Use the Raspberry Pi as a networked music source, not as a speaker amplifier. Install a player system such as Volumio or moOde on a microSD card or USB boot drive, send audio through a USB DAC or a GPIO-mounted I2S DAC HAT, and run stereo RCA cables from that DAC to an AUX, CD, or TAPE input on the old amplifier. The amplifier continues to power the speakers, while your phone or a web browser controls playback.

A USB DAC is the simplest route because it works externally and avoids fitting a board to the Pi. An I2S HAT is neater and can provide RCA line output directly from the Pi’s 40-pin header. Your music can live on USB/NVMe storage attached to the Pi or on a network-attached storage (NAS) share.

What equipment do you need to turn a Raspberry Pi into a stereo music player?

The basic system has five parts: a Raspberry Pi with network access, a suitable power supply, boot media, a digital-to-analogue converter (DAC), and an RCA cable to the amplifier. The Pi handles the operating system, network connection, library and playback controls; the DAC creates the analogue line-level signal that an older hi-fi amplifier expects.

Part What it does What to look for
Raspberry Pi Runs the music-player software and connects to your network A model supported by your chosen player; moOde’s 2024 setup guide specifies a 64-bit Raspberry Pi
Power supply Provides stable power for the Pi and attached USB devices A supply suitable for your exact Pi model, with enough capacity for the DAC and storage
Boot media Stores Volumio or moOde At least a 16GB microSD card for moOde; Volumio can be flashed to SD or USB media
USB DAC with RCA outputs Converts digital audio to analogue line level Plug-and-play external conversion and red/white RCA sockets
Raspberry Pi DAC+ or DAC Pro HAT Provides analogue output through the Pi’s 40-pin header An I2S board with RCA line output for an integrated installation
Stereo RCA cable Carries the left and right analogue channels to the amplifier Two RCA plugs at each end; normally red for right and white or black for left
Music storage Holds your files Optional USB/NVMe/SATA storage or a NAS share; the Pi can also index files on supported boot media

Raspberry Pi’s audio documentation states that all Raspberry Pi models support audio over USB. That makes a USB DAC a practical way to reuse an existing Pi even when you do not want to install a board on its header.

Should you use a USB DAC or an I2S DAC HAT?

Choose a USB DAC for the least complicated installation; choose an I2S DAC HAT when you want a compact board-mounted build. Both can provide the analogue RCA signal your conventional amplifier needs, but they differ in installation and configuration.

USB DAC: the easiest add-on

A USB DAC is an independent box or dongle. Connect it to a Pi USB port, connect its power if it has a separate supply, and select it as the output device in the player software. Because the conversion happens outside the Pi, you can replace the DAC without changing the Pi’s case or GPIO hardware. It is also a good choice when you may move the DAC between computers or audio systems.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

I2S DAC HAT: an integrated installation

An I2S HAT sits on the Pi’s 40-pin GPIO header. Raspberry Pi documents the DAC+ and DAC Pro HATs as boards with RCA line output for existing hi-fi equipment. The HAT needs to be mechanically aligned with the header and selected through the player’s audio-device or overlay setting. This option keeps the signal hardware close to the Pi and can make a tidy single-box source.

Analogue RCA versus digital output

An RCA line output connects directly to an amplifier’s analogue line input. A digital output, by contrast, sends data that must be converted by a downstream DAC or by an amplifier with a compatible digital input. If your old stereo only has conventional red/white inputs, use a DAC with RCA line output rather than assuming a digital connector will work by itself.

How should you prepare the Raspberry Pi and network?

Place the Pi where it can receive a reliable wired or wireless network connection and where its power supply can remain connected. Network access is needed for browser or app control and for a NAS library; local files on attached storage can be indexed by the player without adding a separate server.

  • Use a power adapter intended for your Pi model. An underpowered Pi can reboot or disconnect an attached DAC or drive.
  • Keep the Pi, DAC and amplifier near enough for the RCA cable to reach without tension.
  • Decide whether your library will be on USB/NVMe storage attached to the Pi, on supported boot media, or on a NAS share.
  • Have a phone, tablet or computer on the same network for the first-time setup.

If you are using moOde, plan on a 64-bit Raspberry Pi and a boot card of at least 16GB, as specified in its 2024 setup guide. Volumio supports flashing to an SD card or USB media.

How do you install Volumio on a Raspberry Pi?

Volumio’s official setup is: download the image, flash it to boot media with Raspberry Pi Imager, start the Pi, and open its local web interface or app. Complete the imaging step before connecting the card or drive to the Pi.

  1. Download the current Volumio image for Raspberry Pi from Volumio’s official getting-started page.
  2. Open Raspberry Pi Imager, choose the downloaded Volumio image as the operating system, select the microSD card or USB drive, and write the image. The imaging process erases the selected media.
  3. Insert the card or connect the prepared USB drive to the Pi. Connect the network and power, then allow the player to boot.
  4. From a phone or computer on the same network, open http://volumio.local. If name discovery does not work, use the Pi’s address shown by your router, or use the Volumio app.
  5. Follow the initial setup prompts, including the network and playback preferences, before selecting an output device.

Volumio’s free Standard tier lists support for USB 2.0 DACs and Raspberry Pi DAC hardware. The exact menus can change between releases, so use the labels shown by the installed version rather than an older screenshot.

How do you install moOde on a Raspberry Pi?

moOde uses Raspberry Pi Imager to write its image and then provides a browser-based configuration interface. Its documented access names are http://moode, moode.local, or the Pi’s IP address.

  1. Download the current moOde image and read the project’s setup requirements. The 2024 guide specifies a 64-bit Raspberry Pi and at least 16GB of boot media.
  2. Use Raspberry Pi Imager to select the moOde image and write it to a microSD card or supported USB boot device. The selected media will be overwritten.
  3. Insert the prepared media, connect the Pi to your network, and apply power. Give the first boot time to finish its initialization.
  4. Open http://moode or moode.local in a browser. If those names are not resolved on your network, enter the IP address assigned by your router.
  5. Set the login credentials requested by the setup guide, then open the audio and library configuration menus.

moOde exposes detailed controls for local storage, USB devices, NVMe/SATA sources and NAS shares. That makes it useful when your priority is explicit library configuration rather than a minimal first-run wizard.

How do you select the DAC in Volumio or moOde?

Connect the DAC before choosing it in the player software. A USB DAC should be powered and attached before boot when possible; an I2S HAT must be physically installed on the 40-pin header.

Volumio output selection

  1. Open the Volumio web interface or app.
  2. Go to Settings → Playback Options → Output Device.
  3. Select the detected USB DAC, or select the matching Raspberry Pi DAC HAT device.
  4. Save the setting and play a short track while the amplifier is set to a low volume.

If the USB device is missing, check its power and cable, restart the Pi, and return to the same output menu. Volumio may list a device by its chipset or manufacturer name rather than by the word “DAC.”

moOde output selection

  1. Open the moOde interface and choose Menu → Configure → Audio.
  2. For a USB DAC, select the detected USB audio device.
  3. For an I2S HAT, choose the matching board or overlay listed by moOde.
  4. Apply the change, allow the player to restart its audio service if requested, and test playback.

An incorrect I2S selection can produce silence even though the board is physically installed. Recheck the exact HAT model and the matching option in moOde’s audio menu.

How do you connect the Raspberry Pi player to an old stereo?

Run a stereo RCA cable from the DAC’s left and right line outputs to an available line input on the amplifier. Use AUX, CD or TAPE; these inputs are designed for a fixed line-level source such as the output from a DAC.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Turn the amplifier off or turn its volume fully down.
  2. Plug the DAC’s red RCA socket into the amplifier’s red or right-channel input.
  3. Plug the DAC’s white or black RCA socket into the amplifier’s white or left-channel input.
  4. Select the same input name on the amplifier, such as AUX, CD or TAPE.
  5. Start playback and raise the volume gradually.

Do not connect the DAC’s RCA output to speaker terminals. Speaker terminals carry the amplifier’s powered output and can damage a line-level source. The Pi and DAC supply a signal; the old amplifier remains responsible for driving the speakers.

Where should the music library live?

You can keep music locally on a USB, NVMe or SATA drive attached to the Pi, on supported boot media, or on a NAS share. Local storage is the simplest arrangement because it does not require another always-on computer. A NAS is preferable when several players or household devices need access to one central collection.

Using USB, NVMe or SATA storage

  1. Attach the prepared drive to the Pi and allow the player to detect it.
  2. In moOde, open Configure → Library and add the storage source.
  3. Run the library update or scan so albums and tracks appear in the browser.
  4. In Volumio, open the library or source-management area and follow the prompts for the attached drive.

Use a drive with its own power supply if the Pi cannot provide stable power for it. Keep the music directory organized before scanning; changing folder names later may require another library update.

Using a NAS share

  1. Confirm that the Pi and NAS are on the same network and that the share is accessible from another device.
  2. In the player’s library configuration, choose the network-share option and enter the NAS address, share name and credentials if required.
  3. Save the source and run a library update.
  4. Browse the resulting collection from the player interface.

moOde documents NAS source setup under its library configuration, while HiFiBerry’s Volumio guide describes browsing a NAS collection in Volumio. Network permissions or an incorrect share path are the usual reasons a NAS source appears empty.

How do you control playback?

Once an output device and library are configured, control playback from the player’s web interface on a phone, tablet or computer. Volumio also provides app access. The Pi can remain beside the stereo while the controlling device stays with you.

  • Use the library view to select an album, artist, playlist or individual track.
  • Use the queue to arrange several tracks before pressing play.
  • Choose the amplifier’s corresponding input; changing the browser page does not switch the amplifier itself.
  • Keep the amplifier’s volume control available because the RCA connection is a line-level feed into the stereo.

What is the difference between Volumio and moOde?

Both systems turn a Raspberry Pi into a browser-controlled music player. Volumio emphasizes guided setup and app access, while moOde provides extensive documented controls for audio devices and local, USB and NAS libraries.

Consideration Volumio moOde
Initial installation Flash the image with Raspberry Pi Imager, boot, then use http://volumio.local or the app Flash with Raspberry Pi Imager, boot, configure the required login, then use http://moode, moode.local or the Pi’s IP
USB DAC setup Settings → Playback Options → Output Device Menu → Configure → Audio, then select the USB device
I2S HAT setup Select the matching Raspberry Pi DAC device when available Select the matching device or overlay for the installed board
Library sources Local sources and NAS browsing are supported Documentation covers USB, NVMe/SATA, boot-media and NAS sources
Best fit Someone who wants a guided path and app control Someone who wants granular audio and library configuration

Neither choice removes the need for a DAC and amplifier connection. Select the system whose interface and library workflow suit your household; the electrical connection to the old stereo remains the same.

What audio quality and resolution can the hardware support?

Raspberry Pi’s current audio HAT documentation lists up to 192 kHz support for the DAC Pro, DAC+ and DigiAmp+ boards. That is a capability of those HATs, not a promise that every recording, USB DAC or amplifier path will operate at that rate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Pi’s USB-audio support is broad: Raspberry Pi documentation says all models support audio over USB. A USB DAC still determines the supported sample rates, formats and analogue circuitry, so check its specifications when matching it to a high-resolution library. The old amplifier receives an analogue signal after conversion and does not need a digital input.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

How do you troubleshoot silence or an undetected DAC?

Work from the source toward the speakers, changing one thing at a time. Most failures are an incorrect player output, a missing USB connection, the wrong amplifier input or a cable connected to the wrong socket.

The DAC does not appear in the player

  • Confirm the DAC has power and that its USB cable carries data, not only charging power.
  • Move the cable to another Pi USB port and reboot with the DAC connected.
  • Open the output-device menu again after reboot; the device may be listed under a chipset name.
  • For an HAT, shut down the Pi, reseat the board on the 40-pin header, and select its exact model or overlay.

The DAC is selected but there is no sound

  • Verify that the RCA plugs are fully inserted and that red is connected to the amplifier’s right input.
  • Check that the amplifier is set to AUX, CD or TAPE—the same pair of sockets used by the cable.
  • Lower the amplifier volume before changing connections, then raise it slowly after starting a known track.
  • Confirm that the player is not paused and that the queue contains a playable file.

Only one channel works

  • Swap the left and right RCA plugs at the amplifier end. If the silent side changes, inspect the amplifier input or cable.
  • If the silent side stays the same, test another RCA cable or another track and check the DAC’s socket.

The library is empty

  • Run the library update after adding local storage.
  • For a NAS, recheck the share path, permissions and network address.
  • Confirm that the drive is mounted and has stable power, especially when it is bus-powered from the Pi.

What is a sensible build order for a first-time setup?

Build and test the system in stages rather than hiding every cable behind the stereo immediately.

  1. Install the player software on the boot media and verify that its web page opens.
  2. Connect the DAC and select it in the software before attaching the RCA cable to the amplifier.
  3. Play a local test track or a known library item and confirm that the player shows an active output.
  4. Connect the RCA cable to AUX, CD or TAPE, select that input, and test at low volume.
  5. Add the full USB/NVMe or NAS library and run an index update.
  6. Label the amplifier input and the DAC cable so another household member can select the correct source.

This sequence isolates software, conversion and amplifier wiring. If audio works through the DAC before the RCA connection but not afterward, investigate the cable and amplifier input rather than reflashing the Pi.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which setup should you choose?

For the shortest path from a spare Pi to an old stereo, use a USB DAC with RCA outputs, a 16GB-or-larger microSD card, Volumio or moOde, and the amplifier’s AUX input. Choose an I2S DAC HAT when a GPIO-mounted board and a compact installation matter more than plug-and-play flexibility. Use local USB/NVMe storage when you want independence from another server, or a NAS when one collection must serve several players.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I connect the DAC to the stereo’s phono input?

A phono input is intended for the very low-level signal from a turntable cartridge and applies special equalization. Use AUX, CD or TAPE instead; if those inputs are unavailable, you need an appropriate line-level input stage rather than plugging the Pi’s DAC output into phono.

Do I need a separate DAC if my amplifier has a digital input?

Not necessarily. A compatible digital connection can let the amplifier perform the conversion, but the connection and format must match the amplifier’s input. The USB-DAC-and-RCA method is the straightforward choice for amplifiers that only provide analogue line inputs.

Can the Raspberry Pi store music and run the player from the same card?

The player software uses boot media for its operating system, and moOde documents indexing supported boot-media sources. A separate USB, NVMe or SATA drive keeps the operating system and music collection independent, which can simplify replacements and library transfers.
