AI can help you find gaps, suggest lemmas, translate informal mathematics into formal statements, and debug proof scripts—but an AI chat response is not a proof certificate. For dependable checking, put the proposed argument into a proof assistant such as Lean 4 with Mathlib, then let its trusted kernel accept or reject the resulting proof term. The practical workflow is therefore collaborative: use an LLM for exploration and explanation, and use a pinned formal environment as the acceptance gate. You must still verify that the formal theorem, definitions, hypotheses, imports, and axioms express the mathematics you intended.

Can AI check whether my mathematical proof is correct?

It can review reasoning and generate useful candidates, but it cannot certify correctness merely by producing a convincing explanation. Large language models may invent a lemma, overlook a hidden assumption, or prove a subtly different statement. A proof assistant checks a formal term against a theorem statement with a small trusted kernel; that check is much stronger than fluent prose, but it is conditional on the formalization being faithful to the original problem.

Formal systems provide computational models for manipulating formulas and deriving theorems through symbolic inference rules, as described by Communications of the ACM (2026). Lean, Coq, and Isabelle all implement this style of machine-checked reasoning. In Lean, tactics are elaborated into proof terms, and the kernel checks whether the term inhabits the declared proposition. If the term does not type-check, the proof is not accepted.

What an LLM is good at

  • Rewriting an informal claim into explicit definitions, hypotheses, and a conclusion.
  • Suggesting intermediate lemmas, tactics, counterexamples, or alternative proof strategies.
  • Explaining a type error or an unsolved goal in ordinary language.
  • Searching for likely library declarations and translating notation between prose and a prover.
  • Generating several small candidate steps that you can test independently.

What an LLM cannot establish by itself

  • That its explanation is logically valid.
  • That a cited theorem exists with the stated hypotheses.
  • That the symbols in a formal statement have the same meaning as the words in your paper or notes.
  • That an unmentioned axiom, import, or stronger-than-intended assumption has not changed the result.

How do I combine an AI assistant with a proof assistant?

Use the model as a fast, fallible collaborator and the prover as the acceptance gate. The following workflow keeps the human mathematical judgment and the machine-checking evidence separate.

1. State the claim precisely

Write down the intended domain, definitions, hypotheses, and conclusion before asking for tactics. Ask the model to list hidden assumptions and edge cases. For example, distinguish whether a variable ranges over natural numbers, integers, real numbers, or an arbitrary ordered structure; a statement that is true in one setting may be false in another.

Have the model propose a formal statement, but inspect every binder and quantifier yourself. A stronger theorem may look elegant while silently excluding the cases your informal argument was meant to cover.

2. Choose and pin the environment

Record the prover, library revision, operating system and toolchain, imported modules, and any declared axioms. A proof that succeeds in one library revision can fail after a declaration is renamed, a simplification rule changes, or a dependency is updated. Reproducibility requires more than saving the final paragraph of proof code.

Lean 4 with Mathlib is a practical starting point because its official learning resources cover formalization, tactics, searchable declarations, VS Code support, Loogle, LeanSearch, LeanDojo, a REPL, and browser-based tools. Isabelle or Coq may be the better choice when an existing project, course, or library already uses them.

3. Ask for small proof steps

Do not request an opaque, end-to-end script as your first prompt. Ask for one definition, one lemma, one tactic, or one counterexample at a time. Require the model to explain the goal shape it expects and the assumptions each step uses. Small proposals are easier to test, discard, and review.

4. Run every proposal in the prover

Copy the smallest candidate into the pinned environment and compile it. A successful chat response is only a suggestion; the checker’s output is the evidence. If the code fails, preserve the exact error and surrounding goal before asking the model for a diagnosis.

5. Treat failures as information

Separate type errors, unknown identifiers, unsolved goals, missing assumptions, and unexpected simplifier output. Ask the model to explain the specific failure, then change one thing at a time. If several edits are made together, you lose the ability to tell which change fixed the issue or introduced a new one.

6. Test the statement, not just the script

Try concrete examples, the negation of the claim, and weaker or stronger hypotheses. Counterexamples often reveal that a definition is not what the prose intended or that a theorem is overstrong. This testing phase is useful even when you ultimately want an abstract theorem.

7. Review the semantic match

A kernel can verify the formal proposition that was written; it cannot decide whether that proposition is the result you meant. Compare the final theorem with the original problem, check boundary cases, and confirm that every imported definition has the intended interpretation.

8. Preserve the evidence

Keep the source file, dependency versions, generated suggestions, final checker output, and a list of admitted or additional axioms. This record lets another person reproduce the check and makes later library upgrades auditable.

Why is Lean 4 with Mathlib a strong starting point?

Lean is described in its official documentation as “a functional programming language and theorem prover built for formalizing math and for formal verification.” Its ecosystem combines an interactive editor, automation, theorem search, and a large community library. That combination makes it suitable for learning as well as for substantial formalization projects.

Microsoft Research reports that the Lean community has digitized over half of the undergraduate mathematics curriculum and produced more than one million lines of code. Those are current figures from the project page, not an independent census, so treat them as an indication of library scale rather than a guarantee that every topic is covered.

When another prover makes more sense

Isabelle and Coq are credible alternatives with their own kernels, libraries, languages, and automation. If your department, employer, or existing development already depends on one of them, the cost of translating definitions and theorems may outweigh the benefits of switching. A tool’s practical value comes from the fit between its library and your project, not from a universal ranking.

What should I compare when choosing an AI proof workflow?

Compare the parts that determine whether a proof can be trusted, found, maintained, and reproduced.

Option Primary use What it contributes Important qualification
Lean 4 + Mathlib General mathematical formalization Interactive tactics, theorem search, IDE support, and kernel checking Proofs depend on the selected Lean and Mathlib revisions, imports, definitions, and axioms
Isabelle Alternative proof-assistant ecosystem Its own libraries, project conventions, and automation Choose it when those resources match the project or course
Coq Alternative proof-assistant ecosystem Its own formal language, libraries, and kernel-based checking Translation from existing informal or other-prover work has a cost
AI autoformalization and agents Translation and proof-step generation Large-language-model suggestions combined with symbolic reasoning Every generated declaration and proof must be checked in the underlying prover
Calculators and computer algebra systems Numerical or symbolic exploration Fast experimentation and algebraic manipulation They do not by themselves provide the same theorem-level proof certificate as a proof assistant

For each candidate, evaluate the logical foundation and trusted kernel, library maturity and search facilities, tactic and automation support, IDE ergonomics, version pinning, AI integration, and the effort needed to formalize your existing mathematics.

How do I prompt an AI to improve a proof without losing control?

Give the model the exact theorem statement, the current goal or error, the relevant imports, and the constraints it must respect. Ask it to distinguish certain facts from guesses and to return one change at a time.

Useful prompt patterns

  • Formalization: “Rewrite this claim with explicit domains, hypotheses, and conclusion. List any assumptions that are currently implicit.”
  • Library search: “Suggest declarations that might solve this goal. For each, state the expected type and the hypotheses it requires; do not invent names.”
  • Debugging: “Explain this exact error and current goal. Propose the smallest edit, then explain why it should change the goal.”
  • Counterexample search: “Try to refute the statement under these definitions. Check boundary values and degenerate cases before proposing a proof.”
  • Refactoring: “Replace this long tactic block with short lemmas, preserving the theorem statement and imports. Identify any changed assumptions.”

Ask for a plain-language explanation after the code, not instead of it. Require the model to identify which steps are library facts, which are generated suggestions, and which still need checking.

Can an LLM find a gap in an informal proof?

Often, yes: asking it to challenge each inference can expose an omitted case, an unjustified interchange of limits, a division by zero, or an assumption that was used without being stated. It is especially useful as a second reader because it can generate alternative interpretations and test simple examples quickly.

Its objections are hypotheses, not verdicts. The model can also invent a gap where a standard lemma applies or miss a subtle flaw. Convert any suspected issue into a precise proposition, counterexample, or formal subgoal and let the prover or a human mathematician settle it.

What can current AI-powered theorem-proving systems actually do?

Research systems are moving beyond single-line suggestions, but their reported achievements should be read as evaluations of particular systems, not guarantees for general-purpose chatbots.

Autoformalization projects

EPFL’s AI for Math project describes document-level autoformalization that combines large language models with automated symbolic reasoning to translate mathematics into Lean, and identifies LeanFlow as released software. Such systems can accelerate the translation stage, but each generated definition and proof still needs checking in Lean.

Competition-level results

Nature reported that AlphaProof solved three of the five non-geometry problems at the 2024 International Mathematical Olympiad. That is a result for that system and evaluation, not evidence that an ordinary conversational model will solve comparable problems reliably.

Large-scale company reports

Anthropic reports 11 days, 13 million lines of Lean, and 29,500 intermediate theorems in its Fermat’s Last Theorem report. These are company-reported figures; independent confirmation is needed before treating them as settled historical measurements.

What failure modes should I watch for?

  • Hallucinated lemmas: The model names a theorem that does not exist or has different hypotheses. Search the actual library and inspect the declaration’s type.
  • Silent strengthening: A generated statement adds positivity, finiteness, continuity, or decidability that makes the result easier but changes the problem.
  • Unintended definitions: A familiar word such as “limit,” “function,” or “set” may have a more specific formal meaning than the prose suggests.
  • Different theorem: The script proves a nearby proposition because variables were generalized, specialized, or bound in the wrong order.
  • Fragile automation: A tactic succeeds only because of a broad import or a particular simplifier configuration. Minimize imports and record them explicitly.
  • Unreviewed axioms: An admitted result or extra axiom can make the file compile without delivering the intended constructive or foundational guarantee.
  • Version drift: Library updates can rename declarations or alter automation. Pin versions and rerun the complete file after upgrades.

How do I know whether a checked proof matches the mathematics I intended?

Read the final theorem as if you had never seen the informal argument. Check every definition, quantifier, coercion, import, and axiom. Then compare it with examples that motivated the original claim and with cases at the boundary of the stated domain.

Separate three questions: does the proof term pass the kernel, is the formal statement mathematically meaningful, and does that statement answer the original question? Only the first is automated completely. The second and third require mathematical review.

What is the most reproducible way to use AI in a proof project?

Keep a versioned project containing the source files and environment metadata. Save the prompts or generated patches that materially influenced the proof, the final checker output, and a record of axioms or admitted theorems. When sharing results, state which prover and library revisions were used and whether the result depends on browser tooling, local automation, or external agents.

Review changes as you would review code: small commits, clear theorem names, tests for representative cases, and a complete rebuild from a clean environment. This practice makes an AI-assisted proof inspectable rather than a one-time conversation that cannot be reproduced.

Is AI-assisted formalization worth the effort?

It is worthwhile when the cost of a hidden error, a long-lived code base, or repeated verification exceeds the cost of formalization. AI reduces typing, search, and debugging time; the prover supplies a precise acceptance test; and the human remains responsible for the statement and interpretation. For exploratory calculations, a calculator or computer algebra system may be faster, but use a proof assistant when you need a theorem-level certificate and a durable record of assumptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use AI proof checking without installing a theorem prover?

Some Lean learning resources provide browser-based tools, so you can experiment without a full local setup. For a durable project, however, keep a pinned local or reproducible environment so that imports, versions, and generated output can be rebuilt later.

Should I disclose AI assistance in a mathematical paper?

Follow the venue’s authorship and software-disclosure rules. Regardless of policy, identify the prover and library versions, preserve the checked source, and describe any generated material that materially shaped the formalization so readers can reproduce the result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What mathematics is easiest to formalize first?

Start with a claim whose definitions and hypotheses are unambiguous and whose informal proof breaks into short lemmas. Elementary algebra, order arguments, and finite examples provide quick feedback before you tackle analysis or large structures with extensive coercions.

Can a proof assistant verify a theorem that uses an unproved axiom?

It can check a proof relative to that axiom, but the result is conditional rather than derived from the base foundations alone. Record every additional axiom and decide whether it is acceptable for your application.
