Android Auto can stop connecting when a VPN is active because the VPN changes how Android routes traffic or blocks connections that do not pass through the tunnel. The fastest diagnosis is to disconnect the VPN briefly and retry Android Auto. If it works immediately, reconnect the VPN and exclude Android Auto with the VPN app’s split-tunneling or per-app setting. If that still fails, review Android’s “Block connections without VPN” and always-on VPN controls. These settings vary by phone, Android release, VPN app, and whether you use a cable or wireless projection, so a failure does not mean every VPN or every Android Auto setup is incompatible.
Why does Android Auto stop working when my VPN is on?
A VPN can interfere with Android Auto when its routing, DNS handling, firewall, or traffic-blocking policy prevents the phone from completing the connection with the vehicle. The effect is configuration-dependent: some phones and VPNs continue working normally, while others fail to start Android Auto, lose an existing session, or connect only after the VPN is paused.

The phone and vehicle must establish a projection session, and wireless configurations also depend on local wireless communication. A VPN that forces all traffic through its tunnel, prevents local-network access, or blocks traffic outside the tunnel can disrupt that process. Google’s Android VPN guidance warns that some apps may behave differently or fail while a VPN is connected and suggests excluding the app or temporarily pausing the VPN.
The practical implication is important: treat the VPN as a testable cause, not as proof that your car, cable, or phone is defective. Disconnecting the VPN for a minute is a diagnostic step; the usual long-term solution is to keep the VPN for other apps while routing Android Auto outside it.

How can I confirm that the VPN is the cause?
Use a controlled disconnect-and-reconnect test before changing several Android Auto settings at once. This separates a VPN-routing problem from ordinary USB, Bluetooth, app, or vehicle faults.
- Park safely. Do not change phone settings while driving. Put the vehicle in park and keep the phone accessible.
- Disconnect the VPN from its app. Use the VPN app’s Disconnect or Pause control rather than uninstalling it or deleting a profile.
- Retry Android Auto. Plug in the cable again, or restart the wireless pairing process according to your vehicle’s normal procedure.
- Observe the result. If Android Auto connects only after the VPN is disconnected, the VPN path is a credible lead. If it still fails, investigate the cable, vehicle compatibility, Android Auto permissions, Bluetooth pairing, and phone updates separately.
- Reconnect the VPN after the test. Leaving it disconnected is a temporary workaround, not a permanent privacy recommendation.
A successful test does not identify the exact setting responsible. It only shows that changing the VPN state changes the outcome. The next step is a targeted per-app rule rather than repeatedly turning the entire VPN off.

How do I use Android Auto while connected to a VPN?
Configure split tunneling so Android Auto is excluded from the VPN while other apps remain protected. VPN apps use different names and layouts, and some do not offer per-app routing on every Android version.
Find the per-app or split-tunneling control
Open the VPN app and look for a menu named Split tunneling, Per-app VPN, App exclusion, Bypass VPN, or similar. Read the description carefully: some screens select apps that use the VPN, while others select apps that must bypass it.
Example: ExpressVPN’s current Android path
ExpressVPN’s instructions, updated September 3, 2026, use this sequence: open Profile, choose Split Tunneling, select Do not allow selected apps to use the VPN, and add Android Auto. Disconnect and reconnect the VPN so the rule is applied. The labels on your device may differ, even when the underlying function is the same.
Apply and verify the rule
- Select Android Auto in the bypass or excluded-app list.
- Save the setting if the app provides a Save or Apply button.
- Disconnect and reconnect the VPN; many clients do not change routing for an already-established tunnel.
- Start Android Auto again and check whether the session remains connected while another app, such as a browser, still shows the VPN connection.
Android Auto may appear under a different package label on some phones, or the projection component may be integrated into Android rather than shown as a separate launcher icon. If you cannot find it, search the VPN app’s list for “Android Auto,” “Google,” or the system projection entry, and consult that provider’s current support instructions instead of selecting unrelated Google apps at random.

What is the difference between a VPN allowlist and a denylist?
An allowlist sends only the apps you select through the VPN; a denylist (also called an exclusion list) sends selected apps outside the VPN while the rest use it. Android’s documented model supports one mode at a time, not both simultaneously.
| Mode | What the selected apps do | When it helps | Risk to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Allowlist | Selected apps use the VPN; unselected apps use the normal connection. | Useful when only a small set of apps needs VPN protection. | Android Auto will bypass the VPN unless you explicitly add it. |
| Denylist / exclusion | Selected apps bypass the VPN; unselected apps use the VPN. | Useful when you want broad VPN coverage but need Android Auto to use ordinary networking. | A system policy may block the excluded app from connecting. |
Check the explanatory text in your VPN app before saving. Choosing the wrong mode can produce the opposite result: Android Auto may remain inside the tunnel when you intended to bypass it, or other apps may silently lose VPN coverage.
Why can “Block connections without VPN” undo an exclusion?
Android can enforce a strict policy that rejects network traffic whenever it is not using the VPN. An app excluded from VPN routing then has no permitted path, so Android Auto can remain offline even though the split-tunnel rule is correct.
Review the system VPN controls
On many Android phones, open Settings → Network & internet → VPN, tap the gear beside the active VPN, and inspect Always-on VPN and Block connections without VPN. Manufacturer interfaces may place these controls under Connections, More connection settings, or a similarly named menu.
- Always-on VPN: keeps the VPN service active and can reconnect it after a restart or network change.
- Block connections without VPN: prevents traffic that Android determines is outside the tunnel.
If Android Auto is intentionally excluded, a strict block policy can defeat that choice. Turn off the block only if you understand the privacy consequence and your security requirements allow ordinary-network traffic for the excluded app. If your workplace, school, or security policy requires the block, the practical alternatives are to keep Android Auto inside the VPN, pause the VPN while using the car, or use a VPN implementation that supports the required local traffic.
Does wired Android Auto behave differently from wireless Android Auto?
Either connection type can be affected, and the available evidence does not establish that one is universally immune. Wireless projection introduces additional local wireless communication, so a VPN’s local-network or firewall behavior may be more visible there; a cable does not guarantee success if the phone’s traffic policy still blocks the projection service.

If you use a USB cable
- Test the VPN disconnect with the same cable and USB port you normally use.
- After adding the exclusion, disconnect and reconnect both the VPN and the cable.
- If the VPN test makes no difference, inspect cable quality, USB permissions, Android Auto updates, and the vehicle’s USB compatibility.
If you use wireless projection
- Repeat the test with the VPN disconnected, then rebuild the wireless session after reconnecting the VPN.
- Check whether the VPN app has a setting for local-network access, LAN bypass, or trusted networks; terminology varies and not every app exposes it.
- Keep the phone near the vehicle during pairing and remove stale Bluetooth or Wi-Fi pairings only if ordinary wireless troubleshooting is also indicated.
A device-specific wireless Android Auto adapter manual recommends turning VPN apps off while using wireless Android Auto. That is a product-specific instruction, not evidence that buying an adapter fixes VPN interference. Treat an adapter as a compatibility accessory only when your phone and vehicle already require one, not as the first remedy for a VPN conflict.
What should I do if split tunneling does not fix Android Auto?
Work through the checks below in order. Change one variable at a time so you can identify which setting affects the connection.
1. Confirm the exclusion is active
Reopen the VPN app and verify that Android Auto is in the intended list. Some apps require a tunnel restart after every rule change; others require a full app restart. Disconnect and reconnect the VPN before testing again.
2. Check the block policy
Return to the Android VPN profile and inspect Block connections without VPN. If it is enabled, an excluded Android Auto process may be rejected. Temporarily disabling the block can confirm the diagnosis, but restore the strict policy if your security requirements demand it and use a different workaround.
3. Review always-on behavior
An always-on VPN can reconnect immediately after you pause it, making a brief test appear inconsistent. Disable always-on only for troubleshooting if permitted by your administrator or security policy, then reconnect manually and retest.
4. Update the relevant apps
Install available updates for Android Auto, the VPN client, and Google Play system components. Update instructions and menu names change over time, so a support article written for an older app version may not match your screen.

5. Rebuild the connection in the normal order
With the exclusion saved, restart the phone if necessary, start the vehicle, establish Bluetooth or USB connectivity, and then connect the VPN. If your vehicle normally starts Android Auto before the VPN connects, preserve that order and see whether the session survives the tunnel change.
6. Test another network condition
Try the same phone and vehicle on a different mobile network or Wi-Fi environment only if it is safe and practical. If Android Auto fails only on one network, the issue may involve that network’s DNS, captive portal, or firewall rather than the VPN rule itself.
7. Check provider-specific guidance
VPN providers change Android implementation details and may expose different split-tunneling capabilities by subscription, app version, or operating-system release. Use the provider’s current support page for the exact menu path, and tell support that Android Auto works when the VPN is disconnected but fails when it is connected.
Should I pause the VPN or exclude Android Auto?
Pausing is the quickest diagnostic and the simplest temporary workaround. Excluding Android Auto is more convenient for regular driving because other apps can remain on the VPN, but it depends on provider support and Android’s traffic-blocking policy.
Recommended Free Tools
| Choice | Advantages | Limitations | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pause or disconnect the VPN | Immediate, easy to understand, and available even when the VPN app has no split tunneling. | All phone traffic leaves the VPN while disconnected; you must remember to reconnect it. | Diagnosis, emergency access, or occasional driving. |
| Exclude Android Auto | Preserves VPN routing for other apps and automates the workaround. | Requires a per-app feature; “Block connections without VPN” can still prevent the excluded app from connecting. | Frequent use when your security policy permits ordinary traffic for Android Auto. |
| Keep Android Auto inside the VPN | Maintains uniform VPN coverage if the connection works in that configuration. | Does not solve a routing conflict; Android Auto may continue failing. | Devices where bypassing the VPN is not allowed and the projection session remains functional. |
There is no evidence that one option is best for every phone, VPN, vehicle, or connection type. Choose according to whether Android Auto works through the tunnel, whether your policy allows an exception, and how much manual intervention you will tolerate.

When is the VPN probably not the cause?
If Android Auto fails identically with the VPN disconnected, the VPN is unlikely to be the main cause. Focus on ordinary projection requirements and record exactly where the process stops.
- No USB response: try a known data-capable cable and another vehicle USB port.
- Wireless pairing fails before projection: check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, permissions, and saved vehicle pairings.
- Projection starts and then drops: inspect cable movement, phone heat, battery restrictions, and vehicle firmware.
- Only one phone fails: compare Android Auto and Google Play component versions with a known-working phone if available.
- Only one vehicle fails: check that vehicle’s infotainment settings and manufacturer compatibility information.
Keep the VPN test result in your notes. Telling a vehicle or VPN support technician that Android Auto succeeds immediately when the VPN is disconnected is more useful than reporting only that “Android Auto is broken.”
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesWhat privacy trade-off does an Android Auto exclusion create?
When Android Auto is excluded, the traffic associated with that app uses the ordinary network path rather than the VPN tunnel. Your other apps may remain protected, but the excluded traffic no longer receives the VPN’s routing, address masking, or tunnel-level filtering.
That trade-off can be reasonable when the VPN itself prevents the projection session, especially if Android Auto mainly needs to communicate with the vehicle. It is not reasonable to bypass a VPN if your organization requires all traffic to remain inside it. Decide based on the sensitivity of the data, your employer’s rules, and whether the vehicle connection works without an exception.
What is the shortest reliable fix?
Disconnect the VPN and retry Android Auto. If that restores the connection, add Android Auto to the VPN’s bypass list, restart the tunnel, and check that Android’s “Block connections without VPN” setting is not rejecting the excluded traffic. If the VPN is disconnected and Android Auto still fails, pursue cable, wireless pairing, app-update, and vehicle troubleshooting instead.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Android Auto automatically reconnect when I turn the VPN off?
Often it will, but an existing failed session may need the USB cable unplugged and reconnected or wireless projection restarted. Wait for the VPN status to show disconnected before initiating the Android Auto connection again.
Can a work-managed phone prevent me from excluding Android Auto?
Yes. Device-management policies can force an always-on VPN or forbid traffic outside it, and the controls may be hidden. Contact the administrator rather than removing a managed VPN profile.
Does excluding Android Auto expose my car’s location?
The exclusion changes how the phone’s Android Auto-related traffic is routed; it does not by itself grant the vehicle internet access or change the car’s built-in privacy settings. What is visible still depends on the phone, vehicle, mobile carrier, and apps operating during the session.
Why does the VPN reconnect as soon as I disconnect it?
An always-on VPN, an automatic-connect rule, or a kill-switch policy may be restoring the tunnel. Check the VPN app’s auto-connect settings and Android’s always-on profile, subject to any work or security policy on the phone.
