To stop a VPN from charging you again, cancel the subscription in the service that billed you: Apple Subscriptions for an iPhone or iPad purchase, Google Play Subscriptions for an Android purchase, Amazon’s subscription manager for an Amazon purchase, or the VPN provider’s website for a direct purchase. Deleting the VPN app does not cancel billing. After you confirm cancellation, save the confirmation email or a screenshot showing “Off,” “Canceled,” or an expiration date. Your paid access normally continues until the end of the current term, so an active VPN account immediately after cancellation does not necessarily mean renewal is still enabled.
Where should you cancel a VPN subscription?
Cancel in the billing channel that processed the payment, not necessarily in the app you use to connect. A provider cannot usually switch off an Apple, Google Play, or Amazon subscription from its own account page, while an app store cannot cancel a subscription bought directly from the provider.

If you are unsure, check the original receipt or the transaction description on your bank or card statement. The name of Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or the VPN company normally identifies which account to open. Sign in with the same Apple Account, Google Account, Amazon account, or provider login used for the purchase; a different account can make a valid subscription appear to be missing.
How do I cancel a VPN subscription on an iPhone or iPad?
For a subscription purchased through Apple, use the Apple Account’s Subscriptions screen. The VPN app itself may not contain a cancellation control.

- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad.
- Tap your name at the top to open your Apple Account.
- Tap Subscriptions.
- Select the VPN subscription from the list.
- Tap Cancel Subscription, then complete the confirmation prompts.
How do I know Apple accepted the cancellation?
Return to the subscription details page. Apple’s guidance says that if there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, Apple already considers the subscription canceled. An end date also indicates that the current term will run out without another renewal.
What if the VPN is not listed?
Check that the device is signed in to the Apple Account that made the purchase. If the charge came directly from the VPN company, the subscription will not appear in Apple Subscriptions; use the provider’s website instead. If the purchase was made through another store, open that store’s subscription manager.

For Google Play billing, cancel from Google Play while signed in to the Google Account that owns the subscription. Uninstalling the VPN does not cancel it; Google Play states, “When you uninstall the app, your subscription won’t cancel.”
- Open the Google Play app.
- Tap your profile icon and verify that the displayed Google Account is the one used for payment.
- Open Payments & subscriptions, then tap Subscriptions. On some Play versions, Subscriptions appears directly in the menu.
- Select the VPN subscription.
- Tap Cancel subscription and complete every on-screen step, including any reason or confirmation prompt.
How can I verify the Google Play change?
Open the subscription again after canceling and look for a canceled status or an end date. Keep the confirmation message or email. The VPN may continue to show premium features until that date because cancellation stops the next renewal rather than cutting short the paid period.
What if Google Play shows no VPN subscription?
Switch through any other Google Accounts on the phone and check each account’s Payments & subscriptions page. A direct provider purchase will not be listed in Google Play. If the receipt identifies Amazon or another store, use that service’s account instead.
How do I turn off auto-renewal on a Windows or Mac computer?
When the VPN was bought directly from the provider, use a web browser rather than the desktop app. Sign in to the provider website, open Billing, Subscription, or a similarly named account area, choose the cancellation control for automatic renewal, and confirm. The exact labels vary, but the final status should say Off, Canceled, or show an expiration date.

NordVPN direct billing
- Sign in to Nord Account in a browser.
- Open Billing.
- Choose Cancel next to the automatic-renewal setting.
- Select Cancel auto-renewal and finish the confirmation screens.
- Reopen Billing and verify that the status has changed to Off. NordVPN also says a confirmation email is sent after a successful cancellation.
If you do not see a cancel control in Nord Account, check whether the original payment was handled by Apple, Google Play, or Amazon and cancel through that account instead.
ExpressVPN direct billing
- Sign in to the provider account and open My subscription.
- Locate Automatic renewal.
- Choose Cancel subscription below that section.
- Follow the prompts until the site confirms the change.
- Save the confirmation and note the displayed end date.
ExpressVPN says the service remains usable through the last day of the current billing cycle, so continued access immediately after cancellation is expected.
What if the provider account has no cancel button?
A missing control usually means the provider is not the billing party or the subscription has already been canceled. Search the account for a billing receipt, then check Apple Subscriptions, Google Play, or Amazon with the account that made the purchase. If the status already says Off or canceled, do not submit a second cancellation request; save the evidence instead.
What should I do if I cannot find the VPN subscription?
Start with the payment record and work backward to the account that received the money. This avoids repeatedly searching the wrong app or login.
- Find the original purchase email or card statement and note the merchant name, purchase date, and account address shown.
- If the merchant is Apple, sign in to the Apple Account used at checkout and open Settings > your name > Subscriptions.
- If the merchant is Google Play, open Google Play with each Google Account that could have been used, then check Payments & subscriptions > Subscriptions.
- If the merchant is Amazon, open the Amazon account connected to the receipt and use its subscription manager.
- If the merchant is the VPN provider, use a browser to open the provider’s Billing or Subscription page and look for the automatic-renewal setting.
Do not infer the billing channel from the device alone. An iPhone can run a subscription bought on a provider website, and an Android phone can run one bought through a provider or Amazon. The receipt and account that took payment are decisive.
How can I verify that VPN auto-renewal is really off?
Verification requires a billing status, not merely an app that still works. Use the confirmation screen and at least one durable record.

- Provider account: Look for Off, Canceled, or an explicit expiration date in Billing or Subscription.
- Apple: A missing Cancel button, a red expiration message, or an end date indicates that Apple considers the subscription canceled.
- Google Play: Reopen the subscription and confirm that it is marked canceled or has a stated end date.
- Email: Keep the provider, Apple, Google Play, or Amazon confirmation message. Do not rely on a transient pop-up.
- Records: Take a screenshot that includes the account identity, subscription name, and cancellation status, while avoiding unnecessary payment details.
Do not use continued VPN access as a test. Access generally lasts until the paid term ends, so an active connection after cancellation does not prove that another charge is scheduled.
When should I cancel to avoid the next VPN charge?
Cancel before the next renewal deadline, with extra time for app-store processing. ExpressVPN advises canceling an app-store subscription at least 24 hours before the end of a free trial or the next billing date to avoid a charge.
Free trials
Find the trial’s end date in the Apple, Google Play, Amazon, or provider account and cancel at least 24 hours beforehand when the store or provider recommends that buffer. A cancellation made after a trial converts can become a paid subscription, and refund eligibility is then handled separately.
Monthly and annual plans
Turning off auto-renewal normally preserves access through the current paid period. Cancel as soon as you know you will not renew rather than waiting for the final day; the cancellation takes effect for future billing while the existing term continues.
Time-zone and processing concerns
The renewal date can be displayed in a local time zone or an account time zone, and a store may process a charge before you notice the renewal email. Treat the date shown in the billing account as the controlling deadline and leave a margin rather than attempting cancellation at the last minute.
Does canceling auto-renewal end VPN access immediately?
Usually it does not. Cancellation prevents the next subscription cycle; the paid service generally remains available until the current term’s end date. Both ExpressVPN and the provider documentation cited for direct billing state that access continues through the end of the billing period.

That means two screens can appear to conflict without either being wrong: the billing page can show Canceled while the VPN app still connects. The status controls future payment, while the expiration date controls when the already-paid service ends. Keep using the service until that date if you wish, then remove the app afterward if you no longer need it.

No. Cancellation and a refund are separate actions. The provider documentation states that switching off auto-renewal does not automatically create a refund request.
Refund eligibility depends on the billing party, the transaction, the country, and the applicable policy. A direct provider purchase follows the provider’s refund route; an Apple, Google Play, or Amazon purchase follows that store’s process. Submit the refund request to the same organization that processed the payment, and include the transaction date and receipt information it asks for. Do not assume that canceling a newly renewed plan reverses the charge automatically.
What should I do if I was charged after trying to cancel?
First establish whether the cancellation completed before the renewal deadline and whether the charge came from the same billing channel. A successful cancellation should leave a status such as Off or Canceled, an expiration date, or a confirmation email.
- Open the relevant provider or store account and capture the current subscription status and end date.
- Compare the cancellation timestamp in your email or screenshot with the charge date and the renewal deadline.
- Check for a second subscription under another Apple Account, Google Account, Amazon account, or provider login; duplicate subscriptions can produce a charge that the canceled account does not show.
- Contact the organization that processed the payment and provide the receipt, account email, and cancellation evidence.
- Ask specifically about refund eligibility, because a billing dispute and a future-renewal cancellation are handled as separate matters.
If the account shows no cancellation record, repeat the correct channel’s procedure and save the final confirmation. Avoid deleting the app as a substitute; app removal has no effect on a store subscription.
Can I cancel from a different device?
Yes, the cancellation belongs to the billing account, not the physical phone or computer. You can normally use a browser on another device for a direct provider subscription, or sign in to the Apple, Google, or Amazon account that owns the purchase. The important requirements are the correct account credentials and the billing channel that processed the transaction.
After using another device, verify the change from the account’s subscription page and retain the confirmation. If the account requires two-factor authentication, complete it through the account’s normal security method rather than creating a new login.
