Connect Spotify through your AI assistant’s account-integration screen, approve the requested permissions, choose a Spotify Connect playback device, and then issue recommendation or playback commands. For a custom music agent, use Spotify’s OAuth 2.0 flow and official Web API or SDK controls with the narrowest scopes your feature needs.
Spotify’s April 23, 2026 Claude integration supports Free and Premium listeners for recommendations, previews, saves, playback in Claude, and opening results in Spotify. Premium adds mood- or vibe-based playlist requests in that integration. Playback requirements are different for custom API features, so check the exact assistant, endpoint, account region, and device before assuming Premium is necessary.

What can an AI assistant do with Spotify?
An approved integration can use your Spotify account to find music and podcasts, make recommendations, return artist or mood-focused playlists, preview results, save items, start playback, and open the result in Spotify. The exact actions are exposed by the assistant rather than guaranteed for every service.
Spotify’s current example is Claude. In its April 23, 2026 announcement, Spotify says Claude users can ask for podcasts, artist playlists, or mood-based tracks, then preview, save, play in Claude, or open the results in Spotify. This is account control, not a replacement music catalog. The assistant sends authorized requests to Spotify, while Spotify remains responsible for the catalog, playback rights, account plan, and connected-device session.
How do I connect Spotify to an AI assistant?
Use the assistant’s built-in connected-service flow. You should not give an assistant your Spotify password in a chat; the normal process redirects you to Spotify’s authorization page and returns an approved connection.

- Open integrations. In the assistant’s settings, find Integrations, Connected services, Apps, or a similarly named area.
- Select Spotify. Start the account-linking flow and wait for Spotify’s OAuth sign-in screen.
- Choose the intended account. If several Spotify accounts are available in the browser, verify the account name before approving. Review the permissions shown on the consent screen.
- Approve access. Grant only the permissions required for the assistant’s advertised functions. The assistant should return you to its settings with Spotify marked connected.
- Prepare a playback target. Open Spotify on the phone, computer, speaker, car system, or other supported device you want to use. In Spotify’s device picker, select that target. For a first-time speaker connection, Spotify says the devices must be on the same Wi-Fi network; its Spotify Connect help page explains the handoff process.
- Run a small test. Start with a search or recommendation, then try a simple playback command. Confirm that audio comes from the selected device before asking the assistant to switch devices or queue a longer session.
Which commands are useful for a first test?
- “Find the latest album by [artist].”
- “Recommend a podcast about [subject].”
- “Make a playlist for a quiet evening.”
- “Play this result on my living-room speaker.”
- “Pause,” “resume,” or “skip.”
- “Show my available Spotify devices,” followed by a request to move playback to one of them.
Natural-language wording varies by assistant. If a command is not recognized, restate it as one action—find, preview, save, play, pause, skip, or transfer—rather than combining several unrelated requests.
Can Claude play my Spotify playlists?
Yes. Spotify’s announced Claude integration can return Spotify results, let you preview or save them, play within Claude, and open them in Spotify. It can also view, switch, and control Spotify Connect devices.
Spotify explicitly says both Free and Premium listeners can use the integration. Premium listeners additionally get requests that describe a vibe or mood for a tailored playlist in Claude. That distinction applies to Spotify’s announced Claude experience; it does not make Premium a universal requirement for every assistant, API endpoint, or country.

When Claude appears unable to play a result, check three separate layers: the Spotify account connection, the selected Connect device, and the account’s playback rights. A successful recommendation request does not prove that the current device can accept remote playback.
How does Spotify Connect move playback between devices?
Spotify Connect is the device-discovery and remote-control layer. The assistant can ask Spotify which playback targets are available, select one, and issue control commands while Spotify handles the audio session. Spotify describes its service as available across more than 2,000 devices; that is Spotify’s own product-description figure, not an independent market measurement.
Connect-compatible hardware can include phones, computers, speakers, car systems, and other supported products. Availability depends on the device’s Spotify support, firmware, network visibility, and the account session. A device may appear in Spotify but still reject a particular command because it is restricted, offline, already controlled elsewhere, or unable to perform that operation.
What should I check when a device is missing?
- Close and reopen Spotify on both the controller and the intended playback device.
- Restart the playback device and install pending Spotify or firmware updates.
- For initial speaker setup, put the controller and speaker on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Check the operating system’s local-network permission for Spotify and the assistant.
- Verify that you authorized the correct Spotify account and that it is not still logged in on an unfamiliar device.
- Try selecting the device directly in Spotify. If it is absent there, the assistant cannot make it appear through a chat command.
Bluetooth is a separate path from Connect. A product may accept Bluetooth audio without exposing a Spotify Connect target, while a Connect target can be controlled over the network without the phone acting as the audio source. Compare the two modes before choosing hardware for an agent.
How do I build a custom AI music agent for Spotify?
Build the agent as a permissioned control layer: the language model interprets the user’s request, your server calls Spotify’s authorized APIs, and Spotify’s Connect session performs playback. Use Spotify’s official OAuth 2.0 flow and Web API or SDK interfaces rather than scraping the app or simulating private endpoints.

- Create an application and redirect flow. Register your agent with Spotify, configure an exact redirect URI, and send each user through Spotify’s authorization flow. Spotify’s account tutorial is at developer.spotify.com/documentation/open-access/tutorials/account.
- Request least-privilege scopes. Ask for
user-read-playback-statewhen the agent needs current playback or device state. Adduser-modify-playback-statewhen it must pause, resume, skip, transfer, or otherwise control playback. Request library or playlist scopes only when a feature genuinely reads or changes those resources. Spotify lists the available permissions in its Web API scopes reference. - Exchange authorization for tokens. Keep access and refresh tokens on your server, not in prompts or client-side logs. Treat an expired, revoked, or rejected token as a normal account state and send the user back through authorization when needed.
- Discover devices before acting. Call
GET /me/player/devicesand inspect the returned device list before issuing a transfer or playback request. The available-devices reference documents this operation. - Select a target deliberately. Match the user’s requested room or device to an available target. If the user has not specified one, report the choices and ask which target to use instead of silently moving playback.
- Call the narrowest playback operation. Use the documented playback endpoints for pause, resume, skip, transfer, or starting a context. Spotify’s Start/Resume Playback reference describes the operation and its requirements.
- Translate results back into plain language. Tell the user whether the action succeeded, which device was targeted, and whether Spotify returned a restriction or unavailable-device condition. Do not claim that audio started merely because an API request was sent.
- Handle change and failure. Devices can disappear, accounts can revoke access, tokens can expire, and Spotify can change platform rules. Retry only safe, idempotent reads; ask for a new target or authorization when the user’s state has changed.
What should the agent’s command layer look like?
Keep the model’s tool set small and explicit. A practical set is: search or recommend, read playback state, list devices, transfer playback, pause or resume, skip, and save. Each tool should validate the account identity, required scope, target device, and request parameters before calling Spotify.
Separate discovery from control. A request such as “play something upbeat in the kitchen” requires the agent to resolve music first, inspect available devices, identify the kitchen target, and then perform playback. If any step is ambiguous, return a question rather than guessing. This prevents an agent from moving an active session to the wrong room or account.
Do I need Spotify Premium for AI playback?
No single Premium rule covers every AI integration. Spotify’s Claude announcement allows both Free and Premium listeners to use that integration, while specific developer playback features have stricter requirements.

Plan availability and feature rollout can vary by region and assistant version. State the requirement for the exact operation you are implementing, then direct users to Spotify’s current plan information rather than promising that a Free account can perform a developer-controlled stream.
Which Spotify permissions should a custom agent request?
Start with the smallest scope that satisfies the feature and add permissions only when the user enables a corresponding function. A recommendation-only agent should not request playback-control or playlist-editing access merely because those scopes exist.

Explain permissions in user-facing language before authorization. “Control playback on your Spotify account” is more useful than presenting a list of scope identifiers without context. Store tokens securely, restrict access inside your application, and provide a visible disconnect or revoke path.

Account linking grants the assistant or agent whatever permissions the user approves. A service that reads playback state can learn what is currently playing; recommendation features may use listening history or saved items to personalize results. Do not request or retain those data beyond the feature’s purpose.
Spotify states: “You control whether Spotify is connected, and you can disconnect whenever you like.” Use the assistant’s connected-services settings to disconnect, and use Spotify’s account-authorized-app controls when you need to revoke access at the account level. After revocation, clear cached tokens and show the user that the agent can no longer act until authorization is completed again.

For shared speakers or cars, consider who can invoke the assistant and which Spotify account is linked. A device that is physically accessible to several people can still be tied to one person’s account and listening history.
What are the legal and technical limits for a Spotify music agent?
Spotify’s API reference says the platform cannot be used to develop commercial streaming integrations. Do not use an agent to build a paid replacement for Spotify, scrape or redistribute audio, alter Spotify content, synchronize recordings with video, or imply that Spotify endorses your product.
Use official authorization and documented endpoints, respect account and regional restrictions, and stop when Spotify returns an unavailable or restricted device. Never work around a playback block by extracting audio from the client. If a policy or endpoint changes, update the agent and communicate the limitation instead of silently attempting an unsupported path.
How should I compare assistants, agents, and playback hardware?
Compare the complete workflow rather than judging an assistant only by how natural its recommendations sound. The right choice depends on the actions you need, the account plan, the devices in your home or car, and how much control you want over permissions and failure handling.

For hardware, compare Spotify Connect support, microphone quality if voice commands matter, network behavior, Bluetooth support, and firmware maintenance. A loud speaker with poor network discovery can be a worse agent target than a smaller device that consistently appears in Connect.
How do I troubleshoot an AI command that fails?
Identify which layer failed before changing settings. The assistant may have misunderstood the request, Spotify may have rejected authorization, Connect may not see the target, or the target may be unable to perform the requested operation.
The assistant cannot find Spotify
- Confirm that Spotify is offered in the assistant’s current integrations list and region.
- Open the integration settings and reconnect through Spotify’s authorization page.
- Check that the browser authenticated the intended Spotify account rather than a stale session.
The assistant finds music but cannot start playback
- Open Spotify directly and verify that the account can play the selected item.
- Check whether a Connect device is available and selected.

Why does Spotify ask me to authorize the assistant again?
The access token may have expired, been revoked, or no longer include a scope required by the requested action. Disconnect the stale connection, start the assistant’s Spotify linking flow again, and review the new permission request.
Can I connect more than one Spotify account to the same assistant?
Most integrations keep one active Spotify authorization per assistant profile or workspace. To change accounts, disconnect the current connection, sign out of Spotify in the authorization browser if necessary, and link the desired account.
Will disconnecting Spotify stop playback on my speakers?
Disconnecting removes the assistant or agent’s authorized access; it does not inherently disable Spotify Connect or manual playback in the Spotify app. Any active audio session can continue until you pause it or close Spotify, subject to the device and account session.
