RTX Remix for Minecraft is a beta Fabric mod that integrates the RTX Remix renderer into Minecraft: Java Edition 1.21.1. It is not installed like a conventional DirectX game mod: the project supplies an installer that configures Java 21, Fabric and the RTX Remix runtime for you. You need Windows 10 or 11, an account that owns Java Edition, a GeForce RTX 30-series or newer GPU, NVIDIA driver 616.92 or newer, an internet connection during setup and about 5 GB of temporary free space. Sixteen gigabytes of system memory is recommended.
The safest route is to extract the project archive, run install.bat as a normal user, choose Prism Launcher or Microsoft Launcher, sign in, and start the profile named NVIDIA RTX Remix for Minecraft. Prism is the recommended choice because it keeps the modded instance, worlds and settings separate from your usual game. Expect a long first launch and shader-compilation period before judging the image.

What exactly is RTX Remix for Minecraft Java Edition?
This project is a Minecraft-specific Fabric integration of the RTX Remix runtime. The documented target is Java Edition 1.21.1; it is not a general-purpose installer for every Minecraft release. The project describes newer-version ports as work for the community, so installing it on another version is outside the supported instructions. See the project repository for the current release and status.
RTX Remix changes how supported scene data is rendered and uses physically based resource data where available. That is different from dropping a normal shader pack into Minecraft. The installer and Fabric mod provide the bridge needed by this project; you should not follow generic RTX Remix instructions for DirectX 8 or 9 games and attempt to inject the runtime manually.

The release is explicitly a beta. It was tuned around a showcase world built for the project, so the visual result and performance can vary substantially in other biomes, dimensions, blocks, mobs and situations.

Check every requirement before downloading. The figures below are prerequisites from the project documentation, not performance guarantees or benchmark results.

The project does not publish a minimum frame rate, a recommended resolution or a universal performance target. A qualifying graphics card therefore means that the software can meet the stated hardware prerequisite; it does not predict how fast a particular world will run.
Which launcher should you choose?
The installer supports Prism Launcher and Microsoft Launcher. Both can start the RTX Remix profile, but they place the files differently. Prism is the project’s recommended option when you want a contained test installation.

If you regularly play important survival worlds, the isolated Prism instance reduces the chance that testing changes your everyday profile. If you choose Microsoft Launcher, pay attention to which profile you start: the RTX Remix profile and your standard Java profile use the same game folder.

Use the installer route unless you have a specific reason to maintain Fabric files yourself. The project’s playing guide documents the following sequence.
- Download the release archive. Save the archive from the project’s release page rather than attempting to assemble individual runtime files.
- Extract the entire archive. Choose an ordinary folder and let extraction finish. Running
install.batwhile it is still inside the ZIP does not work because the installer must access and unpack files beside it. - Run the installer as a normal user. Double-click
install.bat; do not use “Run as administrator” unless Windows itself requires a permission change. Administrative execution can place files under a different user context from the launcher you normally use. - Select Install. Follow the prompts until the launcher choice appears. The installer sets up Java 21, Fabric and the RTX Remix runtime for the selected Minecraft installation.
- Choose Prism Launcher or Microsoft Launcher. Select the launcher you intend to use for this profile. If you switch launchers later, run the installer again and choose the appropriate option rather than copying random files between installations.
- Sign in with the owning Microsoft account. Use the account that has a Java Edition license. An account that can open the launcher but does not own Java Edition cannot complete a valid game launch.
- Start the generated profile. In Prism, launch the instance named NVIDIA RTX Remix for Minecraft. In Microsoft Launcher, open Minecraft: Java Edition, select the profile named NVIDIA RTX Remix for Minecraft, and choose Play.
Keep the extracted release folder until you have successfully launched the profile. It gives you the files needed to repeat an upgrade or inspect the supplied mods directory if troubleshooting becomes necessary.
What should I expect on the first launch?
A first launch is deliberately slower than a normal Minecraft start. The mod unpacks the RTX Remix runtime before the game window appears. Once you enter a world, the renderer compiles shaders; during that phase the scene can be dark, flat, empty or only partly built.
- Start the generated profile and wait for the game window instead of launching it repeatedly.
- Enter a world after the title screen appears.
- Allow shader compilation to finish. Do not evaluate the final lighting or materials while the world is still being populated.
- Only after compilation settles should you decide whether a texture, lighting or performance problem remains.
The compilation delay is expected on a new version or installation. Repeatedly closing the game during this stage can make it harder to tell an ordinary first-run delay from a genuine initialization failure.

How can I install it manually with Fabric?
Manual installation is available for players who manage their own Fabric instances, but the project warns that its installer does not maintain these installations. You will be responsible for replacing the mod JAR during updates and deleting the files it unpacked during removal.

Manual installation steps
- Create or select a Fabric 1.21.1 instance that uses Java 21.
- Install Fabric Loader 0.16.5 or newer and Fabric API 0.116.10+1.21.1 or newer in that instance.
- Extract the RTX Remix for Minecraft archive fully.
- Copy the project’s mod JAR from the archive’s
modsfolder into the instance’s ownmodsfolder. - Launch that Fabric instance and allow the same runtime-unpacking and shader-compilation process described above.
Do not assume that deleting the JAR alone is a complete uninstall. The manual route can leave unpacked runtime files behind, and the guide places responsibility for identifying and removing those files on the person maintaining the instance.

What should I do if the game closes or the image looks wrong?
Troubleshoot only after allowing the first-run unpacking and shader compilation to finish. The common symptoms below have different remedies.
The game closes because the driver is too old
Install an NVIDIA driver at version 616.92 or newer, then restart Windows and try the RTX Remix profile again. The project lists that driver level as a prerequisite; changing resource packs will not compensate for an outdated driver.
The scene is dark, flat or incomplete immediately after entering a world
Wait for shader compilation. A temporarily dark or half-built scene is documented behavior during this stage. If the appearance remains wrong after compilation completes, continue with the resource-pack check below.
Blocks look flat or plastic
Disable additional resource packs and relaunch or reload the world to test the baseline assets. A pack can override the project’s physically based textures or their sidecar files, producing materials that do not look as intended. Re-enable packs one at a time only after the baseline image is working.
RTX Remix renderer initialization fails
Open Minecraft’s logs/latest.log and find the error immediately following Failed to initialize RTX Remix renderer. That line is the useful diagnostic detail to use when isolating a driver, dependency or conflicting-mod problem; the project does not prescribe a single fix for every initialization error.
Another mod causes crashes, missing chunks or visual glitches
Temporarily remove other mods and test the RTX Remix profile by itself. Testing alongside other mods has been limited, and mods that change rendering or chunk loading are especially likely to conflict.

How do I update an existing installation?
Download and fully extract the newer release archive, then run its install.bat from the extracted folder. The installer preselects Upgrade. Follow the launcher prompts and start the same RTX Remix profile after the process completes.
The guide says that worlds, settings and edited lighting profiles are retained during an upgrade. Even so, close Minecraft and the launcher before upgrading so that files are not locked while the installer replaces them. Manual Fabric installations do not receive this automatic maintenance; replace the mod JAR and any accompanying files yourself according to the new archive.
How do I uninstall RTX Remix without deleting my worlds?
Run the installer from the extracted release archive and choose Uninstall. The basic uninstall leaves worlds and authored lighting profiles in place. The installer also offers optional cleanup for an installed Prism instance or portable launcher; that cleanup removes everything in those directories, including worlds and authored profiles.
Read the cleanup prompt carefully before confirming. Choose the basic uninstall when you want to return to a cleaner game setup but retain your saved worlds and lighting work. Choose full directory cleanup only when you have deliberately copied anything you want to keep elsewhere.
What limitations should I expect from the beta?
The project’s visual tuning centered on one showcase world created for it by BlockWorks. Areas outside that showcase received less attention, so blocks, mobs, dimensions and unusual situations can look incorrect or run slowly. The project does not promise consistent behavior across every Minecraft scene.

- World scope: a showcase-optimized scene is a better indication of intended results than an arbitrary custom world.

These limitations do not mean the installation is broken. They describe the boundary between a beta demonstration and a general-purpose replacement renderer.

NVIDIA’s general RTX Remix documentation describes a runtime aimed at older DirectX 8 and DirectX 9 games that use fixed-function graphics pipelines, and it notes that OpenGL is not directly supported. The Minecraft project is a separate Fabric integration documented specifically for Java Edition 1.21.1. Therefore, a compatibility statement on the general platform page should not be treated as a Minecraft installation recipe.

Is this suitable for a regular Minecraft world?
Use Prism when you want to experiment without merging the beta profile into your everyday installation. Start with a non-critical world or a copy, because the project is still beta software and the Microsoft Launcher route shares the ordinary game folder. If your priority is a predictable, broadly compatible Minecraft setup, keep your normal profile separate and treat RTX Remix as an experimental instance.
Java Edition mods are third-party software. Minecraft Help states that such mods are not created, reviewed or endorsed by Mojang Studios, may cause malfunctions or make the game unplayable, and fall outside Minecraft Support troubleshooting. Read the project instructions and retain a way to return to your normal launcher profile before making changes; the relevant support notice is available in Minecraft Help’s Java mod guidance.

What is the shortest reliable installation checklist?

- Confirm that the signed-in Microsoft account owns Java Edition and that the target version is 1.21.1.
