Use an AI reasoning model as a disciplined generator and critic, not as an authority. The reliable loop is: normalize the exact problem, request several candidate strategies under an explicit output contract, run a separate adversarial verification pass, test small and boundary cases, and then rewrite the surviving idea as a proof that another person—or a proof assistant—can check. This method can save time on exploration and expose useful lemmas, but fluent text is not evidence of correctness. Published systems have reached medal-level scores on particular International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) evaluations, while other expert-created tests remain extremely difficult, so every solution still needs mathematical ownership by the reader.
What can an AI reasoning model actually do on an olympiad problem?
A reasoning model is most useful for search, comparison and criticism. It can restate a dense statement, suggest invariants or extremal arguments, generate algebraic transformations, look for counterexamples and explain a proof draft in more accessible language. It can also make the wrong idea sound polished, silently assume a variable is nonzero, or lose a case when a quantifier changes from “there exists” to “for every.”

That makes the model a reasoning partner rather than a substitute for a solver or a jury. Ask it to expose assumptions and dependencies, but do not ask it to reveal private hidden chain-of-thought or treat a long internal narrative as verification. A short, checkable plan, named lemmas and explicit case boundaries are more useful than pages of unstructured reasoning.
| Use the model for | Do not outsource |
|---|---|
| Normalizing notation and listing constraints | Deciding that an unproved claim is a theorem |
| Generating materially different approaches | Checking every implication, equality case and domain restriction |
| Finding likely lemmas, substitutions and invariants | Assuming a numerical pattern proves a universal statement |
| Producing small-case code or symbolic experiments | Hiding computational assumptions or silently changing the problem |
| Auditing a proof in a fresh conversation | Calling a proof “formal” unless a proof assistant accepts it |
How do I prepare an olympiad problem for an AI model?
Start with a literal, lossless statement. Most failures begin before the model tries to solve anything: a diagram fact is omitted, a domain is unclear, or “positive integers” becomes “real numbers.” Spend a minute creating a normalized version that the model can quote back.

1. Copy every mathematical condition
- Include the complete statement, all subparts, and any diagram-defined incidences, orientations or equal lengths.
- State the domain of every symbol: integers, positive integers, real numbers, points on a circle, and so on.
- Specify whether variables may be zero, whether objects may coincide, and whether an ordering such as a < b is assumed.
- For geometry, describe the diagram in words as well as attaching it. A model should not have to infer that an angle is directed or that a point lies on a segment rather than its extension.
2. Define the requested output
Say whether the task is to find all values, prove an inequality, construct an object, count configurations, or classify equality. “Solve” is not a sufficient contract. If a numerical answer is required, ask for a proof of uniqueness; if a construction is required, ask for existence and verification of every stated property.
3. Ask for a restatement before a solution
Have the model restate the problem and list assumptions in a compact block. Compare that block with the original. Correcting a lost condition at this stage is much cheaper than debugging a proof built on the wrong domain.
How do I prompt an AI reasoning model without sacrificing rigor?
Give the model a goal, constraints and an output contract. OpenAI’s published reasoning guidance describes “reasoning effort” as a control: higher settings generally permit more internal work but increase latency and token use. Start moderately for exploration, raise the setting when a problem has many cases or a deep search, and record the setting, elapsed time and any usage limit if you need reproducible results.
A practical prompt is:
You are helping with an olympiad-style mathematics problem.
Problem:
[Paste the exact statement, including domains and diagram facts.]
Deliverables:
1. Restate the problem with every assumption explicit.
2. Propose up to three distinct strategies and name the key lemma for each.
3. Develop the most promising strategy into a complete proof.
4. Check boundary cases, hidden divisions, quantifiers and whether each implication is reversible.
5. List claims that still require independent verification.
Do not present a conjecture as a theorem. Keep exploration separate from the final proof. Do not omit cases merely because a pattern appears in examples.
The instruction to keep exploration separate matters. It lets you discard attractive dead ends without confusing them with established steps. Asking for “the answer” alone encourages the model to optimize for a plausible-looking conclusion rather than a traceable argument.
How do I make the model generate genuinely different strategies?
Request two or three approaches that differ in mathematical mechanism, not three paraphrases of the same manipulation. Ask the model to explain what each strategy would preserve and where it might fail.
Useful strategy families
- Invariant: identify a quantity unchanged by the allowed operation, move or transformation.
- Extremal: choose a largest, smallest or otherwise minimal counterexample and derive a contradiction from its structure.
- Algebraic: factor, substitute, bound or transform the expression while tracking equality conditions.
- Combinatorial: count the same set in two ways, use a bijection, or apply a pigeonhole argument.
- Geometric: search for cyclicity, similar triangles, directed angles, isogonal lines, inversion or an auxiliary construction.
For each proposed route, require a “why this could work” paragraph and a list of obligations. For example, an inequality approach must identify the domain of every denominator and when equality can occur; a counting argument must define the counted objects and prove that each is counted exactly once. Prefer the strategy with the fewest unverified bridges, not the one with the longest explanation.

Which model is best for IMO-style mathematics?
There is no universal winner. Choose according to the task: a general reasoning model is convenient for drafting and tutoring, a geometry-specialized neuro-symbolic system may be stronger on construction-heavy diagrams, and a formal-proof system is preferable when a machine-checkable certificate is required. Published scores are not directly comparable unless you account for the problem set, time limit, language translation, manual formalization and computation budget.
| Need | Most suitable system type | Strength | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Explore an unfamiliar problem | General reasoning model | Fast restatement, strategy generation and explanation | May hallucinate lemmas or skip cases; human checking is mandatory |
| Construction-heavy Euclidean geometry | Geometry-specialized neuro-symbolic system | Combines learned construction proposals with symbolic deduction | Narrower coverage and less convenient interaction than a chat model |
| Machine-checkable theorem | Formal-proof workflow using Lean or another proof assistant | Accepted proofs are checked by a kernel | Formalization takes time; informal insight still has to be translated |
| Teaching or rewriting a finished proof | General language model with a strict editing contract | Can define notation and expose the key idea clearly | Editing can accidentally alter a quantifier or hypothesis |
One reported reference point is OpenAI’s o1 announcement: 89th-percentile performance on Codeforces and a placement in the top 500 of a USA Math Olympiad qualifier. Those results indicate useful capability, not a guarantee on your particular problem.
What do the published olympiad results really show?
The strongest public results are impressive but tightly scoped. Google DeepMind reported that AlphaGeometry solved 25 of 30 IMO-AG-30 geometry problems in 2024. Its neural component proposed constructions while a symbolic engine checked deductions, which explains why its output could be unusually verifiable. Geometry coach and Olympiad gold medalist Evan Chen described the output as impressive because it was “both verifiable and clean” and used classical rules such as angles and similar triangles.
For the 2024 IMO, Google DeepMind reported a combined AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry score of 28 out of 42, equivalent to the top end of the silver-medal category. The pipeline involved manual formalization, and some solutions required days of computation. That is not the same operating condition as pasting a new problem into a consumer chat interface.

The report quoted IMO President Gregor Dolinar calling the solutions clear, precise and mostly easy to follow. Again, the result belongs to that system, evaluation and compute setup; it does not establish that every deployed version will reproduce it.
| Reported result | What it measured | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 25/30 | AlphaGeometry on IMO-AG-30 geometry problems | Google DeepMind, 2024; specialized neuro-symbolic pipeline |
| 28/42 | Combined AlphaProof and AlphaGeometry on IMO 2024 | Google DeepMind, 2024; manual formalization and some multi-day computation |
| 35/42 | Gemini Deep Think on IMO 2025 | Google DeepMind, 2025; reported natural-language proofs within contest time |
| Less than 2% | Leading models on Epoch AI’s expert-crafted FrontierMath problems | Epoch AI, 2024; warns against inferring broad ability from familiar benchmarks |
The contrast with FrontierMath is essential: leading models solved less than 2% of its expert-crafted problems in the reported 2024 evaluation. Benchmark difficulty, contamination, tool access and grading rules all matter. Treat scores as evidence about a particular system under stated conditions, not as a probability that your unsolved problem will yield.

How do I separate solution generation from verification?
Use a new turn—or, preferably, a new conversation—with only the proposed proof and the original statement. Fresh context reduces the chance that the model protects an earlier mistake simply because it generated it.
Audit the proof below as a skeptical olympiad jury.
Check every inference, omitted case, use of a lemma and equality condition.
Look for hidden division by zero, an invalid change of quantifier, an implication used in the reverse direction, and a counterexample to any claimed equivalence.
If the proof is valid, restate its critical dependencies.
If it is not valid, identify the first failing line. Propose a repair only if the repair is justified by the stated hypotheses.
Do not grade style; grade correctness.
Original problem:
[statement]
Proposed proof:
[proof]
Ask the auditor to return a line-by-line list of obligations. Then check those obligations yourself. A second model can provide another opinion, but agreement between two models is not an independent mathematical proof if both rely on the same faulty pattern.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow should I test edge cases and computationally probe a conjecture?
Small computation is a filter for false ideas, not a proof of a universal claim. Ask the model to generate transparent code or symbolic steps, keep the domain and bounds visible, and inspect the output yourself.
Enumeration checklist
- Test the smallest legal values, including zero when the statement permits it.
- Include equality and near-equality cases in inequalities.
- Try repeated values, symmetric configurations and degenerate geometric positions that are still allowed.
- Search beyond the examples that suggested the conjecture; a pattern fitted to ten cases can fail at eleven.
- Record whether the program checks all objects or samples randomly, and state any bound that limits the search.
For algebra, a computer algebra system can factor an expression or verify an identity under stated assumptions. It cannot infer those assumptions safely: a simplifier may cancel a factor that can be zero or use an identity valid only over the reals. For combinatorics, enumeration can reveal a counterexample and suggest a recurrence, but the recurrence still needs a proof.
When should I use Lean or another proof assistant?
Use a proof assistant when the result must be machine-checkable, when a long argument has many dependent lemmas, or when you want a durable verification artifact. Formal systems force every type, coercion and hypothesis into the open. They are especially valuable after an informal strategy is stable; formalizing a conjecture that is still changing can consume more time than solving it.
A practical formalization sequence
- Write the informal proof with every definition and dependency explicit.
- Choose a library representation for numbers, finite sets, vectors, metric spaces or geometric objects.
- State the main theorem and smaller lemmas in the assistant before attempting tactics.
- Translate one lemma at a time, compiling after each change. When a tactic fails, determine whether the mathematics or only the syntax is wrong.
- Keep computational experiments separate from the formal proof unless they are themselves verified inside the assistant.
- Preserve the accepted source, environment version and any imported libraries so another person can reproduce the check.
AlphaProof’s reported pipeline illustrates the distinction: it used Lean formalization, candidate-answer generation, automated refutation and test-time reinforcement learning to search for formal proofs. A formal artifact is stronger evidence than a persuasive paragraph, but it does not remove the need to confirm that the encoded theorem is the intended olympiad problem.

What are the most common failure modes?
The model changes the problem
Symptom: a condition disappears in the restatement, or a point is treated as lying inside a triangle when the statement allows an extension. Fix: compare the model’s normalized statement with the original before accepting any strategy.
A conjecture is presented as a lemma
Symptom: “clearly,” “by symmetry” or “it is well known” hides the central step. Fix: ask for the exact lemma, its hypotheses and a proof or a clearly marked verification task.
Division or cancellation is invalid
Symptom: a denominator, determinant, slope or geometric length is canceled without proving it is nonzero. Fix: split the zero case first and carry the restriction into every later line.
Numerical evidence is mistaken for proof
Symptom: a formula is declared universal after testing a few integers or diagrams. Fix: use computation to search for counterexamples, then replace the pattern with an argument covering the full domain.
Equality conditions vanish
Symptom: an inequality chain reaches the target but never establishes when each bound is tight. Fix: annotate equality conditions at the moment each inequality is applied and intersect them at the end.
Quantifiers silently reverse
Symptom: “for every configuration there exists” becomes “there exists one configuration for every case,” or a construction is shown only for a generic position. Fix: write the quantifiers in symbols and test degenerate and boundary cases separately.
Best Value
Exploration leaks into the final proof
Symptom: the published solution contains abandoned substitutions, contradictory claims or unexplained computer output. Fix: retain the exploration log privately, then rewrite the proof with notation defined once and the key idea stated before technical details.
What is a repeatable end-to-end workflow?
- Normalize: paste the exact statement, domains, diagram facts and requested output.
- Contract: request a restatement, up to three distinct strategies, named lemmas, explicit assumptions and a separate final proof.
- Set effort: begin moderately; increase effort for broad case splits or deep search, recording latency and token or compute limits.
- Generate: ask for invariant, extremal, algebraic, combinatorial or geometric alternatives where appropriate.
- Select: choose the route with the clearest obligations and fewest unsupported bridges, not the longest response.
- Probe: enumerate small cases or use symbolic algebra to hunt counterexamples while keeping code and assumptions visible.
- Audit: move the candidate proof to a fresh turn and ask for the first invalid inference, omitted case, hidden zero division or quantifier error.
- Formalize when needed: encode the theorem and lemmas in Lean or another assistant if an independently checkable result is required.
- Rewrite: remove dead ends, define notation once, explain the central idea, and preserve a record of computational or formal verification.
This loop gives the model useful freedom during discovery while keeping the final standard human-checkable. It also makes failure informative: a counterexample, a rejected lemma or a formalization error tells you exactly which part of the proposed solution needs work.
How should I report an AI-assisted solution responsibly?
Name the model or system, date and relevant setting when those details affect reproducibility. State whether a diagram was manually formalized, whether external tools were used, the time or compute budget, and which parts were checked by a proof assistant. Do not describe a benchmark medal score as evidence that the model solved your new problem, and do not claim machine verification when only a language-model critique was performed.
A responsible final write-up contains the problem statement, a clean proof, definitions of every symbol, explicit case coverage and equality conditions. If computation found a pattern, label it as motivation or a check and provide the mathematical argument separately.
What should I remember when using AI for olympiad mathematics?
- The model’s highest-value role is generating and attacking ideas; mathematical responsibility remains with the reader.
- Clear constraints and an output contract usually improve reliability more than demanding a hidden reasoning transcript.
- Generation and verification should be separate passes, ideally with fresh context.
- Small-case code can expose errors, while Lean-style formalization can produce a machine-checkable artifact at additional setup cost.
- Benchmark scores are system-, task- and compute-dependent; always report those qualifications.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can an AI model give a fully rigorous olympiad proof?
It can sometimes produce a correct proof, but fluency is not a certificate. Require an independent audit, check every domain restriction and equality case yourself, and use a proof assistant when machine-level verification is required.
Should I ask the model to show its chain of thought?
No. Ask for a concise plan, explicit assumptions, named lemmas, case coverage and a checkable final proof instead. Those deliverables are easier to audit and avoid treating hidden internal reasoning as evidence.
How can I tell whether two AI solutions are genuinely independent?
Give the second system only the original problem and the first proof, then ask it to search for counterexamples rather than imitate the derivation. Agreement is still not proof if both systems share the same mistaken assumption or training pattern.
Is a formal proof assistant practical for a student?
It is practical for a focused theorem or a result that must be machine-checkable, but learning the library and encoding definitions takes time. A good compromise is to use informal AI exploration first and formalize only the stable lemmas and final theorem.
Why can a model score highly on an IMO test yet fail my problem?
Scores depend on the exact problems, timing, language translation, tools, manual formalization and compute budget. Expert-created evaluations such as FrontierMath have reported less than 2% success for leading models, showing that familiar benchmark performance does not measure universal mathematical ability.
