Meta Muse Image is Meta’s image-generation and editing model. To use it without code, open an available Meta AI surface, describe the image you want, review the result, then refine it with a follow-up prompt or the markup tool. You can also start from an existing photo or choose a suggested preset. Availability varies by product surface and location, so the feature may not appear in every Meta app or country.
What is Meta Muse Image, and how can you use it?
Muse Image is Meta’s model for creating and editing images through Meta AI experiences. A typical consumer workflow is conversational: describe a scene or provide a photo, inspect the generated result, and tell the system what to change. You can make a targeted edit by marking up part of the image or continue refining in the same conversation.

It is useful to think of Muse Image as both a generator and an editor. You can begin with a text description, start from an existing photo, combine visual references, clean up a background, explore a visual style, or develop a room-redesign concept. Meta describes these as supported examples, not as a promise that every request will be reproduced perfectly. Important details still need to be checked by a person.
There are two distinct ways to use it. Individual creators can work through available Meta AI app, web, or social features; developers can use the separate Meta Model API to generate and edit images programmatically. The API route involves technical integration and has its own pricing. It is not simply another screen in the consumer app.

What should you prepare before creating an image?
You do not need a special prompt syntax. A plain-language request is the starting point, but a few decisions make the first result easier to evaluate and refine:
- Choose the subject. Name the person, object, animal, or scene that must be present.
- Choose the setting. Describe the place, background, season, or time of day.
- Choose a visual direction. You can request a broad style such as watercolor, editorial still-life photography, or another visual treatment.
- Choose framing and light. Say whether the view should be close-up, wide, overhead, or eye-level, and mention useful lighting such as soft window light or sunrise.
- Decide whether to start from scratch or use an image. Meta says users can create a new image or work with an existing photo.
Keeping these choices separate helps you identify the one part that needs correction. If the scene is right but the background is wrong, you can change the background without restating every other requirement.

Start with a clear description of the subject and scene. Meta describes a conversational prompt workflow, and says users can create from scratch or work with an existing photo.
- Open an available Meta AI surface. Use the Meta AI app or meta.ai if available to you. Some Meta AI image features may also appear in other products, but the available controls depend on the surface and your location.
- Describe what you want to see. Include the subject, setting, visual style, and useful composition or lighting details. For example: “A small red canoe on a misty alpine lake at sunrise, viewed from the shore, soft watercolor style, wide composition.” This is an illustrative prompt, not a tested result or a required Meta format.
- Use a preset if you need a starting point. Meta says its presets can help people begin, with examples such as restoring an old family photo or trying a visual style. Pick one that is close to your goal, then explain what you want in the conversation.
- Provide an existing photo when that is the better starting point. A source image can give the system a concrete subject or composition to work from. State whether you want a correction, a style change, a new setting, or another specific transformation.
- Review the image before accepting it. Check that the subject, composition, and important details match your intent. If something is off, ask for a specific change rather than rewriting every part of the request.
- Download or share when ready. Meta says creations can be downloaded or shared to chat, story, or feed; the controls and destinations depend on the product surface you are using.
How to write a prompt that is easy to refine
A useful prompt pattern is subject + setting + visual style + composition or lighting. Keep the first request focused enough that you can tell what needs adjusting. If you have a particular framing in mind, say where the subject sits in the image or whether the view should be close-up, wide, overhead, or eye-level.
For example, start with: “A ceramic blue vase with yellow tulips on a kitchen table, morning window light, editorial still-life photography, vase centered with open space on the right.” If the result is close but the background is too busy, make the next request about that one issue. The example shows a practical way to express a request; it is not a claim that Muse Image will reproduce those details exactly.
Preservation language is useful during later turns. Phrases such as “keep the subject,” “preserve the framing,” or “change only the background” make the intended scope explicit. They do not guarantee pixel-level preservation, so inspect the revised image afterward.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →How do presets and existing photos fit into the workflow?
Presets are an on-ramp when you know the kind of transformation you want but do not yet have the wording. Meta gives restoring an old family photo and trying a visual style as examples. Select a suitable preset, then add the details that matter for your image rather than assuming the preset captures your full intent.
When starting with an existing photo, explain the role of the image. For example, identify whether it is the subject to preserve, a composition reference, or material to edit. If you combine several visual references, state which elements should come from each one. Meta describes image composition from multiple references, but its developer guidance warns that source elements may be rearranged or redrawn. A reference image is therefore guidance, not a guarantee of an unchanged assembly.

How do you refine an image without starting over?
Stay in the same conversation and ask for a narrow adjustment. Meta says the system retains conversational context, so you can request a different style, add an element, or tweak details without repeating the entire prompt. You can also use the markup icon to circle, sketch, or annotate the area you want changed.
Meta’s launch wording is direct: “To make a change, just tap the markup icon on your creation to circle, sketch, or annotate edits directly on top of the photo.” The exact control placement can differ by product surface.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Identify the mismatch. Decide whether the problem is local, such as an object or background area, or global, such as the overall style or lighting.
- Mark the area or describe it. For a local change, use the markup control if it is available on your surface, or specify the area in words. Meta’s announcement describes circling, sketching, or annotating directly on the creation.
- State what should change and what should stay. A focused follow-up could say: “Keep the subject and composition; change the background to a quiet garden at dusk.” This is an illustrative instruction, not a tested prompt. Explicitly naming what to preserve can help make the scope of the request clear.
- Make one major correction at a time. Separating a background edit from a style edit makes it easier to see which instruction produced an unwanted side effect.
- Check the revised result. Inspect the changed area and the rest of the image. If the edit altered something you wanted to keep, clarify that in the next request.
When should you use markup, and when should you use words?
Markup is useful when the location of the requested change matters: circle the region or sketch where an element should go. A written instruction is often clearer when the change is conceptual, such as making the scene feel calmer, shifting the style, or changing the time of day. You can combine both by marking the area and describing the desired change in the conversation.
Use a global follow-up for a global problem. If the entire image has the wrong visual treatment, ask for a style or lighting change. Use a local annotation for a misplaced object, an unwanted background item, or a region that needs cleanup. In either case, review whether the rest of the image moved unexpectedly.
What kinds of edits does Meta describe?
Meta describes background cleanup, text rendering, image composition from multiple visual references, and room redesign concepts. These examples show the range of intended use, from small corrections to a new arrangement based on references.
- Background cleanup: request removal or simplification of a distracting area, then inspect the edges and nearby objects.
- Text in an image: ask for a label, sign, or other wording, but verify every character after generation.
- Reference composition: provide visual references for a combined scene while remembering that elements may be redrawn or repositioned.
- Room redesign: use a room photo or concept as a starting point and describe the desired style or changes.
These are vendor-described capabilities, not a guarantee that every edit will be exact. Treat the result as a draft to inspect, especially when a layout or small visual detail matters.

Availability depends on the Meta product surface and geography, and launch announcements are not a complete current country-by-country rollout list. Meta’s July 7, 2026 launch announcement said Muse Image was available in the Meta AI app and on meta.ai, in Instagram Stories in the United States, and in WhatsApp in limited countries; it described Facebook and additional surfaces as planned. These are dated launch statements, not confirmation of the feature’s availability everywhere today.
The same announcement described more than 30 AI-powered effects for Instagram Stories. That was a launch-era count, not a guarantee of the current number of effects or their availability in every account.

If you do not see an image-creation or editing option, check the Meta AI surface offered in your region and its current controls. The official information cited here does not establish a complete current list of supported countries, consumer subscription tiers, or usage limits, so do not assume that a feature or limit on one surface applies to another.
One launch feature is no longer available: Meta’s July 7 announcement was updated on July 10, 2026, to say that the option to reference public Instagram accounts by mentioning them had been discontinued. Do not rely on that account-mention method as an image-reference workflow.

Meta’s consumer announcement says everyday Meta AI image creation is free and mentions subscription plans for people who want to create more. It does not specify a universal consumer subscription tier or a single usage limit in the product information summarized here. Treat availability, limits, and any plan details as surface- and region-dependent, and check the current controls shown in your account.
Do not apply the developer API price to ordinary consumer use. The two routes have different access methods and billing contexts.
Should you use Meta AI or the developer API?
Choose the consumer route if you want to create and refine images through a conversational interface. Choose the API if you are building a software workflow that needs programmatic generation, editing, reference-image composition, or multi-turn refinement.
| Route | Access and workflow | Cost context | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Meta AI consumer surfaces | Use an available app, website, or social-product feature; prompt conversationally and refine with follow-ups or markup. | Meta says everyday consumer image creation is free. Availability, limits, and any subscription details should be checked for the surface and region. | Individual creators, quick experiments, and interactive editing. |
| Meta Model API | Use API credentials and calls for programmatic image generation, edits, reference-image composition, and multi-turn refinement. Meta’s cookbook uses the muse-image-1.0 model and a prior response identifier when continuing a refinement conversation. |
Meta’s Model API product page listed Muse Image at $0.01 per image in 2026. This is API pricing, separate from consumer use; verify the current price before building around it. | Applications, automation, and repeatable developer workflows. |
For API work, Meta’s guide describes sending text and optional reference images and continuing a conversation. Its cookbook’s use of a prior response identifier illustrates how a developer can carry the earlier interaction into a refinement. Follow the current API documentation for request structure, authentication, quotas, and access requirements; do not assume that a consumer prompt screen and an API call have the same controls.
The documented API output can be up to 1600 pixels. That is an API capability described in Meta’s developer material, not a guarantee that every consumer surface delivers images at that dimension.
What should you check before using an image?
Review the result instead of assuming that every requested element is correct. This matters most for details a viewer may read literally or rely on, such as text in an image, the placement of a key object, or the relationship between elements in a composed scene.

Meanwhile, the ergonomic pen grip helps you avoid the strain that comes from hours of using a mouse.
- Check text carefully. Meta’s developer guidance says exact text rendering can vary by run. If a label or sign must be correct, inspect every character and rerun or refine the image if needed.
- Check reference-image compositions. Meta warns in its developer materials that multi-input composition may rearrange or redraw source elements. Do not treat a composition as a pixel-faithful assembly of the supplied images.
- Check the requested edit in context. A local change can affect surrounding parts of the image. Review the whole result, not just the marked region.
- Check visual identity and layout. Confirm that the main subject, perspective, proportions, and placement still match the original goal after each revision.
- Keep API output-size claims in context. Meta’s developer material documents output up to 1600 pixels. That figure is an API capability, not a guarantee about the dimensions delivered by every consumer surface.
What can go wrong, and how can you respond?
The image option is missing
Availability differs by product and location, and the dated launch rollout does not define every current country or surface. Check the Meta AI experience available in your region and its current feature controls rather than assuming the same option appears in every app.
The preset is not close to the intended result
Use the preset only as a starting point. Add the subject, setting, style, and framing details that the preset does not express, then refine the largest mismatch in a follow-up turn.
The image is close, but one detail is wrong
Continue the same conversation and name the mismatch precisely. If the detail has a clear location, use markup where available; otherwise, describe the area and the intended change. State what should remain unchanged so the request is not broader than necessary.
Text or a reference-based layout is inaccurate
Inspect the text and the relationships between elements. Meta’s developer guidance warns that text rendering varies and that reference compositions may be redrawn or rearranged. Refine or rerun the result, then check the revised output rather than assuming a prompt guarantees exact rendering.
The result changes more than you wanted
Narrow the next request: identify the one element to change and explicitly name the subject, framing, or other detail to preserve. If you are using a reference composition, remember that Meta’s API guidance does not promise that input elements will remain unchanged.
You need a repeatable production process
The consumer interface is designed for interactive prompting and editing. If your application needs programmatic requests, reference-image inputs, or multi-turn state, evaluate the separate Model API and its current documentation instead of trying to automate consumer screens.
What is the simplest workflow to remember?
- Open a Meta AI surface that offers image creation where you are.
- Describe the subject, setting, style, and framing, or begin with a photo or preset.
- Review the first result and isolate the most important correction.
- Use a follow-up prompt or markup to make that change while specifying what to preserve.
- Inspect the revision for text, layout, composition, and unintended changes.
- Download or share it using the controls on that surface.
For software integration rather than an interactive consumer workflow, use Meta’s separate Model API documentation and verify current pricing, access, output limits, and capabilities before implementation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I rely on the $0.01 API price staying the same?
No. The $0.01-per-image figure is the price Meta’s Model API page listed in 2026, and API pricing can change. Check the live pricing page and billing terms before estimating ongoing costs.

Does Meta publish a current country-by-country availability list for Muse Image?
The official information referenced here does not provide a complete current country matrix. A launch announcement gives dated examples of availability, but it should not be treated as a current global rollout map.
Can I use an image generated by Muse Image commercially?
The product capability and pricing information summarized here does not establish commercial-use rights. Check Meta’s current terms and any applicable rights or permissions for the images and reference material you use.
Can I still mention a public Instagram account as an image reference?
No. Meta’s July 10, 2026 update said the public Instagram account @-mention reference feature announced at launch had been discontinued. Use the reference-image or conversational tools that are currently available on your Meta AI surface instead.
Will Muse Image preserve every element of a reference composition?
Not necessarily. Meta’s developer guidance says multi-input composition may rearrange or redraw source elements. Inspect the complete result and refine it when placement or identity matters.
Can I create exact signs, labels, or other text in an image?
You can request text, but Meta’s developer guidance says exact text rendering can vary by run. Proofread every character and rerun or refine the image if the wording must be accurate.
What if a follow-up edit changes the wrong parts of the image?
Make the next request narrower, use markup for a clearly located change when available, and state what to preserve, such as the subject, framing, or composition. Then review the entire revised image.

Is the 1600-pixel output size guaranteed in the Meta AI app?
No. Up to 1600 pixels is a capability described for the developer API. It is not a guarantee about dimensions delivered by every consumer surface.
The Bottom Line
Use Meta Muse Image conversationally: describe the image, start from a preset or photo when useful, then refine one issue at a time with follow-up prompts or markup. Availability and consumer controls vary by surface and location. For programmatic workflows, use the separate Model API, keep its $0.01-per-image listing in the developer-pricing context, and verify text, composition, dimensions, and current terms before relying on an output.
