Roku devices normally keep themselves up to date. To check immediately, press Home on the remote and open Settings > System > Software update > Check Now. The same screen shows the installed software version, build version, and the date and time of the most recent update. If an update is found, Roku downloads and installs it, then restarts the device.
The menu wording can vary slightly by Roku model or software release. The instructions below cover Roku TVs and Roku streaming players; Roku Smart Home cameras, doorbells, plugs, bulbs, and light strips use a separate firmware process in the Roku Smart Home app.

How does Roku update its software automatically?
Roku TVs and streaming players are designed to check for available software during initial setup, whenever the device is powered on, and randomly every 24–36 hours. When an update is available, the device downloads and installs it automatically. Roku says this process is designed to occur without interrupting normal use.
Automatic updating covers the Roku operating software and, when available, app updates. Roku wireless speakers and a Roku subwoofer update alongside the Roku TV or streaming player they are connected to, rather than through a separate update menu.

Because checks occur on a schedule, a device that has been offline for a long time or has just had an app installed may not have checked again yet. A manual check is useful in those situations and does not require waiting for the next automatic cycle.
The 24–36-hour interval is a check window, not a promise that every Roku model receives a new release on the same day. Roku determines which software is offered to a particular TV or player. That is why two Roku devices in the same home can show different software or build numbers while both are up to date for their models.

What should I check before starting?
Have the Roku remote available, keep the TV or player powered on, and make sure it can reach the internet. A Roku can remember a Wi-Fi network while the network itself is temporarily offline, so being connected to a network name is not by itself proof that an update service can be reached.
If you are checking a Roku TV, use the TV’s Roku home screen rather than a separate television-brand menu. For a Roku streaming player, use the player’s own home screen. The labels can look a little different across models and software versions, but the relevant destination is the System section and its software-update screen.
How do I manually check for a Roku software update?
Use the Roku remote and follow this path:
- Press Home.
- Highlight Settings and press OK.
- Select System.
- Select Software update.
- Select Check Now.
Roku may label the final option with slightly different capitalization on some versions, but it is the manual check command in the Software update screen. The device contacts Roku’s update service and checks both system software and any eligible app updates.
Roku specifically recommends a manual check when a device has been disconnected for an extended period or when you have recently installed an app. It is also useful when support instructions tell you to verify your software or when a feature appears to require a newer release.
If new software or app updates are available, Roku downloads and installs them, then reboots when the process is complete. Leave the device connected to power and allow the restart to finish before judging whether the update worked. The temporary loss of the channel or input you were watching is expected during that restart.
What happens if the check finds nothing?
A no-update result means Roku did not offer newer system software or eligible app updates to that device at that time. It is not an indication that all Roku products have an identical version number. Record the version, build, and latest-update time shown on the screen; those values are the useful record for that particular device.
How do I see the Roku software version and build number?
Open Settings > System > Software update. The System update screen displays three pieces of information:
- Software version: the Roku software release installed on the device.
- Build version: the more specific build identifier associated with that release.
- Last update: the date and time Roku most recently updated the device.
Record all three values if you are contacting support or comparing behavior after an update. The timestamp helps distinguish an older installation from a check that occurred moments ago. If an update has just completed, wait until the device returns to the home screen, reopen the screen, and capture the values displayed after the reboot.
There is no single version number that applies to every Roku TV and streaming player. Roku’s update availability can depend on the specific device, its software branch, and what is currently offered to that model. Use the version and build shown on your own System update screen rather than assuming that another Roku device’s number is the required target.

What is the difference between software and app updates?
The Software update screen is used to check the Roku operating software. Roku also says that available app updates can be downloaded and installed as part of the same update activity. You do not need a separate app-update route for the basic check described above.
These updates are distinct from firmware updates for Roku Smart Home products. A camera, video doorbell, plug, bulb, or light strip will not display its firmware status in the streaming player’s System update screen. Use the Smart Home instructions later in this guide for those products.
What should I expect while Roku installs an update?
After Check Now finds an update, Roku handles the download and installation on the device. The process ends with a reboot. The device may briefly leave the channel or input you were watching while it restarts; that is the expected completion behavior.

Once the home screen returns, go back to Settings > System > Software update. Confirm that the software and build values have changed when an update was offered, and check that the latest-update date and time reflect the recent installation. If the values are unchanged, the device may already have been current or the check may not have completed successfully.
Roku describes automatic downloads and installations as occurring without interrupting ordinary use. A manual installation still requires patience while the device reboots. Do not evaluate the result from the screen shown before the restart; check the System update page again after the home screen is available.
What should I do if a Roku update fails?
Roku’s troubleshooting guidance treats connectivity as the first place to look. Work through the checks below in order, running the manual update check again after each meaningful change.
1. Verify the selected network and internet access
Open the Roku network settings and confirm that the device is connected to the intended Wi-Fi network. Test that the same internet connection works on another device. A Roku can appear connected to Wi-Fi while the network itself has lost internet access, so both the network name and internet reachability matter.

Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →2. Improve a weak Wi-Fi connection
If other devices can reach the internet but Roku still cannot update, weak wireless signal is a possible cause. Move the player closer to the router, reduce large obstructions between them, and avoid placing the player directly behind the television where the TV and cabinet can interfere with the signal.
These placement changes are diagnostic as well as practical. If the update succeeds after moving the player, the original location or signal strength was likely contributing to the failure. You can then decide whether to keep the new placement or improve the home network in another way.
3. Restart the Roku and router
Restart the Roku device and your network router. After both have come back online, return to Settings > System > Software update > Check Now and run the check again. A restart can clear a temporary connection or service-state problem without changing your installed channels or settings.
4. Try Ethernet when the model supports it
Some Roku players and TVs include an Ethernet port. If yours does, connect it directly to the router and repeat the manual check. A wired connection can be more reliable than weak or congested Wi-Fi, but Ethernet is not available on every Roku model; do not assume that a USB-to-Ethernet adapter or any particular cable will work with your device.

Check the ports and specifications of the exact Roku model before purchasing equipment. Ethernet is a troubleshooting option for compatible hardware, not a universal Roku requirement. If the device has no Ethernet port, continue with Wi-Fi or test another internet source instead.
5. Test another internet source
If the home network remains suspect, try connecting the Roku to another available internet source, such as a mobile hotspot. If the update succeeds there, the original router, Wi-Fi signal, or internet service is the likely source of the failure. If the same update fails on a different connection, the problem is less likely to be limited to your home network.
Switching connections is most useful as a short diagnostic test. It helps separate a home-network problem from an issue affecting the Roku or the update process itself; it does not establish that a particular connection should be used permanently.
6. Contact Roku Support if the problem persists
Note the exact message or error code, the software version and build shown under Software update, and the network method you tested. Roku documents separate instructions for update error codes, including codes 001 through 005. Providing those details to Roku Support avoids repeating basic connection checks and helps identify model-specific causes.
Is Wi-Fi or Ethernet better for updating a Roku?
Both can update a Roku when the connection is working. The practical choice depends on whether your model has an Ethernet port and whether the Wi-Fi signal is stable where the device is installed.
| Connection | When it makes sense | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | The normal setup for Roku players and TVs without an Ethernet port, or when the signal is strong. | Correct network selected, working internet access, short distance to the router, and few obstructions. |
| Ethernet | A Roku model with a built-in Ethernet port has unreliable Wi-Fi or repeatedly fails updates. | That the specific Roku model supports wired networking and that the cable reaches the router. |
| Alternate source | You need to determine whether the home network is causing the failure. | Whether the Roku can complete the check on another internet connection, such as a mobile hotspot. |
Ethernet is a troubleshooting option, not a universal Roku accessory requirement. Check the ports and specifications of your exact model before buying a cable or adapter.
Do Roku TVs and streaming players use the same update path?
Roku’s streaming-device instructions use Home > Settings > System > Software update > Check Now for Roku TVs and Roku streaming players. The exact appearance of the menus can differ between device types and software versions, but the System update screen is where you check the installed version, build, and latest-update timestamp.
All Roku TV models and Roku streaming players are designed to run the latest software offered for them. That does not mean their screens will show matching build numbers. Use each device’s own update page when checking compliance with a support instruction.

Wireless speakers and a Roku subwoofer associated with a Roku TV or player update with that host device. They do not use the Roku Smart Home app’s firmware menu.
How do I update a Roku Smart Home device?
Roku Smart Home products have a separate firmware-update workflow. This applies to Roku Smart Home cameras, video doorbells, plugs, bulbs, and light strips, not to Roku TVs or streaming players.
- Open the Roku Smart Home app.
- Select the Smart Home device you want to update.
- Open Settings > Device info > Firmware version.
- Tap Update if an update is offered.
If you are trying to update a TV or streaming player, return to the remote-based System update path instead. Looking in the Smart Home app will not show the operating-system version of a Roku player. Conversely, looking only in the TV menu will not update the firmware of a Smart Home camera or light.

What does “no update available” mean?
After a manual check, a no-update result means Roku did not offer newer software or eligible app updates to that device at that time. It does not mean every Roku model worldwide has the same version number; another model can display a different release or build.
Use the displayed version, build, and update timestamp as your device’s record. If you expected an update because of a feature announcement or a support instruction, verify that the instruction applies to your model and run the check again after confirming internet access.
Remember that Roku checks automatically when powered on and at random intervals of 24–36 hours. A device that has been offline may simply not have completed a recent check, which is one reason the manual command is useful.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Looking for a universal “latest version” number: Roku does not establish one release number for every TV and player. Compare the version and build on the device in question.
- Stopping at the Wi-Fi symbol: Confirm that the selected network has working internet access, not just a remembered connection.
- Buying an adapter without checking the model: Only some Roku devices support Ethernet, and a USB-to-Ethernet adapter is not universally compatible.
- Checking the wrong product category: Streaming devices use the remote-based System update menu; Smart Home products use the Smart Home app.
- Reading the old status after a reboot: Reopen Software update after the home screen returns to see the post-installation values.
How can I document the installed version for support?
Before contacting support, write down the model name or number shown in the Roku system menus, the software version, the build version, and the date and time of the latest update. Also note whether the device uses Wi-Fi or Ethernet and whether you tested another internet source. These details let support distinguish an outdated installation from a network failure and direct you to model-specific guidance.
If the device has just rebooted after an update, wait for the home screen, reopen Settings > System > Software update, and capture the values shown there rather than relying on a message seen before the restart.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFrequently asked questions
