Use an AI research agent as a fast research assistant—not as an authority. It can turn a broad question into a plan, search across sources, compare findings and draft a report, but it may still produce confident errors, omit contrary evidence or invent citations. The safe workflow is to define the assignment precisely, require a claim-to-source evidence record, open and check every important citation, corroborate consequential claims independently, preserve an audit trail and have a qualified person approve the final work.

What is an AI research agent, and why does verification matter?
An AI research agent combines a language model with search, browsing or file-analysis tools. Instead of answering from a single prompt, it can break a question into subtopics, run multiple searches, open documents, extract passages, compare claims and assemble a cited report. That makes it useful for landscape scans, literature reviews, policy monitoring, product documentation and other tasks where the first challenge is finding relevant material.
The same autonomy creates risk. An agent can misunderstand the assignment, rely on a secondary page when a primary record exists, treat an outdated page as current, combine facts from different jurisdictions or generate a citation that looks plausible but does not exist. A citation icon or bibliography is therefore a lead to inspect, not proof that the sentence is true.

OpenAI’s help guidance cautions that ChatGPT can be helpful but is not always right. The UK House of Commons Library expresses the operational rule more directly: AI should be treated as an assistant, not an authority. Your process should make it possible to show what the agent found, where it found it and how each conclusion follows from the evidence.
How do I define an assignment before the agent searches?
Start with a written brief. A precise brief prevents the agent from filling gaps with assumptions and gives a reviewer a standard against which to judge the final report.

State what you need: for example, a regulatory briefing, a comparison of technical approaches or a list of unresolved questions. Ask the agent to propose a research plan before it searches. OpenAI’s Deep Research documentation describes a workflow in which the user states the desired outcome, reviews or modifies a proposed plan and then receives a structured report with citations or source links.
Set scope and definitions
- Audience: identify who will use the result and how much technical context they have.
- Geography and jurisdiction: name the country, state, regulator or market. A rule or statistic may not transfer across borders.
- Date range: give a publication window and say whether the agent must check the latest update.
- Definitions: explain ambiguous terms, product categories, populations or measurement units.
- Source policy: list acceptable source types, such as statutes, regulator notices, standards, official statistics, peer-reviewed research, vendor documentation or primary datasets.
- Output format: request a claim table, source excerpts, uncertainty labels and a list of open questions in addition to prose.
Ask the agent to state its assumptions and to flag anything it cannot establish. A clear “not found” is more useful than plausible wording that has no evidence.
How does agentic search work, and where can it go wrong?
Agentic search normally follows a loop: plan, search, open sources, extract evidence, compare findings and draft. The loop is valuable because it explores several angles, but every stage can introduce a failure.
- Planning: the agent turns your brief into search questions. If the scope is vague, the plan may silently narrow the population, date or geography.
- Discovery: search results identify candidate pages. Ranking favors relevance and popularity, not necessarily authority or accuracy.
- Reading: the agent opens pages or files and summarizes them. It may miss a footnote, table note, exception, update notice or passage that changes the meaning.
- Synthesis: it combines evidence into claims. This is where incompatible definitions, dates or jurisdictions can be blended.
- Citation: it attaches links or references. A link can be broken, fabricated, mismatched or too weak for the wording used.
- Drafting: fluent prose can hide uncertainty. Read the evidence record, not only the polished narrative.
Anthropic describes its research feature as agentic multi-search behavior that explores angles and open questions, with citations that can be checked when web search is enabled. General web search remains useful for current or niche facts, but search results and their citations can be incomplete, outdated or incorrect until you open and inspect the linked source.

How do I verify AI research sources?
Use this checklist for every material claim. For low-stakes background, you can sample; for a decision, publication or safety-sensitive statement, check every consequential claim.
- Open the cited source yourself. Do not rely on the agent’s summary, title or snippet.
- Find the exact passage, table or data row. Confirm that the source actually states the claim rather than merely discussing a related subject.
- Check wording and scope. Match the population, definition, unit, date, geography, edition and conditions. A source may support “in this survey” but not “in general.”
- Read surrounding context. Inspect footnotes, exclusions, methodology, confidence limits, corrections and update notices. Make sure the agent did not selectively truncate the passage.
- Check provenance. Identify the author or institution, publication date, update date and whether the page is an original record or a summary.
- Test the URL. If the page is missing, the title and author cannot be found, or the link resolves to unrelated content, remove the claim until you locate real evidence.
- Record the result. Mark the claim confirmed, disputed, stale or unresolved, and save the passage and access date in your audit trail.
OpenAI specifically recommends checking whether a cited source supports the answer and reviewing its publication or update date. Its guidance also lists fabricated quotes, studies, citations and references among known failure modes.
How do I trace a claim to original evidence?
Use secondary pages to discover leads, then follow them back to the document that created the fact. University of Illinois SIFT-for-AI guidance calls this “Trace to original evidence.”
Prefer sources in an authority order
- Statutes, court decisions, regulator notices and official standards.
- Official statistics, administrative records and primary datasets.
- Peer-reviewed studies and their supplementary data.
- Vendor documentation for claims about that vendor’s own product or service.
- Reputable secondary analysis, used mainly to identify leads or explain context.
The authority order is not absolute. A primary source can be outdated, incomplete or outside your jurisdiction. Record why a source is appropriate for the particular claim, and use a second source when the consequence of error is high.
Split broad statements into atomic claims
“The policy reduces costs and improves access nationwide” contains several claims about an intervention, an outcome, a comparison and a geography. Ask the agent to split it into individually testable statements. Each statement should have evidence strong enough to carry its own burden; one citation at the end of a paragraph is not enough when the paragraph makes several assertions.
Can I trust an AI research agent’s citations?
You can trust a citation only after it passes the source check. The presence of a link is not evidence that the link exists, that the source is authoritative or that it supports the exact sentence.

Signs of a citation problem
- The URL returns an error, redirects to an unrelated page or has no matching title or author.
- The cited passage supports a narrower population, date or conclusion than the report claims.
- The source is a commentary that repeats an uncited assertion instead of presenting the underlying data.
- A quotation cannot be found verbatim, or punctuation and wording change its meaning.
- The page has been superseded, corrected or updated after the agent accessed it.
How to handle a failed citation
Search for the exact title, author and distinctive phrase. If no genuine source exists, delete the claim rather than replacing the link with a guess. If the source exists but does not support the wording, narrow the claim, find better evidence or label it unresolved. Never preserve a persuasive sentence merely because it fits the narrative.
How should I compare research-agent tools?
Feature names and plan limits change, so compare the workflow you can verify at the time of use rather than relying on a permanent product ranking.

Evaluate source transparency, citation correctness, search freshness, breadth, domain controls, reproducibility, audit-trail support and the ease of qualified human review. Recheck feature availability and plan limits before relying on them for a production workflow.
How do I triangulate consequential claims?
For claims that affect money, safety, compliance, health, public communication or a major decision, compare the agent’s result with an independent source or a non-AI baseline. Look actively for conflict instead of collecting only confirming pages.
Use an evidence challenge
- Ask the agent to produce the strongest contrary evidence and explain which assumptions would make it persuasive.
- Compare definitions, samples, dates, methods and jurisdictions rather than counting citations.
- Check whether the evidence is complete. NIST’s evaluation work calls this the completeness question: does the output preserve the source’s full message, including limitations?
- Check sufficiency: does the evidence actually carry the burden of the claim, or is a descriptive source being used to prove causation?
- Ask a subject expert to review the evidence and the interpretation, not merely the grammar.
NIST frames the goal as moving beyond “the AI said so” to understanding what the AI found, where it found it and how the evidence supports the conclusions. Agreement between two AI systems is not independent corroboration; both may inherit the same source or error.
What should be in a reproducible research audit trail?
Keep enough information for another person to reconstruct the work and challenge a conclusion. Store the original prompt and any revised brief, the agent’s proposed plan, search steps, source URLs, excerpts, publication and access dates, model or tool settings, conflicts, confidence labels and unresolved questions.

Keep the report and audit trail together. If a source later changes, you can show which version supported the published wording and decide whether an update is required.

Fabricated sources or quotations
Search the exact title, author and URL. If the source or quote cannot be located, remove it. Do not ask the agent to “make the citation more realistic.”
Citation mismatch
Read the passage and compare the precise population, date, geography and wording. Narrow the claim or replace the source when the evidence is only partial.
Cherry-picking
Request contrary evidence, inspect omitted results and apply NIST’s completeness test. A report that lists only supportive findings is not balanced simply because it has many citations.
Overclaiming
Break broad conclusions into atomic claims and require sufficient evidence for each. Distinguish correlation from causation and description from prediction unless the source establishes the stronger statement.
Stale information
Record publication and update dates, search again for the current version and prefer current official pages when facts are volatile. Preserve the older version when it explains what was known at the time.
Automation bias
Do not treat fluent prose, a high confidence label or agreement between agents as proof. Use an independent source or non-AI check and qualified human review.
How do I record uncertainty and complete human review?
Use explicit labels rather than burying uncertainty in vague language. Confirmed means the source directly supports the stated claim and its scope. Disputed means credible sources conflict. Stale means the evidence may once have applied but needs a current check. Unresolved means the available evidence cannot carry the claim.

- Request a plan: ask the agent to list subquestions, assumptions, search strategy and likely evidence gaps before browsing.
- Set evidence requirements: require exact URLs, passages, dates, applicability notes and confidence for each material claim.
- Run the research: allow the agent to search and synthesize, but save progress, files and settings when available.
- Trace to originals: replace discovery pages with statutes, official data, standards, primary studies or authoritative documentation where possible.
- Verify citations: open every important link, read context and test the exact wording, date and jurisdiction.
- Triangulate: seek independent or contrary evidence for consequential claims and investigate conflicts.
- Review and label: mark each claim confirmed, disputed, stale or unresolved; obtain qualified human review.
- Publish with an audit trail: retain prompts, plans, sources, excerpts, dates, decisions and unresolved questions so the work can be revisited.
This process preserves the speed advantage of an agent while keeping factual responsibility with the human researcher and editor.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many independent sources are enough for an important claim?
There is no universal count. Use the consequence of an error, the strength of the primary evidence and the level of disagreement to decide; a single authoritative record may be stronger than several copied summaries, while a contested claim may require multiple independent sources and expert review.
What should I do when a source has no publication or update date?
Treat the date as unknown, record that limitation and look for a dated version, archive or independent authoritative source. Do not describe an undated page as current merely because it is still online.
Is agreement between two AI research agents proof that a claim is true?
No. Both systems may have copied the same source, inherited the same omission or generated the same plausible error. Independent evidence and a human check are what establish support.
Can I reuse an old AI-generated research report?
Reuse its claim map as a starting point, not as current evidence. Reopen volatile sources, check for revised editions or corrections and update the status and access date for every material claim.
What does a reviewer need to see before approving the report?
Give the reviewer the final atomic claims, exact source links, relevant passages, dates, applicability notes, conflicts, uncertainty labels and the decisions made when evidence was missing or contradictory.
