How to Update HomePod Software and Fix Siri When It Isn’t Responding

HomePod updates automatically, but you can check manually in Home Settings. This guide walks through Wi‑Fi, Siri listening, voice recognition, restart, reset, HomePod mini restore, and service decisions.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

HomePod and HomePod mini normally update themselves. To check manually, update the iPhone, iPad, or Mac that runs the Home app, then open Home > More > Home Settings > Software Update and choose Update when one is offered. Keep the speaker connected to power while its white light spins.

When Siri does not answer, work from least destructive to most destructive: read the Home app alert, correct any Wi‑Fi mismatch or weak signal, verify Siri and voice-recognition settings, test touch activation, restart the HomePod, and reset or restore it only if the problem persists.

How HomePod software updates work

HomePod software is tied to the Home app and the home configuration shared by your Apple devices. Automatic installation is enabled by default, so most owners do not need to start an update themselves. A manual check is useful when a feature or fix has just been released, when an update appears to be stuck, or when you need to confirm the version installed on a particular speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before you check for an update

Use an iPhone, iPad, or Mac that is signed in to the home and running the latest available operating-system software. Updating that controlling device first removes a compatibility variable and ensures the Home app can display current HomePod options. Keep the HomePod connected to its normal power source and leave it in place while you check and install the update.

If you have several HomePods, check the affected speaker rather than assuming that every unit has completed the same update. A stereo pair normally behaves as one room accessory, but the Home app can still show an alert or status that identifies a problem with the pair or its network connection.

Check for an update manually

  1. Install the latest available software on the iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use with the Home app.
  2. Open the Home app.
  3. Select More, then Home Settings.
  4. Tap or click Software Update.
  5. Select Update if HomePod software is offered.

If no update is available, the Home app reports that HomePod is up to date and displays the installed version. The release notes currently list HomePod software 26.6 (Apple, 2026), described as a performance and stability release. That version can change as Apple publishes newer releases, so use the version shown in your Home app rather than treating an older release number as permanently current.

Keep the speaker powered during installation

Leave HomePod plugged in while the update runs. A white spinning light on the speaker indicates that installation is in progress. Do not unplug it, move it to another outlet, or attempt a reset while that light is spinning. Interrupting power can leave the speaker unavailable until it completes recovery.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The light is therefore a status signal, not an error by itself. Give the installation time to finish, then wait for the normal startup sequence before testing Siri. If the Home app still reports an alert after the light stops, follow that alert instead of repeatedly starting new update checks.

What to do when the update does not appear

  • Confirm that the iPhone, iPad, or Mac running Home is itself up to date.
  • Open the individual HomePod settings and look for an alert; the Home app can identify account, Wi‑Fi, or other configuration problems that prevent an update.
  • Allow time for automatic installation if the release has only just become available. The absence of an Update button means the Home app currently considers that speaker current.
  • Check each speaker separately if your home contains multiple units, especially if one shows a different version or a warning.

First response when Siri or HomePod says “No Response”

Treat “No Response” as a symptom rather than a diagnosis. Siri depends on the speaker’s network connection, the Home configuration, microphone-listening settings, and (for personalized requests) voice recognition. Check those in that order before erasing anything.

Read the HomePod’s alert in the Home app

  1. Open the Home app and select the affected HomePod.
  2. Open its settings and read any warning or alert shown there.
  3. Follow the specific correction suggested for the account, network, or accessory.

An alert is more useful than repeatedly saying the wake phrase because it can identify a HomePod Network Mismatch or another configuration fault directly. Note whether the alert names the Apple Account, Wi‑Fi, or another accessory setting; that wording tells you which branch of troubleshooting to follow.

Check Wi‑Fi strength and network identity

HomePod and the iPhone or iPad used to control it should be connected to the same preferred Wi‑Fi network. In the Home app, inspect the speaker’s Wi‑Fi status. Apple considers two bars or fewer a weak signal. Move the HomePod closer to the router and reduce sources of wireless interference such as dense walls, enclosed cabinets, or other equipment crowded around the speaker.

  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.

If Siri says, “I’m having trouble connecting to the internet,” handle it as a network problem. When the Home app reports a HomePod Network Mismatch, move the HomePod to the iPhone’s current Wi‑Fi network, wait for the network information to update, and try the request again. Some networks block peer-to-peer traffic; that restriction can prevent the controlling device and HomePod from communicating even when both appear to have internet access. A guest network or an enterprise network with client isolation is a common example of this type of limitation.

Do not assume that a strong internet connection on the phone proves that HomePod has the same access. The speaker may be attached to an older network name, a guest segment, or a location with a much weaker signal. Make one network change at a time, wait for the Home app to refresh, and then test a short request such as asking for the time.

Distinguish an internet failure from a local control failure

If the Home app can see the speaker but Siri cannot complete online requests, concentrate on the router, signal, and network policy. If the Home app cannot reach the speaker at all, first restore the same-network connection and then restart the device. Avoid changing several router settings at once; make one change, wait for HomePod to reconnect, and test a simple request such as asking for the time.

A local control failure can make playback controls, settings, and Siri appear broken together. A request that reaches the speaker but fails only when it needs internet access points more strongly to connectivity. This distinction helps you avoid a factory reset when the underlying issue is simply network isolation.

Make sure HomePod is listening for Siri

Enable the wake phrase

Open the HomePod’s settings in the Home app and confirm that Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri” is enabled. If listening is disabled, the speaker will not react to the wake phrase even though playback and touch controls may still work. Recheck this setting after a reset because factory setup requires you to choose the Siri options again.

Check Siri on the companion iPhone or iPad

On the iPhone or iPad associated with the home, enable Siri under the iCloud settings and make sure its device language matches the language configured for HomePod. A language mismatch can make a correctly spoken wake phrase fail or cause Siri to misunderstand requests. If more than one person uses the home, check the settings on the device belonging to the person whose requests are failing.

Repair personal voice recognition

For a personalized response, open Home Settings, select the person, and turn on Recognise My Voice. Apple says HomePod and HomePod mini can recognize multiple voices, supporting up to six users in a shared home. Guests can still make basic Siri requests without being recognized as a household member. Availability of recognition and personalized features varies by language, country, and region.

  • Seamless Apple Integration – Works effortlessly with iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for a connected experience.

If recognition is still wrong, turn Recognise My Voice off and on again. Restart the iPhone or iPad and the HomePod, then retrain Siri on the mobile device at Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri (or Siri, depending on the system version) > Talk & Type to Siri. Complete the voice prompts in a quiet room and speak at your normal distance from the device. A recognition failure is different from a speaker that never wakes: basic requests may work while personal music, calendars, or recommendations do not.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use touch activation as a diagnostic

Touch and hold the top of HomePod until the multicolored light appears, then speak. This bypasses the wake-phrase detection step. If touch activation works but saying Siri does not, focus on the listening toggle, language, and voice-training settings. If touch activation also fails, continue with the network and restart checks; the fault is not limited to wake-word recognition.

This test is useful before changing several settings at once. It tells you whether the speaker can still enter a Siri session and hear a request when the wake phrase is removed from the equation.

Restart HomePod before resetting it

A restart preserves your settings and is the correct next step after correcting Wi‑Fi or Siri configuration.

  1. In the Home app, select the HomePod.
  2. Open Settings.
  3. Choose Reset HomePod, then select Restart HomePod. For a stereo pair, choose the restart option for the pair.
  4. Wait for the speaker to come back online and test Siri with a short request.

If the restart command is unavailable, unplug HomePod, wait 15 seconds, and plug it back in. A spinning white light indicates startup. If a white light repeatedly flashes rather than completing startup, Apple’s guidance is to proceed to a reset rather than continuing to power-cycle the speaker.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

After a restart, allow the Home app to show the accessory as available before testing personalized requests. If the speaker returns but immediately reports a network mismatch, resolve that alert instead of repeating restarts.

Reset only after network and restart checks

A reset returns HomePod to factory settings. It removes the home association and requires you to set the speaker up again, so use it only when a restart and network correction have not restored operation.

Reset from the Home app

  1. Open the Home app and select the unresponsive HomePod.
  2. Open its settings and choose Reset HomePod.
  3. Follow the onscreen reset confirmation and wait for the speaker to finish erasing.
  4. Add and configure the HomePod again in the Home app, including its room, network, Siri options, and any stereo pairing.

Do not start this process while a software-update light is spinning. Let an update finish first; a reset during installation makes it harder to tell whether the original problem was software, network, or power related.

Plan for the setup work before confirming the erase. You will need to assign the room again, choose the intended Wi‑Fi relationship, enable listening, configure voice recognition, and recreate a stereo pair if you use one. A reset is a diagnostic boundary: if the speaker works afterward, the original fault was likely configuration or software; if it does not, further setting changes are unlikely to solve it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restore HomePod mini with a computer

For HomePod mini, a computer restore is an alternative when the speaker cannot be recovered through the Home app. The restore both erases the device and installs the latest available HomePod software.

  1. Disconnect the HomePod mini from its normal power arrangement and connect its USB‑C cable to a Mac or Windows PC.
  2. On a Mac, open Finder. On a Windows PC, open Apple Devices or iTunes, depending on the software installed.
  3. Select HomePod mini when it appears.
  4. Choose Restore HomePod and confirm.
  5. Keep the cable connected until the restore completes, then set up the speaker again in the Home app.

Restoration is specifically for HomePod mini. It is not a shortcut for preserving settings: the device is reset, and all setup choices must be made again. Because the restore installs the latest available software, it is also the appropriate computer-based recovery when corrupted or incomplete software is suspected.

Decide whether to keep troubleshooting or seek service

After a successful reset or HomePod mini restore, test the speaker before rebuilding a complicated setup. Confirm that it joins the intended Wi‑Fi network, responds to touch, hears the wake phrase, and completes a basic internet request. If it works immediately after setup but fails when moved to its usual room, signal strength or interference is the likely issue. If it remains unavailable immediately after a clean reset or restore, continued software changes are unlikely to help.

Situation Most sensible next action Why
Home app shows a Wi‑Fi mismatch or weak signal Move the speaker to the iPhone’s network, improve signal strength, and retry The failure is consistent with network communication rather than erased settings
Touch activation works, but the wake phrase does not Check Listen for Siri, language, and Recognise My Voice; retrain Siri The microphone and core speaker are responding, so wake-word or recognition settings are the focus
HomePod is reachable but behaves inconsistently Restart from the Home app or power-cycle for 15 seconds A restart clears a transient process without deleting the home configuration
Repeated flashing white light or no response after restart Reset in the Home app; restore HomePod mini from a computer if necessary The device needs a clean software state
No response after reset or restore Use Apple’s service options for your region Persistent failure after a clean setup points to a hardware or service condition

Service availability, repair options, warranty treatment, and cost depend on the device and country. Apple’s service process can determine whether repair, replacement, or another remedy is available; do not assume a particular outcome before the device is assessed.

Choosing between continued use, a HomePod mini, and service

If the speaker works after troubleshooting, keeping it is usually the lowest-effort option. If it repeatedly fails in one room but works near the router, solve the network environment before replacing hardware. If it fails everywhere after a reset, compare service with replacing the unit.

Decision factor Keep the current HomePod Consider HomePod mini Seek service first
Failure pattern Settings or Wi‑Fi issue that can be corrected Persistent fault where a smaller replacement meets the need Unresponsive after reset or restore
Setup effort Usually none after a restart New setup, room assignment, and optional stereo pairing Assessment required; outcome depends on region and device
Room and audio needs Retains the existing speaker’s output Compact speaker suited to smaller spaces Preserves the existing model if repair is practical
Stereo pair or Apple TV use Existing pairing may remain intact after a restart Check compatibility and rebuild the pair during setup Ask service how a repaired or replaced unit will affect the pair
Cost certainty No replacement purchase if troubleshooting succeeds New-device cost varies by seller and region Service pricing and warranty coverage vary by device and location

Before buying anything, verify the local price, seller, and availability. A replacement does not solve a network that blocks peer-to-peer traffic, and a service visit is unnecessary when the only problem is a disabled Siri listening setting. The canonical product name to look for is Apple HomePod mini; confirm that the listing is from a seller serving your region and that its price and return terms are current.

A compact troubleshooting checklist

  • Check the Home app for an alert on the affected speaker.
  • Confirm HomePod and the controlling iPhone or iPad use the same preferred Wi‑Fi network.
  • If the signal shows two bars or fewer, move the speaker closer to the router and reduce interference.
  • For an internet-connection message, resolve the HomePod Network Mismatch and check whether the network blocks peer-to-peer traffic.
  • Enable Listen for “Siri” or “Hey Siri.”
  • Enable Siri on the companion iPhone or iPad and match its language to HomePod.
  • Turn on Recognise My Voice for each household member who needs personalized requests; retrain Siri if recognition remains inaccurate.
  • Test touch activation by holding the top of HomePod until the multicolored light appears.
  • Restart from the Home app; if unavailable, unplug for 15 seconds and reconnect.
  • Reset only after those steps fail, and restore HomePod mini from Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes when a computer-based recovery is needed.
  • Contact Apple service if the speaker remains unusable after a clean reset or restore.
