To use Ollama from several computers, run Ollama as a server on one computer and let the other computers send requests to that server over your network. Ollama listens only on 127.0.0.1:11434 by default, so you must set OLLAMA_HOST to a reachable address, restart Ollama, and point each client at the host computer’s API URL. This setup shares one host’s model service; it does not, according to Ollama’s documented instructions, split a single model across several computers or create a coordinated inference cluster.

The method works on a home or office LAN and can be placed behind a reverse proxy or tunnel for remote access. Treat the API as a network service: restrict who can reach it, understand whether requests use local or cloud models, and do not assume that changing the bind address supplies authentication or encryption.

What does “across multiple computers” mean in Ollama?

In Ollama’s documented multi-computer pattern, one machine is the server. It runs the Ollama process and has the model files and compute resources. Other machines are clients; they submit HTTP requests to the server’s network address instead of running inference locally. Ollama’s API introduction documents the local API base as http://localhost:11434/api and shows chat requests at /api/chat (official API introduction).

When a client is on another computer, replace localhost with the server’s reachable IP address or DNS name, for example http://192.168.1.20:11434/api. The client’s prompt travels to the host, the host performs the generation, and the response travels back. Ollama’s FAQ and API documentation do not describe distributing one model’s inference over multiple hosts, synchronizing several Ollama servers, or scheduling jobs as a cluster (official FAQ).

What do you need before connecting computers?

You need one continuously available host, a network path from each client to that host, and an Ollama installation on the host. Ollama publishes installers for macOS, Windows, and Linux and an official Docker image in its README (Ollama README).

  • Host computer: Install Ollama, start its server, and ensure the model you intend to use is available to that installation. The host’s CPU, GPU, memory, and storage determine the practical capacity; the supplied documentation does not establish a universal speed, concurrency, or hardware requirement.
  • Client computers: They need an HTTP-capable application, script, or command-line tool and a route to the host. A client does not need to run a second Ollama server merely to send API requests.
  • Network: Clients must be able to reach the host on the address and port you configure. Guest Wi-Fi, VLAN rules, host firewalls, and VPN policies can block this even when both computers appear to be on the same premises.
  • Administration access: Changing a system service, macOS launch environment, Windows environment variable, firewall, proxy, or tunnel may require administrator privileges.

Write down the host’s stable LAN address or DNS name before configuring clients. A DHCP address that changes later will make every saved client URL fail until it is updated.

Which Ollama network pattern should you choose?

Choose the narrowest pattern that meets your requirement. Ollama’s FAQ documents the default loopback binding, a network binding through OLLAMA_HOST, and reverse-proxy or tunnel approaches (official FAQ).

Pattern What it does Best fit Important trade-off
Local-only Ollama remains bound to 127.0.0.1:11434. Only applications on the host need access. Other computers cannot address the service directly.
LAN-accessible OLLAMA_HOST binds Ollama to a network-reachable address, then clients call the host address and port. Trusted home, lab, or office networks. Every device that can reach the port may be able to submit requests; local network policy and firewall rules matter.
Reverse proxy or tunnel A separate proxy or tunnel publishes the Ollama service through its own routing and access configuration. The FAQ gives an Nginx example and names ngrok and Cloudflare Tunnel as options. Remote users or networks that cannot route directly to the host. More components to configure and secure; the proxy or tunnel’s controls are separate from Ollama.

The official sources provide no comparative performance measurements for these patterns. A proxy or tunnel should therefore be selected for reachability and policy requirements, not because it is documented as faster.

How do you expose Ollama on a Linux LAN?

For a Linux installation managed by systemd, Ollama’s FAQ documents a service override that changes the bind address and then restarts the service.

  1. Open an override for the Ollama service:
    sudo systemctl edit ollama
  2. In the editor, add this section exactly:
    [Service]
    Environment="OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434"

The example listens on all host interfaces at port 11434. It is a bind setting, not an access-control policy.

  3. Save and close the override, then reload systemd’s unit definitions:
    sudo systemctl daemon-reload
  4. Restart Ollama so the new environment takes effect:
    sudo systemctl restart ollama
  5. Check your operating system’s firewall and local network policy. Permit the port only from the client network ranges that need it; do not equate a successful restart with a secure public service.

If Ollama was launched by another mechanism rather than the systemd service, apply OLLAMA_HOST in that launcher’s environment and restart that process. The variable has no effect on an already-running process until it is restarted.

How do you expose Ollama on macOS?

The FAQ instructs macOS app users to set OLLAMA_HOST through launchctl and restart the app (official FAQ). A typical user-session command is:

launchctl setenv OLLAMA_HOST "0.0.0.0:11434"
  1. Run the command in the user account that launches Ollama.
  2. Quit Ollama completely, including its menu-bar process if present.
  3. Start Ollama again so it inherits the new environment.
  4. Confirm that the Mac’s firewall and network profile allow intended client devices to reach port 11434.

If you use a launch agent, shell script, container, or another service manager instead of the desktop application, set the variable in that component’s environment. A setting made in one terminal session may not be inherited by a separately launched GUI application.

How do you expose Ollama on Windows?

On Windows, the FAQ says to set OLLAMA_HOST as a user or system environment variable and then restart the Ollama application (official FAQ).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings.
  2. Select Environment Variables.
  3. Add a user variable named OLLAMA_HOST with a value such as 0.0.0.0:11434. Use a system variable only if all relevant accounts and services should inherit it.
  4. Close and reopen Ollama. Existing processes do not acquire newly created environment variables automatically.
  5. Review Windows Defender Firewall rules and allow inbound traffic only for the networks and devices you intend to use.

The exact firewall dialog and policy options vary by Windows edition and organization. If a managed computer prevents the change, ask the administrator to apply the environment and firewall settings through the organization’s approved tools.

How do clients call the host’s Ollama API?

Use the host’s address in place of localhost. The API base is the host URL ending in /api; the chat endpoint is /api/chat (official API introduction).

  1. Find the host’s reachable name or address, such as ollama-host.example.lan or 192.168.1.20.
  2. Build the endpoint as http://HOST:11434/api/chat. Do not use localhost on the client unless the client and server are the same computer.
  3. Send a request with the model identifier and conversation messages. For example:
    curl http://192.168.1.20:11434/api/chat
      -d '{"model":"MODEL_NAME","messages":[{"role":"user","content":"Explain photosynthesis in three sentences."}]}'
  4. Replace MODEL_NAME with a model available on the host. Keep the host address in the client application’s configuration rather than hard-coding localhost.

If the request fails, first test name resolution and basic reachability from the client, then check the host service status and firewall. A connection refusal usually means the process is not listening on that interface or port; a timeout more often indicates routing or firewall filtering.

How can you use a reverse proxy or tunnel?

Ollama’s FAQ includes an Nginx reverse-proxy example and identifies ngrok and Cloudflare Tunnel as tunnel options (official FAQ). These components sit in front of Ollama and forward approved requests to the host’s Ollama endpoint.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Keep Ollama reachable on the interface and port required by the proxy or tunnel.
  2. Configure the proxy or tunnel using its current official documentation, including its hostname, upstream target, TLS behavior, identity checks, rate limits, and logging.
  3. Point clients at the proxy or tunnel URL rather than directly at port 11434.
  4. Test a harmless request from an authorized client and inspect proxy and Ollama logs for the complete path.

A tunnel can solve routing through NAT, but it does not automatically make the API safe. The tunnel provider’s account controls, exposed hostname, authentication, encryption, and billing or quota policies remain separate decisions. Do not publish an unprotected Ollama endpoint to the internet simply because a tunnel connects successfully.

What are the privacy implications of local and cloud models?

Ollama’s FAQ distinguishes local use from cloud-hosted model use. It says local use does not send prompts and answers to Ollama, while cloud model requests are processed by Ollama (official FAQ). A client reaching a local model over your LAN is still using the host computer’s Ollama process; the network hop between client and host does not turn that request into a cloud request.

If you want to disable cloud features, the FAQ documents either the environment variable OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 or the disable_ollama_cloud setting in ~/.ollama/server.json. Restart Ollama after changing the setting. Apply the option in the same service, app, or user context that launches the host process; setting it in an unrelated shell will not change an already-running server.

Network exposure is a separate privacy issue. The documented bind-address setting does not establish a complete authentication or authorization configuration. Limit the listening interface where practical, restrict firewall sources, use a controlled proxy for remote access, and avoid sending confidential prompts until you have verified who can reach the endpoint and where logs are retained.

What security controls should you add?

Changing OLLAMA_HOST changes where Ollama listens; it should not be treated as a security boundary. Before allowing multiple computers to use the service, make these checks part of the deployment:

  • Network scope: Prefer a private, segmented LAN or VPN over a public interface. Do not assume that an address such as 0.0.0.0 means “LAN only.”
  • Firewall allow-list: Permit port 11434 only from known client subnets or from the proxy host.
  • Proxy controls: If a proxy is used, configure its authentication, TLS certificates, request limits, and access logs according to that product’s current guidance.
  • Data handling: Decide whether prompts, generated answers, model names, and access logs may contain personal, confidential, or regulated information.
  • Lifecycle: Recheck the setting after Ollama upgrades, operating-system changes, address changes, and service-manager edits.

The official Ollama pages cited here do not promise a built-in, comprehensive access-control scheme for an exposed API. Your network administrator’s policy and the current Ollama documentation should govern any deployment beyond a trusted local network.

Why can’t another computer connect?

Diagnose the path in layers instead of changing several settings at once.

Ollama is still local-only

Check how Ollama is launched and confirm that OLLAMA_HOST was set in that launch context. Restart the service or app after every change. A systemd override does not affect a separately started desktop process, and a Windows or macOS environment change does not retroactively modify an existing process.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The host address is wrong

Use the host’s current LAN address or resolvable DNS name, not the client’s own loopback address. If DHCP changed the host address, update the client configuration or create a stable internal DNS or reservation according to your network policy.

A firewall or router blocks port 11434

Verify that the host firewall allows the intended source network and that the client’s VLAN, guest network, VPN, or router permits the route. A timeout generally points to filtering or routing; a prompt response from the wrong service indicates an address or port mistake.

The model request fails after connection

Separate transport from model availability. First establish that the client can reach the API endpoint; then verify that the requested model identifier exists on the host and that the host has enough resources to serve it. The supplied official pages do not define a universal concurrency limit or performance guarantee, so measure your own workload rather than assuming one.

A proxy or tunnel works intermittently

Inspect both sides: the proxy’s upstream address, tunnel status, DNS, TLS, idle timeouts, and access rules, plus Ollama’s service logs. Test the host directly from an authorized LAN client before debugging the extra proxy layer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can several clients use one Ollama host at the same time?

The server arrangement allows multiple computers to address the same host endpoint, but the cited documentation does not publish a guaranteed concurrency limit, queueing policy, throughput figure, or latency comparison. Real behavior depends on the model, host hardware, prompt sizes, generation lengths, and competing requests.

For a small team, start with one host, observe CPU, memory, GPU, storage, and response times, and establish a request policy in the client applications. If demand exceeds what one host can provide, you can deploy additional independent Ollama hosts and direct different clients or workloads to them, but the official instructions here do not document a shared scheduler, automatic failover, or cluster-wide model state.

What is the safe operating checklist?

  1. Select the host and install Ollama using the platform instructions in the official README.
  2. Leave the default 127.0.0.1:11434 binding in place if only local applications need access.
  3. For LAN clients, set OLLAMA_HOST in the correct Linux service, macOS launch environment, or Windows user/system environment.
  4. Restart Ollama and confirm the new process inherited the variable.
  5. Restrict the host firewall to intended client networks.
  6. From a client, replace localhost with the host address and call /api/chat.
  7. If remote access is required, put a suitably controlled reverse proxy or tunnel in front of Ollama rather than exposing the raw port indiscriminately.
  8. Choose local-only operation or disable cloud features when your data policy requires it, and restart after changing the cloud setting.
  9. Document the host address, port, launch method, firewall rule, proxy configuration, and recovery steps for whoever maintains the service.

This gives each computer a reliable way to use the host’s Ollama API while keeping the architectural boundary clear: it is network access to one server, not distributed inference across multiple computers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to install Ollama on every computer that will use the model?

No. In the server pattern, Ollama and the model service run on the host; client machines need only an HTTP-capable application or script and network access to the host endpoint. Install Ollama on additional computers only when you want those computers to act as separate hosts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can Ollama combine the GPUs or RAM of several computers for one model?

The documented network setup does not provide model sharding, shared memory, or distributed inference. Each request is handled by the Ollama server to which the client connects, so combining hardware would require a different system designed and documented for distributed execution.

Is it safe to expose port 11434 to the public internet?

The cited Ollama FAQ explains how to change the bind address but does not establish a complete authentication and authorization setup for an internet-facing API. Keep the service private or place it behind a separately secured proxy or VPN, and follow your administrator’s current access-control and TLS requirements.

What happens to existing clients if the host computer’s IP address changes?

Clients using the old literal address will stop reaching the server even though Ollama is still running. Give the host a stable DHCP reservation or internal DNS name where appropriate, then update client base URLs and any proxy upstream configuration.
