AI can accelerate PCB design, but it cannot replace engineering judgment. The safe pattern is to define electrical, mechanical, safety, and manufacturing requirements first; encode those limits in the ECAD rule system; then use AI for bounded drafts, scripts, alternatives, and documentation. Keep ERC and DRC checks active while the design changes, run a complete pre-release check, inspect every exception, and require a named engineer to review and approve the release. A clean automated report only proves that the enabled rules passed—it does not prove that the requirements, components, thermal design, or safety decisions are correct.
What role should AI play in a PCB project?
Use AI as a constrained design assistant, not as an unsupervised electrical engineer. It is useful for repetitive work and for generating options that a human can evaluate against authoritative project data.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Drafting: propose schematic blocks, net-class definitions, placement concepts, routing strategies, and review checklists.
- Automation: write ECAD scripts, apply bounded edits, rename or annotate items, and generate reports or design documentation.
- Exploration: produce several placement or layer-assignment alternatives so the team can compare trade-offs.
- Maintenance: identify affected nets after a component change and prepare a list of files or rules that need review.
The model should work inside the project context, with the current schematic, board, libraries, rule files, stack-up, and manufacturing limits supplied as the authority. Every request should have a defined boundary and an expected output. For example, asking for three placement alternatives for a specified connector and keep-out area is safer than asking an agent to optimize the entire board.
AI output is a proposal until it has been checked against the design contract, manufacturer data, project libraries, and engineering analysis. Keep the original files, record the prompt or task description where your process requires it, and review a readable diff rather than accepting an opaque replacement of the project.

How do you write a design contract before asking AI for help?
Start with a written design contract that states what the board must do and the limits it must obey. This document becomes the reference for prompts, rule configuration, reviews, and release approval.
Electrical behavior and interfaces
- List every power rail, nominal and permitted voltage, maximum current, startup behavior, and protection requirement.
- Define digital, analog, RF, and mixed-signal interfaces, including connector pinouts, protocols, data rates, edge-rate assumptions, and required termination.
- State clock tolerances, timing budgets, impedance targets, differential-pair requirements, and any noise or emissions limits.
- Identify safety-related nets, isolation boundaries, hazardous voltages, and the required creepage and clearance values.
Mechanical and environmental requirements
- Specify the board outline, thickness, layer count or stack-up constraints, mounting holes, keep-outs, connector locations, and enclosure clearances.
- Record operating and storage temperature, humidity, vibration, ingress exposure, altitude, and expected service life.
- Define thermal limits for components and the enclosure, including where heat may leave the board and where copper or a heat spreader is permitted.
Supply, compliance, and production constraints
- List approved manufacturers or part families, lifecycle expectations, acceptable substitutions, and forbidden substitutions.
- State the assembly process—surface-mount, through-hole, mixed technology, hand rework, or automated assembly—and the factory’s design-for-assembly limits.
- Record fabricator limits for trace and space, drill sizes, annular rings, copper weights, solder mask, silkscreen, slots, edge clearances, and controlled impedance.
- Define test points, programming access, inspection requirements, and the manufacturing data package that must be produced.
Give the AI this contract in a form it can quote back. Require it to list assumptions, identify unknowns, and name requirements it did not touch. If a requirement is missing, the correct response is a question or a flagged uncertainty—not a guessed value.
Which constraints must be encoded before layout?
Put the limits into the ECAD rule system before AI proposes placement or routing. Rules that exist only in prose or in a chat window are easy to overlook and impossible for automated checking to enforce.
Geometry and connectivity
Configure minimum clearances, trace widths, neck-down limits, via sizes, drill and annular-ring limits, copper-to-edge spacing, and board-outline rules. Set net-specific and layer-specific exceptions explicitly. Include constraints for unrouted nets, pad connectivity, shorts, and forbidden copper in keep-out regions.
High-speed and power nets
Define differential-pair gap and tolerance, maximum uncoupled length, length-matching groups, impedance profiles, return-path expectations, and layer-transition policies. For power, encode current-appropriate widths, plane connections, via arrays, and spacing from sensitive circuitry. A rule checker can verify the values you enter; it cannot determine whether those values are adequate for an unmodeled switching transient or thermal condition.
Manufacturing and assembly
Add design-for-assembly rules for solder-mask expansion, pad geometry, component-to-component spacing, courtyard overlaps, polarity markings, fiducials, paste apertures, and access for inspection or rework. Include the board, via, and edge clearances required by the chosen fabricator. If the assembler has a preferred land pattern or a prohibited package, represent that as a library or rule constraint instead of relying on a note.

Altium’s workflow guidance separates minimum clearances; trace-width, length, and routing limits; layer- and net-specific rules; differential-pair and high-speed rules; DFA rules; and board, via, and edge clearances. The categories are useful regardless of which ECAD platform you use: they force the team to translate the design contract into machine-checkable conditions.
How can you use AI inside an ECAD project without losing control?
Use a small, reviewable loop for every AI task. The following sequence keeps the model’s authority narrower than the engineer’s.
- Prepare authoritative inputs. Provide the current project files, approved libraries, stack-up, rule configuration, design contract, and any manufacturer data needed for the task. Mark obsolete files so the model cannot silently use them.
- State one bounded objective. Ask for a specific proposal, script, report, or edit. Include what must remain unchanged, the files it may modify, and the acceptance criteria.
- Require an assumption and uncertainty report. The response should identify missing data, confidence, untouched requirements, and any decision that needs an engineer’s judgment.
- Generate a reviewable artifact. Prefer a patch, script, rule diff, or separate proposal over a complete file replacement. Keep the work in version control and label the change with its purpose.
- Check library data. Verify symbols, footprints, pin numbers, pad names, 3D orientation, polarity, and alternate parts against the manufacturer’s datasheet and the project library. Never accept an AI-generated footprint or pin mapping solely because it passes a visual inspection.
- Run the project checks. Re-run ERC and DRC after every material change, not only at the end. Save the resulting reports with the change record.
- Review the diff and the board. Inspect schematic-to-PCB synchronization, affected nets, placement, routing, planes, silkscreen, and mechanical clearances. Use 3D or mechanical evidence where enclosure fit matters.
- Merge only after approval. A person with design authority decides whether the change satisfies the contract and whether any exception is acceptable.
Ask the AI to explain why it made each nontrivial change. An explanation is not proof, but it makes an incorrect assumption visible sooner and gives the reviewer a targeted set of questions.
What is the difference between online DRC, batch DRC, and ERC?
Online DRC provides immediate feedback while you edit; batch DRC evaluates the completed board and produces a release-oriented report; ERC checks electrical rules in the schematic. Use all three because they expose different classes of mistakes.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| Check | When to run it | What it can verify | What still needs engineering judgment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online DRC | Continuously during placement and routing | Configured clearances, widths, shorts, and other immediate board-rule violations | Whether the rules are complete, whether a violation is intentionally safe, and whether electrical performance is adequate |
| Batch DRC | After a coherent design milestone and before final artwork or manufacturing files | Full-board geometry, connectivity, unrouted items, pad connections, and reportable exceptions under the enabled rules | Whether every waiver is justified and whether unencoded risks such as thermal or environmental stress are controlled |
| ERC | After schematic edits and before board release | Electrical connectivity and schematic rule conditions configured in the project | Whether the schematic expresses the intended architecture, power sequencing, protection, and component suitability |
Altium describes online DRC as real-time checking and batch DRC as a full-board process that can generate reports. Its documentation states that design-rule checking should be used on every finished board and recommends a batch check before final artwork. Treat that as a process requirement, not as an optional cleanup step.
In KiCad, the Design Rules Checker verifies that the PCB meets the requirements established in Board Setup and checks board requirements and pad connectivity. KiCad’s documentation also warns that some violations cannot be prevented automatically during routing, so run DRC before creating manufacturing files even if the interactive editor appeared clean.

How should you handle a violation or waiver?
Classify each item as a real defect, an intentional exception, or a rule-configuration problem. For an intentional exception, record the exact object or net, the requirement being waived, the technical rationale, the risk owner, and the approving engineer. Do not hide a violation by weakening a global rule when a local, documented exception is the correct solution.
What must an engineer review that automation cannot decide?
A passing ERC/DRC report demonstrates compliance with enabled checks; it does not establish that the board will work in its real environment. The human review should follow the design contract from system intent through manufacturing evidence.
Schematic intent and power integrity
Trace each power rail from source to load. Confirm regulator headroom, current and transient capacity, sequencing, protection, decoupling placement, and return paths. Check that every no-connect, pull-up, termination, and protection device is intentional. Verify that the selected ratings cover tolerance, startup, fault, and environmental conditions rather than only nominal operation.
Signal integrity and return paths
Review impedance assumptions, reference-plane continuity, differential-pair geometry, length matching, via transitions, crosstalk exposure, and connector launches. Confirm that high-speed routes do not cross plane splits or lose their return path. Use simulation or field-solver evidence when the interface budget requires it; a geometric DRC rule cannot substitute for that analysis.
Thermal behavior
Check power dissipation, copper spreading, thermal vias, heat-sink or enclosure interfaces, and temperature rise at worst-case load. Confirm that adjacent parts, connectors, and polymer components remain within their ratings. A visually generous copper area can still be thermally ineffective if the layer stack, via pattern, or mechanical interface is wrong.
Safety and isolation
Inspect creepage and clearance by voltage domain, pollution level, coating assumptions, slots, cutouts, and accessible surfaces. Verify isolation barriers, fusing, protective earth, discharge paths, and touch-safe spacing. If a rule exception affects a safety boundary, require explicit approval from the responsible safety or compliance engineer.

Components and lifecycle
Confirm manufacturer part numbers, package variants, pin-1 orientation, ratings, derating, lifecycle status, and approved alternates. Check that substitutions preserve electrical, mechanical, thermal, and regulatory behavior. AI can collect candidate data, but an engineer must decide whether a substitute is genuinely equivalent.
Mechanical fit, assembly, and test
Compare the board against the enclosure and adjacent assemblies. Inspect mounting hardware, connector engagement, cable bend space, component height, edge exposure, and service access. Verify pick-and-place orientation, polarity marks, solder-joint access, panelization assumptions, test-point reach, programming headers, and rework clearance.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What can automated checking catch, and what can it miss?
Automation is strongest where a requirement can be expressed precisely in geometry or connectivity. It is weakest where the question is whether the requirement itself is correct or whether a physical exception is safe.
| Usually detectable when configured | Usually outside a rule checker’s authority |
|---|---|
| Shorts, minimum clearances, trace and neck-down widths, unrouted nets, pad connectivity, via and edge spacing, courtyard or solder-mask violations, and defined differential-pair constraints | Whether the architecture meets the product requirement, whether a component is suitable for the environment, whether a thermal path is adequate, whether power integrity is acceptable, or whether an isolation strategy satisfies the applicable safety standard |
| Layer-specific and net-specific constraints, board-outline violations, and manufacturing limits represented in the rule set | Whether an exception is safe, whether a datasheet interpretation is correct, whether an alternate part changes behavior, or whether the enclosure and assembly process introduce a new risk |
A clean report can therefore be misleading if the wrong stack-up, incomplete net classes, obsolete library, or permissive rule set was used. The reviewer must confirm the active rule configuration and compare it with the design contract before treating a pass as meaningful.
Which AI-specific controls prevent silent design errors?
- Limit authority: give the agent only the files and operations required for the task, and make the source of truth explicit.
- Demand traceability: require assumptions, confidence, affected objects, untouched requirements, and a rationale for each material edit.
- Protect libraries: lock approved symbols and footprints where possible; compare any proposed change with manufacturer drawings and datasheets.
- Review diffs: reject opaque project replacement. A reviewer should see exactly which nets, rules, footprints, or coordinates changed.
- Repeat checks: run ERC and DRC after every material edit and retain the report associated with that revision.
- Control waivers: every waiver needs an owner, rationale, scope, expiry or review condition, and approval.
- Keep a human gate: only a person with design authority can approve manufacturing release.
One documented KiCad workflow illustrates the pattern: an AI agent edits project files, runs ERC and DRC until they pass, records what it decided and why, and still requires a human to sign off. The important control is not the particular agent; it is the separation between automated iteration and accountable approval.
How should you compare AI-assisted PCB workflows or tools?
Compare the controls around the AI, not just how impressive its generated layout looks. A useful evaluation asks whether the workflow can preserve engineering evidence from request through release.
Best Value
| Evaluation area | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Rule coverage and configurability | Can the workflow enforce the project’s clearance, width, length, impedance, DFA, safety, and manufacturer rules, including local exceptions? |
| ECAD integration | Does it work with the team’s schematic and PCB tools without breaking synchronization, libraries, stack-up data, or version history? |
| Library and manufacturer controls | Can it distinguish approved data from guesses and expose the datasheet or library record behind a symbol, footprint, or part recommendation? |
| Simulation and analysis | Can the process hand off to power-integrity, signal-integrity, thermal, or mechanical analysis where geometry checks are insufficient? |
| Reports and auditability | Are prompts or task descriptions, diffs, assumptions, ERC/DRC results, waivers, and approvals retained with the revision? |
| Manufacturing-output checks | Does it verify that fabrication, assembly, drill, pick-and-place, and drawing outputs correspond to the approved source revision? |
| Human approval gate | Can a named engineer review, reject, annotate, and approve the release rather than merely accepting an AI status message? |
What evidence should accompany an AI-assisted PCB release?
Release the board with enough evidence that another qualified engineer can reconstruct what was checked and why the design was approved.
- Archive the source schematic, PCB files, approved libraries, stack-up, rule configuration, and design-contract revision.
- Store ERC and batch DRC reports from the release candidate, including the complete list of violations and waivers.
- Include 3D or mechanical-fit evidence for enclosure interfaces, connector positions, keep-outs, and component heights.
- Attach simulation or analysis outputs used for signal integrity, power integrity, thermal behavior, impedance, or safety decisions.
- Verify fabrication and assembly outputs—Gerbers or equivalent, drill files, pick-and-place data, drawings, stack-up notes, and test documentation—against the approved source revision.
- Preserve the change history, AI-generated proposals or scripts where applicable, reviewer comments, waiver rationales, and the identity of the approving engineer.
The final approval should state which revision was reviewed, which checks were run, which exceptions remain, and who accepted the residual risk. That record turns AI assistance into a traceable engineering process instead of an unverifiable shortcut.

What is the practical release decision?
Release an AI-assisted board only when the design contract is complete, constraints are encoded, ERC/DRC reports have been inspected, exceptions are owned, and a qualified engineer has signed the evidence package. If any of those conditions is missing, keep the board in development, narrow the AI task, or correct the rule and library inputs before continuing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can AI choose PCB components for me?
It can create a candidate list or identify parts that appear to meet stated ratings, but selection still requires checking lifecycle status, package variant, derating, availability, approved-vendor policy, and substitution behavior. Treat every recommendation as a sourcing and engineering review item, not as an approved bill-of-materials entry.
How do I verify an AI-generated footprint or symbol?
Compare pin names and numbers, pad dimensions, courtyard and solder-mask data, polarity, orientation, exposed-pad treatment, and 3D placement with the manufacturer’s package drawing and the project library. Then test the symbol-to-footprint mapping on the actual schematic and run ERC/DRC; a footprint that looks correct can still swap pins or omit a required pad.
Should I rerun DRC after every small edit?
Rerun the relevant interactive checks continuously and run a complete ERC/DRC cycle after every material change, such as a component, net, rule, layer, footprint, or routing edit. Grouping trivial text-only changes is reasonable, but never defer a full check after geometry or connectivity has changed.
