Steam Cloud saves can keep supported game files in sync between devices, but they are not a guaranteed backup of every RPG save. Check support for each game, enable synchronization, and make a separate copy of the game’s actual save folder before you replace or restore files. If Steam reports a sync conflict, compare the local and cloud versions—and your progress on each device—before choosing one.

What does Steam Cloud save, and what does it not guarantee?

Steam Cloud is a per-game feature. Developers decide whether a game uses it and which files it synchronizes; a game’s presence in Steam does not mean its saves are automatically covered. Steam Support explains that developers can customize how Cloud is used, including which user files are uploaded. The Steam Cloud indicator on a game’s Store page is a useful first check, but consult the developer’s instructions if you need to know exactly which saves or settings are included.

Steam’s system can support synchronization across operating systems, but the game must implement cross-platform support. Do not infer that a save will move between Windows, macOS, or Linux just because Steam Cloud is available. Check the game developer’s documentation for compatibility between the specific platforms you use.

For important RPG progress, treat Cloud synchronization and an independent manual copy as separate protections. Cloud is convenient when a title supports it, while a manual copy gives you a version you retain outside that sync process. Neither approach makes it safe to overwrite files without checking which version contains the progress you want.

How do I check whether a game supports Steam Cloud?

Start with the game’s Steam Store page and look for the Steam Cloud logo or feature indicator. Then check the game developer’s support information if you need confirmation about save coverage, cross-platform behavior, or file locations.

  1. Open the game’s Store page in Steam and look for the Steam Cloud indicator.
  2. Review the developer’s support page or instructions for the title, especially if the question is whether particular save files are included.
  3. In the Steam client, open Steam > Settings > Cloud and check that Cloud synchronization is enabled globally.
  4. In your Library, right-click the game and choose Properties > General. Check the game’s Cloud Synchronization setting.
  5. After changing a setting, allow Steam to finish syncing before you launch the game or switch to another computer.

Turning off Cloud synchronization for a game does not transfer progress elsewhere: Steam Support says the progress remains local on the machine where it was made. If you disable Cloud as part of a restore, keep track of which device contains the save you intend to keep.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There are two separate checks here: whether the game supports Steam Cloud at all, and whether the particular files you care about are included. The Store page indicator helps answer the first question, but it does not identify every save slot, configuration file, or platform-specific file covered. If the developer’s page is unclear, do not assume that a character save or mod-related file is synchronized; verify with the game’s support guidance before relying on it.

Where are Steam Cloud files stored on my computer?

Steam Support lists these default local folders for Steam Cloud files. Inside userdata, Steam organizes data into account folders and then game folders identified by appID, a numeric identifier for a title. Steam gives Dota 2, appID 570, as an example.

Operating system Default Steam Cloud folder
Windows C:Program Files (x86)Steamuserdata
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata
Linux ~/.local/share/Steam/userdata

These are default locations for Steam’s local Cloud data, not universal paths to every game’s active save files. A game can store its working saves elsewhere, use a developer-configured Cloud location, or not use Steam Cloud for saves at all. Do not assume that copying a folder under userdata captures all of a game’s progress.

How to inspect the Steam Cloud folder

  1. Open the operating system’s file browser and navigate to the relevant userdata path from the table.
  2. Open the account folder associated with the Steam account you use for the game.
  3. Look for the game’s appID folder. If you do not know the appID, use Steam’s game information or the developer’s support instructions rather than guessing.
  4. Before moving or replacing anything, copy the files you find to a separate location and confirm that the copy is intact.

Folder contents can help you locate Cloud data, but the developer’s directions are the better guide to the live save location and which files matter.

The account folder and appID are useful clues, not a guarantee that a folder is the one you should restore. If you have multiple Steam accounts, make sure you are looking under the account that played the game. The appID identifies the Steam title, while the save’s internal structure and active location are determined by the game. A folder may contain Cloud-managed files without being the only place the game keeps its current save.

How do I make a separate backup of an RPG save?

Find the actual save folder using the game developer’s instructions, then copy it to a different location before you modify, move, or restore any files. A separate copy—such as one kept on an external drive—can preserve a known version independently of Steam’s synchronization.

  1. Identify the title-specific save location. Check the developer’s support page for your operating system and Cloud configuration. Do not assume another game’s folder layout applies.
  2. Close the game. Avoid copying files while the game may still be writing progress. If Steam is syncing, let that operation finish before you proceed.
  3. Copy the complete save folder. Preserve the original folder structure and copy the files to a separate location, such as another drive or a clearly named backup folder.
  4. Label the copy. Include the game, date, and device in the folder name or a note so you can distinguish it from later versions.
  5. Verify before relying on it. Confirm that the copied folder contains the expected files and that the copy completed. Keep the original unchanged until you have checked that the backup is usable.
  6. Restore cautiously. Preserve the current save folder first, then follow the developer’s restoration instructions. Check the recovered progress in-game before removing any older copy.

A manual backup is only useful if it is the right folder and remains separate from the files being changed. Cloud synchronization is not a substitute for keeping that independent copy when the save matters to you.

Keep the backup outside the game’s active save folder and, if possible, outside the Steam Cloud folder too. Otherwise, the game or synchronization process may change the copy along with the active files. An external hard drive or SSD is one option for maintaining a separate copy; there is no particular model or capacity required for save files. The important point is that the copy remains available if the active save is overwritten, corrupted, or synchronized from another device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep more than one dated copy if you are about to do something risky, such as a manual restore or a game update that the developer says may affect saves. A single backup can itself be stale or incomplete. Naming copies with a date and the source device makes it easier to identify which version you preserved. Do not delete the old version immediately after restoring: first load the game and confirm the expected character and progress are present.

Why the exact instructions matter: two game-specific examples

Klei’s guidance for Don’t Starve illustrates how the location can depend on Cloud configuration. For the Cloud-enabled case described in its instructions, the path is Steamuserdata[Steam ID]219740remote. Klei also describes a Documents location for a workaround that disables Cloud. Those locations and that workaround apply to the title and configuration described by Klei; they are not general Steam save paths.

Dead Cells’ official Steam community instructions describe a different recovery process: turn off Cloud during restoration, use the game’s local save folder and its dated backup archives, check the recovered files in-game, and only then consider turning Cloud back on. Follow that title-specific process only for the versions and files it covers. Other games may have different save formats, folders, or recovery steps.

These examples are a reminder to follow the game’s own sequence, not just copy a path from another title. In particular, a Cloud toggle can change which copy is active or synchronized. When instructions tell you to disable Cloud temporarily, retain a separate copy first and do not turn synchronization back on until you have checked that the restored files load as expected.

How do I resolve a Steam Cloud conflict safely?

A conflict means Steam found different local and cloud copies. Before selecting one, compare the timestamps and consider what you played—and where—since the versions diverged. Choosing a version can overwrite the other, so make a separate copy of the relevant local files first if you can.

  1. Pause before launching the game. If Steam reports a sync failure, address it before opening the game where possible. Steam Support advises fixing the underlying cause before launching.
  2. Compare the available versions. Use the timestamps shown by Steam and your memory of the last session on each device. A timestamp is one clue; match it against the actual progress you made.
  3. Preserve a local copy. If you can access the files, copy the existing save folder somewhere separate before choosing a version or restoring anything.
  4. Select the version that matches the progress you want. Read Steam’s conflict prompt carefully; keeping one version may replace the other.
  5. Wait for synchronization to finish. Check Steam’s sync status before launching the game or switching devices.
  6. Verify in-game. Load the save and confirm that the expected character, location, quest state, or other progress is present before deleting any backup.

Offline Mode delays synchronization until the device is online again. If you played offline on one device while another device also changed the save, the versions may differ when Steam reconnects. Compare the progress on both devices rather than assuming the cloud copy is necessarily the newest one.

For example, if you finished a quest on a desktop, then later played an older save on a laptop while offline, a newer timestamp alone may not tell you which copy has the progress you want. Think through what happened on each machine and check the game itself where possible. A conflict is not an instruction to select the Cloud version automatically; it is a choice between divergent files.

If Steam keeps reporting a sync failure, do not repeatedly launch the game and make further changes while unsure which copy is authoritative. Note the error, address the underlying sync issue, and preserve any accessible local save before trying a restore. If Steam is offline or has not completed synchronization, wait until the client is online and the status is clear before starting the game on another device.

What should I do if my RPG progress is missing?

First check whether the game supports Cloud saves and whether the device that still has the desired progress is available. A failed upload or an older version previously uploaded to Cloud can explain why another computer has different progress.

  • If the old computer still has the save: start Steam on that computer and attempt synchronization. Confirm which version contains the progress you want before resolving any prompt.
  • If the game does not use Cloud saves: consult the game developer for the correct transfer procedure and save location.
  • If Steam shows a sync error: address that error before launching, when possible, to avoid creating another divergence.
  • If you have a separate backup: preserve the current files, then follow the developer’s restore steps and verify the result in-game.

Steam Support says it cannot recover lost saves. That makes it especially important to check the older device and any independent copies before replacing files on the machine that appears to be missing progress.

When checking the older device, avoid making unnecessary changes to its save before you have preserved it. If it contains the desired progress, start Steam there and allow it to attempt synchronization, watching for a conflict or error message. A previous Cloud upload may have been an older version, so compare the actual game progress rather than assuming the remote copy is correct. If the game has no Cloud save support, Steam cannot provide a universal transfer path: the developer’s instructions determine how to move that title’s files.

Is Steam Cloud or a manual backup better for RPG saves?

They protect against different problems. Steam Cloud synchronizes supported files for convenience; a manual backup gives you a separate copy you control. The right choice depends on the title’s Cloud support and whether you need a version that will not be changed by synchronization.

Consideration Steam Cloud Separate manual copy
Game support Depends on whether the developer uses Cloud and which files are configured. Can be made for a game with local save files, but you must identify the correct folder.
Keeping devices in sync Convenient for supported files when synchronization succeeds. Does not sync automatically; you must make and update copies yourself.
Independence from sync changes Local and remote versions can differ, creating a conflict that requires a choice. A separately stored copy can preserve a version outside that sync process.
Main risk Choosing one conflicting version may overwrite the other. Backing up the wrong folder, or failing to update the copy, can leave you without the version you need.

For a save you would not want to lose, use Cloud if the game supports it and keep a separate manual copy before risky file operations. The manual copy is not a replacement for checking synchronization status, and Cloud is not proof that every save file is covered.

Cloud is most useful when you want supported files to follow you between devices without manually copying them. A manual copy is useful when you want a point-in-time version that is not automatically replaced by another sync. The tradeoff is upkeep: you need to know the correct location and repeat the copy when you want a newer backup. A practical approach is to use both where available, but treat them as different layers rather than assuming one makes the other unnecessary.

What is Steam Cloud Auto-Cloud, and do players need to configure it?

Steamworks documentation describes two developer-side approaches: the Cloud API, which gives developers more control, and Auto-Cloud, which synchronizes configured file groups without requiring changes to the game’s code. These are implementation options for developers, not settings players choose when backing up an RPG.

As a player, use the Steam client’s Cloud settings and the game developer’s instructions. If a save is not appearing on another device, the implementation details may help explain why coverage varies by title, but they do not provide a universal recovery procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Steamworks also documents technical limits for developers: a single ISteamRemoteStorage::FileWrite or FileWriteStreamWriteChunk call has a maximum size of 100 MB, and files above 256 MB may use a non-optimal storage endpoint and transfer more slowly. These are implementation details, not player-facing backup requirements; they do not mean a player should split, edit, or reconfigure game saves. For players, the relevant steps remain checking the title’s Cloud support and following the game’s own file instructions.

What should I check before moving an RPG save to another computer?

Before transferring progress, establish which machine has the wanted save and how that title stores it. A short checklist reduces the chance of letting a stale version replace the save you meant to keep.

  • Check that the game supports Steam Cloud and whether the developer confirms the specific save files are included.
  • Confirm Cloud is enabled both globally and for the game, and wait for synchronization to finish on the source device.
  • Identify the actual save folder using the developer’s instructions; do not treat the Steam userdata directory as a universal active-save location.
  • Keep an independent copy before copying, restoring, or resolving a conflict.
  • On the destination device, check Steam’s sync status before launching and verify the expected progress in-game.

If the game lacks Cloud saves, use the developer’s transfer steps rather than assuming that copying a similarly named folder—or the entire Steam Cloud directory—will work.

For cross-platform transfers, verify both ends of the move. Steam’s Cloud system can support different operating systems, but the particular game must implement synchronization for the platforms you are using. A title may support Cloud on one platform without offering compatible save transfer to another. Confirm this before relying on a save to appear on a second system, and keep the source-device copy until the destination has loaded the expected progress.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Menu names, save locations, and Cloud behavior can change with game updates. If the developer’s current instructions differ from an older guide, follow the current title-specific steps. In particular, do not overwrite a destination save just because its folder looks similar: first preserve it, then confirm which version should be kept.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make a manual save backup without enabling Steam Cloud?

Yes. A manual copy depends on locating the game’s actual save folder and copying it separately; Steam Cloud is not required. Use the game developer’s directions to find the right files for your title and operating system.

Does Steam Cloud back up the whole RPG installation?

Steam Cloud is configured around files selected by the game developer, so it should not be treated as a full copy of the game installation. For details about what a particular title synchronizes, consult that game’s support information.

Can Steam Support restore a save that has been overwritten or lost?

Steam Support says it cannot recover lost save files. Before attempting a restore, check the older device and any separate copies you may have kept.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I use Steam Cloud to move an RPG save between Windows, macOS, and Linux?

Steam’s system supports cross-platform synchronization, but the specific game must implement it. Check the developer’s documentation for the operating systems you plan to use and keep a separate copy until the save loads correctly on the destination device.

Which version should I choose in a Steam Cloud conflict?

Compare the local and Cloud timestamps with what you played on each device. Choose the copy that contains the progress you want, and preserve an independent copy first if possible because selecting one version can overwrite the other.

Where is the appID folder, and is it the active save folder?

Steam Cloud data is commonly stored under userdata, with account and appID folders. That path is not a universal location for a game’s active saves; use the developer’s instructions to identify the files that title actually uses.

Should I leave Steam Cloud off after restoring a save?

Follow the game-specific restoration instructions. Some procedures, such as the Dead Cells guidance, call for Cloud to be off during restoration and for checking the recovered save before considering re-enabling it. Do not apply that sequence to another game without its developer’s instructions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Steam Cloud for convenience only when the game supports the files and platforms you need. Before resolving a conflict, transferring a save, or restoring an RPG, identify the title’s actual save folder and preserve an independent copy. Compare progress on each device, let Steam finish syncing, and verify the recovered save in-game before discarding older files.
