If movie dialogue is buried under music or effects, look for your TV’s speech-processing mode before reaching for subtitles. Roku labels it Dialog enhancement or Speech clarity; LG calls it Clear Voice or Clear Voice Pro. These controls process the voice range or raise speech relative to the rest of the soundtrack, so conversation becomes easier to follow without making every sound equally loud. The setting is usually hidden in Sound, Audio, Accessibility, or an on-screen playback menu, and its name, intensity choices, and input support depend on the TV model, software version, app, broadcast and country.
What is the hidden TV feature that makes voices easier to hear?
It is a dialogue-enhancement mode, not simply a louder volume setting. The television or attached audio device gives speech preferential processing: Roku says its mode boosts speech separately from background content, while LG describes reducing background noise and emphasizing speech frequencies.

How do I turn on speech clarity on a Roku TV?
On a Roku TV, start playback first, then open the sound controls from the playback overlay. The exact label varies by model.
- Play the movie, show or live program in which voices are difficult to hear.
- Press the Star button on the Roku remote.
- Open Sound settings.
- Choose Dialog enhancement or Speech clarity, if listed.
- Pick an intensity and listen to a short section containing both speech and background sound.
Some Roku televisions place the control inside DTS Studio Sound or Sonic Emotion menus rather than showing it at the top level. If neither name appears, the feature may not be offered by that model, software build or current input.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What do Roku’s Off, Low and High choices do?
Roku documents three Speech clarity choices: Off, Low and High. Low makes dialogue slightly louder relative to the rest of the scene; High makes the difference noticeably stronger. Start with Low when music and effects are only slightly masking speech, then move to High if words are still being lost.
Use a scene with ordinary conversation for judging the result. A setting that sounds helpful during a quiet interview can make a heavily mixed action sequence seem less natural, so check more than one program before leaving High enabled.
How do I enable speech clarity on a Roku soundbar?
Roku documents Speech clarity for its Streambar, Streambar Pro and Smart Soundbar devices. On those products, the control is in the device’s audio menu rather than the television’s playback overlay.
- From the Roku home screen, open Settings.
- Select Audio.
- Choose Speech clarity.
- Select the desired level and return to playback.
This distinction is important when a Roku television is connected to an audio device. You may be looking in the TV menu while the relevant processing is actually controlled by the soundbar. Conversely, a television’s internal-speaker setting will not guarantee the same controls are available on every attached device.

How do I use Clear Voice on an LG TV?
On newer LG webOS versions, the documented path is Settings → All Settings → Sound → Select Mode → Clear Voice or Clear Voice Pro. Older LG models may place the option under Sound Mode.
- Press the Settings button on the LG remote.
- Open All Settings.
- Choose Sound.
- Select Select Mode on newer webOS sets, or Sound Mode on some older models.
- Turn on Clear Voice or Clear Voice Pro.
LG says Clear Voice reduces background noise and emphasizes speech frequencies. Menu wording and placement vary by model year and webOS version, so a missing option is not necessarily a fault. Check the sound mode currently selected and try the setting while the difficult program is playing.
Where should I look on a Samsung or another brand of TV?
There is no universal menu path across manufacturers. Start with Sound or Audio, then check Accessibility and Advanced sound. Search for terms such as Speech clarity, Dialogue enhancement, Clear Voice, Voice Zoom or Speech boost.
Samsung warns that sound features can vary by model, software version, app, broadcast and geography. An option shown in a television’s internal app may be absent when you switch to a set-top box, game console or disc player. Some apps and connected devices provide their own caption or audio controls as well.

What changes when dialogue enhancement is turned on?
The processor changes the relationship between speech and the rest of the soundtrack. Roku describes a separate speech boost rather than an increase to the scene’s overall loudness. LG describes reducing background noise and emphasizing the frequencies associated with voices.
That can improve intelligibility when broadcast mixing or an immersive sound mode masks dialogue. It does not rebuild words that are missing from a damaged signal, and it cannot guarantee the same result for every channel, program or input. Processing is a compromise: stronger speech emphasis can make a soundtrack sound less balanced or less cinematic.

Why does the same setting sound different from one show to another?
Programs are mixed differently. A news interview, a drama with quiet conversation and an action film with dense effects place different demands on speech processing. Broadcast or streaming delivery can also differ between programs. Judge the mode using the content you normally watch, not a single unusually quiet or loud scene.
Should I choose Low or High speech enhancement?
Choose the lightest setting that makes every word clear. On Roku, Low is intended as a slight lift and High as a noticeably stronger lift; LG presents Clear Voice and Clear Voice Pro as separate sound modes rather than the same three-step scale.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Start with the lowest available setting: it is less likely to change music and effects dramatically.
- Move up one level only if needed: test a sentence with music or effects behind it.
- Return to the previous mode for music-heavy viewing: speech processing can make a carefully mixed soundtrack sound less natural.
Do not assume a higher number is automatically better. The useful setting is the one that preserves comfortable listening while keeping ordinary conversation understandable.
Will this work with every app, channel and connected device?
No. Support is dependent on the television or audio device, its software, the source and sometimes the region. Samsung explicitly notes variation by model, software version, app, broadcast and geography; Roku and LG also document model-specific menus.
Test the feature in the exact situation that causes trouble: the same app, input or channel. If it works in the TV’s built-in streaming app but disappears on a cable box, the external device may control its own audio processing. Likewise, a soundbar can expose a speech mode that is not present in the TV’s internal-speaker menu.
What should I do if the option is missing?
Work through the likely causes in order instead of assuming the television is defective.

- Open the menu during playback. Roku places its control behind the Star button while a program is running, not necessarily in the main settings screen.
- Check alternate sound sections. Look under Sound Mode, Advanced sound, Accessibility, DTS Studio Sound or Sonic Emotion, depending on the brand.
- Identify the active output. If audio is routed to a soundbar or other external device, inspect that device’s audio menu.
- Try another source. A setting may be unavailable for one app, broadcast or connected input.
- Confirm the model and software context. Menu names and features differ by model year, webOS or Roku software version, and geography.
These checks cannot add a feature that the hardware does not support, but they distinguish a hidden control from a genuine model limitation.
What if voices are unclear only on one channel or program?
A source-specific problem may originate in the broadcast or program mix rather than the television. LG says a broadcast signal can be responsible when the difficulty appears on only one channel or program.
Compare a second channel, app or input at the same volume. If other material sounds normal, leave the TV mode unchanged and report the issue to the broadcaster or service provider when appropriate. If every source has the same problem, continue testing the TV or attached audio device.
How do I troubleshoot echo or dialogue that still sounds wrong?
If Clear Voice or another speech mode does not resolve unclear voices, switch back to the previous sound mode and compare. Persistent echo or unusual distortion is not necessarily solved by adding more speech boost.
LG recommends a hardware check when voices remain unclear or echo persists after trying Clear Voice. Inspect the TV and connected audio device, verify that cables and the selected output are correct, and test the internal speakers separately from the external system. A hardware problem requires service rather than a stronger dialogue setting.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is Audio Guidance or Audio Description the same thing?
No. These accessibility features serve different purposes. LG says Audio Guidance reads menu items and on-screen controls, while Audio Description narrates visual elements in a program.

Dialogue enhancement changes how existing speech is presented. Audio Description adds narration, and Audio Guidance speaks the interface. Their controls may be located in the TV, the streaming app or a connected external device, so turn them off in the relevant menu if they are being confused with a voice-clarity mode.
Are captions still useful after enabling speech clarity?
Yes. Captions remain a practical fallback when processing cannot make a particular mix understandable or when the source itself is flawed. Caption controls are not standardized: they may live inside the streaming app, a disc menu, a set-top box or the television.
Use the speech mode for comfortable everyday listening and enable captions when a specific program, accent, broadcast mix or noisy environment makes occasional words difficult to catch. The two functions address different problems: one changes audio processing, while the other displays text.
What is the quickest setup for clearer TV dialogue?
Start playback, locate the speech-processing control for the active device, choose the lowest useful intensity, and test it on ordinary conversation with background sound present. If the menu is absent, check the source and output device before concluding that the TV lacks the feature.
- Play the problem program.
- Open the correct sound menu for the TV or soundbar.
- Enable Dialog enhancement, Speech clarity, Clear Voice or the equivalent label.
- Compare Low or the least intensive mode with the normal setting.
- Increase processing only when words remain masked.
- Test another source and watch for echo or unnatural sound.
This approach addresses the actual cause—speech being masked by the mix—without turning up every element in the scene.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why can’t I find Speech clarity in the Roku home-screen settings?
On many Roku TVs, the control appears only while a program is playing. Press the Star button during playback and open Sound settings; Roku audio devices instead use Home → Settings → Audio.
Does Clear Voice have the same Low and High levels as Roku?
Not necessarily. Roku documents Off, Low and High for Speech clarity, while LG provides Clear Voice and Clear Voice Pro as named modes, with the exact behavior depending on the model and webOS version.
Why does dialogue processing disappear when I switch to a cable box or disc player?
Sound features can be source-dependent. The external device, app or broadcast may supply its own audio controls, and manufacturers note that availability varies by input, software and region.
What should I use if the TV setting cannot fix one badly mixed program?
Try captions from the service, disc player or set-top box handling that program. If every source has unclear voices or persistent echo, follow the manufacturer’s hardware-check guidance instead of continually increasing speech enhancement.
