AI can turn your lecture notes, slides, and PDFs into draft flashcards and practice quizzes in minutes. The dependable method is a four-part workflow: prepare clean notes, ask the tool to use only those notes, verify every answer against the original material, and then schedule retrieval practice. NotebookLM can generate source-grounded flashcards and quizzes with topic and difficulty controls, while Microsoft Study and Learn can create flashcards, scored quizzes with explanations, matching activities, and fill-in-the-blank exercises from uploaded documents. Treat every output as a study draft rather than an authority: official education guidance says to check the tool’s approval status, understand its data practices, and fact-check its answers before studying from them.

What can AI make from my notes?

Generative-AI study tools can reorganize material you provide into questions, answers, explanations, and practice activities. Their value is not that they know your course better than your instructor; it is that they can convert passive notes into prompts that force you to retrieve information.

Flashcards

A flashcard has a cue on one side and an answer on the other. Good cards test one atomic idea: a definition, a step in a process, a cause-and-effect relationship, a comparison, or a worked application. A card that asks for an entire lecture in one answer is difficult to grade and difficult to review.

Practice quizzes

AI can turn the same source into multiple-choice, short-answer, scenario, matching, and fill-in-the-blank activities. Microsoft’s Study and Learn documentation describes scored quizzes with an explanation for each answer, as well as matching and fill-in-the-blank activities. Explanations are useful because they show why an option is correct, not merely which option to select.

What the tools do not guarantee

A fluent answer can still be incomplete, overgeneralized, or wrong. If your notes contain an ambiguous abbreviation, a typo, or two conflicting statements, the model may silently choose an interpretation. Source grounding reduces unsupported additions but does not remove the need for human checking.

How should I prepare notes before uploading them?

Preparation determines whether the generated cards are clear or noisy. Spend a few minutes making the source legible and separating topics before asking for questions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Remove duplicates. Delete repeated headings, copied slide footers, and unchanged versions of the same paragraph.
  2. Mark uncertainty. Expand or flag abbreviations you do not understand instead of letting the model guess what they mean.
  3. Separate subjects. Put distinct lectures, chapters, or units in clearly labeled sections. This makes it easier to request a quiz for one topic and to find the supporting passage later.
  4. Keep page or slide numbers. Preserve headings and page, slide, or section references so you can trace each answer back to its source.
  5. Remove material you are not allowed to share. Upload only notes, handouts, and documents you have permission to process. For school use, check the institution’s approved-tool list and its data-protection notice.

The UK Department for Education advises schools to understand how a generative-AI tool uses personal data and to fact-check its results. That means a personal account is not automatically appropriate for classmates’ names, student records, unpublished research, or other identifying information.

What prompt should I use to make source-grounded flashcards?

Tell the model exactly what counts as evidence, how to structure each card, and how to handle gaps. A constraint such as “do not add outside facts” is more useful than a vague request for “good flashcards.”

Using only the notes I provided, create 20 flashcards. Each card must test one atomic idea. Put the question first, then a concise answer, then the note page or section that supports it. Mark anything the notes do not establish as “not in source.” Mix definitions, processes, comparisons, and application questions. Do not add outside facts.

NotebookLM’s documented behavior is to generate flashcards and quizzes from uploaded documents while keeping them grounded in those sources. Google also documents controls for choosing a topic and a difficulty level. The announcement describing these capabilities was published in Google Workspace Updates on 11 September 2025.

Why require an evidence location?

A page, slide, or section reference turns checking into a quick comparison instead of a memory test. If the model cannot identify support, the “not in source” label tells you to consult the textbook or instructor rather than treating a plausible sentence as established course knowledge.

How should cards be phrased?

  • Ask one answerable question, such as “What is the first stage of the process?” rather than “Explain everything about the process.”
  • Prefer a concise answer that can be judged as right, partly right, or wrong.
  • Use the course’s terminology exactly, including symbols, units, spelling, and capitalization that carry meaning.
  • Request a mixture of definitions, sequences, comparisons, and applications so review is not limited to recognition.

How do I ask AI to create a practice quiz?

Specify the question types, the number of items, the feedback rule, and the evidence requirement. If you want genuine retrieval practice, do not ask for the answer immediately after each question.

Create a practice quiz from these notes: four multiple-choice questions, three short-answer questions, two application scenarios, and one “find the error” question. Give feedback only after I answer each item. Provide an answer key with a brief explanation tied to the relevant note section, and say when the notes are insufficient.

Choose question types for the skill you need

  • Multiple choice: useful for distinguishing similar concepts, provided the incorrect options represent realistic mistakes rather than jokes.
  • Short answer: tests whether you can produce a term, relationship, or sequence without seeing options.
  • Application scenario: asks you to transfer a principle to a new case while staying within the notes.
  • Find the error: presents a deliberately flawed statement and asks you to correct it; require the correction to be supported by the source.
  • Matching and fill-in-the-blank: efficient for terminology, categories, and paired relationships. Microsoft Study and Learn lists both activities among its documented study formats.

Prevent accidental answer leakage

Ask for one question at a time or place the answer key after a clear divider. If the tool reveals the explanation before you respond, copy the questions into a separate document or ask it to withhold feedback until you submit an answer.

How do I check whether AI-made cards are correct?

Verification is the non-negotiable stage. Read the original note passage for every card that matters, not just the cards that sound suspicious.

  1. Trace the claim. Compare the answer with the cited page, slide, or section. Confirm that the source actually says what the card claims.
  2. Check scope. Look for words such as “always,” “never,” “only,” or “causes.” AI often turns a qualified statement into an absolute one.
  3. Check terminology and notation. Correct misspellings, swapped symbols, units, dates, names, and similarly named structures.
  4. Check completeness. Add prerequisite ideas that your notes assume but the generated card skipped. A card can be factually true yet useless if it omits the condition under which the rule applies.
  5. Remove duplication. Delete cards that ask the same question with superficial wording changes.
  6. Split compound cards. If one answer contains two unrelated facts, make two cards. This lets you identify which part you actually remember.
  7. Flag uncertainty. Keep a card only if you can identify what is established, what is an interpretation, and what requires confirmation from an instructor or authoritative text.

The Department for Education explicitly says to fact-check generative-AI results and to check that a tool is approved for the setting. A confident tone is not evidence, and a source-grounded mode cannot correct an error already present in your notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do when the notes are incomplete?

Do not ask the model to fill the gap from general knowledge if your goal is course-faithful revision. Keep an explicit “not in source” marker, then consult the assigned reading or instructor and create a separate card whose source is clearly identified.

How should I practice the cards after checking them?

Use the cards for active recall: look at the question, answer without peeking, then rate how well you recalled it. Revisit missed or partly recalled items more often than cards you can answer easily.

Use a review system rather than a pile of prompts

Anki is a dedicated flashcard system with synchronized decks, media support, customizable layouts and review timing, and scheduled reviews intended to show a card when you are likely to forget it. Its current page lists desktop version 26.09.3, checked 26 October 2026. Anki is the review and scheduling layer; the supplied documentation does not establish that its desktop application generates AI cards, so import or enter only cards you have already checked.

Keep sessions short enough to stay honest

Stop when your attention degrades, record cards that required hints, and revisit those cards later. Changing the wording of a question can make a familiar answer feel new, but it does not replace checking whether you can explain the idea without the original phrasing.

Use media selectively

Images, diagrams, and audio can be valuable when the course depends on visual identification or pronunciation. Add them only when they test a learning objective; decorative media makes a deck slower without improving recall.

Which AI study tool fits my notes and practice goals?

The tools differ in what their official documentation promises. Choose based on source traceability, input formats, feedback, and review needs rather than on a generic claim that one model is “smarter.”

Tool Documented inputs or role Grounding and controls Practice features What is not stated in the cited documentation
NotebookLM Uploaded source documents Generates flashcards and quizzes grounded in uploaded materials; topic and difficulty can be customized. Interactive flashcards and quizzes. Specific export formats, account requirements, retention period, accessibility features, and institutional approval status.
Microsoft Study and Learn Documents, slides, and PDFs Creates activities from the material you provide. Flashcards; scored quizzes with explanations for answers; matching; fill-in-the-blank. Exact limits, export or synchronization behavior, retention period, and whether your school or employer approves its use.
Anki Dedicated flashcard decks rather than a documented note-to-quiz generator Customizable layouts and review timing; synchronized decks and media support. Scheduled reviews designed around likely forgetting. AI generation capabilities in the cited product information; privacy and institutional approval depend on your setup.

When is NotebookLM a good fit?

Use it when you want questions tied closely to a defined set of readings, lecture notes, or handouts and you want to adjust topic and difficulty. Keep the source set narrow enough that a citation points to the relevant passage rather than to an entire semester’s archive.

When is Study and Learn a good fit?

It is suited to mixed document collections because Microsoft documents support for documents, slides, and PDFs. Its varied activity types are useful when you want scored feedback, matching, or fill-in-the-blank practice in addition to conventional cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When is Anki a good fit?

Choose it after your cards are verified and you want synchronized decks, media, customizable review timing, and scheduled repetition. It is a practice system, not a reason to skip source checking.

How do privacy, age, and approval rules affect AI study tools?

Before uploading notes, determine who may access the material, how long it may be retained, whether it is used to improve a service, and whether your school or employer permits the tool. Use the least sensitive version of a document that still supports the learning task; remove names, student identifiers, private comments, and confidential research when they are not needed.

UNESCO’s guidance on generative AI in education was published on 7 September 2023 and updated on 16 January 2026. It notes that releases are outpacing many regulatory frameworks and calls for privacy protection, age limits for independent conversations, and human-centred, age-appropriate validation. Its guidance states: “Based on a humanistic vision, the Guidance proposes key steps to the regulation of GenAI tool, including mandating the protection of data privacy, and setting an age limit for the independent conversations with GenAI platforms.”

The Department for Education describes generative AI as a possible starting point for lesson plans, activities, questions, quizzes, and revision activities, not as a substitute for professional judgment. Its guidance says: “In a school, generative AI (artificial intelligence) tools can be used as a starting point to develop resources, including: lesson plans or activities; questions and quizzes; revision activities.” Follow your local policy on disclosure, consent, age limits, and data processing.

What are the most common failure modes and fixes?

The cards contain facts that never appeared in the notes

Reissue the prompt with “using only the notes” and require a supporting section for every answer. Delete anything labeled “not in source” unless you later verify it from an approved reference.

One card tests too much

Ask for atomic ideas and split answers containing multiple independent claims. A shorter answer is easier to grade and schedule.

Questions are all definitions

Request a deliberate mix of definitions, processes, comparisons, applications, and error correction. Definitions check recognition; application questions reveal whether you can use the concept.

Multiple-choice options make the answer obvious

Ask for distractors based on common misconceptions and require similar length and grammatical form. During checking, ensure only one option is supported by the notes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The quiz rewards guessing

Answer without looking at the key, delay explanations until after submission, and add short-answer or scenario items. A score is meaningful only when you can explain why your answer follows from the source.

Conflicting notes produce a single overconfident answer

Ask the tool to list contradictions with the section or date for each statement. Preserve the context rather than forcing a reconciliation, then ask your instructor or consult the authoritative reading.

Can I combine AI generation with handwritten or offline review?

Yes. After verification, print a small selection or write cards by hand for a commute, lab bench, or screen-free session. Blank index cards are useful for this optional step, but the physical format does not remove the need to check the answer against the original notes. Keep one authoritative digital or paper deck so corrections are not lost across copies.

What does a reliable upload-to-practice workflow look like?

Use this sequence each time you study a new unit:

  1. Prepare: clean the notes, separate topics, preserve page or slide references, and remove material you cannot share.
  2. Generate cards: use a source-only prompt, request atomic questions, and require evidence locations plus a “not in source” label.
  3. Generate a quiz: mix question types, withhold the key until you answer, and request explanations tied to the notes.
  4. Verify: trace every important answer, correct terminology, split compound cards, and delete duplicates.
  5. Practice: answer from memory, rate recall honestly, and revisit missed items on a schedule.
  6. Update: when an instructor corrects or expands the material, edit the source and the affected cards rather than creating an untracked duplicate deck.

This process keeps AI in the role it performs best here: converting organized material into varied retrieval prompts while a human remains responsible for accuracy, context, privacy, and decisions about what to learn.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it acceptable to use AI-generated quizzes for assessed coursework?

That depends on your institution’s academic-integrity and disclosure rules. Use AI for private revision unless your instructor explicitly permits it for an assignment, and disclose assistance when the policy requires it.

Should I upload a recording or notes that contain classmates’ names?

Remove names and other identifiers unless they are essential to the learning task and your institution has approved the processing. Anonymizing a document before upload is safer than relying on a service’s default privacy settings.

How many flashcards should I make from one lecture?

There is no universally correct count. Stop adding cards when each examinable idea is represented clearly; then prune duplicates and prioritize concepts your instructor emphasizes or that you repeatedly miss.

What should I do if my lecture notes contradict the textbook?

Keep the two claims separate and label each with its source and context. Ask the instructor which version governs assessment instead of letting an AI tool silently merge them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I assume a tool works offline or keeps my deck private?

No. Offline access, retention, synchronization, and account behavior vary by product and setting and are not established by the capabilities listed here. Read the current service or institutional privacy documentation before uploading sensitive material.
