, or outdated election information.

How do I extract an election claim from a chatbot answer?
Turn the conversational answer into a testable statement before searching. Vague wording such as “Candidate A won” hides the details that determine whether a comparison is valid.
Write down the five identifiers
- Contest: for example, a mayoral race, legislative district, statewide office, or ballot proposition.
- Jurisdiction: country, state or province, county, municipality, district, or riding.
- People or measure: the candidates’ names or the exact ballot-measure title and options.
- Numbers and status: vote totals, percentages, margin, winner, and labels such as projected, unofficial, preliminary, canvassed, certified, or recount.
- Time reference: election date plus the publication, update, or “as of” time in the answer.
Also distinguish a claim about who was leading at one moment from a claim that a result was final. A chatbot may compress those different statements into one sentence.
Preserve the chatbot’s wording
Save a screenshot or copy of the answer, including the citation and any footnote. Do not silently correct a candidate’s name, round a total, or replace “projected” with “won” while taking notes. Your verification should test what was actually said.
Where do I find the official election result?
For U.S. elections, go first to the state or territory election authority, then to the local office when the contest is administered locally. The Federal Election Commission explains that state offices certify results and that the FEC is not the immediate source for current results; its own compilation is primarily historical and based on state and territorial records.
Use the office that has legal responsibility
- Statewide and state legislative contests: use the state election office’s results, canvass, audit, recount, and certification pages.
- County, city, school-board, and other local contests: use the county or municipal election office identified by the state’s official election site.
- Federal contests: current totals still come through state and local election administrators; federal historical compilations are not a substitute for a live count.
An official-looking page is not enough. Check its domain, the office named on the page, the election date, and whether the page labels figures as unofficial, preliminary, or certified.

What if the chatbot cites a media projection?
A projection or media call can describe what a news organization believes will happen, but it is not an election authority’s certification. The EAC distinguishes media calls from official results. Treat the projection as context and verify the tally and final status through the election office.

How do I compare the chatbot’s number with the official record?
Use the same five comparison axes every time: issuing authority, jurisdiction and contest, publication or update time, reporting stage, and type of record. A result total, a projection, an audit finding, and a recount outcome answer different questions.
| Comparison | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Issuing authority | Chatbot, publisher, state office, county office, canvassing board, or certification authority | Only the legally responsible election authority can attest to the official result. |
| Contest and jurisdiction | Same candidates or measure and same geographic area | A statewide total cannot verify a county or district claim. |
| Time | Election date and each record’s publication or update timestamp | Later counting can legitimately change an earlier total. |
| Status stage | Preliminary, unofficial, canvassed, certified, or recount | “Leading” and “certified winner” are not equivalent statements. |
| Record type | Result total, projection, audit report, recount result, or certification statement | Each record has a different purpose and evidentiary weight. |
When the official page is still marked unofficial, preserve that label in your explanation. Do not call the figure final merely because it is on a government website.
Why do election results change after election night?
Election-night reporting is commonly an incomplete, unofficial snapshot. Eligible mail, provisional, military, overseas, and other ballots may still be processed, and officials must canvass the returns before certification. A changed tally alone does not demonstrate an error or wrongdoing.
What happens during the canvass?
The canvass is the post-election process of aggregating and confirming valid ballots and reconciling election data. Officials review returns from the relevant jurisdictions and resolve required discrepancies under their local rules. The exact tasks, deadlines, and responsible officials differ across states and localities.

How do audits and recounts fit in?
An audit checks aspects of the count or voting process under the jurisdiction’s rules. A recount is a further examination of ballots when authorized or triggered by law. Either can occur before certification or, depending on local procedure, affect the final record. Look for the office’s audit or recount notice rather than assuming that a changed number is unexplained.
What does certification mean?
Certification is the official attestation of the final result. It is the strongest answer to “when is it final,” but the date, official, and sequence are not uniform nationally. The EAC notes that certification authorities and dates vary by state and sometimes by local jurisdiction.
How should I handle a paywalled article I cannot read?
Be explicit about what is inaccessible and what you verified independently. A chatbot’s paraphrase is not a substitute for the article’s text, and a headline or search snippet may omit qualifications.
- Capture the citation details: publisher, author, headline, publication date, update date, and the URL exactly as shown by the chatbot.
- Check the accessible material: note whether only a headline, excerpt, or metadata is visible. Do not infer the article’s full argument from that fragment.
- Find the named authority: if the citation identifies a state, county, or national election office, open that office’s own record separately.
- Compare the claim, not the paywall: test the chatbot’s stated number and status against the official record for the same moment.
- Phrase the result carefully: “The official county canvass dated [date] reports X” is supportable; “The paywalled article definitely said X” is not unless you could inspect it.
If the official record supports the chatbot’s claim but the article remains inaccessible, you have verified the election fact, not the article’s reporting or context. If no official match exists, leave the article’s support unconfirmed.

California illustrates the variation
California’s Secretary of State describes a county canvass, a public manual tally, county result deadlines, and a state certification schedule. Those details show why a California result page can contain several dates and stages. They apply to California; they do not establish the timetable for another state.
State and local records can both be necessary
A state page may aggregate county totals while a county office maintains the detailed canvass, audit, or recount documents. For a local contest, follow the official path to the office that conducted the canvass. If two government pages differ, compare their “as of” times and status labels before treating the difference as a contradiction.
How is verification different in Canada?
Use Elections Canada or the relevant provincial or territorial authority and keep Canadian terminology separate from U.S. terminology. Elections Canada’s Directive on Election Results Reporting, approved July 16, 2026, distinguishes preliminary, validated, and official voting results.
The directive describes validation in the presence of authorized observers. Those categories and procedures should not be translated automatically into “unofficial,” “canvassed,” or “certified” as used in a U.S. state. For a Canadian claim, identify the authority, riding or other jurisdiction, election date, and the result category printed on the Canadian record.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do when two records conflict?
Do not choose the larger, newer-looking, or more prominently displayed number without diagnosing the difference. Build a side-by-side comparison and explain any stage or timing gap.
Best Value
| Question | Example finding | How to describe it |
|---|---|---|
| Are the jurisdictions identical? | One page covers a county; the other covers the whole state | They are not competing totals for the same claim. |
| Are the timestamps identical? | The article predates a later official update | The official record reflects additional counting after publication. |
| Are the status labels identical? | One is a projection and one is unofficial returns | Neither label alone establishes certification. |
| Did ballots continue through normal procedures? | Mail or provisional ballots were added during canvass | The tally changed during ordinary post-election processing. |
| Was there an audit or recount? | A later notice reports a recount outcome | Use the notice and its date to explain the revised figure. |
If the discrepancy remains after these checks, contact the responsible election office or report that the records cannot yet be reconciled. Do not fill the gap with the chatbot’s confidence.
How can I write a transparent verification note?
A short note should let another reader reproduce your check without needing the paywalled story.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Claim tested: quote or accurately transcribe the chatbot’s statement.
- Official record: name the election authority, page or document title, contest, and record date.
- Status: state whether the record is preliminary, unofficial, canvassed, audited, recount-related, validated, or certified.
- Comparison: explain whether the totals and winner match and identify any timing difference.
- Remaining uncertainty: say if the cited article could not be inspected or if the official record is not yet final.
For example: “The chatbot attributed the result to a story published on election night. The county’s later unofficial returns list the same winner but a different total after additional ballots were counted. The cited article could not be inspected, so its wording and context remain unconfirmed.”
What mistakes make chatbot election checks unreliable?
- Checking only the chatbot’s link: a citation is a lead, not independent evidence.
- Searching only the candidate’s name: similar contests or jurisdictions can produce a false match.
- Ignoring the date: a current certified record may not match an earlier preliminary report.
- Calling every government number final: official pages can still display unofficial returns.
- Using the FEC for a live state count: the FEC directs users to state offices for current results.
- Generalizing a state schedule: California’s canvass and certification procedure is not a national timetable.
- Translating terms across countries: Canadian “validated” and “official” categories follow Canadian rules.
- Treating a changed tally as evidence of misconduct: changes are expected while eligible ballots are processed and returns are canvassed.
What is the final checklist?
Before repeating an AI-cited election result, confirm each item below:
- The exact contest, jurisdiction, candidates or measure, and election date are identified.
- The chatbot’s number, winner claim, and implied timestamp are preserved accurately.
- The cited publisher, author, and publication or update date are recorded.
- The responsible election authority’s record has been located.
- The official record’s status label is noted without upgrading it to “final.”
- The two records are compared for stage, jurisdiction, record type, and time.
- Any canvass, audit, recount, or certification notice has been checked.
- Country- and state-specific terminology and deadlines have not been generalized.
- Any paywall limitation is disclosed separately from the election fact.
- The conclusion says precisely what is supported, what changed, and what remains unconfirmed.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI chatbot be right even when its cited article is behind a paywall?
Yes, but correctness must be established independently. The chatbot may have summarized a real report, yet the inaccessible article cannot by itself verify the summary; an official election record can confirm the underlying number or status.
Are election-night television calls legally binding?
No. A media organization’s call is an editorial projection, not an election authority’s certification. Legal finality comes through the jurisdiction’s canvass and certification process.
What does “validated” mean in Canadian election reporting?
In Elections Canada’s July 16, 2026 directive, validated results are a distinct reporting category between preliminary and official results. The term belongs to that Canadian framework and should not be assumed to have the same meaning in a U.S. state.
Who should I contact if an official result page appears inconsistent?
Contact the election office responsible for the contest, such as the county or municipal office for a local race or the state or territorial office for a broader contest. Provide the contest, page dates, status labels, and the exact discrepancy so staff can identify which record governs.
