To use dual SIM, keep one compatible physical SIM and one carrier-activated eSIM on the same phone, enable both lines in cellular settings, label them, and assign preferences for calls, messages and mobile data. The exact menus and whether both lines can be active depend on the phone model, region, operating-system version and carrier. iPhone supports one cellular data network at a time; Google Pixel calls its physical-SIM-plus-eSIM arrangement Dual SIM Dual Standby (DSDS). Confirm model and carrier support before you activate a second line, especially if you plan to use two different carriers or travel.
What does dual SIM with an eSIM and a physical SIM do?
A dual-SIM phone holds two mobile plans, usually one number on a removable plastic SIM and another on an embedded SIM (eSIM). Both lines can remain enabled so you can receive calls and texts on either number, choose which line places a call, and select a preferred line for cellular data. The phone does not automatically combine the two plans into one faster data connection.

Apple documents this arrangement as Dual SIM on supported iPhone models. Google describes the Pixel implementation as DSDS: both lines stand by, while the phone manages which line handles an active call or data session. Carrier features such as roaming, Wi-Fi Calling, call forwarding and charges still apply independently to each plan.
Use clear labels such as Personal, Work, Home or Travel. Labels reduce the risk of calling from the wrong number or consuming data on the expensive plan.

Is my iPhone or Android phone compatible with one eSIM and one physical SIM?
Compatibility is determined by the exact model and market version, not merely by the phone family. Check the manufacturer specifications and ask the carrier whether it supports eSIM activation for your device and the intended two-line combination.
iPhone requirements
Apple lists iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR and later as Dual SIM-capable when the carrier supports eSIM. The phone must be unlocked to use two different carriers; if it is locked, both plans generally need to be from the same carrier. Regional models can use different physical-SIM arrangements, so do not assume that every iPhone sold worldwide has the same tray or eSIM capability. See Apple’s Dual SIM support documentation.
Apple’s iOS 26 User Guide identifies physical-SIM-plus-eSIM support for iPhone SE (2nd generation), XR, XS, 11, 12, 13, 14 and later, while noting that availability varies by model and region. Verify your exact market configuration in the iOS 26 iPhone User Guide before relying on two physical lines or an eSIM.
Google Pixel requirements
Google says Pixel 3a and later can use one physical SIM and one eSIM, subject to device and carrier support. Some Pixel instructions require Android 11 or later. Google’s current US caveat says Pixel 10, Pixel 10 Pro and Pixel 10 Pro XL are eSIM-only; Pixel 10 Pro Fold is excluded from that specific caveat. Read the current Google Pixel dual-SIM guidance for your model and region.
Other Android phones
Samsung, Motorola and other manufacturers use different hardware combinations and menu names. A phone may support two physical SIMs, one physical SIM plus eSIM, or eSIM only. Do not copy Pixel instructions blindly: consult the exact model’s manual and have the carrier confirm eSIM provisioning and whether both lines can be active together.

What should I check before activating the second line?
Resolve these compatibility questions before deleting an old plan or travelling:
Recommended Free Tools
- Model and region: confirm the precise model number and where it was sold. Regional variants can change the SIM tray and eSIM features.
- Carrier eSIM support: ask whether the carrier supports your phone, your plan type and the activation method you intend to use.
- Unlock status: a locked phone may prevent use of two different carriers. Confirm the carrier’s unlock policy before purchasing a second plan.
- Identifiers: activation may require the phone’s IMEI, IMEI 2 or EID. On Pixel, Google explains that these appear under Settings > About phone or the SIM-status screen in its identifier instructions.
- Plan terms: check data allowances, roaming rates, Wi-Fi Calling eligibility, call forwarding and any fees for replacing or transferring a SIM.
- Backup and access: keep the carrier account login and a way to receive verification codes while you switch lines.
How do I use dual SIM with an eSIM and physical SIM on iPhone?
Install or retain the physical line, activate the eSIM through the carrier, then configure both plans in Cellular settings. The labels and defaults can be changed later without reactivating either plan.
- Install or verify the physical SIM. Insert the carrier’s SIM in the tray and make sure the existing line can place a call or connect to data.
- Activate the eSIM. Use the carrier’s supported flow, such as its app, QR code or transfer process. Keep the carrier account available if it requests an IMEI, IMEI 2 or EID.
- Open the cellular controls. Go to Settings > Cellular. In some regions this menu is called Mobile Data. Both plans should appear after activation.
- Turn on each line. Tap a plan and enable Turn On This Line (wording can vary by iOS version). Repeat for the other plan.
- Label the plans. Choose labels such as Personal and Work so the number is obvious in the Phone and Messages apps.
- Set defaults. In Cellular settings, choose the default voice line and the line used for cellular data. Configure the line or lines used by iMessage and FaceTime when those options are presented.
- Choose data switching deliberately. Enable Allow Cellular Data Switching only if you want iPhone to use either plan when coverage or availability changes. This setting does not make both plans carry cellular data simultaneously.
How do I choose the line for a call or message on iPhone?
iPhone can place calls from either number. It remembers the number last used for a contact; for a new contact it normally uses the default voice line. Tap the displayed line before placing the call to change it. In Messages, select the preferred line when starting a new conversation. Keep an eye on the label shown on screen so a work call does not go out from a personal number.
How do I turn one iPhone line off temporarily?
Open Settings > Cellular, select the plan and turn off that line. The plan remains installed and can be enabled again later. This is useful for pausing a travel line, but it does not cancel the carrier account or stop recurring charges.
How do I use dual SIM on Android with an eSIM and physical SIM?
Android menus differ by manufacturer. The following procedure is for supported Google Pixel phones; Samsung, Motorola and other devices require their own model-specific paths.

- What you get: 10 identical steel SIM ejector needles, one standard size that fits the eject hole of any phone or tablet with a physical SIM slot, so a spare is always within reach
- Right for your device: Android and Samsung Galaxy phones, cellular iPads and tablets, and any iPhone that still uses a physical SIM, one needle works for all of them
- How to use: push the needle straight into the small hole next to the SIM drawer until it pops open, then lift out the drawer, no force, twisting or technical skill needed
- The difference vs paperclips: a rigid one piece steel needle holds its shape where bent wire flexes, so it presses the release cleanly without scratching or jamming the port
- Ten spares, zero hunting: keep one at home, at the office, in the car, in your wallet and in every travel bag, and hand extras to family or coworkers who always lose theirs
Pixel: add an eSIM when the physical SIM is active
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs.
- Tap Add SIM > Set up an eSIM.
- Choose the provider and follow the on-screen activation steps. The carrier may request an IMEI, IMEI 2 or EID.
- After activation, return to Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and review the preferences for calls, texts and mobile data.
Pixel: add a physical SIM when the eSIM is active
- Power off the phone if the manufacturer recommends doing so, then insert the physical SIM in the tray.
- Restart or follow the preference prompt that appears after insertion.
- Open Settings > Network & internet > SIMs and confirm that both lines are enabled.
- Choose the preferred line for calls, texts and mobile data, or select the option to ask every time where it is offered.
Pixel can present separate choices for calls, texts and data. Google notes that some network combinations can produce “Voice unavailable” or interruptions; contact the carrier if those symptoms persist. Android version and carrier provisioning can change the exact wording.
What about Samsung and other Android phones?
Look for a menu named SIM manager, Mobile network or a similar cellular section, then follow the manufacturer’s eSIM enrollment flow. Before changing settings, record which number belongs to each plan. If the phone offers only one active line, it may be a hardware or regional limitation rather than a configuration error.
Can both SIMs use cellular data at the same time?
No. iPhone uses one cellular data network at a time. Allow Cellular Data Switching lets the phone move data between eligible plans, but it is not simultaneous dual-network bonding. Pixel DSDS likewise keeps both lines on standby while assigning the active data connection according to your preference.
Calls and data can interact. During a call on one line, the other may display No Service. Whether the second line can receive a call depends on the carrier, Wi-Fi Calling support and settings, data-switching behavior and network conditions. Do not promise uninterrupted availability on both numbers when one line is already in use.
Roaming and Wi-Fi Calling are plan-specific. A carrier may allow Wi-Fi Calling on one line but not the other, or charge differently when a travel line supplies data. Read both plan agreements before enabling roaming or automatic data switching.

How should I choose defaults for calls, texts and data?
Choose defaults based on cost and reliability, not just signal bars at home:
| Preference | What it controls | Decision to make |
|---|---|---|
| Default voice line | Number used for new outgoing calls | Use the line contacts recognize or the plan with the best calling terms. |
| Text line | Number used for new SMS or supported messaging conversations | Keep personal and work identities separate; verify the selected label before sending. |
| Cellular data | Plan that carries internet traffic | Pick the plan with sufficient allowance and the best roaming rate. |
| Ask every time | Prompts you to select a line for eligible actions | Useful when usage changes frequently, but slower for routine calls. |
| Data switching | Allows the phone to use another eligible plan when conditions change | Enable only after checking both plans’ data and roaming charges. |
Make a test call from each number, send a test text, and load a webpage with the intended data line selected. Testing before leaving Wi-Fi exposes provisioning or billing surprises while you can still reach the carrier easily.
What are the common dual-SIM problems and fixes?
The eSIM will not activate
- Confirm that the exact phone model and region support eSIM.
- Check that the phone is unlocked when two carriers are involved.
- Verify the carrier supports eSIM for your plan and has supplied the correct activation flow.
- Provide the requested IMEI, IMEI 2 or EID exactly as displayed in the phone settings.
- Restart the phone and retry the carrier’s process. If activation still fails, the carrier must investigate the account or provisioning record; Apple’s support guidance and Google’s identifier instructions explain the information they may need.
The physical SIM is not detected
- Power down if recommended, remove the tray and reseat the SIM with the contacts oriented correctly.
- Check whether your model actually includes a physical-SIM slot; some regional or newer variants do not.
- Inspect the SIM for damage and ask the carrier for a replacement if it is old or unsupported. Google notes that some older SIM cards may not work in newer Pixel phones.
- Install system updates, then recheck Settings > Network & internet > SIMs on Pixel or Settings > Cellular on iPhone.
One line shows “No Service” during a call on the other
This can be normal DSDS behavior. Check whether Wi-Fi Calling is enabled and supported on that line, whether data switching is available, and whether the carrier permits simultaneous reachability. If the line never returns after the call ends, toggle the line off and on or restart the phone, then contact the carrier if the issue continues.

Google says certain network combinations can cause voice interruptions. Confirm that both plans support the phone’s radio configuration and ask the carrier whether the two networks are compatible. A different default voice line may identify which plan is causing the conflict, but the carrier may still need to change provisioning.

- Important Note: it's crucial to use the correct tool and apply gentle pressure to avoid damaging the delicate release mechanism or the SIM card tray itself; If the tool doesn't fit snugly, forcing it in can cause harm; If your ejector pin is lost, we do not recommend using paper clips or any pointed tools as a sim card eject tool alternative as they are too thin and can damage the sim tray and the phone; This is why this product exists
| Comparison point | What to verify |
|---|---|
| Device configuration | Exact model number, sales region and whether the slot is physical, eSIM, or both. |
| Carrier support | eSIM activation for that model, the desired plan type and both lines active together. |
| Unlock status | Whether two different carriers are permitted under the phone’s lock policy. |
| Data behavior | Which line can provide data, whether automatic switching exists and how roaming is billed. |
| Voice continuity | Wi-Fi Calling support, call waiting behavior and known restrictions while the other line is busy. |
| Activation logistics | Whether the carrier needs IMEI, IMEI 2, EID, a QR code, an app or an in-store visit. |
For travel, activate and test the second line before departure, set the travel plan as the data line only when its rates are understood, and leave the primary number enabled for authentication if your carrier permits affordable roaming or Wi-Fi Calling.
What should I remember about using two lines every day?
- Keep labels unambiguous and check the selected line before calls and new messages.
- Review the data line after system updates, SIM changes or travel; the default can differ from what you intended.
- Do not erase an eSIM until you know how the carrier will reissue it. Deleting the profile removes it from the phone but does not necessarily cancel the plan.
- Save both carrier support numbers and account credentials somewhere accessible when one line is offline.
- For non-Pixel Android phones, use the manufacturer’s instructions rather than a generic menu path.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep my existing number on the physical SIM and add a second number by eSIM?
Yes, when the phone and carrier support the combination. The physical line remains installed while the eSIM receives its own number and plan; you then assign which line handles calls, texts and data.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Will WhatsApp or other apps use both dual-SIM numbers?
App behavior is controlled by the app, not by the SIM settings. Many apps verify one number at a time, so check the app’s account-switching or multi-account feature rather than assuming both lines are automatically available.
Does removing the physical SIM cancel that mobile plan?
No. Removing a SIM disconnects that line from the phone, but billing and account status remain with the carrier. Suspend or cancel the plan through the carrier, and keep the SIM if you may need it for another device.
Can I transfer an eSIM to a new phone later?
Usually the carrier must issue or approve a transfer, and the exact process varies by carrier and operating system. Do not erase the old eSIM until the new phone has successfully activated the replacement profile.
