Do not trust a message merely because it contains a familiar face, voice or polished writing. AI-generated scams can clone voices, fabricate videos, create convincing profile photos and build look-alike websites at scale. The safest way to spot one is to combine seven checks: pause when you feel pressured, inspect the account history, verify every address and link, look for media inconsistencies, question familiar voices making unusual requests, confirm the story through a separate trusted channel, and refuse payments or codes until identity is proven.
No single tell proves that content is fraudulent. The FBI said in a 2025 alert that AI-generated content is often difficult to identify. Behavioral clues—urgency, secrecy, impersonation and a demand for money or credentials—remain more dependable than trying to detect a perfect visual artifact.

Stop the interaction long enough to make an independent check. Do not reply, click, download an attachment, call the number shown in the message or send a verification code while you are deciding whether it is real.
- Put the phone down or close the chat for a moment.
- Write down what is being requested and who supposedly sent it.
- Open a new browser window or use a contact method you already trust.
- Ask a second person to review the request if money, account access or personal safety is involved.
Scammers deliberately compress your decision time. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau guidance describes urgency and emergency language as a way to trigger an emotional response before you can verify facts. AI makes that pressure more persuasive by supplying a familiar-looking voice, face or writing style.

Why urgency and secrecy are such strong warning signs
A real bank, employer or public agency may have deadlines, but it should still allow you to use its published contact information and normal procedures. A demand to “keep this between us,” “act in the next five minutes,” or “do not call anyone” is an attempt to block verification. Treat the combination of urgency, secrecy and a request for money or information as high risk, even when the message appears to come from someone you know.
How can I inspect the sender and account history?
Check whether the identity has a credible history before you evaluate the message itself. Open the profile, email header or contact record without using links in the message, and compare it with the person or organization’s established account.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Look for a newly created account, a very small friend or follower list, copied profile pictures and generic biographies.
- Read several older posts. Unnatural comments, sudden changes in writing style or a burst of activity can indicate a fabricated or compromised account.
- Check whether the displayed name matches the username, email address and profile image. Small mismatches are meaningful.
- Be cautious when a conversation moves from a protected platform to WhatsApp, Telegram, private email or another channel at the sender’s insistence.
- For a company or agency, compare the account with the organization’s verified website and other established social channels.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service identifies thin profiles, unusual activity and requests to move conversations off-platform as common characteristics of scams. A long-established account is not automatic proof of safety—criminals can hijack genuine accounts—but a sparse or inconsistent history should lower your trust immediately.
How do I check an email address, phone number or website link?
Read the contact details character by character and verify them outside the message. Do not rely on a familiar logo, display name or a link preview.
Inspect the address
Expand the full sender address in email. Compare every letter before and after the “@” symbol, including the top-level domain. Scammers often replace one character, add a word, use a look-alike domain or place a legitimate name in a misleading subdomain. On a phone, compare the number with one stored in your contacts rather than trusting caller ID; caller ID can be spoofed.

Inspect the destination
Hover over a desktop link or press and hold on a mobile device to reveal its destination without opening it. Check spelling, hyphens, extra words, shortened URLs and the domain immediately before the first single slash. A padlock only indicates an encrypted connection; it does not prove that the site is legitimate.

The FBI warns that slight alterations in names and contact information are used to impersonate trusted people and institutions. CFPB guidance recommends finding an organization’s official website or phone number yourself and using that route instead of the link or number in a message.
What a safe verification call looks like
Close the suspicious conversation, search for the institution through a source you already trust, and dial the published number. For a family member, use the number in your address book or contact another relative. Never “verify” by replying to the original message; that keeps you on the scammer’s channel.
What visual or video clues can expose an AI deepfake?
Look for several inconsistencies across the entire clip, but treat them as clues rather than proof. Modern generation tools can correct individual defects, and compression or poor lighting can make genuine media look strange.
- Hands, fingers, feet, teeth or eyes that change shape between frames.
- Faces that become indistinct at the edges, especially around hair, glasses or jewelry.
- Shadows, reflections or lighting that do not match the scene.
- Jerky movement, unnatural pauses, frame-to-frame warping or a video that appears to lag.
- Lip movements that do not match speech, odd mouth shapes or a voice that seems detached from the speaker.
- Watermarks, text or logos that blur, mutate or contain misspellings.
FBI and Postal Inspection Service guidance lists distorted anatomy, lighting problems, lip-sync errors and unnatural motion among common deepfake indicators. Do not reject a message solely because of one odd hand or a blurry frame. Instead, combine media evidence with the sender’s history, the request being made and an independent identity check.

How can I tell whether a familiar voice has been cloned?
Judge the request and the call-back method, not just the sound. A short public audio clip can be enough for a criminal to synthesize a convincing imitation. Familiar words, a recognizable accent and emotional delivery therefore cannot authenticate a caller.
Listen for mismatches
- An unusual tone, vocabulary or rhythm for that person.
- Delays, mechanical-sounding transitions, clipped words or a mismatch between the voice and background noise.
- An emergency story that conflicts with what you know about the person’s location or circumstances.
These signs are not conclusive. A real caller may be distressed, using a poor connection or speaking in a noisy place. The decisive warning is an out-of-character demand for money, login credentials, a one-time passcode or secrecy.
Use a family challenge phrase
Agree in advance on a phrase that is not posted online and use it only for emergencies. If a supposed relative cannot provide it, end the call and contact that person through a known number. Do not ask the caller to choose a phrase during the emergency; a scammer can simply agree to any suggestion.
How do I verify an urgent request through a separate trusted channel?
End the original interaction and start a new one using contact information you obtained independently. This is the most reliable defense when text, audio or video appears convincing.

- Find the person’s number in your address book, a previously saved email thread or an official statement—not in the suspicious message.
- Call or message that known contact and ask whether they made the request.
- For a bank, employer or agency, use the telephone number printed on a card or statement, or type the official web address yourself.
- Confirm the exact amount, account, deadline and payment method before taking any action.
Never provide a two-factor authentication code over email, text or an encrypted messaging app. Such codes are designed to prove that you control an account; anyone asking you to read one aloud may be trying to complete a login or reset while you are on the phone.

When the caller claims a loved one is in danger
Ask a neutral question that only the real person or family would know, then verify through another relative or a known number. If there is an immediate physical threat, contact local emergency services directly rather than relying on instructions from the caller. Do not let a demand for secrecy prevent you from seeking help.
Which payments and links should I refuse until identity is confirmed?
Refuse any hard-to-recover payment or unverified link. Gift cards, cryptocurrency, wire transfers and many payment-app transfers are attractive to scammers because they can be difficult to reverse. A request for an account password, recovery code or multi-factor authentication code should stop the interaction just as firmly.
| Request | Why it is high risk | Safer response |
|---|---|---|
| Gift card numbers or photographs | Funds can be redeemed quickly and are rarely recoverable. | Do not buy or share the card; contact the supposed organization independently. |
| Cryptocurrency or a wire transfer | Transfers may be irreversible and recipients can hide their identity. | Pause and ask your bank’s fraud department before sending anything. |
| Payment-app transfer to a new contact | Speed and social pressure can bypass normal review. | Verify the recipient through a known channel and use a normal invoice or account process. |
| One-time passcode or recovery code | It can authorize a login, password reset or account takeover. | Keep the code private and contact the service through its official support route. |
| Link or attachment from an unverified sender | It may steal credentials, install malware or redirect you to a look-alike site. | Do not open it; navigate to the service manually. |
The method of payment is not the only issue. A legitimate request delivered through a compromised account can still point to a real-looking destination controlled by a criminal. Verification must cover both the person and the specific transaction.
What should I do if I already clicked, replied or sent money?
Act immediately and preserve evidence. Fast reporting can limit further loss, although no response can guarantee recovery.
- Stop communicating with the sender and do not pay an additional “release,” “tax” or “recovery” fee.
- Contact the bank, card issuer or payment service using its official number. Ask whether a transfer, card payment or account change can be stopped or reversed.
- Change the affected password from a clean device, sign out other sessions and enable multi-factor authentication through the service’s genuine settings page.
- If you entered a code, tell the service that an account takeover may be in progress and ask it to revoke active sessions and recovery methods.
- Save screenshots, email headers, phone numbers, wallet addresses, transaction IDs and the exact wording of the request.
- Report the account or content to the platform and notify the appropriate financial-crime or law-enforcement authority in your country.
If you opened an attachment or installed software, disconnect the device from the network while seeking help from a qualified security professional. Do not delete evidence before you have recorded it.

Can AI-detection tools prove that a message is a scam?
No. Automated detectors and visual “tells” can support a judgment, but they cannot authenticate a person or guarantee that media is genuine. The FBI’s 2025 warning explicitly notes how difficult AI-generated content can be to identify. A detector can miss a carefully made fake, while a genuine recording can be flagged because it was compressed, edited or recorded in poor conditions.
Use a layered decision: identity history, contact details, behavioral pressure, media consistency and independent verification. If those checks disagree, choose the action that protects your money and accounts—do not click, pay or disclose a code until the uncertainty is resolved.
How can families and workplaces prepare for AI impersonation?
Agree on verification procedures before an emergency occurs. Preparation removes the time pressure scammers depend on.
- Choose a private family phrase and a second trusted contact for emergencies.
- Keep important phone numbers and account support numbers offline or in a password manager.
- Set a rule that no one requests money, passwords or one-time codes solely by text or voice message.
- For workplaces, require payment changes and urgent wire requests to receive confirmation through a separate channel and, where possible, a second employee’s approval.
- Limit public voice and video material when practical; openly posted clips give impersonators more raw material.
These controls do not need to identify every synthetic image or cloned voice. They make the scam fail even when the imitation looks and sounds convincing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a scammer clone my voice from a voicemail greeting?
A short public recording may provide enough material for a convincing imitation, so avoid posting long, clear voice clips publicly when practical. Tell relatives that a familiar voice alone is not authentication and that your private challenge phrase and known call-back number are the deciding checks.
What if the message comes from my real friend’s hacked account?
Treat the account as untrusted until your friend confirms the request outside that platform. Contact the person through a saved number or an older, known conversation, and report the suspicious activity so the account owner can secure it.
Recommended Free Tools
Is a video call safer than a phone call?
Not automatically. A live-looking face, delayed movement or lip-sync can be generated or manipulated, and a genuine account may be compromised. Verify the person and the transaction through an independent channel before sending money or credentials.
Should I warn others after receiving an AI scam?
Yes, but share the evidence without amplifying private data or the scam link. Report the account to the platform, alert the impersonated person or organization through an official channel, and tell likely targets which verification step exposed the fraud.
