Use the Display & Video 360 (DV360) API to automate campaign and creative work, but plan for several connected resource types: a campaign alone does not configure its budget, delivery, targeting, or ads. Set up an authorized Google Cloud project and DV360 user profile, choose and test an API version, then work through advertiser, campaign, insertion order, line item, targeting, creative, and ad resources as needed. Google identifies the service endpoint as displayvideo.googleapis.com; its v5 reference describes that version as beta.
What does the Display & Video 360 API let you manage?
The API lets authorized applications manage DV360 resources programmatically. Google describes its purpose as enabling teams to “programmatically manage Display & Video 360 resources and automate complex workflows.” For campaign and creative management, that means using multiple resource types together rather than expecting one API call to create a complete, ready-to-deliver campaign.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

A typical integration uses advertiser-scoped campaign and creative resources alongside insertion orders, line items, targeting assignments, and ad structures. The API reference also lists advertiser asset uploads, ad groups, and ad group ads. Which resources you need depends on the campaign setup and creative format.
- Campaigns organize the advertiser’s campaign structure.
- Insertion orders and line items hold the operational settings that implement such things as budget, flight, bidding, and delivery.
- Targeting assignments apply targeting at the resource level supported by the API.
- Creatives and assets represent ad content and, for formats that require them, uploaded files.
- Ad structures connect creatives to the appropriate delivery setup.
Think of a campaign as the top-level container in an implementation plan, not as the whole media buy. A reliable automation records the IDs and state of every dependent resource, then verifies those resources independently. Use the official API reference and task guides for the specific resource and format you are implementing. Required fields and valid combinations vary, so a generic campaign or creative payload can be misleading.

Map the DV360 resource hierarchy before writing code
Before making a mutation, draw the relationship your workflow must create. Start with the partner or advertiser that owns the work. Under the advertiser, a campaign can contain or coordinate insertion orders. Insertion orders and line items carry the operational settings that determine how delivery is implemented. Targeting assignments apply at the resource level supported by the API. Creatives and uploaded assets then connect through ads or other documented delivery structures.
This map prevents a common implementation error: storing only a campaign ID and assuming the rest can be inferred later. Keep separate records for the advertiser ID, campaign ID, insertion-order IDs, line-item IDs, targeting assignments, creative IDs, asset references, and ad or ad-group resources. The IDs are advertiser-scoped where the endpoint says they are, so always store the owning advertiser alongside each identifier.
Which API version should you use?
The API reference exposes discovery documents for v4 and v5, and identifies v5 as beta. Do not assume that the newer version is automatically the right choice for a production integration: pin the version you adopt, test the workflows and resource schemas you depend on, and monitor Google’s migration guidance.
Use the version whose documented status, required methods, and behavior match your project’s needs. Before moving an existing integration from one version to another, verify the migration requirements rather than treating the change as a simple URL substitution. Test creation, listing, retrieval, patching, deletion, asset upload, and creative association—not just authentication—because a version change can affect a resource schema or task flow.
| Choice | What the available reference establishes | Practical decision |
|---|---|---|
| v4 | A v4 discovery document is available; its status is not stated here. | Check the current reference and migration guidance for the specific resources you use. |
| v5 | A v5 discovery document is available, and the v5 reference says it is in beta. | Pin and test it before relying on it in production; monitor changes and migration guidance. |
Keep the version in configuration rather than scattering literal paths throughout application code. A versioned client or endpoint setting makes a controlled upgrade possible and lets a test environment exercise the new discovery document before production traffic changes.
What access and setup do you need?
API credentials are only one part of authorization. The Google account used by the integration also needs a DV360 user profile with permission to access the partners or advertisers involved. Google’s quickstart lists Admin, Standard, or Read only permissions for the relevant partner or advertiser; choose permissions appropriate to the actions the application must perform. Read only can validate discovery and reporting-style reads, but it cannot replace the write permissions needed for campaign or creative mutations.
Recommended Free Tools
- Confirm account access. Make sure you have a Google Account, access to DV360, and a DV360 user profile that can see the target advertiser and perform the required work.
- Choose a Google Cloud project. Create or select the project that will own the API integration and its credentials.
- Enable and authenticate the API. Configure access for the project and authorize requests using OAuth. Use the DV360 API scope required by each method; do not assume one scope is appropriate for every operation.
- Select an integration method. Google recommends its client libraries, which provide language integration and handle parts of the authorization and request work. Direct REST calls are also possible.
- Verify access before writing. Confirm the authenticated user can see the intended advertiser before creating or changing resources.
Google lists client libraries for .NET, Java, JavaScript, Objective-C for REST, PHP, and Python, as well as early-stage libraries for Go, Node.js, and Ruby. Check the current library guidance for your language and version. A successful OAuth setup does not itself grant access to an advertiser: that depends on the DV360 user profile and its permissions.
Use a least-privilege, test-first setup
Start in a non-production advertiser or with read operations when you are validating credentials. Record which Google account authorized the client, which partner or advertiser permissions it has, and which API version the test used. Promote the same tested configuration only after a GET or LIST call confirms the expected advertiser is visible. This catches the “valid token, wrong advertiser” problem before a POST creates an unwanted resource.
How do you create and manage a campaign?
Start by identifying the advertiser and deciding which campaign resources the workflow must create or maintain. The campaign endpoint handles the campaign resource itself; the insertion orders, line items, targeting, and ads needed to implement the campaign are separate parts of the workflow.

- Check advertiser visibility. Use the authenticated profile to confirm access to the advertiser you plan to use.
- Find or create the campaign. List campaigns for the advertiser and retrieve an existing campaign when appropriate. Create a campaign only when the intended resource does not already exist.
- Build the delivery structure. Create or manage the insertion orders and line items that carry the intended budget, flight, bidding, and delivery settings.
- Assign targeting. Apply targeting using the resource type and assignment methods supported for the intended scope.
- Connect creative and ad resources. Create or upload the required creative material and associate it with the appropriate ad structures.
- Read back and maintain. Retrieve or list resources to confirm the resulting state. Use PATCH for controlled updates; treat campaign deletion as permanent.
Do not infer that creating a campaign also creates its delivery structure or assigns targeting. Check each resource’s current schema and task guide, and verify the resulting resources with read operations before relying on the setup. If your workflow creates several dependent objects, persist each successful response before moving to the next step so a later failure can resume without rebuilding earlier objects.
Campaign resource methods in v5
| Operation | Method and path | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Create | POST /v5/advertisers/{campaign.advertiserId}/campaigns |
Create an advertiser-scoped campaign. |
| List | GET /v5/advertisers/{advertiserId}/campaigns |
Find campaigns belonging to an advertiser. |
| Retrieve | GET /v5/advertisers/{advertiserId}/campaigns/{campaignId} |
Read one campaign. |
| Update | PATCH /v5/advertisers/{campaign.advertiserId}/campaigns/{campaign.campaignId} |
Apply a controlled update to a campaign. |
| Delete | DELETE /v5/advertisers/{advertiserId}/campaigns/{campaignId} |
Permanently delete a campaign. |
These are v5 paths. In the path notation, values in braces stand for the relevant advertiser or campaign identifiers; use the request and schema details in the reference for the exact call format. A list response is useful for discovery and reconciliation, while a retrieve call is appropriate when your application already has the campaign ID and needs to confirm its current state.
How should budget, flight, bidding, and delivery be organized?
The campaign resource is not where the researchable operational settings all live. Insertion orders and line items implement budget, flight, bidding, and delivery. Treat those objects as first-class parts of your campaign plan. A useful internal model stores the desired settings separately from the API IDs, then records which resource owns each setting. That makes a later PATCH deliberate instead of an accidental overwrite.
Create the parent structure in the order required by the current task guide, and do not assign a targeting or creative reference until the target line item or ad structure exists. After each creation, read the resource back and verify that its advertiser and parent IDs match the plan. If the API rejects a dependent request, preserve the earlier IDs and fix only the failed step rather than starting over.
How do you assign targeting?
Targeting is assigned at the resource level supported by the API. The right level depends on the control you need and the inheritance behavior documented for that resource. Campaign-level targeting can express broad, shared intent; line-item or ad-group targeting offers more operational separation when different delivery units need different rules.

|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Shared targeting intent across the campaign structure. | Will every insertion order and line item safely inherit the same audience or inventory rule? |
| Line item | Different targeting, bids, or delivery plans within one campaign. | Which line item owns the assignment, and how will you reconcile changes later? |
| Ad group or ad structure | Granular control close to the creative and ad delivery object. | Does the chosen format and task guide support targeting at this level? |
Do not assume that a targeting assignment made at one level automatically appears at another. Confirm the supported resource and inheritance behavior in the current documentation, then read back the assignment and its parent resource as part of verification.
How do you upload and assign a creative?
Creative work is advertiser-scoped and usually involves more than creating a creative object. Upload assets through the advertiser asset-upload resource when the chosen format requires files, create the creative with the required fields for that format, then associate it through the appropriate ad or line-item workflow.
- Choose the creative format. Consult the current schema for that format before constructing the request. Required fields vary, so do not reuse a payload from a different format without checking it.
- Upload required assets. Use the asset-upload resource when the creative needs binary or other uploaded material.
- Create the creative. Send the advertiser-scoped create request with the fields required by the selected format.
- Associate it with delivery. Use the documented ad or line-item workflow to connect the creative to the intended structure.
- Read back the result. Retrieve or list the creative and related resources to verify that the intended advertiser and associations are in place.
Separate asset handling from creative metadata in your application. An asset upload can succeed even when a later creative request fails validation, so retain the asset reference and decide whether to reuse it or clean it up according to the current documentation. Keep advertiser and creative IDs in your integration’s configuration or durable records. On retries, check whether the intended resource already exists before creating another one; this helps prevent duplicate resources when a previous request succeeded but the caller did not receive or record its response.
Creative resource methods in v5
| Operation | Method and path | Use |
|---|---|---|
| Create | POST /v5/advertisers/{creative.advertiserId}/creatives |
Create a creative for an advertiser. |
| List | GET /v5/advertisers/{advertiserId}/creatives |
Find creatives belonging to an advertiser. |
| Retrieve | GET /v5/advertisers/{advertiserId}/creatives/{creativeId} |

| Update | PATCH /v5/advertisers/{creative.advertiserId}/creatives/{creative.creativeId} |
Apply a controlled update to a creative. |
| Delete | DELETE /v5/advertisers/{advertiserId}/creatives/{creativeId} |
Delete a creative. |
Use the current v5 schema for the selected format to determine required fields and valid combinations. The endpoint table shows the resource operations, not every format-specific validation rule. Keep a format-level test fixture so a library or version upgrade is checked against the exact creative types your team publishes.

How are creatives connected to ads and line items?
Creating a creative does not, by itself, make it deliver. The association step uses the ad or line-item workflow documented for the campaign structure. The API reference lists ad groups and ad group ads in addition to creatives, so an implementation may need to create or update those structures before a creative is eligible for the intended delivery path.
Record the association as its own state transition: creative created, ad structure found or created, creative attached, and read-back verified. This makes troubleshooting easier when a creative exists in the advertiser but is not connected to the expected line item. It also allows a later PATCH to change the association without recreating the creative asset.
Should you use REST calls, client libraries, or Structured Data Files?
Choose based on the type of work and how much request handling you want to own. Google recommends client libraries for supported languages; REST offers direct control, while Structured Data Files (SDFs) are worth evaluating for repeatable bulk changes.
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Google client library | Application code that benefits from language integration and less manual HTTP and authorization work. | Use the library supported for your language and API version; early-stage libraries are listed for Go, Node.js, and Ruby. |
| Direct REST | Workflows that need direct control over HTTP requests to the API endpoint. | You handle more of the request and authentication integration yourself. |
| Structured Data Files | Repeatable bulk operations where managing many individual REST mutations is inconvenient. | Evaluate SDF support for the specific changes you need; it is an alternative for supported bulk workflows, not a replacement for every API operation. |
Client libraries reduce manual HTTP and authentication plumbing, but they do not decide which advertiser, version, or resource to mutate. REST can be useful for a narrow integration or for inspecting the exact request sent to the endpoint, provided your team owns token handling and error processing. SDFs can make repeatable bulk edits easier to review and rerun, but first confirm that the files support the resource types and changes in your plan.
For a small number of changes that need fine-grained control, individual resource calls may be easier to reason about. For a recurring batch, assess whether SDFs support the resources and changes involved before building a large sequence of individual mutations.
What does a maintainable create-and-update cycle look like?
- Discover. List or retrieve the advertiser’s existing campaigns and creatives before creating anything.
- Plan. Resolve the parent-child IDs and desired settings in an internal change plan.
- Mutate one resource at a time. Create the campaign, then the delivery structure, targeting, assets, creative, and ad associations required by the plan.
- Persist responses. Store every successful ID with its advertiser and parent context immediately.
- Verify. Use GET or LIST calls to compare the resulting state with the intended plan.
- Patch deliberately. Change only the resource and fields that need adjustment, then read it back.
- Retire carefully. Treat DELETE as an irreversible operation and require an explicit confirmation path.
This cycle also supports reconciliation jobs. A periodic read can identify a campaign that exists without its expected line item, a creative that is not associated with an ad, or an ID stored under the wrong advertiser. Fix the smallest missing link instead of recreating the entire hierarchy.
How can you make the integration safer to operate?
Use read operations to establish what exists before writing, keep identifiers tied to the correct advertiser, and distinguish reversible updates from permanent deletion. A production workflow should make the target resource and intended change clear before issuing mutations.
- Validate authorization and scope. Confirm the authenticated profile has access to the advertiser and that the OAuth scope fits the method.
- Make retries deliberate. Retain advertiser and resource identifiers, and check for an existing resource before retrying a create operation.
- Separate resource responsibilities. Track campaign, insertion order, line item, targeting, creative, and ad resources independently; a successful campaign call does not prove that the rest of the setup exists.
- Use PATCH for targeted changes. Read the current resource and verify the intended result after an update.
- Protect delete operations. Campaign deletion is permanent. Confirm the advertiser and campaign IDs before sending a delete request, and apply similar care when deleting creatives.
- Plan version changes. Pin the API version in use and test upgrades against the resources and methods your application depends on.
- Log context, not secrets. Capture the API version, method, advertiser ID, parent resource IDs, and request outcome for diagnosis, while keeping OAuth credentials out of logs.
- Make create jobs restartable. A failed dependent step should resume from stored IDs rather than rerun every POST.
The available reference does not provide a performance, adoption, or success statistic that would support a throughput estimate. Do not build capacity assumptions from invented figures; consult current Google guidance for operational limits relevant to your account and workload. Likewise, no fixed API price is established in the endpoint material. Confirm any Google Cloud, DV360, media, or service-provider charges in the commercial terms that apply to your account instead of assuming that API calls are free or billed at a particular rate.

Using a beta version without a migration plan
v5 is identified as beta. Pin it, test the exact resources you use, and monitor migration guidance. Do not silently switch a production URL from v4 to v5.
Assuming one POST creates a campaign that can deliver
Campaign, insertion order, line item, targeting, creative, asset, and ad resources have distinct responsibilities. Verify each layer and its associations.
Reusing a creative payload across formats
Required fields vary by creative type. Start from the current schema and format-specific task guide for every new format.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsRetrying blindly after a timeout
The server may have completed a create even when the client did not receive the response. List or retrieve the advertiser’s resources and compare stored identifiers before issuing another POST.
Deleting to correct a small mistake
Use PATCH for controlled corrections. Campaign deletion is permanent, and creative deletion should receive the same deliberate review.
Frequently asked implementation questions
Use these answers as a pre-deployment checklist, then confirm the exact behavior in the current resource and task documentation for your selected API version.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a campaign be created without an insertion order or line item?
The campaign endpoint creates the campaign resource, while insertion orders and line items are separate resource types. Whether a campaign is usable for a particular delivery plan depends on the rest of that plan’s required configuration. Plan and verify those dependent resources instead of treating campaign creation as a complete media setup.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
What permissions does the integration need?
The Google account needs a DV360 user profile that can access the relevant partner or advertiser. Google’s quickstart identifies Admin, Standard, or Read only permissions; choose the level that matches the operations your application performs. OAuth credentials alone do not grant advertiser access.
Which OAuth scope should I request?
Use the DV360 API scope required by the method you are calling and follow Google’s current authorization guidance. Do not assume that a scope used for read operations is sufficient for every write operation.
Best Value
Is v5 safe for production?
The v5 reference identifies v5 as beta. Pin the version, test every resource and workflow you depend on, and monitor Google’s migration guidance before adopting it for production.
Does creating a creative make it deliver?
No. Create or upload the advertiser-scoped creative and required assets, then associate the creative through the documented ad or line-item workflow. Read back the creative and association to verify the connection.
Can I reuse one creative for multiple advertisers?
The creative endpoints shown are advertiser-scoped, and this information does not establish cross-advertiser reuse behavior. Check the current creative and association documentation for the format and advertiser setup you intend to use.
Should I use a client library or REST?
Google recommends client libraries for supported languages because they provide language integration and reduce manual HTTP and authorization work. Direct REST is reasonable when you need direct endpoint control and are prepared to handle authentication and request details yourself.
When are Structured Data Files a better option?
Evaluate SDFs for supported, repeatable bulk changes where issuing many individual REST mutations would be cumbersome. Confirm that the required resource types and changes are supported; SDFs are not a universal replacement for the API.
What should I do if a create request times out?
A timeout alone does not tell you whether the server created the resource. Before retrying, list or retrieve resources for the relevant advertiser and check your stored identifiers so the retry does not create a duplicate.
Does the API reference establish campaign or creative quotas or prices?
No quota or price figure is established in the endpoint information summarized here. Check Google’s current operational and commercial guidance for limits, cloud charges, media costs, and any account-specific terms before planning high-volume work.
The Bottom Line
The dependable DV360 API pattern is discover, create, associate, and verify: authorize a user who can access the advertiser, pin and test an API version, create the campaign and its insertion-order and line-item structure, assign targeting, upload assets, create and associate creatives, then maintain each resource with GET, LIST, PATCH, and carefully reviewed DELETE calls. Keep IDs and advertiser context durable, make retries idempotent in practice, and use Structured Data Files when a supported bulk workflow is more maintainable than many individual mutations.
