You can continue using Chrome’s New Tab page for ordinary web searches without opening Google AI Mode: click the standard search box, type your query, and do not select the AI Mode control beside or below it. You can still manage shortcuts, themes, backgrounds, cards and footer options through Customize Chrome.
If you want to hide an AI Mode control, be precise about which one. Google documents an Always show AI Mode option for the desktop address bar. Its current personal-user help does not document an equivalent setting that removes the AI Mode entry point from the New Tab page. The control’s availability also varies by platform, account, language, country and rollout stage.

What does it mean to use Chrome without Google AI Mode?
There are two separate goals that are often confused:
- Not using AI Mode: leave the AI Mode button alone and submit searches through the ordinary New Tab page search box.
- Hiding AI Mode: remove an entry point from the interface. Google documents this for the desktop address bar, but the reviewed personal-user instructions do not provide a general setting to remove the New Tab page control.
That distinction matters because changing one surface does not automatically change another. Hiding AI Mode in the address bar should not be described as a way to delete the New Tab page button. Chrome has several search surfaces: the omnibox at the top of the window, the large search field on a New Tab page, and, on Android, the search interface that appears after tapping the field. Each can have its own controls and rollout state.

Google’s desktop AI Mode help describes a control to the right of the New Tab page search box. Selecting it starts AI Mode; using the regular field instead keeps the search on the standard path. The same page says AI Mode may not be available to every person or device. If you do not see the button, you can still use the ordinary search workflow; its absence is not proof that a preference has been enabled.
How do I perform a normal search from Chrome’s New Tab page on a computer?
Open a new tab and use the large, ordinary search field in the middle of the page. Do not click the AI Mode control positioned beside the field. The normal field sends the query through the browser’s configured search service, while the separate AI Mode control is an optional launch path.

- Launch Chrome on Windows, macOS or Linux and select the New Tab button, or press the plus button beside your existing tabs.
- Click the standard search box in the page body. If the page has loaded with the search field focused, you can begin typing immediately.
- Enter your query as usual. You can phrase it as a question, use keywords or paste a longer search just as you would on a conventional search page.
- Submit the query with Enter or select the normal search action in the field. Do not select the separate AI Mode label or icon.
If the address bar is active instead of the page field, you can use it for an ordinary search as well, provided you do not select an AI Mode control that appears there. The New Tab page and address bar are still separate surfaces, so changing the display of one does not rewrite the other.
This approach leaves the New Tab page’s other functions available. You can continue to open a shortcut tile, change the background or adjust cards without entering AI Mode. The presence, wording and placement of the AI Mode control can differ as Google rolls the feature out, so a screenshot from another computer may not match yours. A button beside the field, a label below it or no button at all can each be a normal state for a particular account and release.
How can I customize the rest of the New Tab page while avoiding AI Mode?
Use the page’s Customize Chrome panel. Google’s New Tab customization instructions describe controls for shortcuts, visual appearance, cards and the footer. None of these tasks requires opening the AI Mode control.
Change or remove shortcut tiles
- Open a new tab.
- Select Customize Chrome in the bottom-right corner.
- Open Shortcuts.
- Choose My shortcuts to maintain your own links, or Most visited sites to let Chrome populate the tiles from browsing activity.
- To remove shortcut tiles completely, turn off Show shortcuts.
For a single tile, open that tile’s menu and choose the available edit or remove command. Editing a tile changes its name or destination; removing it takes that tile off the page. These commands affect quick-access links, not the search provider and not the AI Mode entry point.
My shortcuts is the predictable choice if you want a fixed set of links. Most visited sites lets Chrome build the set from browsing activity, so the tiles can change over time. Turning off Show shortcuts hides the entire tile area without changing your ability to search normally. If a tile seems to reappear, check whether the profile has switched between these two shortcut modes.
Adjust themes, backgrounds, cards and the footer
The same customization panel includes theme and background choices, New Tab page cards and footer controls. These options are independent of whether you submit a normal search or open AI Mode. A theme changes the page’s colors or artwork; a background changes the image or visual treatment; cards provide optional content areas; and footer controls govern elements shown along the bottom of the page. The exact labels and available choices can change with Chrome updates.

If a setting is missing, check the conditions Google lists for the flow: the described customization experience expects Google to be the default search engine and the user to be signed in. Device management, location and other configuration can also change which controls appear. This is why two otherwise similar installations can show different panels without either one being broken.
Because these controls are stored or applied by Chrome’s current profile, switching profiles, signing out or using a managed device can produce a different New Tab page. Treat a changed layout as a configuration difference before assuming that AI Mode has replaced the normal page. Check the profile avatar, default search engine and management status first, then reopen Customize Chrome.
How do I hide AI Mode in Chrome’s desktop address bar?
Google’s documented desktop hide action applies to the omnibox (the address bar), not to the New Tab page search area.
- Right-click inside Chrome’s address bar.
- Find Always show AI Mode in the context menu.
- Select it to clear the check mark.
After that, the AI Mode option in the address bar should no longer be persistently shown according to Google’s desktop instructions. This command does not establish a New Tab page preference. If the New Tab page still shows an AI Mode button, that is consistent with the documented separation between the two surfaces.
The wording may not appear if AI Mode has not reached your account, device or language, or if an administrator controls the browser. Do not treat the absence of the menu item as an error by itself. Likewise, seeing the menu item does not mean that the New Tab page must contain an AI Mode button; the controls can roll out independently.
Clearing the check mark is a display choice, not a switch for every AI-related feature. It does not promise to remove search suggestions, experiments or controls that Google may present elsewhere. If your goal is simply to avoid AI Mode, the reliable action is still to use the ordinary search field and leave the AI Mode control unselected.

The reviewed Google personal-user help explains how to open AI Mode from the New Tab page and how to hide it in the desktop address bar, but it does not document a matching personal-user switch that removes the New Tab page entry point. Therefore, the supported consumer method is to use the ordinary search box and leave the AI Mode control unselected.
This is a scoped documentation statement, not a guarantee that no account experiment or later interface change could ever add such a preference. Chrome’s controls can change during rollout. If your page offers a newly named option, verify its description before assuming it affects the New Tab page, the address bar, or both. A setting that changes the address bar should not be presented as a New Tab page removal tool unless Google’s instructions explicitly say so.

There is also no need to uninstall Chrome, delete your shortcuts or change your search engine merely to avoid selecting AI Mode. Those actions address different settings and can remove useful customization. Use the smallest change that matches your goal: ignore the control for ordinary searching, or use the address-bar context-menu option only when you want that particular address-bar control hidden.
How does the procedure differ on an Android phone or tablet?
Android has its own New Tab page entry routes. Google’s Android AI Mode instructions describe opening a new tab, tapping the search box and then AI Mode, or tapping AI Mode below the search box. Those are access instructions, not a personal-user removal setting.

- Tap the ordinary search field and enter your query.
- Submit the search without tapping the separate AI Mode option.
On some Android layouts the AI Mode entry point is below the search field rather than beside it. Read the labels carefully and choose the field’s ordinary search action. If the page opens with a focused field, typing and submitting it normally still follows the non-AI path.
Do not apply the desktop address-bar procedure to Android. The right-click menu and the documented Always show AI Mode command are desktop instructions; the Android help does not describe an equivalent personal hide control for the New Tab page. A long press, browser settings search or desktop context-menu instruction should not be treated as a verified Android workaround.
Android’s interface can place the AI Mode entry point below the search field rather than beside it. Its visibility depends on the same broader rollout factors as the desktop experience, so two Android devices may show different controls. A missing option can reflect country, language, account, device or timing rather than a local fault.
Can an administrator disable Google AI Mode integrations in managed Chrome?
Yes, administrators have a different option from ordinary profile settings. Chrome Enterprise documentation lists a Google AI Mode integrations policy that can control integrations in the address bar and the New Tab page search box.

The policy documentation covers managed Chrome on Android, ChromeOS, iOS and Chrome browser installations for Windows, Mac and Linux. It applies only when Chrome is configured with Google as the default search engine. An administrator must deploy or change the policy; it is not a setting that every signed-in user can edit from the New Tab page.

- customization choices are locked or different; or
- the address bar and New Tab page behave consistently across several devices.
Ask your organization’s Chrome administrator which policy values are active. Local troubleshooting cannot override a browser policy, and changing the default search engine may affect whether the documented policy applies. An administrator may need to update the policy centrally, wait for it to propagate and relaunch Chrome before the interface changes. Users should not assume that a missing local toggle means they have permission to alter enterprise settings.
Why does the AI Mode control appear for some people but not others?
Google says AI Mode is not available to everyone or on every device. Rollout outside the United States and support for non-English languages are gradual, so feature presence can vary by country, language, account, device and date.

A missing button does not necessarily mean it has been disabled, while a visible button does not imply that a removal setting exists. Chrome may also show different controls when a profile is signed out, when Google is not the default search engine, or when an administrator manages the browser.
Google also cautions that AI responses can contain mistakes. Avoiding the control is therefore an interface choice, not a claim that AI Mode is unavailable or that its output is always reliable. The ordinary search path may be preferable when you want conventional result links, a familiar workflow or a clear separation from AI-generated answers.
When comparing instructions, record the platform and context: desktop or Android, personal or managed, signed in or signed out, and the configured default search engine. Those details explain many apparent contradictions. A help image showing a control in one country or language is not a promise that the same control appears on every installation.

Use the row that matches both your platform and management context. A desktop personal profile and a managed desktop installation can expose different controls even on the same operating-system version. If you move between a personal laptop, an Android phone and a work browser, repeat the identification rather than carrying a setting from one device to another.

What should I check when the New Tab page does not match these instructions?
- Confirm the surface: the address bar, the New Tab page search box and an Android search screen are separate interfaces.
- Check the profile: sign-in status, profile changes and default-search-engine settings can alter customization availability.
- Look for management: a work or school browser may enforce the Google AI Mode integrations policy.
- Account for rollout: country, language, device and timing can determine whether AI Mode appears.
- Use the normal field: when the goal is conventional search, select the standard search box rather than the AI Mode control.
- Reopen the page: after changing a profile or policy, open a fresh New Tab page so you are checking the current surface rather than an older tab.
- Compare like with like: use the same platform, account and default search engine when checking another device.
If the address-bar menu does not contain Always show AI Mode, Google’s documentation does not require that every user see it. If the New Tab page still contains AI Mode after clearing the address-bar option, that is not evidence that the action failed; the two controls are documented separately.
If Customize Chrome is missing or incomplete, verify that you are on a New Tab page rather than a search-results page, then check whether Google is the default search engine and whether the profile is signed in. On a managed device, ask the administrator before changing browser-wide settings. Avoid deleting profile data or shortcuts as a first troubleshooting step because those actions do not remove a documented New Tab page AI Mode control.

Does hiding AI Mode in the address bar also remove it from Chrome search suggestions?
Google’s documented command is limited to the address-bar display control. It does not specify how search suggestions, experiments or other surfaces should appear, so those elements can remain subject to separate Chrome settings and rollout changes.
Can I keep my New Tab shortcuts while avoiding AI Mode?
Yes. Shortcut visibility and shortcut type are controlled under Customize Chrome and Shortcuts; they do not require opening the AI Mode control. You can retain, edit or remove tiles independently.
Why is the customization panel different when I use another search engine?

Who can change the Google AI Mode integrations policy?
