A “lifetime” cloud plan is prepaid access governed by a contract—not a promise that the provider will operate forever. Verify the provider’s definition of lifetime, every storage and transfer quota, the exact encryption coverage, the refund deadline and exclusions, and what happens if your account is suspended. For example, pCloud defines its individual lifetime payment as 99 years or the account holder’s lifetime, whichever is shorter; Internxt ties lifetime validity to the account holder and an age-99 rule, subject to other conditions. Before paying, save the applicable terms, record the checkout currency and date, and keep an independent local copy of important files.
What does “lifetime” mean in a cloud storage contract?
It means the provider has sold a period of service under stated terms. It does not mean the company must exist forever, maintain the same product, or preserve your data regardless of suspension, fair-use violations, inactivity, or a change in business model.

pCloud’s Help Center defines an individual lifetime payment as “for 99 years or the lifetime of the account holder, whichever is shorter.” Internxt’s legal terms say its lifetime plans are intended to provide access for the account holder’s natural lifetime, with an age-99 rule and additional account, fair-use, and termination conditions. Those definitions are materially different from the casual meaning of “for life,” so copy the exact wording into your purchase records.
Questions to answer in the provider’s terms
- Is the lifetime period tied to the named account holder, the account itself, or a fixed number of years?
- Does the provider impose an age-99 cap, an inactivity rule, or a requirement to keep the account in good standing?
- Can the plan be transferred to another person if the original buyer dies or stops using it?
- What events permit suspension or termination, and how much notice is promised?
- Does termination end access immediately, and is data export guaranteed?
Treat a lifetime purchase as a long-term prepaid subscription. The contractual term can be valuable, but it cannot insure you against a provider shutting down, changing its service, or enforcing a condition you overlooked.

How can you record every storage and bandwidth limit?
Start with a one-page quota sheet. Write the headline storage capacity, then list all limits that can prevent uploading, downloading, sharing, syncing, or using the account through an app or API. A plan that advertises several terabytes may still impose a much smaller shared-link allowance or a fair-use ceiling.
| Provider and offer evidence | Included storage | Separate transfer or sharing allowance | Other stated limits |
|---|---|---|---|
| pCloud displayed lifetime offer (2026 offer page) | 500 GB, 2 TB, or 10 TB tiers | Shared-link traffic of 1,000 GB, 4 TB, or 20 TB respectively | Check the current offer for file-count, API, inactivity, and fair-use rules; the supplied offer evidence does not state those values |
| Internxt lifetime storage | Storage can be stacked; the Help Center states a maximum total of 100 TB | Not stated in the cited Help Center material | Account, fair-use, and termination conditions apply |
| Icedrive paid plans | Plan-specific amount must be confirmed on the checkout page | Not stated in the cited plan evidence | Confirm sharing, bandwidth, file-size, and fair-use limits before purchase |
Do not assume that “storage” and “traffic” are interchangeable. Stored bytes measure how much data can remain in the account. Traffic measures data transferred, often through downloads or shared links, and can be consumed repeatedly when a popular file is downloaded. Ask whether bandwidth resets monthly, annually, or only for the lifetime of the plan; if the terms do not say, treat the limit as unresolved and ask support in writing.

- Maximum individual file size: A large archive or video may be rejected even when you have free capacity.
- File and folder counts: Millions of small files can hit an object-count limit before the terabyte allowance is full.
- Shared-link traffic: Public links may have a separate allowance from private syncing.
- API and automation quotas: Backup tools can fail when request rates or daily calls are capped.
- Fair-use controls: Providers may throttle unusual upload, download, or sharing patterns.
- Version history and trash retention: Deleted or previous versions can consume space or disappear after a stated number of days.
- Regional or plan-specific restrictions: The available tier, currency, tax treatment, and features can differ at checkout.
Save screenshots or a PDF of the plan page and the full terms on the purchase date. Record whether a quota is a hard maximum, a recurring allowance, or a discretionary fair-use threshold. If a support representative clarifies an ambiguity, retain the ticket number and the written reply.
How do you determine whether the provider can read your files?
Look past labels such as “secure,” “encrypted,” or “zero knowledge.” The key question is where encryption happens and who controls the decryption key for each type of data: ordinary files, an encrypted vault, thumbnails, search indexes, previews, shared links, and recovery copies.
What the cited provider statements establish
| Provider | Stated protection | What you still need to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Icedrive | Paid plans include client-side Twofish encryption and zero-knowledge protection for files in the encrypted space. | Whether ordinary folders receive the same treatment; how search, previews, sharing, password recovery, and support access work; and who holds keys for each area. |
| pCloud | TLS/SSL channel protection and 256-bit AES encryption are stated. | Whether encryption is client-side or server-side, which folders are covered, whether the provider can decrypt files for previews or recovery, and how shared links are protected. |
| Internxt | The cited material does not specify enough detail to establish a complete key-custody model. | Ask where encryption occurs, whether keys are controlled by you, what metadata remains visible, and whether support can access plaintext. |
TLS or SSL protects data while it travels between your device and the service. Encryption at rest protects stored data on the provider’s systems. Neither statement alone proves that the provider cannot decrypt a file. Client-side, zero-knowledge designs can reduce provider access, but coverage may be limited to a particular encrypted space rather than every folder and feature.

Questions to send before buying
- Is encryption performed before the file leaves my device, or after upload?
- Who generates and stores the keys, and can staff reset or recover them?
- Are filenames, folder names, sizes, thumbnails, search indexes, and access logs encrypted?
- Do web previews, online document editing, virus scanning, and photo recognition require plaintext?
- What happens to encrypted files if I lose a password or the account is terminated?
- Are shared links end-to-end encrypted, and can the provider revoke or inspect them?
Do not describe a provider’s marketing language as an independent security audit. It is a product claim unless the company supplies a verifiable audit scope, date, and report.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What are the refund deadlines and exclusions?
Refund rights are controlled by the offer and payment method in force when you buy. Read the promotional terms, the general sales terms, and any country-specific consumer-law notice; the shortest applicable deadline may control your practical decision.
| Provider evidence | Refund window | Important conditions |
|---|---|---|
| pCloud promotional terms reviewed for 2026 | 14 days from the purchase date | After the 14-day period, the promotion says accounts are not subject to payment refunds. |
| Internxt Help Center, February 27, 2026 | 30 days from the first payment | The standard guarantee excludes renewals and cryptocurrency payments. |
| Icedrive plans statement | 30-day full, no-questions-asked guarantee | Confirm how the guarantee applies to upgrades, renewals, partial use, and the payment method shown at checkout. |
“30 days” does not automatically mean every transaction qualifies. Check whether the clock starts at order, activation, or first payment; whether you must contact support before the deadline; and whether refunds return to the original payment instrument. A cryptocurrency exclusion can matter even when the same provider accepts cards or another method.
A refund record that protects you
- Save the offer page, terms, and checkout confirmation as PDFs or screenshots.
- Write down the exact purchase timestamp, currency, tax, plan name, and payment method.
- Test the service promptly with representative uploads, downloads, sharing, and any encrypted area you intend to use.
- If you change your mind, contact the stated support channel before the deadline and request a written confirmation.
- Keep the ticket, receipt, and any confirmation that access has been cancelled or the refund issued.
A provider’s promotional guarantee may sit alongside statutory consumer rights in your country. Those rights can vary by jurisdiction and digital-content rules, so do not assume a promotional deadline is the only legal remedy or that it applies worldwide.
What happens if the account is suspended or the provider stops operating?
Continuity is the largest risk that a lifetime label cannot remove. Internxt’s legal terms warn that, after suspension or termination, you may lose access to the Storage Services and your stored materials “may not be recoverable.” An independent 2026 comparison also identifies a provider’s business-model change as a lifetime-plan risk.

Build a recovery plan before uploading irreplaceable data
- Keep a second copy on an external hard drive or other local storage controlled independently of the cloud account.
- Use a second cloud provider only if its ownership, billing, and access are independent enough to avoid a single point of failure.
- Export representative folders, including large files, metadata, shared documents, and encrypted-space files.
- Restore those exports to a separate device and verify that filenames, permissions, timestamps, and file contents survive.
- Schedule periodic recovery tests rather than waiting for a lockout.
- Store account recovery codes, billing receipts, and the terms version with your household or business continuity records.
A backup is useful only if you can retrieve it without the original provider. Test both the download route and the decryption or password-recovery process; an archive that exists but cannot be opened is not a working backup.
How should you compare lifetime plans before checkout?
Use the same questions for every provider and make unknowns visible instead of filling them with assumptions. A low one-time price is not comparable to a higher price if the cheaper plan has narrow transfer limits, weaker export rights, or encryption that covers only a special folder.
| Comparison axis | Evidence to record | Decision question |
|---|---|---|
| Contractual lifetime | Definition, age cap, account-holder language, inactivity and termination clauses | Would the stated term still meet your expected use if your circumstances change? |
| Capacity and quotas | Stored bytes, traffic, file size, object count, API calls, version history, and fair-use wording | Which limit is most likely to block your workload? |
| Privacy and keys | Encryption location, key custody, metadata exposure, encrypted-folder coverage, and support access | Can the provider decrypt the files you consider sensitive? |
| Refund | Days, start date, exclusions, eligible payment methods, and support route | Can you realistically test the plan before the deadline? |
| Continuity and export | Termination effects, recovery language, export tools, and local-backup requirements | How quickly could you recover if access disappeared? |
| Total cost | One-time price, currency, taxes, payment fees, and any later charges shown at checkout | What is the cost in your currency, and is the price genuinely one-time? |
Mark each field as confirmed, conditional, or not stated. “Not stated” is a useful result: it tells you to ask a precise question or reject the plan, rather than treating silence as an unlimited feature.
What practical verification sequence should you follow?
Complete the checks in this order so you do not pay before discovering a deal-breaking condition.
- Identify the exact offer. Record the provider, plan name, region, currency, tax, displayed storage, and whether the page says lifetime, one-time, promotional, or introductory.
- Open the legal documents. Read the definition of lifetime, acceptable-use and fair-use rules, suspension language, inactivity provisions, and termination effects.
- Build the quota sheet. Capture storage, traffic, shared-link, file-size, file-count, API, versioning, and trash limits. Put “not stated” beside any missing value.
- Map the privacy model. Separate transport encryption, server-side encryption, client-side encryption, encrypted vaults, metadata, previews, search, sharing, and recovery.
- Confirm refund mechanics. Note the deadline, exclusions, payment-method rules, contact route, and whether upgrades or renewals are treated differently.
- Ask written questions. Send the unresolved items to support and save the response with the terms.
- Test during the refund period. Upload a large file, download it, create and revoke a link, sync across devices, and test the privacy feature you plan to rely on.
- Export and restore. Download a representative sample and open it independently before committing your only copy.
- Set up independent backup. Maintain a local copy and a recovery routine before moving irreplaceable material to the service.
What common mistakes make a lifetime plan look better than it is?
Counting only terabytes
A terabyte figure says nothing about how quickly shared links can be downloaded or whether a file-count ceiling will affect a photo library with millions of small objects. Compare the workload’s actual traffic and object pattern with every stated quota.

Assuming “zero knowledge” covers the whole account
Some services apply stronger client-side protection only inside a designated encrypted space. Confirm coverage for ordinary folders, previews, search, collaboration, and links before storing sensitive files.
Waiting until the refund deadline
Large uploads, restore tests, and support replies can take days. Run a small but realistic test immediately, and submit any refund request before the published cutoff rather than on the final evening.
Treating a lifetime payment as a backup strategy
Prepaid access does not remove provider-continuity risk. Keep an independently controlled copy and verify that you can restore it without the cloud account.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is a lifetime cloud storage plan worth buying?
It can be reasonable when the provider’s lifetime definition matches your expected use, the quotas fit your real traffic, the privacy model meets your threat model, and you can maintain an independent backup. It is a poor fit when you need guaranteed perpetual operation, cannot tolerate uncertain export rights, require end-to-end protection for every feature, or would be unable to recover if the account were suspended.

Make the decision from the completed verification sheet, not the headline discount. If a material item—such as termination recovery, key custody, or shared-link traffic—is missing, treat that uncertainty as a cost and either obtain written clarification or choose a plan with clearer terms.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a lifetime cloud plan be transferred to a family member?
Do not assume it can. Check the account-transfer, succession, and identity clauses; a plan defined as the account holder’s lifetime may be personal rather than an inheritable license. Ask the provider whether a documented transfer is permitted and what happens to encrypted data during the change.
Recommended Free Tools
Does a lifetime plan include future upgrades and new features?
The lifetime label normally describes access to the purchased service, not a guarantee that every future feature or higher capacity tier will be included. Compare the plan’s current feature list with the provider’s language about upgrades, migrations, and changed products.
What should I do if the provider refuses a refund?
Keep the invoice, saved terms, support ticket, and proof that you contacted the provider before the deadline. Escalate through the provider’s stated complaints route and, where applicable, your card issuer or local consumer-protection process; eligibility depends on your jurisdiction and payment method.
How often should I test a cloud backup?
Test a small restore after the initial setup and repeat it on a schedule appropriate to the data’s importance, such as quarterly for critical files. Include at least one large file, a folder with many small files, and any encrypted-space export so you verify real recovery rather than merely a successful upload.
