To get clean HDMI, turn off the camera’s HDMI information or display overlay, connect its HDMI output to a compatible capture device, and select that device as the video source in your streaming software. The exact setting and whether it works in your chosen recording or live-view mode depend on the camera model.
What clean HDMI means
Clean HDMI is a camera’s HDMI video feed without onscreen indicators such as recording status, battery level, or exposure information. Panasonic uses the term for an HDMI transmission without those indicators. If the camera cannot disable them in the mode you are using, they may remain visible in the stream.

A capture device receives the camera’s HDMI signal and makes it available to a computer or other equipment. The usual path is camera HDMI output → capture-device HDMI input → computer → streaming software.

- Check the exact camera model and mode. Look up live HDMI output and clean-output behavior in the camera’s current manual or manufacturer support page. Features can change by operating mode; Panasonic cautions that some cameras on its clean-output list may not provide clean output while recording.
- Confirm the camera has the right output. It must send live video over HDMI in the mode you plan to use.
- Match the capture device to the signal. Check its accepted resolution and frame rates against the camera’s HDMI output. Elgato’s compatibility guidance for Cam Link cites 720p or 1080p; that is specific to Cam Link and not a universal limit for capture devices.
- Identify the cable and connectors. Check the camera manual for its HDMI port size, then choose a cable that fits the camera and the capture device’s HDMI input.
- Plan for a long session. Verify that the camera can stay active for the intended duration, disable standby or power-saving behavior where possible, and arrange suitable power. Sustained video can cause some cameras to heat up; Sony warns that high-quality continuous streaming may raise camera temperature and trigger automatic shutdown.
Set up and test the clean HDMI feed
- Put the camera in the mode you will stream from. Sony recommends Movie Mode in its documented workflow. Use your camera’s manual to confirm the appropriate mode and whether clean output is available while recording or in live view.
- Turn off HDMI overlays. Look for a setting named HDMI Info Display, HDMI Information Display, Live View display, or similar. For one Sony example, the menu path is
HDMI Settings → HDMI Info. Display → Off. This is a model-specific example, not a universal path. - Set the output format. Choose a resolution and frame rate supported by both the camera and capture device. Nikon’s general guidance includes setting the desired movie frame size and frame rate, HDMI output resolution to Auto, output display size to 100%, and HDMI live-view onscreen display to Off. Menu labels and available options vary by camera, so follow its manual.
- Connect the hardware. Connect the camera’s HDMI output to the capture device’s HDMI input with the correctly matched cable, then connect the capture device to the computer.
- Select the capture device in your streaming software. Add or select the device as the video source. Check the preview or an external monitor to confirm that the camera picture appears and that the overlays are gone.
- Run a session-length test. Confirm the camera does not enter standby, the capture device continues to receive the chosen format, and the camera stays within its power and temperature limits. Do this before relying on the setup for a live broadcast.
Troubleshoot common clean HDMI problems
The camera menu or status icons are still on screen
Check the HDMI information or display setting on the camera, then verify clean output in the specific mode you are using. Some models behave differently between live view and recording. Cropping the image in software may conceal indicators near an edge, but it does not produce a clean HDMI feed.

The streaming software shows no picture
Confirm the camera is sending live HDMI in the selected mode, the cable is connected to the camera’s output and the capture device’s input, and the capture device is selected as the source. Check that the camera’s output resolution and frame rate are accepted by the device; consult both product manuals rather than assuming all devices accept the same formats.
The image disappears during a long stream
Check standby timers, battery-saving behavior, external power, and camera temperature. Nikon recommends setting standby timers to no limit or the maximum the camera permits. Some cameras may shut down if they become too hot during sustained, high-quality output.

The camera’s HDMI connector does not fit the cable

Or let it run in the cloud
Clean HDMI is for streaming a live camera feed. If your goal is instead to keep uploaded videos playing on a YouTube channel around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a camera feed, and is for YouTube only.
