How to Use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac as a Teleprompter

Use a teleprompter app on an iPhone, iPad, or Mac, or combine Apple devices for a larger prompt and separate camera. Here’s how to set up each workflow.

To use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac as a teleprompter, open a teleprompter app, add your script, position the text near the camera, and set a readable font size and scroll speed. Use the device’s own screen for a simple setup, a second Apple device for a larger or better-placed prompt, or an iPhone as a Mac webcam while reading from a separate display. Continuity Camera connects the iPhone camera to compatible Mac apps; it does not scroll your script.

Choose the setup that fits your recording

First decide which screen will show the words and which device will record or host the call. A prompt closer to the camera lens generally makes it easier to look toward the viewer while reading.

  • One-device setup: Use a teleprompter app on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac that you are using to record or present. This is the simplest arrangement when the prompt can sit near the camera.
  • Second-screen setup: Display the script on an iPad or another screen placed beside or below the camera. This gives you more freedom to position the text, though a screen farther from the lens can make eye movement more noticeable.
  • iPhone-as-webcam setup: Use Continuity Camera to make the iPhone camera or microphone available to a compatible Mac app, and show the script on the Mac or another display.

An iPhone is compact, an iPad often offers more room for script text, and a Mac suits desk-based recording or calls. The best choice depends on viewing distance, eyesight, camera position, and how much of the screen you need for other controls.

Set up the teleprompter app

  1. Choose an app for the job. App Store listings describe options that can include script editing, scrolling, recording, mirroring, external displays, and remote controls. Features and plan limits vary by app, so check its current listing before relying on a specific function. See Apple’s Teleprompter App Store listing and Teleprompter Premium App Store listing.
  2. Add your script. Paste or import the text, then review it on the device you will use. Break up long passages into readable paragraphs and remove notes you do not intend to speak aloud.
  3. Place the device. Put the prompt as close to the camera lens as practical. For a phone or tablet on a stand, make sure it is stable and will not shift while you read or operate controls.
  4. Adjust font size and speed. Increase the text until it is comfortable to read from your actual position. Set a speed that lets you speak naturally; there is no universal setting because reading distance and pace differ.
  5. Rehearse before recording. Read a short passage with the final placement, font size, and scrolling method. Adjust the setup if you have to dart your eyes, rush to keep up, or stop to catch the text.
  6. Start the recording or call. Use the app’s on-screen controls or a compatible remote if needed. Confirm that the selected app supports the particular keyboard, clicker, controller, or foot pedal before buying or connecting one.

Use an iPhone as the teleprompter

For a portable single-device setup, install a teleprompter app, load the script, and use the iPhone screen as the prompt. Some apps also record with the device camera, but recording and export features are app-specific. A small screen may require larger text, a closer viewing position, or more frequent pauses; tune it to your own setup rather than relying on a preset.

Use an iPhone as a Mac webcam

Apple’s Continuity Camera lets compatible Mac apps use an iPhone camera or microphone. Apple says to mount the iPhone securely, with its rear camera facing you; landscape orientation is recommended for automatic selection by apps. For wireless use, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth should be on, the devices should use the same Apple Account, and they should be within 10 meters of each other. A wired USB connection is also supported. These are Continuity Camera requirements, not requirements for every teleprompter app. See Apple’s Continuity Camera instructions.

When the iPhone is the camera, show the script on the Mac or a separate screen positioned near the iPhone lens. Continuity Camera supplies the camera or microphone connection; the teleprompter app or script window supplies the text and scrolling.

Use an iPad as the prompt or second screen

An iPad’s larger display can make a script easier to read from a distance. Run a teleprompter app directly on the iPad, place it beside or below the camera, and adjust text size and scrolling while viewing it from the recording position. If your setup uses a beam-splitter teleprompter, check that the app has a mirror or reverse-text option and follow the rig’s orientation instructions.

You can also use Sidecar to extend or mirror a Mac desktop on an iPad, which may let you place a Mac app window on the iPad. Sidecar is a display feature; it does not add script scrolling on its own. Apple describes Sidecar and other Continuity features in its guide to working across Apple devices.

Use a Mac as the teleprompter

On a Mac, use a teleprompter app or position a script window near the camera. Some apps document floating overlays, multiple windows, or external-display workflows; confirm that the app and your macOS version support the arrangement you want. For a call or presentation, test that the prompt does not cover meeting controls, captions, or the recording preview.

If you prefer not to use an app, a document window can display the script, but it will not necessarily scroll automatically. Keep the window near the camera and use manual scrolling or a supported control method that you have tested before the session.

Mirroring, remotes, and app features

When to mirror text

Mirroring or reversing text is useful when a beam-splitter rig reflects the words toward you. It is not normally needed when reading directly from a phone, tablet, or computer screen. Check the rig instructions before enabling a mirror mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to use a remote

Some apps support controls such as an iPhone or iPad, Bluetooth keyboard, handheld clicker, game controller, or foot pedal. Compatibility and connection methods differ. Verify the selected app’s feature list and test the control with your device before recording.

Recording and other extras

Recording, external-display output, script export, captions, and syncing are not universal teleprompter functions. Check the current app listing and plan details for any capability you need. Neither Apple’s built-in Camera app nor Continuity Camera should be assumed to provide automatic script scrolling.

Apple feature requirements and what they do

Apple’s current support information lists Continuity Camera for Mac as requiring iOS 16 or later and iPhone XR or later, plus macOS Ventura 13 or later on the Mac. Apple lists iPhone Mirroring as requiring iOS 18 or later and macOS Sequoia 15 or later on a Mac with Apple silicon or the T2 Security Chip; availability is limited by region, and Apple says it is not currently available in the European Union. Check Apple’s current Continuity feature requirements for changes.

iPhone Mirroring and Continuity Camera are different features. Mirroring allows interaction with an iPhone from a Mac where available; Continuity Camera makes the iPhone camera or microphone available to a Mac app. Neither feature provides teleprompter text or scrolling by itself, and iPhone Mirroring is not necessary for ordinary teleprompter use.

Troubleshoot common teleprompter problems

  • Your eyes move noticeably while reading: Move the prompt closer to the camera lens, reduce the distance between the text and lens, and rehearse at the intended camera framing.
  • You keep losing your place: Increase the font size, slow the scroll, or revise paragraph breaks. Rehearse with the final settings rather than changing them during the take.
  • The text appears backward: Turn off mirror mode for direct screen reading. Enable it only if the physical teleprompter rig requires reflected text.
  • A remote does not control scrolling: Confirm the app supports that specific controller and check its connection instructions. Remote compatibility is not universal.
  • The iPhone camera does not appear in a Mac app: Check that the iPhone and Mac meet Apple’s Continuity Camera requirements, that Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are on for wireless use, that both devices use the same Apple Account, and that the phone is within range. Try USB if wireless setup is not working.
  • The prompt covers call or recording controls: Move the script to a second display, reposition the app window, or use an app-supported external-display mode.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a 24/7 YouTube live stream rather than read a script during a recording, StreamNeo is a separate option: upload a video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It runs in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos streamed to YouTube, not live camera prompting.
