A humidity sensor helps you decide whether a filament enclosure is dry enough, but it cannot remove water from filament. The reliable workflow is to measure relative humidity (RH) around the spool, dry moisture-loaded filament in a temperature-controlled dryer, then move it immediately into a sealed container with regenerated desiccant. Keep checking RH because every opening lets in moist air.
Use the filament maker’s temperature and time guidance for the polymer on the spool. As a starting point, Prusa’s current table recommends below 30% RH for PLA, ABS, and ASA (ASA ideally below 10%) and below 20% for PETG, TPU, PVA, PC, and BVOH. UltiMaker describes approximately 10–30% RH as optimal for most materials. These are enclosure-air targets, not direct measurements of water inside the plastic.

A digital hygrometer measures relative humidity in the air surrounding the spool. It does not measure the water absorbed inside the polymer, and it does not dry the polymer. A drybox can therefore display a low RH value while a recently wet spool still needs active drying.
Relative humidity is temperature-dependent. A reading taken immediately after closing a box may not represent the air throughout the enclosure, especially when the spool, desiccant, and sensor started at different temperatures. Prusa’s setup guidance says a USS Drybox reading can take up to one hour to stabilize. Treat the stabilized value as the useful comparison point.

Place the sensor inside the same sealed bag or drybox as the spool. Check it before printing and again after a prolonged opening. Mount it where its air inlet is not blocked by the spool, wall, or a pile of desiccant, and keep its display visible if you need to check RH without opening the container. The sensor is a monitor for the storage environment; the polymer’s drying history still matters.
What humidity should 3D printer filament be stored at?
Use the filament manufacturer’s data sheet when it gives a different limit. The following values come from Prusa’s current USS Drybox table, with UltiMaker’s broader guidance as context.
| Material | Prusa maximum recommended RH | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| PLA | Below 30% RH | UltiMaker places most materials in an approximately 10–30% RH optimal range. |
| ABS | Below 30% RH | UltiMaker lists below 50% for especially moisture-sensitive materials, but use the spool maker’s limit. |
| ASA | Below 30% RH | Prusa identifies below 10% RH as ideal for ASA. |
| PETG | Below 20% RH | Do not substitute the PLA target for PETG. |
| TPU | Below 20% RH | Prusa identifies below 15% RH as ideal for TPU. |
| PVA | Below 20% RH | UltiMaker advises below 50% RH for particularly moisture-sensitive PVA and lists 10–30°C storage. |
| PC | Below 20% RH | Follow the particular PC formulation’s sheet if supplied. |
| BVOH | Below 20% RH | Keep the container closed as much as possible. |
| Nylon | Not listed in Prusa’s cited target table | UltiMaker classifies Nylon as especially moisture-sensitive and advises below 50% RH; its drying table calls for 50°C for 24 hours or longer. |
These are practical upper limits rather than a guarantee that a spool is dry. If RH repeatedly exceeds the target, investigate the seal and desiccant instead of assuming the sensor is wrong.

- popping or sizzling sounds as water flashes to steam in the nozzle;
- visible bubbles, smoke, or a rough, foamy extrusion;
- extra stringing, blobs, and inconsistent flow;
- weak layer adhesion or parts that break more easily than expected;
- rough or dull surfaces and other dimensional or mechanical defects.
Symptoms are not a humidity measurement. A contaminated nozzle, incorrect temperature, poor retraction settings, or a damaged spool can create similar defects. Compare the print with a known-dry spool of the same material, inspect the RH trend in the enclosure, and use the manufacturer’s drying procedure before changing several printer settings at once.
How do I dry PLA, PETG, TPU, Nylon, and other materials?
Active drying requires controlled heat and time. UltiMaker states that the best results come from a dedicated apparatus that holds a set temperature for a set period while keeping humidity low. A hygrometer can tell you that a box is humid; it cannot supply the heat or time needed to remove absorbed water.

| Material | UltiMaker drying guidance | Creality example | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| PLA | 40°C for 4–8 hours | 55°C for 8–12 hours | Settings differ substantially; use the spool maker’s instruction. |
| Tough PLA | 40°C for 4–8 hours | Not stated | Use the Tough PLA data sheet rather than a generic PLA preset if available. |
| PETG | 65°C for 4–8 hours | 60°C for 8–12 hours | Do not combine one brand’s temperature with another brand’s time without guidance. |
| TPU 95A | 70°C for 4–16 hours | 70°C for 8–12 hours | Flexible filament is moisture-sensitive; keep the spool supported and follow its label. |
| Nylon | 50°C for 24 hours or longer | Not stated | Long drying time is normal for Nylon. |
| PVA | 50°C for 10–20 hours | Not stated | Return it to sealed storage as soon as drying ends. |
| PC | 80°C for 4–8 hours | Not stated | Check the spool and dryer temperature limits before using a high-temperature cycle. |
| ABS | 80°C for 4–8 hours | Not stated | Use a controlled dryer and the material maker’s specified temperature. |
The Creality figures are an example of why generic charts can conflict: its guide gives PLA at 55°C for 8–12 hours, PETG at 60°C for 8–12 hours, and TPU at 70°C for 8–12 hours. Neither table overrides the instructions for your exact formulation, spool, or dryer. Record the temperature and duration that worked for a spool so you can repeat it without guessing.
What is the practical drying procedure?
- Confirm the material. Read the label and locate the manufacturer’s drying temperature and duration. Treat filled, flexible, and water-soluble materials as separate cases.
- Load the dryer. Use an apparatus designed to control temperature and time. Do not use a humidity sensor’s reading as a substitute for a drying cycle.
- Set the manufacturer’s values. Enter the specified temperature and duration, allowing for longer times where the data sheet says “24+ hours” or gives a range.
- Check the result. After the cycle, inspect the spool and, where practical, verify that the storage enclosure reaches its material target after sealing.
- Transfer immediately. Move the warm, dry spool into a prepared sealed bag or drybox containing regenerated desiccant. Leaving it exposed while the spool cools allows it to reabsorb moisture.

- Choose a suitable hygrometer. If you need to verify very dry storage, select a model whose specified measurement range extends below 20% RH. Slice Engineering notes that many inexpensive hygrometers stop detecting at 20% RH, so a display that simply reads “20%” may be at its lower limit rather than an exact value.
- Prepare the enclosure. Put the spool, sensor, and regenerated silica gel in a resealable bag, vacuum bag, or sealed drybox. Keep the gasket, lid, and cable or PTFE pass-through clean so they can seal.
- Close it fully. Avoid judging the reading while the lid is open. Allow the air to equilibrate; Prusa says stabilization may take up to one hour.
- Compare the reading with the target. Use below 30% RH for PLA, ABS, and ASA; below 20% for PETG, TPU, PVA, PC, and BVOH; and the exact filament maker’s value when supplied. For ASA and TPU, Prusa’s ideal figures are below 10% and below 15%, respectively.
- Decide whether to dry. If the spool shows wet-print symptoms, or if it has been exposed for a long period, place it in an active dryer even when the box has not yet risen above its target. The sensor reports air conditions, not polymer moisture.
- Close the loop. After drying, seal the spool with desiccant and watch whether RH remains stable. A rapid rise points to a leak, exhausted desiccant, or excessive opening.
Does a drybox actually dry filament?
A passive drybox does not dry already-wet filament. Prusa states that its USS Drybox “does not dry filament”; it slows further moisture absorption. The same distinction applies to a sealed container with silica gel: it preserves a dry spool but cannot replace a controlled heated cycle for water already absorbed by the polymer.
An active filament dryer combines controlled temperature and time, and some models manage humidity during the cycle. A drybox with a hygrometer and desiccant is primarily for storage and printing after drying. When comparing equipment, separate those functions instead of treating every product with a fan, heater, or humidity display as equivalent.

Prepare storage before the dryer finishes. Use a resealable or vacuum bag, or a sealed drybox, with regenerated silica gel. Keep it cool, dark, and closed. UltiMaker’s current storage guidance lists –20°C to +30°C for many materials, 15–25°C for ABS, and 10–30°C for PVA.
| Storage practice | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Regenerated silica gel | It captures moisture that enters the enclosure; replace or regenerate it when RH no longer stays within the material target. |
| Strong gasket and latch | A poor seal lets humid room air defeat the desiccant. |
| Minimal opening | Every opening exchanges the dry enclosure air with room air. |
| Cool, dark location | It keeps the spool within the storage ranges specified for the material and avoids unnecessary heat exposure. |
| Sensor left inside | It provides a trend before printing and after the box has been opened. |
If the box must feed a printer, a PTFE guide can let the spool print directly from the enclosure. The guide and its pass-through become part of the seal, so inspect them whenever RH rises unexpectedly.

How do I troubleshoot a drybox that reads too humid?
The RH stays above the material target
- Check that the lid is fully latched and the gasket is seated without dust or a trapped filament strand.
- Reduce how often and how long the box is opened.
- Replace or regenerate the silica gel according to its instructions.
- Allow a full stabilization period before judging a change; Prusa allows up to one hour.
The display never goes below 20% RH
That may be the hygrometer’s detection floor. Many inexpensive units cannot report below 20% RH, according to Slice Engineering. Use a sensor with a lower specified range when you need to distinguish 18% from 8% RH, and do not treat a capped “20%” display as proof of an exact value.
The reading is low but prints still pop or string
The sensor measures enclosure air, not moisture inside the spool. Dry the filament using the correct active cycle, then reseal it. Also rule out nozzle contamination and print-setting problems rather than relying on RH alone.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesRH rises every time the spool is used
Opening the container introduces room air. If the spool is printing through a guide, inspect the pass-through and gasket; otherwise, shorten handling time and reseal the box promptly. A persistent rise after resealing indicates exhausted desiccant or a leak.

| Comparison point | Questions to ask |
|---|---|
| Measurement range | Does the hygrometer provide a specified reading below 20% RH? |
| Drying capability | Is it an actively heated, time-controlled dryer, or only a passive box with desiccant? |
| Control | Can you set temperature and duration, and does it offer presets for your material? |
| Sealing | Does the gasket and latch remain airtight after repeated opening, and can a PTFE feed-through seal? |
| Consumables | How much silica gel fits, and can it be regenerated rather than discarded? |
| Workflow | Can the spool print directly from the enclosure without exposing it to room air? |
A sensor is worthwhile when it gives a trustworthy trend and a low enough measurement floor for your target. A dryer is worthwhile when you need to remove absorbed moisture. A sealed drybox and desiccant are worthwhile after drying, because they prevent re-absorption.
How do I maintain reliable readings over time?
- Keep the sensor in the enclosure rather than checking only room humidity.
- Wait for stabilization after closing the container and after adding a spool or fresh desiccant.
- Record RH before printing and after any prolonged opening.
- Replace or regenerate desiccant when RH no longer settles at the material target.
- Inspect seals, latches, and PTFE pass-throughs whenever the trend changes.
- Follow the filament maker’s drying and storage sheet when it conflicts with a generic chart.
The central rule is simple: measure the air, actively dry the polymer, and use sealed desiccant storage to keep it dry. Treat those as three separate jobs, and a humidity sensor becomes a useful decision tool rather than a misleading promise that a drybox has repaired wet filament.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can filament be wet even when the drybox shows low relative humidity?
Yes. The hygrometer measures the air around the spool, while absorbed water remains inside the polymer until an appropriate heated drying cycle removes it. Use print symptoms and the material maker’s drying instructions alongside the RH reading.
Why does my hygrometer stay at exactly 20% RH?
Many inexpensive hygrometers have a lower detection limit of 20% RH. A fixed 20% display may mean the air is drier than the sensor can resolve, so choose a model specified to measure below 20% when that distinction matters.
Can I print directly from a drybox?
Yes, if the enclosure has a properly sealed PTFE guide or other feed-through. Treat that pass-through as part of the gasket system and check RH after installation and during extended printing.
Is a vacuum bag better than a sealed drybox for filament?
Both can preserve a dried spool when they seal well and contain regenerated silica gel. A drybox is more convenient for repeated access or feeding a printer, while a vacuum or resealable bag can minimize air volume during long-term storage.
How often should I regenerate silica gel?
There is no universal calendar interval because capacity depends on the gel amount, enclosure leaks, room humidity, and how often you open the container. Regenerate or replace it when the enclosure no longer reaches its material-specific RH target, following the desiccant maker’s regeneration instructions.
