Verify an AI-assisted report claim by claim before relying on it. A fluent paragraph is not evidence: open each important citation at its original publisher, check the exact context and date, independently corroborate consequential claims, and recompute every material number or table. Record what you checked, what changed, who reviewed it, and what uncertainty remains. Treat the output as a draft from an assistant—not an authority—until those checks are complete.
What does it mean to verify an AI-assisted report?
Verification means testing whether each checkable statement is true, current, properly supported, and reproduced correctly. It is different from proofreading, checking whether a hyperlink works, or judging whether the prose sounds human. A citation can resolve to a real page and still fail to support the sentence attached to it.

Use the level of checking that matches the consequence of an error. A typo in a background paragraph may need a quick source check; a figure that drives a medical, legal, financial, safety, hiring, or policy decision needs primary evidence, independent calculations, and qualified human review.
- Facts and dates: confirm the event, definition, jurisdiction, and time period.
- Statistics: confirm the numerator, denominator, population, sampling method, uncertainty, and whether the figure is a count, rate, percentage, estimate, or projection.
- Quotations: locate the original wording, speaker, date, and surrounding argument.
- Interpretations: separate what the source says from the report’s inference.
- Opinions and recommendations: label them as judgment rather than presenting them as established fact.
The House of Commons Library describes the appropriate posture simply: “AI should be treated as an assistant, not an authority.” Government of Canada guidance likewise says not to consider generated content authoritative. Those principles apply even when an answer includes confident language, footnotes, or a polished bibliography.

How should I define the scope and risk before checking?
Start by deciding which claims could change a decision, then check those first. This prevents spending an hour polishing low-impact wording while an unsupported headline statistic remains unchecked.
Mark high-consequence claims
- Amounts, rates, rankings, forecasts, and comparisons used to justify an action.
- Legal, regulatory, contractual, medical, scientific, or safety statements.
- Claims about named people, organizations, products, incidents, or allegations.
- Dates, deadlines, eligibility rules, version numbers, and policy requirements.
- Conclusions that depend on a calculation, chart, model, or selected sample.
Set a stop-and-escalate rule
Decide in advance which findings require a subject-matter expert. For example, an unsupported legal interpretation should be withheld from publication until a qualified legal reviewer checks the primary rule and jurisdiction. A report can be useful as a draft while still being unfit for a decision.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow do I turn fluent prose into checkable claims?
Split each sentence into the smallest statements that can be proved or disproved. Record the exact wording and location before searching, because later edits can hide what the model actually asserted.
- Copy the sentence, table row, chart label, or quoted passage into a verification log.
- Break compound sentences at every “and,” “because,” comparison, date, or number.
- Classify each item as fact, statistic, quotation, interpretation, or opinion.
- Note the report section, page or paragraph, and any calculation that produces the result.
- Flag words that increase the burden of proof, such as “causes,” “proves,” “all,” “never,” “significant,” or “most.”
For example, “The program cut costs by 30% and caused faster service in 2025” contains at least two claims. One requires a defined cost baseline and period; the other makes a causal claim that may require a controlled comparison. They should not share a single citation by default.
How can I trace an AI citation to the original source?
Follow every URL, DOI, footnote, and quoted passage to the organization that actually issued the evidence. A search-result snippet, aggregator, copied bibliography, or link that merely contains similar words is not enough.
- Open the link and confirm that it resolves to the claimed author, organization, title, venue, and document.
- Check publication and update dates, edition or version, jurisdiction, and whether the page has a correction, retraction, or replacement.
- Prefer the original legislation, regulator, official dataset, peer-reviewed record, technical standard, or issuing organization over a secondary summary.
- Save the stable URL or identifier and the access date in your log.
- If the link is dead, search the publisher’s archive or DOI registry; do not silently substitute a different source.
AI systems can invent a paper, DOI, author, or quotation. They can also attach a genuine source to a claim that the source never makes. Therefore, “the link works” is only an existence check, not a support check.

How do I read a source in enough context to test the claim?
Read beyond the sentence that appears to match. Confirm the source’s population, method, definitions, uncertainty, limitations, and the argument immediately before and after the cited passage.
- Scope: Is the evidence about the same country, industry, age group, sample, product version, or time period?
- Method: Was it an experiment, survey, administrative count, model, review, or commentary?
- Definitions: Does “revenue,” “user,” “failure,” or “accuracy” mean the same thing in both documents?
- Uncertainty: Are confidence intervals, margins of error, ranges, or assumptions omitted?
- Limitations: Does the source warn about missing data, selection bias, small samples, or inability to infer causation?
- Status: Has a newer edition, amended rule, correction, or retraction superseded it?
Watch for changed units, a cherry-picked period, a base-rate mistake, or a conclusion stronger than the evidence. “Associated with” does not automatically become “caused,” and a percentage-point change is not the same as a percentage change.
How do I test whether a citation actually supports the sentence?
Compare the report’s exact wording with the evidence passage and label the result. Topic overlap is not support.
| Result | Meaning | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Supported | The source directly establishes the claim with matching scope and qualifications. | Keep the wording and record the passage. |
| Partly supported | The source supports only some elements, a narrower population, or a less certain conclusion. | Rewrite to the supported scope and retain the caveat. |
| Contradicted | The source reports a different value, direction, definition, or conclusion. | Correct or remove the claim; investigate why it diverged. |
| Unsupported | The source is real but contains no evidence for the sentence. | Find a suitable source or mark the statement unverified. |
| Unverifiable | The citation is fabricated, inaccessible, or too incomplete to identify. | Do not publish it as fact. |
Keep the source’s qualifiers next to the number or conclusion in your rewrite. If a study reports an estimate for a particular sample and year, do not present it as a universal current rate.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How should I corroborate important claims independently?
For material claims, find a second credible source that did not simply copy the AI output. Independence reduces the chance that one error has been repeated through a chain of summaries.
- Use the primary issuer first: an official statistic, regulator, court or legislation, original dataset, or peer-reviewed study.
- Seek an independent institution with a different collection or analysis process.
- Compare definitions, dates, populations, and methods before comparing the numbers.
- Investigate disagreement instead of averaging it away; the difference may reflect a changed denominator or revision.
- Record why one source is preferred and what uncertainty remains.
For a historical event, for example, an archive and an official record may corroborate the date while differing on interpretation. Report that distinction rather than presenting a false consensus.

How do I check AI-generated calculations and tables?
Reperform the work from the underlying data or source table; never assume that a plausible result is correct. Recalculate totals, percentages, rates, differences, rankings, and any value derived from another value.
Recompute the inputs and formula
- Obtain the original dataset or table, including definitions and notes.
- Write down the formula in plain language and mathematical notation.
- Verify the numerator, denominator, units, date range, inclusion rules, and rounding.
- Recalculate with an independent method, such as a spreadsheet formula and a short script or hand calculation.
- Compare your result with both the AI report and the cited source.
Run consistency checks
- Do category totals equal the stated grand total?
- Do percentages sum to 100% when they should, allowing for disclosed rounding?
- Are rates expressed per the same base (per 100, per 1,000, or per million)?
- Are dates inclusive or exclusive, and are time zones consistent?
- Are negative values, missing records, duplicates, and boundary cases handled?
- Does the ranking change when tied values are treated correctly?
Example: if 240 of 800 cases meet a condition, the rate is 240 ÷ 800 = 0.30, or 30%. If the report compares that with 18 of 50 cases, the second rate is 36%; the difference is 6 percentage points, while the relative increase is 20% (6 ÷ 30). Those are different statements and should not be interchanged.
For charts, inspect the underlying values, axis scale, truncation, labels, and whether the visual implies a larger difference than the data supports. A polished chart can preserve a transcription error.
How do I audit every citation before publication?
Use a citation audit separate from the general fact check. It verifies identity, accessibility, currency, and support for each citation.
- Does the reference identify the correct author or issuing body and work?
- Does the URL, DOI, or document number resolve to that work?
- Is the source accessible to the intended reader, or is the access limitation disclosed?
- Is it current for the claim, or has a newer rule, edition, correction, or dataset replaced it?
- Does it support the entire sentence, including qualifiers and causal language?
- Is the quotation exact, with the correct speaker, date, punctuation, and surrounding meaning?
Do not use an AI-detection score or a writing-style clue as evidence of truth or authorship. Accuracy is established by evidence and reproducible checking, not by how machine-written or human-written a paragraph appears.
What should a verification record contain?
A compact verification matrix makes corrections auditable and lets another reviewer repeat your work.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should a human expert review the report?
Get subject-matter review whenever an unsupported or ambiguous claim could cause substantial harm, liability, expense, or loss of rights. A reviewer should examine the evidence and reasoning, not merely approve the wording.
- Ask a lawyer or compliance specialist to check legal and regulatory conclusions.
- Ask a qualified clinician or scientific subject expert to check medical or technical interpretation.
- Ask a statistician or data analyst to check sampling, uncertainty, models, and derived metrics.
- Ask a domain owner to verify operational facts, product versions, and internal policy.
Document the reviewer’s scope and unresolved issues. “Reviewed” is not a substitute for stating what was actually tested.
When must I reverify an AI-assisted report?
Repeat the relevant checks whenever a material input changes, not only when the prose is regenerated.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- The cited source, dataset, legislation, product documentation, or version changes.
- The prompt, attached files, retrieval settings, tool, model, or model version changes.
- The report is used for a new geography, population, date range, or decision context.
- A correction, retraction, security advisory, or policy update appears.
- A reader, reviewer, or affected party challenges a claim.
Mark which claims were rechecked and which remain unchanged by the update. Provenance credentials or watermarks can provide evidence about origin or edit history, but they do not prove that the report’s claims are true; their absence does not prove that content is inauthentic.
What are the most common verification failures?
Most failures come from accepting a plausible shortcut. Fix the process rather than relying on better-sounding prompts.
Best Value
- Trusting fluency: require an evidence passage for every material claim.
- Checking only that a link opens: test identity, date, context, and exact support.
- Using a secondary summary as the original: trace to the issuing body or primary record.
- Copying AI arithmetic: recompute from source inputs and inspect units and denominators.
- Overstating causation: preserve the source’s observational or correlational language.
- Ignoring omissions: look for missing exceptions, uncertainty, and limitations.
- Letting one reviewer approve everything: match expertise to the claim’s risk.
- Failing to preserve records: keep prompts, inputs, versions, calculations, and decisions.
How can I choose the right depth of checking?
Choose a workflow by risk, claim coverage, source authority, independence, reproducibility, uncertainty handling, reviewer expertise, documentation quality, and re-verification triggers.
| Use case | Minimum defensible process | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|
| Low-stakes background note | Extract claims, open citations, check dates and wording, and correct obvious errors. | A claim becomes central to a decision or cannot be sourced. |
| Public article or business analysis | Full claim log, primary sources, independent corroboration for key facts, calculation reproduction, and citation audit. | Sources disagree, methods are complex, or a named party could be harmed. |
| High-impact decision | All of the above plus documented expert review, preserved inputs and versions, explicit uncertainty, and approval before use. | Any material claim remains unsupported or the underlying data cannot be reproduced. |
A checklist or audit template helps standardize this work, but a template cannot decide whether evidence supports a claim. The reviewer still has to read the source, test the numbers, and record the judgment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I trust an AI-generated statistic if several websites repeat it?
Not automatically. Repeated wording may trace back to the same original error; identify the primary dataset or issuing organization and compare its definition, date, denominator, and method with the statistic in the report.
What should I do when the original citation is behind a paywall?
Record the inaccessible source and look for an official open version, repository copy, dataset, filing, or later document that quotes it transparently. If you cannot inspect the evidence and no reliable substitute exists, qualify or remove the claim rather than treating the citation as verified.
How do I verify a quotation produced by an AI tool?
Search the speaker’s original transcript, filing, recording, or publication, then compare the exact words and surrounding passages. Confirm the speaker, date, translation, and whether ellipses or edits changed the meaning.
Is a provenance watermark proof that an AI report is accurate?
No. Provenance can show where content came from or which edits occurred, but it does not establish that the underlying facts, calculations, or citations are correct. Evidence checks remain necessary.

How should I handle a source that changes after publication?
Keep the version and access date used for your decision, then compare the revised page or document and log the difference. Re-run any affected calculations or conclusions and publish a correction when the change is material.
