To use automatic detergent dosing, fill the washer’s detergent reservoir with the permitted liquid detergent to its MAX line, close the lid and drawer, turn dosing on, and set the dose and concentration to match the detergent label and your water hardness. Then choose a cycle that supports AutoDose. When the machine reports a low level, refill the tank.
Do not put pods, powder, wool detergent or another unsupported product in an automatic tank. Turn AutoDose off and add that product to the manual compartment or drum exactly as the model manual directs. “AI” usually describes sensors and software around this dosing system; the controls and product restrictions still vary by model.

What does an AI washer’s automatic detergent dosing system do?
Automatic dosing stores liquid detergent (and, on many models, liquid fabric softener) in dedicated reservoirs, then releases a measured amount during each compatible programme. The machine may use your selected dose, detergent concentration, water-hardness setting, programme and, on some models, sensed load information to determine how much liquid to dispense.
The feature is not a universal detergent standard. Samsung documents selectable dose and concentration settings; LG ezDispense uses detergent and softener tanks with selectable dosage levels; AEG/Electrolux highlights water-hardness and detergent-type adjustments; and Bosch describes programme-dependent intelligent dosing. Read the manual for the exact appliance before filling a tank.

What the reservoirs contain
Most automatic drawers separate detergent and softener. The detergent tank is for the specified liquid laundry detergent. A separate softener tank, when fitted, is for compatible liquid fabric softener only. Never assume that every drawer compartment is an automatic tank: some spaces remain manual-dose compartments.
How long does one fill last?
Manufacturers describe the convenience in different ways. LG USA said in 2025 that a tank can hold enough detergent and fabric softener for about a month of laundry. Samsung Australia said in 2026 that its Auto Dispense drawer holds detergent for up to one month based on an average of four loads per week. Your actual interval changes with tank size, load count, programme selection and dose setting.

How do I fill the automatic detergent reservoir?
Use this sequence whenever you refill, unless your model manual gives a different procedure.
- Identify the detergent tank. Look for the marked automatic detergent reservoir, separate from any softener tank and from manual-dose compartments. Samsung and LG both use dedicated detergent and softener sections, but drawer layouts differ.
- Open the drawer and the reservoir lid. Pull the drawer out fully, then open the cap or lid on the detergent tank. Do not pour into a closed drawer or into the wrong compartment.
- Check the product. Use only the liquid detergent formulation approved by the washer manual. Confirm whether the machine requires a high-efficiency (HE) product and whether the detergent’s concentration is compatible with the available settings.
- Pour to the MAX line. Add liquid detergent slowly until the tank reaches its MAX mark. Do not overfill; leave no assumption that the machine will correct an overfilled reservoir.
- Fill softener separately, if needed. If your washer has an automatic softener tank, add only the permitted liquid softener to that tank. Keep detergent and softener out of each other’s reservoirs.
- Close every lid and the drawer completely. LG warns that an incompletely closed drawer can prevent operation. A closed lid also reduces drying and hardening of liquid residue.
Wipe spills from the drawer and surrounding seal. A film of detergent on the drawer can attract lint and eventually restrict the dispenser path.
How do I turn AutoDose on and choose an amount?
Automatic dosing must be enabled for the selected cycle. The wording differs by model, but the control normally appears on the cycle screen or under detergent settings.
Samsung-style controls
Samsung labels the controls Dose per Wash and, where available, Dose per Rinse. Select a level other than Off, then choose the available Low, Medium or High dose. Samsung also exposes detergent concentration choices of 1x, 2x or 3x. Those settings tell the machine how strong the liquid is; they are not extra wash-temperature settings.

LG-style controls
LG ezDispense models use a detergent button with three dosage levels. Select the desired level before starting the programme. Exact button names, icons and defaults can differ between models and regions.
What dose and concentration mean
Dose is the amount released for a wash. Concentration describes how much cleaning agent is contained in a given volume of liquid. Set concentration from the detergent label and the washer’s instructions. If a detergent is stronger than the highest concentration option, Samsung instructs users to reduce the dose as well; do not simply select the maximum amount.
How should I set detergent concentration and water hardness?
Start with the detergent maker’s recommended amount for your load and water conditions, then enter the corresponding concentration in the washer. AEG/Electrolux notes that water hardness and detergent type can require a dosage adjustment. Hard water generally needs a different setting from soft water, so use your local water utility’s hardness information or the value supplied with the appliance rather than guessing.
A practical setup check
- Read the detergent label for its base dose and concentration description.
- Check the washer manual for the concentration scale or supported product range.
- Enter the closest concentration option, such as 1x, 2x or 3x where those choices exist.
- Choose the dose level that corresponds to the load, soil level and programme.
- Reassess after a few washes if residue, poor cleaning or excessive suds indicate that the setting does not suit the product or water.
Do not compensate for an unsupported detergent by raising the dose. Switching to the product type specified by the manual is safer for the pump, fabrics and rinse performance.

Which wash programmes can use automatic dosing?
Start a cycle only after confirming that AutoDose is available for it. When a programme supports automatic dosing, the washer normally shows an AutoDose symbol or leaves the dose control active. Some specialist programmes require manual detergent instead.
Cycles that may require manual dosing
AEG/Electrolux gives wool as an example of a programme that may require manual detergent. Other models can restrict dosing for specialty treatments, prewash combinations or programmes whose instructions specify a different product. The cycle guide on the appliance, not a generic list, determines compatibility.

How to use a manual product safely
- Turn the detergent and softener AutoDose controls to Off for that cycle.
- Add the correct powder, pod or specialty liquid to the manual compartment or drum as the manual directs.
- Check that an automatic tank will not also dispense. Leaving AutoDose active can dose twice and create an overdose.
- Start the cycle and restore the automatic settings afterward if you want them for ordinary loads.
Can I use pods, powder or wool detergent in the AutoDose tank?
No. Automatic tanks are designed for the liquid products named in the washer manual. Samsung directs pods to the drum; LG cautions against powdered, ultra-concentrated and gel-type products in ezDispense tanks; AEG/Electrolux says not to put powder, pods or fragrance-based products in AutoDose dispensers; and Bosch i-Dos is intended for suitable liquid detergent and softener.

Never mix two detergents in one reservoir. If you change products, follow the model’s emptying and cleaning instructions first, then reset concentration and dose for the new liquid.

The washer monitors the remaining level or estimates it from dispensing and displays a refill message or indicator when a tank is low. LG support describes detection of the remaining detergent or softener and notification when refilling is needed. Samsung also provides tank-level notifications. Refill the indicated reservoir before starting another load, especially if the next programme is long or heavily soiled.
What if the indicator appears too soon?
Check that the tank was filled to MAX, the correct reservoir is being read and the drawer is seated fully. A high dose, frequent use, or a concentrated product entered with the wrong concentration setting can make the tank appear to empty faster than expected. If the message persists after a correct refill, consult the model’s support procedure rather than repeatedly adding liquid.
How do I clean and maintain an automatic dispenser?
Routine cleaning prevents dried detergent from narrowing the dispenser channel.
- Empty a tank before changing product or correcting a mix-up.
- Remove the drawer or reservoir parts only as the manual permits.
- Rinse tanks, caps and removable inserts with water; remove hardened residue gently.
- Dry or wipe the lid and surrounding drawer surfaces.
- Reassemble every part fully, then close the lids to limit evaporation.
- Run the washer’s dispenser-cleaning programme, if provided, following its instructions.
Do not pour cleaning chemicals into a detergent tank unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it. If detergent and softener were switched, LG advises emptying and thoroughly cleaning the affected tank before further use. Bosch likewise warns against mixing products and recommends manual dosing when intelligent dosing is unavailable.

What should I do when no detergent is dispensed?
Check the settings in this order:
- AutoDose is enabled: confirm the detergent dose is not set to Off.
- The programme supports it: look for the AutoDose symbol or consult the cycle table.
- The drawer is closed: push it fully home; LG identifies an open drawer as a reason dispensing may not operate.
- The tank contains usable liquid: inspect the level and look for hardened detergent or a blocked outlet.
- The product is compatible: powder, pods, gel and other restricted products can obstruct or disable the system.
- The reservoir is correctly installed: reseat the tank or drawer after cleaning.
If these checks do not restore dispensing, stop using the tank and follow the model-specific service instructions. Adding extra detergent manually while AutoDose may still be active risks dosing twice.
What should I do if I put the wrong product in a tank?
Stop the cycle if it is safe to do so, and do not add another product to dilute the mistake. Identify whether detergent entered the softener tank or an unsupported product entered either reservoir, then follow the model manual’s emptying and cleaning procedure. LG specifically says to empty and thoroughly clean a tank when detergent and softener have been switched.
After cleaning, check for residue in the drawer and outlet, refill with the permitted liquid and restore the correct concentration setting. If the product has thickened, formed clumps or reached internal tubing, contact the manufacturer before running more loads.

How can I avoid overdosing and residue?
Use one dosing method per load. If AutoDose is active, do not add a second dose to the manual compartment unless the manual explicitly requires it. Keep the concentration setting aligned with the bottle, use the lowest level that cleans the load adequately, and inspect the drawer when detergent dries or clumps.
Excess detergent can leave residue, create extra suds and require additional rinsing. Too little can leave soil behind. The correct setting depends on detergent strength, water hardness, programme, load and soil level—not simply on the washer’s maximum dose.

What is the safest everyday workflow?
- Keep an approved liquid detergent in the detergent reservoir and compatible softener in its own tank, if used.
- Check both levels before loading laundry.
- Select the programme and verify that AutoDose is available.
- Confirm dose and concentration settings for the product and water hardness.
- Start the cycle only after the drawer is fully closed.
- Respond to a low-level alert before the next load.

Can I switch detergent brands without emptying the AutoDose tank?
Do not assume different liquids can be mixed. Empty and clean the reservoir according to the washer manual, then enter the new product’s concentration and dose settings before washing.
Does every AI washer automatically weigh the laundry?
No. Some models use load-weight sensing, while others rely mainly on the selected programme and your dose settings. Check the specifications and manual for your exact model before expecting load-based adjustments.
Why is there still detergent left after the washer says the tank is empty?
The level indicator may be based on an estimate, and liquid can remain below the pickup point or in the outlet. Reseat the drawer, inspect for thickened residue and follow the model’s cleaning procedure before refilling.
Should I leave the detergent drawer open between washes?
Close reservoir lids after filling so liquid does not dry out. If the manufacturer recommends airing the outer drawer, follow that instruction without leaving an automatic tank lid open.
