To stream a virtual conference on YouTube, schedule or create the event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, connect an encoder with the event’s stream URL and key, test the complete program, then preview and monitor the broadcast. The encoder can combine cameras, slides, and remote speakers; YouTube does not require one particular software brand.
Before you set up the encoder
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Confirm eligibility before building the event; channel restrictions can prevent an otherwise ready production from going live. YouTube’s livestreaming eligibility guidance explains the requirement.

Choose the event format and encoder
An encoder is the software or hardware that sends your composed program to YouTube. It can combine cameras, microphones, slides, and remote speakers, and may add graphics or overlays. Choose software that supports the production you need and that your operators can rehearse; YouTube names Wirecast as one software-encoder example, not as a required choice. For higher-production-value events, YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders. Neither option replaces a clear microphone signal, suitable cameras, or a dependable upload connection. Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create a stream or use Manage to schedule one.

Set the title, description, visibility, and other event details. Select the intended privacy setting deliberately; a scheduled stream is not automatically public.

Schedule in advance if you want a watch-page URL to share and an upcoming event that subscribers can find. Check the event’s audience access from a viewer’s perspective before promoting it.

In Live Control Room, locate the stream URL (server URL) and stream key for the event. Keep the key private: YouTube treats it like a password. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in the encoder.

Connect the software and choose stream settings

In your encoder, select the YouTube/RTMP or RTMPS destination, or choose a custom server if the software asks for one. Enter YouTube’s stream URL in the server field and the event’s stream key in the key field. Do not share or show the key on screen.

Choose a video resolution and frame rate the production and connection can sustain. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and selecting quality accordingly; a venue’s nominal broadband plan is not proof that the available upload will hold steady during the event.

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codecs. Its table recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that every encoder or network will work reliably at every setting.

If using H.264, YouTube recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are starting points from YouTube’s encoder table, not universal targets: test the actual venue connection and lower the output if it cannot sustain the setting without drops.
Use YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance to check the latest recommendations. A lower resolution that remains stable is generally more useful to a conference audience than a high-quality feed that repeatedly buffers or disconnects.
Rehearse the entire program before the event
YouTube recommends setting up encoders at least two hours before the livestream and starting them at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event. Build those intervals into the run-of-show, particularly if speakers, slides, or venue networks need troubleshooting.

Rehearse representative speech, music if used, slide changes, speaker handoffs, and movement. Check that voices are understandable and that the program looks correct in the Live Control Room preview.

Check the watch page on desktop and mobile, and confirm that the intended audience can access it with the selected visibility setting.

Test failover: stop the primary encoder or disconnect its network connection and verify that the backup encoder takes over in the player. Do not assume a backup path works until you have exercised it.

Confirm that local recording is enabled if you need an independent archive, and verify that the file is growing and playable.

Check audio and video together, not just the preview image. Include any microphones and other audio hardware that will be used during the event.

Set latency and audience interaction intentionally
Latency affects how quickly viewers see the program relative to the encoder. Lower latency can make a live Q&A feel more immediate, but YouTube warns that it can increase buffering. If the conference is mostly presentations, prioritize reliable playback; if audience interaction is central, test a lower-latency setting under realistic network conditions before choosing it.
YouTube says 4K/2160 streams use normal latency. DVR, when enabled, lets viewers pause and rewind. Consider whether that suits the format, and verify the relevant settings in Manage live stream settings.

Run the broadcast and close it out cleanly

Start the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled start. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and review stream health messages and audio/video quality.

For a scheduled stream, use Go live in Live Control Room when the program is ready. Keep an operator watching stream health and the actual audio and picture throughout the conference.

If the connection or encoder fails, follow the rehearsed recovery plan. Confirm that the backup stream reaches the player rather than relying only on the encoder’s status display.

At the end, end the stream in Live Control Room and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube automatically archives streams under 12 hours; check the resulting recording and your local archive rather than assuming either is intact.

The encoder connects, but viewers cannot watch: Check the event’s visibility, watch-page URL, and audience access from a separate desktop or mobile session. A scheduled event is not necessarily public.

The stream drops or buffers: Check Live Control Room stream health and the venue’s upload stability. Reduce resolution or bitrate to a setting the connection can sustain, then test again. Use the backup encoder only after confirming it has taken over in the player.

The preview is missing or the event will not start: Verify the correct stream URL and key are in the encoder, that the channel is eligible to livestream, and that the encoder is sending a supported configuration. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder.

Audio is unclear or missing: Check the selected input device and levels in the encoder, then test speech and handoffs in the preview. Confirm the actual microphone and audio path, not only the video feed.

The stream looks fine locally but the archive is missing or incomplete: Check whether the stream lasted under 12 hours, review the resulting YouTube recording, and inspect the local archive file. For longer streams, do not rely on YouTube’s automatic archive behavior described for streams under 12 hours.
