To update a Nintendo Switch or Nintendo Switch 2, connect the console to the internet, then open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update. To update one game, return to HOME, highlight its icon, press +, and choose Software Update > Via the Internet. Nintendo also downloads update data automatically while the console is online. If an update fails, check the connection and free storage first; on Switch 2, any extra card must be a compatible microSD Express card, because ordinary microSD cards do not work.
How do I check my Nintendo Switch or Switch 2 system version?
The installed system version appears on the same page used to update the console. You can check it before troubleshooting, after an update, or when a game requires a newer system version.

- Open the HOME Menu.
- Select System Settings.
- Scroll down and choose System.
- Select System Update.
The system-update screen displays the currently installed version and checks whether a newer system update is available. The menu path is the same on Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo publishes changing version numbers in individual update notices, so the procedure is more reliable than looking for a fixed version number in a general guide.
How do I update Nintendo Switch system software?
Use the built-in System Update command. The console must be connected to the internet so it can check for and download the update.

- Nintendo Switch 2 uses a new standard of expandable memory card called microSD Express (sold separately). This kind of memory card is needed for faster access speeds and to ensure games will run smoothly.
- Please note: Nintendo Switch 2 is only compatible with microSD Express cards. If the microSD cards you have used for Nintendo Switch do not support microSD Express standards, you cannot use them with Nintendo Switch 2.
Manual system-update steps
- Connect the Switch or Switch 2 to the internet.
- Open HOME Menu > System Settings > System > System Update.
- Read the version information shown on the page and follow the on-screen instructions.
- Allow the download and installation to finish before starting software.
- Return to the same page afterward if you want to verify the installed version.
Nintendo says system-update data downloads automatically while the console is connected to the internet. When the update is ready, the console shows an update prompt before software starts. If you do not see a prompt, opening the System Update page forces a manual check.
What can stop a system update?
A failed check or download usually means the console cannot maintain an internet connection or does not have enough free space for the update data. Reconnect to the internet, restart the console, and check System Settings > Data Management before trying the System Update path again. Switch 2 owners should also confirm that any expansion card is a microSD Express card rather than a regular microSD card.

Game updates are started from the individual game icon, not from the console-wide System Update page. Close the game first so the update command can run against the software installed on the console.
Update one game over the internet
- Close the game and return to the HOME Menu.
- Highlight the game icon you want to update.
- Press the + button.
- Choose Software Update.
- Select Via the Internet.
- Wait for the download and installation to finish, then launch the game.
This updates the selected title rather than checking every game at once. If the game is already current, the software-update screen reports that no newer data is available.
When do game updates download automatically?
Nintendo documents automatic software-update downloads while the console is online. Automatic downloading depends on the console’s settings and available storage, so an online console may still need a manual check if the update was not downloaded or if storage was unavailable. The manual path above is the dependable way to request an update for a particular title.
Can I update a game without internet access?
When internet service is unavailable, Nintendo documents Match Version with Local Users. The option shares update data with nearby compatible consoles that have the needed version. It is intended for local, compatible systems rather than remote downloads; a console that has no nearby matching system cannot use it to obtain data.

Nintendo’s Korean support documentation says participating systems must be on system version 4.0.0 or later. Because that requirement comes from a regional support page, check the option shown on your own console and its local support guidance before relying on it.
What changes when updating a Nintendo Switch 2?
The update commands remain the same, but storage rules are different. Nintendo states that the only SD-card type compatible with Switch 2 is microSD Express.
Which Switch 2 data can use the card?
Downloadable software, downloadable content, and update data can be stored in either system memory or a microSD Express card. Save data remains in system memory. A card therefore expands space for downloads and updates without becoming the location for save files.
| Data type | Where Nintendo says it can be stored |
|---|---|
| Downloadable software | System memory or a microSD Express card |
| Downloadable content | System memory or a microSD Express card |
| Game-update data | System memory or a microSD Express card |
| Save data | System memory |
Why does Switch 2 ask to update when I insert a card?
Nintendo says inserting a microSD Express card can prompt a Switch 2 system update. Follow the on-screen prompt and complete the system-update process before attempting to use the card for downloads or update data.

No. Nintendo’s storage guidance says a regular microSD card is not compatible with Switch 2; the console requires microSD Express. If the console does not recognize a card or continues to report insufficient space, remove the ordinary card and use a compatible microSD Express card instead.
Where do I check available space?
Open System Settings > Data Management to review free space. Check both system memory and the microSD Express card when deciding where a download or update can fit. A card can provide additional space for software and update data, but it does not move save data out of system memory.

How do Nintendo Switch 2 game-key cards work on first launch?
A Switch 2 game-key card is not necessarily the complete game installation. Nintendo says the first launch requires an internet connection so the console can download the software data.
- Insert the game-key card.
- Start the software from the HOME Menu.
- Connect to the internet when the console requests the first-use download.
- Confirm that system memory or a microSD Express card has enough free space.
- Wait for the software-data download to complete.
The game-key card must remain inserted when you play. Nintendo also states that a Nintendo Account is not required for this initial download. That requirement is separate from updating the console’s system software or updating an already installed game.
Why won’t my Switch or Switch 2 update?
Work through the checks in order. Most failures are resolved by restoring the connection, freeing storage, or repeating the correct update command for the affected software.
1. Confirm the internet connection
System updates, manual game updates, and a game-key card’s first-use download need an internet connection. Reconnect the console, then retry System Settings > System > System Update for a console update or HOME game icon > + > Software Update > Via the Internet for a game. If the connection is unavailable, use Match Version with Local Users only when a nearby compatible console can share the required data.
2. Restart and check again
Restart the console, reopen the relevant update page, and run the check again. For a game that still reports an old version, highlight its HOME icon and repeat Software Update > Via the Internet rather than relying only on the automatic download.
3. Check free storage
Open System Settings > Data Management. Insufficient space can prevent update data, downloadable content, or game-key-card software data from downloading. On Switch 2, use a microSD Express card when more space is needed; a standard microSD card will not solve the problem because it is not compatible.

4. Verify the card type on Switch 2
If software or update data is expected to use removable storage, confirm that the inserted card is microSD Express. Inserting a compatible card may itself trigger a system-update prompt, which must be completed before normal use.
5. Retry the game-specific update
Return to HOME, close the affected game, highlight its icon, press +, and choose Software Update > Via the Internet. This targets the title that failed rather than waiting for a background download to run again.
6. Handle a first-use game-key-card download separately
If the problem occurs on the first launch of a Switch 2 game-key card, leave the card inserted, connect to the internet, and make sure enough space exists in system memory or on a microSD Express card. The download cannot complete until those conditions are met.
Which Nintendo update method should I use?
The right method depends on whether you are changing the whole console or one title, and whether internet access is available.

What should I verify after an update?
Verify the console
Open System Settings > System > System Update again and confirm the installed version shown there. This distinguishes a completed system update from a download that was only started.
Verify a game
Highlight the game on HOME, press +, and open Software Update. Running the internet check again should show that no newer update is available when the selected title is current.

Verify storage
Use System Settings > Data Management to confirm that the download left enough space for the next update or downloadable content. On Switch 2, check that the removable storage listed is a microSD Express card and remember that save data remains in system memory.
How do automatic downloads, manual checks, and storage interact?
Automatic downloading is convenient, but it is not a guarantee that every update will be ready when you open a game. The console must be online, the relevant settings must permit automatic downloading, and enough storage must be available. A manual check is useful when a game still requests an update, when the console was offline, or after you have freed space.

System software and game software also have separate commands. The System Update page handles the console itself; the + menu on a game icon handles that title. Using the wrong page can make an update appear to be missing even though the other type of update is available.
What is the shortest reliable update checklist?
- Connect the console to the internet.
- Check the current version at System Settings > System > System Update.
- For a game, close it, highlight its HOME icon, press +, and choose Software Update > Via the Internet.
- Check free space at System Settings > Data Management.
- On Switch 2, use only a microSD Express card for removable storage.
- For a first-use game-key card, keep the card inserted and complete the required software-data download.
- If internet access is unavailable, try Match Version with Local Users when a nearby compatible console is available and the systems meet the documented version requirement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I share a Switch game update between two consoles without internet service?
Nintendo documents Match Version with Local Users for sharing update data between nearby compatible consoles. The receiving system still needs a compatible local system with the required version, and Nintendo’s Korean support page specifies system version 4.0.0 or later for participating systems.
Does a Switch 2 microSD Express card store my save files?
No. Nintendo places save data in system memory. The card can hold downloadable software, downloadable content, and update data, so changing cards affects access to those downloads but does not relocate the console’s save data.
Is an internet connection required every time I use a Switch 2 game-key card?
Nintendo explicitly requires internet for the first launch so the console can download the software data. Its documented requirement does not state that the same first-use download must be repeated every time you play; keep the card inserted when playing.
