Update the work, not merely your job title. Map which tasks AI has changed, identify the decisions and quality checks you still own, add only verifiable responsibilities and outcomes to your résumé, and use portfolio samples that make your contribution visible. Then tailor the emphasis to each target role without claiming AI expertise you do not have.
AI can help you draft and edit these materials, but you remain responsible for every skill, metric and result they state. A careful update shows employers how your role evolved while keeping the human judgment, domain knowledge and accountability behind the output clear.

What should I update first when AI changes my job?
Start with a side-by-side comparison of your current work and the version of your résumé and portfolio that recruiters see. The goal is to capture changed responsibilities and evidence before rewriting sentences.
Make a responsibility map
- List tasks that changed. Note work that is now assisted, partially automated or performed in a different sequence.
- List tasks that were added. Include prompt design, workflow configuration, data preparation, model-output review, exception handling, documentation, training or governance only when you actually do them.
- Mark what remains yours. Record the decisions, approvals, quality checks, stakeholder conversations and risk calls you still make.
- Connect each item to an output. Identify a deliverable, project, process change, customer result or internal decision that can be demonstrated or credibly discussed.
This map prevents a common error: describing the tool as if it performed the whole job. Employers need to understand what you contributed before, during and after an AI system produced an output.

Separate a tool from a capability
“Used an AI assistant” is a tool statement. A capability statement explains the work around it, such as designing a repeatable content-review workflow, evaluating outputs against a style guide, or deciding when an automated recommendation should be rejected. Name the product or model only when it is relevant to the target role and you can explain how you used it.
Gather evidence before choosing wording
Collect permissible examples, outcome records, feedback and work artifacts. Employer rules and local law determine what may be shared, so do not upload confidential material or identify a client merely to make a portfolio look more concrete. If an example cannot be shown, prepare an anonymized description or a discussion-ready explanation instead.
Indeed’s résumé update guide, updated June 15, 2026, recommends revising professional history when responsibilities change and focusing on current, relevant skills and accomplishments. Use that principle as the trigger for an update rather than waiting for a promotion or a new title.
How do I rewrite résumé experience bullets to show AI-related work?
Write each bullet around an action, your contribution and a result that you can support. Put the human responsibility in the grammatical subject and treat AI as one element of the workflow, not as the owner of the outcome.
Use an action–contribution–result pattern
- Action: Begin with a precise verb such as designed, evaluated, integrated, audited, automated, edited, interpreted, trained, documented or approved.
- Contribution: Explain what you personally changed or decided, including the process, data, controls or collaboration involved.
- Result: Add a measured outcome when records support it; otherwise describe a concrete deliverable or scope without inventing a percentage.
For example, a weak bullet says, “Used AI to create customer reports.” A stronger, supportable version is: “Designed a report-drafting workflow that combined structured customer data with AI-generated first drafts; reviewed every recommendation against account records and delivered the approved report to the client team.” Add a time saving, error rate or volume only if your records establish it.
Show the before-and-after responsibility
When automation removed a repetitive step, describe the work that replaced it. “Moved from manually tagging every support ticket to defining the taxonomy, reviewing low-confidence classifications and escalating exceptions” tells a clearer story than “Automated ticket tagging.” It shows operational judgment and ownership of quality.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep bullets specific without exposing sensitive information
You can state the type of data, workflow and decision without naming a customer or revealing proprietary content. “Validated model-assisted risk summaries against regulated records for a financial-services team” is more useful than a vague claim, while still leaving confidential details out. Confirm that your employer permits even anonymized examples before publishing them.

Résumé bullet examples
| Old emphasis | Updated, evidence-based emphasis | What the reader learns |
|---|---|---|
| Wrote weekly product descriptions. | Established an AI-assisted product-description workflow, edited outputs for brand and legal requirements, and approved final copy for the weekly catalog release. | You designed controls and retained final accountability. |
| Analyzed survey data. | Built a repeatable process for summarizing open-ended survey responses, checked classifications against a sampled data set and presented decision-ready themes to product managers. | You combined analysis, validation and communication. |
| Created marketing images with an AI tool. | Developed visual concepts, selected usable generations, corrected defects and prepared approved assets for campaign production. | You contributed creative direction and production judgment. |
| Managed a chatbot. | Defined escalation rules, reviewed unresolved conversations and updated the knowledge base from recurring failure patterns. | You owned service quality, not just a software account. |
These examples are models for structure, not claims about your experience. Replace every verb and result with what you actually did.
How should I describe AI skills without overstating my expertise?
Use the language of the target role, but include only skills you can demonstrate in an interview or work sample. Indeed advises aligning relevant résumé language with job descriptions while leaving off skills you are not comfortable claiming.
Match the level of the claim to the evidence
- Exposure: “Used an AI writing assistant to produce drafts under editorial review.”
- Working proficiency: “Built and maintained a prompt-and-review workflow for recurring support summaries.”
- Advanced ownership: “Defined evaluation criteria, monitored failure modes and led adoption of a model-assisted process across a team.”
Do not label yourself an “AI strategist,” “machine-learning engineer” or “prompt engineer” merely because a tool appears in your workflow. Those titles imply a scope of design, technical depth or leadership that may not be present.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Place skills where recruiters can verify them
Put a tool or method in the skills section only after it appears in an experience bullet or project entry with context. For example, “output evaluation,” “human-in-the-loop review,” “workflow automation” or “prompt iteration” is credible when a nearby bullet shows the task and result. A long list of model names without evidence can make your résumé look copied or inflated.
Use target-job terms carefully
Read several descriptions for the role you want and note recurring terms. If a posting asks for “AI governance” but your work consisted of checking outputs against a team checklist, describe that checklist and review practice; do not claim governance leadership. Honest adjacent language is more defensible than an exact keyword that overstates your level.
How can I quantify the impact of AI-assisted work?
Quantify only outcomes you can trace to your contribution and explain how they were measured. AI often changes several steps at once, so avoid assigning the entire improvement to the tool.
Use reliable measures
- Volume handled, such as records reviewed per week or releases supported.
- Cycle time measured before and after a documented process change.
- Error, rework or escalation rates from a defined sample.
- Adoption, completion or satisfaction measures tied to the project.
- Cost or capacity figures that your organization actually recorded.
If no dependable metric exists, use a bounded result: “Created a review checklist adopted by the five-person content team” or “Delivered an approved migration guide used during the April release.” A specific deliverable is stronger than a guessed percentage.

- [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
Explain your measurement when it matters
In a portfolio case study, state the period, baseline and scope: “Across three monthly releases, the revised triage process reduced average first-pass review time from four hours to two, measured from ticket assignment to editor approval.” Keep the résumé shorter, but be ready to explain the same calculation in an interview.
What should I put in a portfolio if AI does part of my work?
Choose a small set of samples that demonstrates the newer responsibility and make your role visible. A reviewer should be able to see the goal, your decisions, the tools involved and the result without guessing which parts were automated.
Use a consistent case-study frame
- Goal: What problem or audience did the work address?
- Your role: Which decisions, preparation, editing, testing, approvals or stakeholder work belonged to you?
- Workflow and tools: Identify AI assistance at the level needed to understand the process, along with the human checks.
- Result: Show the shipped artifact, measurable outcome or documented decision.
- Reflection: Note a limitation, rejected output or improvement you made after review.
That last item is especially useful: it demonstrates judgment rather than implying that an AI system produced a flawless answer. If a sample is confidential, substitute a redacted artifact, a synthetic example that is clearly labeled, or a narrated walkthrough approved by your employer.
Select evidence for the target direction
Remove work that no longer represents your level or the role you seek. A portfolio does not need every project; it needs the clearest proof of the capabilities you want to be hired for. Indeed’s portfolio guide, updated May 18, 2026, recommends adding context about each sample’s goal, your role, tools and results, and keeping the presentation current and clear.
Make human contribution easy to scan
Use captions, short paragraphs and visible labels such as “My contribution” and “Review controls.” Do not bury your decisions beneath a long prompt transcript. Prompts can be included when they are genuinely relevant, but the portfolio should show what you evaluated, changed and delivered.
Should I use a website or a PDF for my portfolio?
Both formats are valid. Choose the one that makes your evidence easiest to share, read and update for the audience you are targeting.
| Consideration | Website | |
|---|---|---|
| Sharing | One link is convenient for applications and conversations; access and loading must work on common devices. | Easy to attach or upload where links are restricted; keep the file size reasonable. |
| Readability | Supports navigation, captions and embedded media when the layout remains simple. | Gives predictable pagination and appearance; check text extraction and mobile viewing. |
| Work samples | Can present interactive or video evidence, subject to permission and accessibility. | Works well for screenshots, diagrams and concise case studies. |
| Updating | Changes can be published centrally, but broken links or old pages must be monitored. | Simple to archive and send as a versioned snapshot; regenerate it when work changes. |
The guide describes both a website and a PDF as portfolio options and recommends a simple, consistent layout. Neither format is ranked as universally better, so use the one you can maintain and that your target employers can review without friction.

Should I use AI to rewrite my résumé?
Yes, as a drafting or editing aid, provided you verify every suggestion against your own record. LinkedIn’s candidate guidance allows AI help with drafting or refining application materials but says they should accurately reflect real experience, skills and impact.

- Prepare a fact sheet containing your dates, titles, responsibilities, tools, outcomes and evidence.
- Remove confidential, personal or proprietary information before putting text into a third-party system.
- Ask for structural help, such as clearer verbs, shorter bullets or a comparison with a target description.
- Review the draft line by line against the fact sheet and your work records.
- Delete invented metrics, inflated titles, unearned skills and wording that changes who made a decision.
- Read the final version aloud and have a trusted person check whether your contribution is understandable.
LinkedIn’s Resume Tips help page warns that AI feedback may contain inaccuracies. Treat suggestions as unverified edits, not as evidence about your career.
Prompts that preserve accuracy
Useful instructions specify constraints: “Rewrite these bullets for clarity, keep every fact unchanged, do not add metrics, and flag any phrase that implies expertise not stated in the source.” You can also ask the system to produce alternatives at different levels of technical detail, then choose the version you can defend.
Signs an AI edit is unsafe
- A new percentage, award, employer, degree or project appears nowhere in your records.
- “Supported” becomes “led,” or “reviewed” becomes “developed,” without a factual basis.
- A familiar tool is presented as a certification or deep technical specialization.
- The text removes the approval, safety or quality step that made the work trustworthy.
- The result sounds polished but you cannot explain the workflow in your own words.
How do I tailor the résumé and portfolio for each role?
Maintain one factually consistent master version, then change the order and emphasis for each opportunity. Tailoring should help a reader find relevant evidence, not create a different history.
Prioritize the closest evidence
- Identify the role’s primary outcomes and recurring responsibilities.
- Move the experience bullets and portfolio cases that demonstrate those outcomes higher.
- Use the posting’s accurate terminology where it matches your work.
- Trim older or unrelated detail that pushes the current contribution out of view.
- Check that dates, titles and claims remain identical across résumé, portfolio and interview notes.
For a role focused on operations, emphasize exception handling, controls and measurable cycle-time changes. For a role focused on content, emphasize editorial judgment, audience results and the review process. The underlying facts do not change; the reader’s path through them does.

What confidentiality and disclosure checks should I make?
Review your employment agreement, internal policy and applicable local requirements before sharing work or entering it into an AI service. The sources cited here do not establish a universal disclosure rule, and permission varies by employer and jurisdiction.
- Remove customer names, personal data, source code, unreleased plans and internal prompts unless you have written permission.
- Confirm whether screenshots, output samples or performance figures are classified as company information.
- Ask whether you may name the AI product, model or vendor in public materials.
- Keep a private evidence log so you can substantiate claims without publishing the underlying material.
- When disclosure is required, describe assistance accurately instead of implying the work was entirely manual.
How often should I refresh these materials after an AI-related change?
Refresh them whenever your responsibilities, workflow or evidence materially changes, rather than on a fixed annual date. A short maintenance routine keeps the next update manageable.
Best Value
Use a recurring review checklist
- Does the résumé describe what you do now, not only the job you started with?
- Can every AI-related skill be demonstrated by a bullet, project or conversation?
- Does each portfolio sample state your role, the tools, the review process and the result?
- Have outdated samples, broken links and superseded metrics been removed?
- Are all claims consistent across your résumé, portfolio, profile and application form?
- Have you checked the latest target descriptions without copying language you cannot support?
Keep dated versions of your résumé and portfolio so you can see which change introduced a claim and correct it quickly if your responsibilities or employer policy change again.
What are the most common mistakes when documenting AI-affected work?
Most problems come from making the technology more prominent than the responsibility or from treating polished wording as proof. Use this troubleshooting table before sending an application.
| Problem | Why it weakens the application | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Only the title changed. | The new scope and outcomes remain invisible. | Rewrite the experience section around changed tasks and evidence. |
| A list of model names dominates the skills section. | It does not show what you accomplished or how well you worked. | Pair each relevant tool with a responsibility and result. |
| Automation is credited with the whole outcome. | The reader cannot assess your judgment or accountability. | State the decisions, checks and approvals you owned. |
| Metrics were estimated to sound impressive. | They can be challenged and damage trust. | Use documented measures or describe a concrete deliverable. |
| Every old project remains in the portfolio. | Important new evidence is diluted. | Curate a small, current set aligned with the target role. |
| An AI editor added confident language. | It may introduce inaccurate skills, titles or impact. | Compare every sentence with your records and remove unsupported edits. |
| Confidential work is posted as proof. | You may breach policy or expose another person’s information. | Obtain permission, redact it or use an approved alternative. |
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I explain a gap created by workplace automation?
Describe the transition as a change in scope, then point to the work you took on, such as quality review, stakeholder advising or process redesign. Keep the explanation factual and avoid implying that automation eliminated your value or that you controlled decisions you did not make.
Should I name the specific AI model or application on my résumé?
Name it when the target role explicitly requires that tool or when the product choice materially affected your work. Otherwise, a capability such as output evaluation or workflow design may communicate transferable value better than a brand or model name.
How can a student or career changer show AI-related experience without an employer project?
Create a clearly labeled personal case study with a defined problem, your process, human review steps and a reproducible result. Do not present a classroom or personal experiment as paid professional work, and state the project’s setting and limits.
What should I do if my résumé and portfolio disagree about an AI project?
Choose one factual account, correct both documents and check application forms or profiles that repeat the old version. Keep a dated master record of the project’s scope and metrics so later edits do not create new inconsistencies.
