Use Dune as the SQL analytics layer, then make your tokenized-asset definitions explicit before automating anything. The reliable workflow is to identify every contract and venue, select the correct decoded or raw-event tables, save parameterized DuneSQL queries, define volume and liquidity in measurable terms, and call the API to execute, monitor, and retrieve those queries. Send the results to a dashboard, database, alerting system, or BI tool. This matters because “volume” can mean token units or quote-currency value, while “liquidity” can mean reserves, order-book depth, spread, turnover, or slippage; each answers a different question.
Dune documents APIs, connectors, dashboards, and integrations for programmatic onchain analytics at its APIs and Connectors page, and describes tokenized assets as part of the markets covered by its multi-chain platform at the Dune platform overview.

What can the Dune API do for tokenized-asset monitoring?
Dune provides a programmatic route to SQL-based blockchain analytics. You create or reuse a saved query in DuneSQL, run it through the REST API, check execution status, fetch the result set, and pass the data to another system. The same query can feed a Dune dashboard for human review while an API consumer stores snapshots or triggers alerts.
The API is an access and automation layer, not a ready-made definition of tokenized-asset markets. You remain responsible for deciding which contracts represent the asset, which venues count as trading, how to value trades, and what “liquidity” means for the instrument. Dune’s connectors and integration options are described at https://dune.com/apis-and-connectors.

For a regulated security token, onchain activity may be conditional. A transfer that appears in a raw event stream is not automatically an eligible settlement, and a failed or restricted transfer can be economically different from a completed trade. Keep those distinctions in your data model instead of treating every event as volume.
How do I define the tokenized-asset universe before writing a query?
Start with an inventory that uniquely identifies what you intend to measure. A ticker or project name is not enough: the same symbol can exist on several chains, and one asset can have multiple wrappers or pools.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Record the identity of each instrument
- Blockchain network and, where relevant, the layer or rollup.
- Token contract address and token standard, including whether it is a fungible token, non-fungible representation, or a regulated standard.
- Venue contract or order-book market where trades occur.
- Base and quote assets, with their decimal precision and any wrapped representations.
- Issuer, share class, maturity, or other identifier needed to distinguish economically different instruments.
- Effective dates for migrations, redenominations, pauses, and contract upgrades.
Store this inventory in version control or a database table that your query process can reference. When a token migrates, close the old address at the correct block or timestamp and add the new address; otherwise a historical chart can silently double-count or create a false gap.
Check transfer and identity controls
ERC-3643 implementations require identity verification and compliance checks before transfers can proceed. The standard’s interfaces and requirements are specified at https://eips.ethereum.org/EIPS/eip-3643. Add fields for transfer status, rejected or reverted calls, and any compliance-related reason exposed by the contract. Do not infer unrestricted tradability merely because a balance or transfer event exists.
Which Dune tables should supply the measurements?
Select tables according to the market structure and the question, not according to a preferred table name. Decoded tables are easier to maintain and audit; raw logs are useful when a venue or token is not decoded but require documented event interpretation.
Match the source to the venue
| Market activity | Preferred evidence | What to validate |
|---|---|---|
| Automated market maker (AMM) | Decoded swap events plus pool, reserve, or liquidity-provider records | Pool address, token ordering, fee treatment, reserve update timing, and whether liquidity is active or merely deposited |
| Central-limit order book | Decoded fills, order updates, bids, asks, and cancellations | Executed fills versus posted orders, price and quantity units, and the depth snapshot time |
| Peer-to-peer or marketplace contracts | Decoded sale or settlement events and associated payment transfers | Which event confirms settlement, the quote asset, and whether a cancellation or failed call emitted partial events |
| Undecoded or newly deployed contracts | Raw transaction traces and event logs decoded from the verified ABI or a documented manual mapping | Event signatures, indexed parameters, proxy implementation changes, and assumptions about decimals |
Use transfer tables as supporting evidence, not as a universal trade table. A transfer can represent a custody move, a mint, a burn, a redemption, or an internal settlement leg. Link transfers to a venue transaction or a decoded trade identifier before counting them as market volume.

Chains and protocols expose different fields and semantics. Keep separate saved queries when a common query would force unsafe unions, then normalize their outputs in a downstream step. A normalized record should retain chain, transaction hash, block number, event index, timestamp, market, base token, quote token, base quantity, quote quantity, price, fee, and a status or confidence field.

How should trading volume be defined?
Publish the unit, time window, timestamp rule, and filtering policy alongside every volume number. “Daily volume” is not reproducible unless another analyst knows whether it is token quantity, quote notional, or both, and whether the day is defined in UTC or another timezone.
Choose the unit deliberately
| Volume measure | Calculation | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Base-token volume | Sum of settled base-asset quantity after applying token decimals | Comparing activity in the asset itself | Cannot be compared directly across assets with different prices |
| Quote notional | Sum of settled quote-asset quantity, or base quantity multiplied by execution price | Comparing economic turnover across markets | Requires a consistent quote asset and treatment of fees |
| Both units | Store base quantity and quote notional on each trade and aggregate both | Audits, dashboards, and multi-asset reporting | Two totals must not be added together as one figure |
Normalize raw integer amounts using the decimals that apply at the event’s contract address and time. If a token changed decimals or was migrated, preserve the original raw value and the conversion rule used for that period. For quote assets that are volatile, state whether notional is reported in the quote token or converted to a fiat reference; a fiat conversion requires its own price source and timestamp policy.
Set timestamp and aggregation rules
- Use block timestamp for chain-native ordering and document that choice.
- Aggregate in UTC unless your users require a named market timezone.
- Choose calendar days, rolling 24-hour windows, or fixed intervals such as one hour; do not mix them in one chart.
- Keep transaction hash and event index so a reviewer can reproduce any bar.
- Decide whether fees are included in quote notional, reported separately, or excluded from both sides.
Filter non-economic and suspicious activity
Exclude reverted transactions and events that did not result in a completed settlement. Decide how to treat self-trades, known test transactions, liquidity rebalancing, mint-and-burn operations, and obvious wash activity. Do not silently delete records: add a reason code and retain the unfiltered count so users can see the effect of the policy.
For AMMs, a swap can include several hops. Count the user-facing economic trade once, or clearly label routed hop volume if that is the intended metric. Summing every hop without a policy inflates activity.
What should count as liquidity?
Liquidity is multidimensional. Select a measure that matches the decision a reader must make, label it in the output, and avoid presenting one metric as a universal liquidity score.
| Measure | Definition | Useful for | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| AMM reserves | Tokens available in a pool at a specified block or timestamp | Assessing immediate inventory and pool size | Reserves can be concentrated, stale, or unusable because of price impact and transfer restrictions |
| Total value locked (TVL) | Reserve quantities multiplied by selected prices | Comparing capital committed to pools | Price changes alter TVL without new liquidity; price source and valuation time matter |
| Order-book depth | Executable bids and asks within a defined percentage or absolute price band | Estimating size available near the current price | Requires a synchronized book snapshot and a rule for stale or cancelled orders |
| Bid-ask spread | Difference between best ask and best bid, reported in price units or basis points | Measuring immediacy and transaction friction | A narrow spread can coexist with very little size |
| Turnover | Volume divided by a defined inventory, such as average reserves or circulating supply | Understanding how actively available liquidity is used | Highly sensitive to the denominator and time window |
| Slippage for a standard trade | Execution-price deterioration for a specified buy or sell size | Answering whether a real order can be executed | Depends on direction, route, fees, and the chosen trade size |
Always include the venue, price band or trade size, and observation window. For example, “order-book depth within 2% of the midpoint at each hourly snapshot” is actionable; “liquidity was $X” is not.
How do I write maintainable DuneSQL queries?
Save one query for each stable metric and keep its definition in the query description or adjacent documentation. Separate queries when table schemas differ, then give their output columns the same names so a downstream process can union them safely.

Parameterize the dimensions that change
- Start and end timestamps or a rolling look-back interval.
- Chain and venue identifiers.
- Token and pool or market addresses.
- Quote asset and valuation convention.
- Aggregation interval and liquidity band or standard trade size.
Use Dune’s supported query parameters rather than string-building SQL in an external scheduler. Record the saved query ID, revision or version note, parameter values, and the time at which the query ran. If a parameter is not supported for a particular expression, keep a separate, explicitly named query instead of relying on unsafe text substitution.
Build in audit columns
Return chain, block number, transaction hash, event index, source table, and a classification or exclusion reason where possible. Include the raw and normalized quantities for decimal-sensitive assets. For liquidity snapshots, return the snapshot timestamp and the price source used for valuation. These columns make a dashboard number traceable without rerunning an opaque transformation.
How do I execute and retrieve a query through the Dune API?
The REST API workflow is authenticate, execute or reference a saved query, poll until completion, retrieve results, and paginate large responses. Dune’s current request and response fields are documented at https://getdune.org/docs/reference/api/; use that reference for the exact endpoint paths, headers, limits, and response shapes associated with your account.
- Create and validate the saved query in Dune. Run it in the editor for a short interval, inspect several transactions manually, and confirm decimals, venue classification, and exclusion counts.
- Authenticate with an API key. Keep the key in your scheduler’s secret store, never in a dashboard URL or source repository. Assign the least privilege available and rotate it according to your organization’s policy.
- Submit an execution or request an existing execution. Pass the saved query identifier and the documented parameter values. Store the returned execution identifier with your run metadata.
- Poll execution status. Wait between checks with exponential backoff. Distinguish queued, running, completed, and failed states; a transport-level success does not mean the SQL finished successfully.
- Retrieve the result set. Read column names and types from the response rather than assuming their order. Persist the execution time, query revision, parameters, and row count with the data.
- Handle pagination and limits. Follow the API’s pagination fields for large responses. If a result is too large or expensive, narrow the time window, aggregate in SQL, or split the request by chain or venue and combine the normalized outputs downstream.
Make retries safe
Retry transient network and service errors with bounded exponential backoff and a maximum attempt count. Do not blindly resubmit an expensive query after a client timeout; first check whether the original execution completed. Mark each run with a unique job identifier so duplicate retrievals do not create duplicate rows.

Should I use a Dune dashboard alone or an API-plus-database pipeline?
A dashboard is fast for exploration and team review. An API-plus-database design is better when you need independent retention, scheduled transformations, cross-source joins, or an audit trail that survives a query edit.
| Consideration | Dune-only dashboard | API plus your database |
|---|---|---|
| Refresh cadence | Convenient for interactive or scheduled dashboard refreshes within account limits | You control scheduling, backfills, and downstream materialization while still respecting API limits |
| Query cost and limits | Visible in the Dune workspace and tied to account allowances | Includes Dune execution plus your storage and compute; requires budget and rate-limit monitoring |
| Historical retention | Depends on the query and platform access available to your account | You can retain immutable snapshots and corrected revisions under your own policy |
| Alerting | Use Dune’s available monitoring or dashboard integrations | Trigger alerts from stored results and combine them with operational or compliance systems |
| Schema control | Schema and query revisions remain in the Dune workspace | Normalize columns, enforce types, and preserve raw responses alongside modeled tables |
| Auditability | Good when query IDs, revisions, and dashboard filters are documented | Stronger when every execution, parameter set, response, and transformation is retained |
For an initial investigation, start with a dashboard and a small saved query. Move to a database when you need daily history, multiple venues, corrections, or alerts that must be reproducible outside the Dune interface.
How often should tokenized-asset data refresh?
Choose a cadence based on market behavior and the cost of being late. A thinly traded private-market token may need a daily or hourly snapshot, while an actively traded venue may justify shorter intervals. The correct interval is constrained by the account’s current query, API, and result limits, which can change; verify those limits in the current Dune documentation and pricing for your account.

Use incremental windows for routine runs: query only blocks or timestamps after the last successful checkpoint, then periodically run an overlap window to catch late-arriving decoded data or corrected classifications. Deduplicate on chain, transaction hash, event index, and market identifier. Keep a full-refresh job for backfills and schema changes rather than forcing every routine run to scan all history.
What can go wrong, and how do I fix it?
The query returns no trades
Confirm the contract address, chain, date range, and venue table. Check whether the market uses a proxy or a different implementation address, and inspect raw logs for the event signature. A newly deployed or undecoded contract may require a documented raw-event decoder before decoded tables can populate.
Volume is implausibly high
Look for AMM multi-hop routing, duplicate joins between swaps and transfers, wrong decimal scaling, and inclusion of reverted transactions. Compare a sample of transaction hashes with the venue’s actual settlement and report filtered and unfiltered totals separately.
Liquidity appears high but trades move the price
TVL or reserves do not describe executable depth by themselves. Add a price-band depth or standard-size slippage measure, verify that reserves are active, and account for transfer restrictions that can prevent a nominal balance from being freely traded.
API calls time out or exceed limits
Reduce the requested interval, aggregate in SQL, split by chain or venue, and use documented pagination. Add backoff and status checks so a client timeout does not launch duplicate executions. Cache completed results and retain the execution identifier for later retrieval.
A query changed and the chart moved
Record query revisions and compare the generated SQL or documented change note. Preserve prior result snapshots when the metric is used for reporting. A changed filter, decimal rule, or price source should produce a new metric version rather than silently rewriting history.
How do I make the measurements reproducible and defensible?
Publish a metric dictionary with every dashboard or data feed. For volume, specify the unit, quote asset, decimal conversion, timestamp basis, aggregation window, fee policy, and exclusion rules. For liquidity, specify the venue, snapshot interval, price source, price band or trade size, and whether the result is a point-in-time or average measure.
Best Value
Keep an execution ledger containing query ID, revision, parameters, execution ID, start and finish times, API response status, row count, and checksum or storage location. Retain raw responses when policy permits, together with the normalized table. When a contract is upgraded or a compliance rule changes, add an effective date and rerun only the affected period with a new version label.
Use spot checks as part of operations: sample trades from each venue, compare pool reserves with independent onchain state at selected blocks, and verify that restricted or failed transfers are classified consistently. These checks do not replace a formal recordkeeping system, but they expose schema drift and decoding errors before they contaminate a long time series.
What is the practical decision framework?
- Define the instrument. List chain, contract, standard, venue, quote asset, and effective dates.
- Define the question. Choose base volume, quote notional, reserves, depth, spread, turnover, slippage, or a documented combination.
- Validate evidence. Prefer decoded trade or pool data; document raw-event assumptions when decoding is unavailable.
- Save and version the SQL. Parameterize supported dimensions and preserve query IDs and revisions.
- Test a small interval. Manually inspect transactions, decimals, fees, and failed or restricted transfers.
- Automate execution. Authenticate, execute, poll, retrieve, paginate, retry safely, and store run metadata.
- Publish with definitions. Put units, windows, filters, and liquidity dimensions beside every chart or API output.
- Operate and review. Monitor limits, schema changes, duplicate rows, and periodic backfill results.
This sequence keeps the Dune API focused on what it does best—repeatable SQL access to onchain data—while your pipeline supplies the definitions, controls, and retention needed for credible tokenized-asset market reporting.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Dune data serve as the official books and records for a regulated security?
No. Treat Dune outputs as an analytics and monitoring layer, then reconcile them with the issuer, transfer-agent, custodian, or venue records that govern legal ownership and settlement. Preserve query versions and raw evidence so an authorized records system can investigate discrepancies.
How should I handle a token that trades on several chains?
Keep chain-specific records through the ingestion stage and normalize them only after preserving the original chain, transaction hash, and event index. Aggregate across chains only when the contracts represent the same economic instrument and you have a documented bridge, wrapper, and migration policy.
What is the safest way to backfill after correcting a decimals error?
Create a new metric version, rerun the affected block or timestamp range with an overlap, and replace rows using a deterministic key such as chain, transaction hash, event index, and market. Leave the prior version available for audit instead of overwriting it without a change record.
How can I tell whether low volume means low demand or restricted transferability?
Compare completed trades with attempted, failed, and compliance-rejected transfers, and inspect the eligible-holder rules for the token. A small number of eligible participants can suppress trading even when quoted prices or pool balances look active.
